The Connacht U20 football Championship gets underway this week and our first round-robin game is on tomorrow evening against Roscommon. This match gets underway in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park at 5.30pm.
Connacht GAA will be streaming most of these matches live but our match with Roscommon tomorrow evening is being streamed live by good old TG4 on their YouTube channel. This means I’ll be able to embed the live stream here on the blog as well for ease of viewing.
Mayo GAA confirmed the other day details of the playing panel for the U20 Championship and you’ll find this information here.
UPDATE: The team and subs for this match have now been announced by Mayo GAA, details here.

I'll be in attendance. Strong Mayo panel named and and it carries high expectations for the campaign ahead. Like how management haven't focused fully on just picking players from the 2022,23,24 Connacht winning teams and has picked a handful of the most physical and athletic players that has stood out at club level.

Nowhere near the best team we should have at u20 level in the county. Dara Hurley extended panel? Rio Mortimer and Darragh Beirne should be given the game off considering they were playing in a hogan cup final 24 hours ago.
Oisin Cronin has been playing at wing back in challenge games, watch for him and hugh O Loughlin to swap positions. Niall Hurley will play at 14, and Luke Feeney will be 11 or wing forward.
Diarmuid Duffy's extremely strange year continues, no minutes for UCD or the mayo u20s so far, with no real injury to explain why according to people around the camps.
Yousif coghill injured is a big blow he's been excellent in games so far.
Losing Lorcan silke and Dave Slattery to injury meaning they have to leave the panel is so tough on those lads.
Ronan Clarke and James Maheady also opting out.

Interesting team selection to say the least and some notable omissions but all lads selected are good footballers and will give it 100%. Looking forward to the game and the overall campaign and hopeful they can have a good run. Mayo support will hopefully get behind this group in McHale park tomorrow evening, and weather looks good also. Roscommon are defending champions at this age group and will be a big challenge so should a a cracking game under the new rules also.

Am I correct in saying 8 of the 2022 minors, 4 of the 2023 minors and 3 that never played minor before is on that starting 15? the rossies I believe have only 3 of their Connacht winning team from last year named on their starting 15 tomorrow.

@MO2023: Yup, those Mayo numbers look spot on.
Open to correction, but from what I could spot with u16 dev squads or club underage the 3 new lads split with 2 from '22 & 1 from '23 - giving it a 10/5 split on years overall.
Never checked the Ross team from the Connacht Final, but I did glance at the panels for some different numbers.
They have 9 members of last year's winning panel still involved this year and 4 of those included in the 26 for tomorrow (all named to start, at 3, 6, 11 & 14).

Redemption is the name of the game for management this year surely after last year's diabolical campaign..but it may not come this years connacht is very competitive with even Leitrim in contention to win a couple of games. It will be interesting to see what tactics JH comes up with for new rules.

@Lahanman: They've a really impressive side there. With another coming behind them next year from what we've seen at PPS.
Honeyman, Kelly, Cox, O'Rourke, McLaughlin, Guckian & Foley are all serious ballers.
They're at the point where you'd expect them to win a few games.

Is James Horan involve with the U20 this year. Per programme it lists manager and his assistant as Peadar Gardiner and Mark Ryan with selectors Ger Cafferkey Keith Higgins Noel Gibbons.
A lot of U19 on the bench just David Dolan and Jack Keane as U20 the rest are U19 with Daithi Butler being the only player in the squad from last year U17 team.
There is 6 forwards from the 2023 team list in the match day panel 2 playing and 4 on the bench where the 3 best forwards from the 2022 team are nowhere to be seen or 4 if you count Dara Hurley. No Ronan Clarke’s James Maheady. With Diarmuid Duffy and Dara Hurley on the extended panel. You can blame manangement for injurie but You got to ask why are player opting out. This is the 2nd year this had happened. Still 20% of the panel that hadn’t played at U17 level is a remarkable numbers.
Make me wonder, The is 2 coaches or selector involve at Mayo U17 level Whose sons should be involve and aren’t.

If a player was starting last year in the more competitive senior club teans and was one of that clubs better players, well shouldn't he be starting on this team?
I see players listed extended panel that for me are big physical starters?

MayoMessi, has one parent referred to not left the current U17 set up.
Some player selections/omissions are for very good reasons. Other players may prefer focus on exams.

Gizmobob, the voice of reason, The main reason why they switch to U17 and U20 was because of exams impacting the U18s but I never heard of a U18 player that didnt want to play for Mayo because of exams. Let focused on the player that are involve maybe they will surprise us and we might have a Davitt Neary on our hand with the new recruits. Is Darragh Staunton Kevin son.
