Tyrone 1-13 Mayo 2-17: out of nowhere comes a win we really needed

Tyrone 1-13 Mayo 2-17: out of nowhere comes a win we really needed

Okay, I didn’t see this coming.

In truth, not many of us did. But this evening at Healy Park in Omagh Mayo put in their best performance of the year to beat Tyrone by seven points and in the process blow Group 1 wide open. And, as well as that, breathe new life into this Championship campaign for us.

The one factor I failed to mention in my pre-match piece turned out to be hugely relevant this evening. That was the after-effects on Tyrone of last weekend’s totemic battle with Donegal, from which the O’Neill County had just a six-day turnaround.

Amidst the opening exchanges in this evening’s game it soon became clear that Tyrone hadn’t the same bite to them as they’d had at Ballybofey. Once we started to take a chokehold on proceedings – which we did after they scored the opening point but never led after that – it quickly began to dawn on us that there was a win there for us to grasp if only we were able to do this.

Our much-changed team showed four pre-match switches from the side named in advance. Donnacha McHugh, injured in training the other evening, was replaced by Seán Morahan (who looked to the manor born on his full Championship debut), Paddy Durcan lined out instead of Dylan Thornton, while Bob Tuohy and Conal Dawson started in place of Jordan Flynn and Davitt Neary respectively.

Rory Brickenden was our unlikely opening scorer on five minutes and soon after Conal Dawson came on the end of a nice move to edge us ahead. After Aidan O’Shea was fouled close to goal, Ryan O’Donoghue popped over the resultant free. He was doing the same again soon after when Jack Carney was fouled.

They pulled one back – this was just their second score, with 18 minutes played – but we hit back quickly. Rory Brickenden landed his second and then Paddy Durcan (what an addition he proved today) clipped one over after we turned over their kickout.

We had the chance to turn ther screw further but we messed up two goal chances in quick succession. Aidan, soccer-style, drove a shot badly wide and then Ryan shot for goal when it wasn’t really on and his effort was blocked down.

Colm Reape missed the resultant ’45 but, a bit like the darts, that missed effort provided a good marker for another ’45 soon after. This time he drove it over to stretch our lead to five.

The points continued to come for us. Conal Dawson knocked over another one, this time from a Ryan O’Donoghue assist and the Belmullet player added a free after Aidan was fouled.

At last the home team stirred themselves. Canavan bagged two in quick succession, the second from a free, the first time they’d secured back-to-back scores.

We had the final say of the half, though, and what a significant one it was too. We held possession until the hooter went and then worked the ball to Bob Tuohy on the left wing. His hooked shot was tailing off but Morgan spilled the catch and Darren McHale pounced to smash it to the net.

It was a stroke of rather outrageous fortune but, after the week we’ve all had, we were due a bit of good luck. It sent us into the dressing room in rude health.

Despite our healthy half-time lead, however, few of us in Healy Park felt this game was in the bag. We’d had the benefit of a tricky diagonal wind in the first half and now Tyrone would have that advantage in the second half.

They settled quickest after the break. Points from Canavan (a free) and Donnelly cut the gap to six but bracketed between those scores was a second missed goal chance for Ryan O’Donoghue. The same player then pushed a tricky free wide.

We soon had the opportunity to rue those misses. Canavan should have been closed down as he made for goal but we stood off him and he then planted a bullet of a shot to the net.

Now they were right back in it. We traded scores twice after that – a free from Ryan and a point squeezed over delicately by Paddy were ours – but just three points separated the teams with twenty minutes still left to play.

It was then that Davitt Neary came on for Darren McHale, at the same time that Jordan Flynn replaced Bob Tuohy. The Breaffy livewire soon made his presence felt, in the end to match-winning effect.

Winning the game started to look unlikely, though, when Morgan smashed over a two-point free to cut the gap to just one point. It seemed then that a Tyrone tidal wave would sweep away all the good work we’d done up until then.

But what came next was what made this win such an impressive one. We reeled off 1-5 without reply and by the time Tyrone scored again, coincidentally from another Morgan two-pointer, the result was already beyond doubt.

Those winning scores came from Jack Carney, Paddy Durcan (after Davitt Neary had nipped in to turn over the kickout), a Ryan O’Donoghue free, after Davitt had been fouled, and then Ryan’s penalty after Davitt was pushed to the ground after a blistering run in from the left wing. Ryan’s next point – his sole score from play – was the grace note.

Tyrone added a final point after Morgan’s second two-point free. We bagged the final two scores, both from play, with Aidan O’Shea and Jack Coyne getting them to close out a hugely satisfying seven-point win.

