Mayo GAA have just confirmed (here) that all adult GAA fixtures due to be played this weekend within the county have been cancelled.
Mayo GAA Chairman Séamus Tuohy confirmed that the decision has been made in the interest of public safety in light of the approaching named storm. He also said that the clubs due to host this weekend’s matches had informed Mayo GAA that their pitches were unplayable.
With Storm Amy about to barrel across the country, bringing plenty of rain and strong winds in it wake, this decision is obviously a sensible one. The fact that the announcement has been made so early is clearly helpful as well.
Mayo GAA’s CCC is due to meet over the weekend to reschedule these fixtures.

Need to move the county season for the winter so the clubs can play in summer and the players can get summer holidays in the sun too and also play in murica . I suggest we rush the county season in November dec / Jan and February have the all Ireland on Patrick’s day , get it over with so the club snobs can live in peace once and for all .
Two pointer says:
October 3, 2025 at 2:25 pm
This is only a minor inconvenience.
The most important thing is that at least the clubs in America got full access to all the players they wanted to in the peak of summer. Yes the rest of the county’s club players that remained at home spent all those great weekends of weather shadow boxing in a club league that no one takes seriously anymore and then played club challenge games for about 6 weeks when the weather was perfect and they could have been playing championship games but that doesn’t matter. They had to wait for all those lads in America to finish because their championship over there has suddenly become the most prestigious competition in all of club GAA.
The Mayo county board now probably has to check in every year with McBrides GAA club before any championship can be scheduled for the season.
I mean nobody could have ever foreseen that there would be bad weather in October. That never happens does it.
Supermac says:

@Sean Burke...
Who are these 'club snobs' you are referring to? Would it be the 95% percent of right-minded people who realize club represents the vast majority of gaels and always comes first, ahead of the never-ending saga of a county team that can never get the job done? Because very often when im in croker at a big mayo game the bandwagoner mayo fan beside me wouldn't even know the way to their own clubhouse
Disappointing on the postponements as was looking forward to a good weekend of club action, but at least they made a decisive call early in the weekend so no complaints from me this time

Not sure how to address that one supermac , I’m personally not against club football and was actually on my way down home tomorrow for a junior B game so probably doing myself a disservice to put myself in your 5% category . I just don’t get the hardline you and others take like yours that you’re not a true Gael unless you put club before county , there are Mayo men who left Mayo and have a very dedicated connection to the county team and might not of ever been involved with any club , who are you to criticise such people ? I just find the whole thing ridiculous tbh especially when there is so much hypocrisy and lack of context .

There's a reality needs to be recognized that the weather patterns for Ireland are changed now and you need to playoff the championship in6thr better Summer and Autumn weather.
We're here at October 4th 5th only at semi final stage. It's a crying shame to start a championship in good weather and finish it in Wintry crap weather.
And, yes, storms and intense rain are now more frequent. That's hard facts not opinion that was available to the county board. We're planning things like we've still got 1995 weather patterns.
Gizmobobs says:
October 3, 2025 at 4:49 pm
I don't think there's much debate over which competition rules the roost. The Inter County gets the cream, with club left for the winter fare, with the yanks and GPA accommodated for the finest of the summer weather.
JP says:
October 3, 2025 at 4:58 pm
Another mini negative close to fact from me.
My bugbear the GPA. They've said zip on the nod and a wink professionalism of club players going over to USA to play club football.
Nip this in the bud once and for all and get rid of this summer transfer rubbish.
There's no merits to retaining it and it's totally at odds with the GAA ethos.
But see the wider picture. Big players doing big stuff getting their big reward and quieten down club scene this is what we do.
Jr says:
October 3, 2025 at 6:37 pm
I agree America is a big problem especially for western counties.
Perhaps a minimum 6 month transfer time may let lads think again.
God be with the days when the league started in November.
GPA have far too much power, only represent the elite.

Sure their are bandwagoners but as was said above alot of mayo people move away and are not near a certain club. Though still love their county.and aren't we all in this together anyway we will want what's best for Mayo football .

