Who’ll win on Sunday?

Who’ll win on Sunday?

With a short turnaround after last weekend’s semi-finals, there’s silverware on the line at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park on Sunday as the main club Championship campaigns within the county reach their conclusion.

First up on Sunday is the Intermediate final, which sees Moy Davitts take on Kilmeena at 2pm. Moy Davitts have come agonisingly close to capturing the Sweeney Cup in recent years but they still haven’t managed to get the job done. Kilmeena beat them in the final two years ago and now, having been unluckily relegated from the Senior ranks in their first season there last summer, they’re back again this year aiming to secure another victory that would see them back among the big boys once again.

These two clubs always looked destined to meet in the Intermediate final this year and that’s how it has panned out. But which of them will get over the line on Sunday? Let’s have a vote on that.

Who'll win the Intermediate final?

  • Moy Davitts (57%, 278 Votes)
  • Kilmeena (43%, 211 Votes)

Total Voters: 489

The main event in MacHale Park on Sunday is the Senior final between treble-chasing Ballina Stephenites and the 2022 champions Westport St Patricks.

Ballina have got into their stride in impressive fashion in recent weeks, having only managed to qualify for the knockout stages in the runners-up spot of their group. Wins over Ballaghaderreen and Knockmore have, however, seen them reach a fourth Moclair Cup decider in a row and they’re now hot favourites to clinch their third county title in succession.

The first of those four finals they contested was, of course, the 2022 one against Westport. That final appearance was, believe it or not, their first since way back in 2007 and so it was no great shock when Westport prevailed that day, even if the win did give Westport their first ever Moclair Cup success.

A similar result on Sunday would, however, represent a significant upset. What do you reckon: is a shock result on the cards or will the Stephenites become the first team to complete a three-in-a-row since Castlebar Mitchels did so in 2017? Let’s end with a vote on that one.

Who'll win the Senior final?

  • Ballina Stephenites (56%, 363 Votes)
  • Westport St Patrick's (44%, 283 Votes)

Total Voters: 646

I got all four matches wrong at the weekend so confidence is not great for the finals. I’ll go for Kilmeena more so because I think Moy Davitts will not live up to expectations and Kilmeena are a team to craft out a win. Ballina Stephenites had a bit left in the tank against Knockmore and are pacing themselves better for the long haul this year combined with the short turnaround for Westport in particular I’ll go for Ballina.

I expect it to go to extra time and Westport to come out on top with the deeper squad, they are improving every game while Ballina have maxed out in my view. I expect Kilmeena to just shade it against MD, they are showing more consistency, again this could go all the way to penalties....i hope the weather though doesn't destroy what should be a great afternoons football.

I too fell flat with predictions last week. Think Westport will shade it and Moy Davitts to win Intermediate.
Preparing to fall flat on my face week 2 :-)

Love it! You can’t lose. A final proper, a shield final and a plate final for the bottom two.

The blazers have excelled themselves.

I'll go for Ballina and Moy Davitts but like the others my predictions in this year's Championship wasn't great.
Hopefully two great games to begin down the curtain on this year's Championship

They'll do the latter if they choose to play the matches in venues other than the Connacht GAA centre.

You know I think I could guest manage the team for the FBD if Andy would take a few weeks off. It's a no lose situation, and all 26 get to play. People might then point to me in a pub and say, 'do you know your man? No. He managed Mayo when they got to the Plate final of the FBD, way back'

I'd call on people here of course: TSU selector and stats man, JP, Sean Bourke, OOB. And what about Willie Joe? Willie Joe would be very busy having us on podcasts with the lads in the run up, covering our every move and thought, and reporting back to awe-struck posters.

I must start to think about naming the twenty six, sorry the XXVI.

Very surprised that Crossmolina decided to pull out of under 21's. They have an excellent team and I met one of their players this evening and the lads are really disappointed about the situation. Some of the lads have trained all year and have had very little game time and now they won't even get to play a couple of games at their own age group. Players have contacted the club executive to reverse their decision but were told no. It's a very strange call by the club.

@the west is best . Don't blame them for been disappointed in fairness , winning the under 21b two years ago was what instilled confidence in a lot of these lads that went on to win the all ireland intermediate this year. Like you said a lot of lads have been training all year for very little game time , especially since june . Can't fathom why the club made the decision, they have plenty of numbers to make a panel without having to play the minors.

That is a shocking decision by the executive of crossmolina gaa club. It is really letting diwn the under 20 players in the club. It devalues the whole competition especially when the players want to play in it. It is a bizarre decidion.

Any possibility they are in a huff because their man didn't get the county job?

It’s stupid, if it’s because their senior u-21 players are wrecked then play the other lads

East Mayo says:

Ridiculous that Crossmolina pulled out of the Under 21 competition. It's telling their younger players who are not necessarily good enough to make the senior team yet that they don't care about them. Costing them the opportunity to play some bit of football when they have likely trained just as hard as the other players without a fraction of the game time.

As someone said above, if the senior players are tired then don't play them but there are surely plenty of 17 - 21 year olds in the club capable and willing to play. It makes a mockery of the competition.

The club have a fair bit of goodwill built up over 2025 between the All Ireland victory and their style of football throughout the league and championship but I fear decisions like this could have people viewing them in a different light

Working away for the finals tomorrow. Assumed that since I bought the mayo GAA pass for the year it would cover the finals. Looks like they are charging for the finals? Really is a bad touch from all involved.

Cross dropping out of the 21s is a poor decision. Can imagine what a county title would do for them lads going into next year for the sake of 6 more weeks

Clubman 51, the mayo gaa pass covers the county finals tomorrow. In my opinion, one of the great initiatives from mayo county board. Anyone who goes to a lot of matches, it's great value.

Am I right that since 51, Pat Holmes has been the most successful Manager for Mayo?
Senior :
Div 1 league
Connacht championship
U21 :
AIl Ireland title
4 in a row Connacht titles

And if Westport win tomorrow will he be the first manager to win senior county titles with different clubs?
And while I'm at it does anyone know if the dome in bekan will be available for the FBD?
Cheers

Mayo gaels winning the first final that no one wants to be in today very comfortably, gaels very impressive especially in attack, feel for ballyhaunis but they will be back and in hindsight ita probably a blessing. Looking forward to balla v mayo gaels for the fourth time next year hahaha

An exciting finish to the intermediate final but not a great standard. So many poor wides. Ok there were some great scores too but neither team were overly impressive.

The big turning point for me was Ronan Clarke’s hamstring injury. He was the best forward on the pitch but clearly wasn’t fully right.

Moy Davitts got very little change from the ref in the 1st half. Kilmeena seem to get an awful lot of calls from officials (same in their semi final).

Conor Reid definitely won the 1st half aerial battle against Carney but fizzled out completely. Carney improved but missed a sitter just after HT that a county player really should be landing. Keaveny did ok.

MD will be gutted. They are so open at the back and once Reid went out of it, they’d nothing in the middle.
