We’re big fans here at MFT of the GAA history podcast Over The Bar, in which hosts Michael Foley and Ciaran O’Hara rummage back through the decades to find GAA stories of interest.
Every so often Mick and Ciaran alight on stories concerning Mayo and they’ve done so this week with a fascinating show about why Mayo wear the famous green and red jersey. The lads look back at the origins of Mayo’s colours, separating tradition from fact to discover how and why the green above the red became one of Gaelic football’s most enduring identities.

No surprise. Crossmolina very disappointing and were way off the pace. Garrymore should have been more comfortable at the end. Hession excellent.

Warning signs were there for Crossmolina in the Mayo Gaels match.
I don't think Garrymore lost a kickout tonight. Should have won by more. Very impressive.
Crossmolina tended to go for the corners instead of shooting around the D.
Baffling. But Garrymore's defence was class.
Crossmolina were poor tactically. Can't understand why they didn't get bodies under the kickouts in the first half when the ball was going to the left wing every time.

Cross gave away alot of ball due to poor hand passes. Garry were the better team and deserved to win by more than they did.

@Mayo Mayo you probably have it spot on.
In the All Ireland quarter finals,Mayo were number 8 in the rankings, then 4in the semis, and number 2 for the final.
It is wide open.

I watched Aughamore V Ballintubber, Balla v Mayo Geals, Crossmoloina v Garrymore all on TV. My comment is about the standard of refereeing. I thought the referees in the Aughamore and Balla games did a very good job in letting play flow. Game Crossmoliona v Garrymore the refereeing was not great. A case of two different set of rules for each team. I thought he decided it's my way. Last evenings game was, the same foul for each team one team got the free the other team didn't. Hope we have better refereeing for the remainder of championship.

Well done Garrymore. Terrific performance, though it was in the melting pot until the end.
Enda Hession was excellent all through. I met him on Friday morning, with Jack Carney at the Corduff presentation of Sam in Dublin, and he’s a lovely lad, both of them in fact. They were there for a couple hours.
Some were saying in Corduff that the Late Late segment was pre-recorded on Wednesday. I watched it closely on Friday night, but it looked ‘live’. Editing techniques these days are very slick of course.

Some of those county players are unbelievable. The high of winning the AI , the unbelievable week that followed and all the subsequent weeks since. Their selfless times spending hours in clubs, schools hospitals etc. And then they have played 4 tough club championship matches in the last 6 weeks. Touhy and Durcan were excellent yesterday as were McGreal and Hession. Also Paul Towey excellent for Charlestown. For the county lads on club teams which were beaten, well they are surely deserving of a well earned break but no doubt many will continue to take Sam to all who want to see him. Those lads are a credit to themselves and the county

As the saying goes, defence wins championships. Castlebar and Garrymore looking rock solid at the back. Aghamore had a good run, and thought Cross would've had more, but not to be.
Would be great to know how many went to the game last night, the place was absolutely wedged.

Agree with every word of that TWJO. And another thing that struck me about Enda Hession, and indeed the team: I'm fairly small (and in my seventies), yet I felt I could take Enda on! He looks so slight and is not much taller than I am. To be able to compete at the highest level, the way he does in the modern game, is phenomenal. Even up close to Jack Carney, while quite tall, he too looks slight. Add in Ryan (well built but small really), Paul Towey, and we are not a team of giants. This was one of the reasons people felt that Kerry would murder us. They're huge.
I also met David Brady in Corduff. Now, taking him on would be a different story.

Watched all games over the weekend so far , great coverage including the Charlestown game , senior is wide open, think Garrymore are getting stronger and should have been favourites last night. All the media chat about how good Crossmolina were supposed to be caught up with them as well as the aftermath of winning SAM…although it didn’t appear to impact the Mayo lads in Garrymore. Aghamore will have regrets with all they missed but Mitchels were efficient. I think Breaffy will get over the line today and it’s up for grabs in Claremorris. Hopefully that’s another shootout for 2 pointers..

Hello all. This is my first-ever comment here. I am in my seventies and have been supporting Mayo football all my life. This means of course that I have enjoyed many highs and endured many lows.
This year's A I win was the summit of joy and relief. But equally, the dignity, thoughtfulness and humour of our brilliant players in bringing Sam to so many deserving places makes me so proud to be from Mayo. They are fantastic ambassadors. No wonder that the whole country and so many abroad are celebrating with us.
Maigheo Abu !
P.s. I would like Mayo 1966 to be my title here, for reasons I might explain sometime !

No Culmore. I wish I was good enough. But I was in secondary school with lads who won 2 All Irelands in the same year,1966. Jarlath's won the Hogan Cup and Mayo minors won their All Ireland. 7 lads that I knew were on both teams.
Galway won Sam and Rossies won u-21 AI. Great year for the west !