We ca start the Club championship in August if we want. We dont have to wait for players to come back from America. If they are unavailable due to travel then they are unavailable just like if it injury or they are away in Australia for a year. If they go they go there is no obligation to wait for their return
Ontheditch says:
October 4, 2025 at 12:06 pm
Free East Bank. I agree with that. Students playing summer football in USA should not hold our championship to ransom and that's not their intention. On the other hand they are entitled to enjoy their time out there and make a few bob in expenses.
I'm sure the bigger picture, sponsorship of Mayo GAA in USA is an important factor too.
Mayonaze says:
October 4, 2025 at 12:21 pm
Id agree. Start the club championship 3 weeks earlier. If…if, Mayo advance deep in the All Ireland, then push out if required, but no need to be anything more than a 2 week break between Mayo finishing up (with Sam someday!!!) and starting the club campaign.
America should have no bearing on it. If lads go, then that’s their decision but it shouldn’t hold up the domestic club championship
Perhaps postponing Sundays games was a tad pre-mature. Anyway, decision is made.

Special congress passes all 62 motions across 17 votes (one to make the playing gear rule compliant with EU law [a little too late with one pending legal case already] & 16 for the FRC rule changes) with all of the playing rule changes flying through at +90% except for the clock/hooter change which passed with 67% (60% needed to pass).
No huge shocks in the passing (personally I'd have expected & hoped the hooter one would fail, on costs & logistics grounds despite loving it in theory) but the level of support probably a touch surprising.

I love club football and was always involved but I also love watching Mayo teams of all age groups both men and women as do most club workers.
As for Clare supporting Ballina I think it's totally understandable. She obviously loves senior championship and in fairness she's unlikely with all due respect to get that with Killala. With my club out of the championship I'll always root for one of those remaining and the eventual winners when they advance to the provincials.
Quite funny really when you see stalwart GAA men heading to Anfield or Old Trafford to cheer on multi national teams but cheering on your neighbours is frowned on.
TsuDhoNim says:
October 4, 2025 at 2:38 pm
@Sean Burke: Nope. This is a special congress specifically for the FRC rule changes to come in from the 1st January.
Basically what we had this year, with a couple of tweaks:
- An opponent touching a 2 pointer is still a 2 pointer
- A jersey pull to deny a goal scoring opportunity (inside the D or 20) is now a potential black card and a penalty
- Breaching the sideline or the 45 line for a throw in is now a free from midfield
- Kickouts must now be fetched outside the 20m line (there was a niche situation where a ball could curl back inside the 20m line and be legally claimed as long as it breached the arc first)
- Black card/penalty rules now apply at club level (often a massive cause of confusion)
- Advancing a free or sideline is now a free against rather than a throw ball
A change like the timing of the calendar would most likely be made at the usual congress around February (for inclusion in the calendar for the following year).

@ On the Hop, agree 100% regarding the climate nonsense. This forum is for GAA.
Gutted that the matches were cancelled as was building my Saturday around it. I am based in Louth at the minute. The Louth Final of Naomh Martin ( The Jocks) Vs St Marys Ardee went ahead last year in near gale force conditions. It was a farcical day for football with both teams battling the conditions instead of each other. Common sense has prevailed this weekend
In terms of Club V County there is room for all. Have to say I follow the club championship much closer with the advent of this blog, Podcast and Mayo Gaa TV etc. My home club is Bonniconlon but would also follow the underdog in Senior, that being mainly Breaffy in the last couple of years.
Hope Cross do it this year but Ballina may be hard to shift off the top.

So I will always support Ballina is well and it's not like I'm betraying Killala or anything is it since we are never in the Moclair cup . People in Killala well some of them feel it's nice to support a town that's given us so many jobs that alot in Killala would be lost without .

- Livingstone likely leading the pack at the minute, but only just.
- Dolan outstanding as the young gun pushing through with a huge ceiling, so would be making my 3 to help start building that experience.
- Then a toss of a coin between any of Rory Byrne, Adam Byrne, Jamie Lunt, Adrian Phillips, Luke Jennings and 5 or 6 others all having great years (with pros & cons for any choice, a lot of the call will come down to how the lads want to shape their restart options) for that last spot.

@Just a thought: Hmmm... good question.
It details "First named team at home" for a lot of the other grades/competitions (like the Connacht U17 Championship that comes immediately before the Senior Club), but it doesn't include that for any of those club games.
I'd imagine the Mayo Champions will be at home given they're named first and Ballina Stephenites beat North London Shamrocks in Ruislip last year (if it went on rotation rather than draw).... but it doesn't mention it explicitly on the fixture page, so very open to correction on that.