This victory doesn’t guarantee us qualification from the group, nor does it mark us out as genuine challengers for Sam. But what it does do, after a horrible week for the county at so many levels, is steady the ship and give us renewed hope ahead of what’s now a proper full-throated Championship clash with Donegal in a fortnight’s time.

Would we have taken that this morning if offered it? Too right we would. Now let’s see where it takes us.

Mayo: Colm Reape (0-1, ’45); Jack Coyne (0-1), Seán Morahan, Rory Brickenden (0-2); Stephen Coen, David McBrien, Enda Hession; Paddy Durcan (0-3), Matthew Ruane; Jack Carney (0-1), Darren McHale (1-0), Bob Tuohy; Aidan O’Shea (0-1), Conal Dawson (0-2), Ryan O’Donoghue (1-6, penalty and five frees). Subs: Jordan Flynn for Tuohy, Davitt Neary for McHale, Fenton Kelly for Dawson, Fergal Boland for Ruane, Sam Callinan for Durcan.

The Professors of Doom.

Professor: We are fucked !

Gombeen: Why !

Professor: Sure look what we have on the sidelines !

Gombeen: Do you mean the lad who took us as close as we have been, to winning the All Ireland since 1951.

Professor: Shut up. Sure look what he did with that other team he was with. Brought them down hill all the way.

Gombeen: Sure he wasn't the manager with that other team ?

Professor: Shut up. We'll be eaten alive by Tyrone with what he has done to this team.

Gombeen: You mean like, if you were in the bog and gotten eaten alive by midges.

Professor: Exactly.

Gombeen: And we could get infected from the bites and end up with squirms from the bites.

For Professors of football who feel they are squirming tonight from the awful eating alive we got from Tyrone because we had no direction from the sidelines, the Pharmacies will be open again on Tuesday and they sell big boxes of squirming tablet's. Get three boxes and take 2 tablets every 30 minutes and hopefully yea might have stopped squirming by the time the ball throws in for our next game against Donegal.

Congratulations to Kevin Mcstay, Stephen Rochford and indeed the entire set up and congratulations to our mighty team who again did us proud tonight. What a fantastic performance.

Stay classy Mayo.

Absolutely delighted with that result and so pleased for the players and management and especially Stephen Rochford who has had to put up with so much abuse even getting the “ credit “ for Donegal being poor before Jimmy came along. Those Mayo players have been bursting their backsides for the last 6 months but have been accused of packing their bags for America and worse . Fair play to them all. Really proud of them and delighted for the supporters who travelled to Omagh. Real hardcore fans who always back the team and who deserve this result. Well done everyone

Told you lads there is always a response in Mayo after a poor showing and with what happened with poor Kevin McStay that increased Mayo chances. I don't overly rate Tyrone, might be better in a few years with players coming through, they were too hyped up for beating Donegal who looked wrecked after winning Ulster and are lost with Patton. Roll on Donegal in the Hyde or Cavan for Mayo next.

I d still have no faith in Rochford or mulligan and think same message being preached too long but he player have pride and when a leader like paddy comes in, the rest follow .
Class well done lads and whatever donegal throws up, it throws up but least ye go out with pride .
No again I'm in minority but I think we can beat Donie.
Mchugh on Murphy, jordan on langan, give it hell for leather , we can beat them .
I genuinely belive our best team is sitting at home but support these lads whilst mad at the cavan performance, we won't let that be the defining moment, credit to boys for pulling it back but flynn had to start the next day . Only for Loftus injury he be a great addition aswell as paddy but poor lads injured and we will wait for him next year ...probably same for conroy

“while Bob Tuohy and Conal Dawson started in place of Davitt Neary” spot on WJ, Neary is such an animal that two replaced him. He had some impact from the bench, he got the ball on the corner of the 45 and the sideline, seconds later we had a penalty.

I think that performance is the best of Mayo, hard to pick a man of the match, Reape superb (that high ball in the first half he picked from under the crossbar, not so long ago would have caused heart palpitations), our backs were tremendous, doggedly forcing turnovers, and keeping them to 13 scores. Our midfield was excellent, Ruane, McBrien, Tuohy, Dawson, McHale, Coen, and Flynn when he came on, were all superb. The old dog Aido drifted in and out superbly.

Our forward play was far sharper, a lot more movement, sharper with our handpassing, and some kicked ball!

Now to get bodies rested and ready for two weeks.

We definitely ironed out a few issues in the past couple of weeks as evidenced today.
The next 2 weeks need to be used to build on what we did well today plus we need, need to start kicking 2 pointers... Kerry kicked 6 or 7 of them today, top teams are doing it,we won compete with the big boys without them.
It takes huge effort to kick 4 to go 4 ahead...this can be wiped out in 30 seconds with 2 from 40 metres. We have to consistently kick minimum of 3 or 4 of these per game from here on or there will be no 'here on ' for us unfortunately.
Maybe today's boost of confidence will give us the courage to take them on.

It’s a shame we don’t have 2 wins in a row but this win hopefully kick starts our season. The lads were immense and so hungry , every breaking ball was won by a Mayo Man. Aido was immense as was Paddy, Colin , Mattie, ROD, Reape and Carney. Every Mayo Player stood up Tonight and played brilliant. This is what we want to see out on that pitch, the potential is there, we just need to believe. I was watching the match tonight in Tralee surrounded by Kerry supporters who gave us no chance. It’s a very proud Mayo Man in Kerry who will drink a toast this Victory. Hopefully we can repeat the passion against Donegal! All we need is Belief. Thank you Kevin, Stephen and Team, You have done us proud Tonight but the journey is only starting. Bring on Donegal! Mayo Abu.

The standard of football displayed by our lads tonight was exceptional. We played with a desire I have not seen in Mayo for a long time. It was a competitive match and Tyrone were not holding back. But the pace and accuracy of Mayo was extremely gratifying to watch. And we had leaders on the pitch. Paddy Durcan was a man on fire at the back while Aidan led the frontal assault. Well done Mayo. One thing to bear in mind, once the dust has settled. Tomorrow, this result won't mean much. Donegal will beat Cavan, meaning we have to at the very least draw with Donegal.
Tyrone will beat Cavan in the last game meaning that realistically, the group will look like this(taking our result out of it for the minute).
Tyrone P3 W2 4 pts
Donegal P2 W1 2Pts
Mayo P2 W1 2 pts
Cavan p3 W1 2pts.

So, if we lose to Donegal, it'll only be ourselves and Cavan on two points, meaning they'll go through on head to head.

If we draw with Donegal, we'll go through (likely in 3rd place because Donegal should win well tomorrow and leave their scoring difference ahead of ours.

If, by some miracle, we were to beat Donegal, we'd top the group on 4 points (head to head with Tyrone) and Donegal would finish 3rd.

Ultimately, we've given ourselves a better chance of topping the group but it doesn't stop us finishing bottom!

WE are from MAYO. THEY are OUR team. I am sick to the teeth of the negativity. Who else are you going to follow with any measure of passion?!

I think I’m here close on a decade. I don’t say much the past few years but I’m always checking in. I’m not a forensic analyst of Gaelic football but I see the whole picture. Sometimes the energy needed here is just too much. I look back and laugh because I gave my most when I had a baby and a toddler. Sometimes on here the ones that are scoffed at have a better sense of reality and the bigger picture than the ones immersed in strategy and so called knowledge. Have a bit of faith and class and that’s to 70% of ye. Stick by your team. It’s not Championship league where you attach yourself to a team you really have nothing to do with.
Stand by your men. STAND UP FOR THE MAYO MEN.
And that means management too who are brave enough stand up with and against the worst of us.
I’m proud. ON WE GO.
UP MAYO.

Five minutes after half time I said that game was crying out for Davitt Neary and so it proved. I wouldn't have taken McHale off though, because I thought he'd had a great game up til that point and still had plenty in him, but maybe the rewatch in the morning will tell a different story. Either way, it worked out just fine. Neary was absolutely sensational when he came on. It'd probably have been a stretch to give him POTM especially after Paddy's heroics but he ran him damn close.

I know the lads on the pod were saying it felt like a friends and family crowd, but there were far more of us there than I thought there would be.

I should have known better than to be so despondent about our prospects, but even having factored in the likely Tyrone fatigue, I didn't think we had that in us this season. The fact that we didn't crumble when the chips were down gives me huge hope.

And I don't ever recall Rochford giving a post-match interview like that, not even on his first time around.

Liamontherunsince 51 you talk about consistency. Only Kerry have shown any consistency this year and that’s because they really haven’t played any of the big guns. Donegal win Ulster and lose to Tyrone who lose to us. Meath beat Dublin but lose to Louth. Dublin after losing to Meath beat Galway who had beaten us.. Louth have lost both their games since Leinster final. Armagh lose Ulster final but beat Derry. I could keep going through the teams. It is what makes this year’s championship so interesting. No doubt the reaction to our win tonight will be as excessive as our loss to Cavan. It’s always agony or ecstasy, boom or bust.. The unfortunate position is that we will more than likely need something from the Donegal game and that’s not too likely to happen. But to hell with it, that’s for another day. Super win. Let’s enjoy it. Best result since we beat Kerry in Killarney a few years ago. Up Mayo

Fair play to Mayo today. A typical backs against the wall performance and it was brilliant to see.

Papers over plenty of stuff but if nothing else it at least gives us something to shout about against Donegal in 2 weeks time and unbelievably leaves us in a great position to actually go and top the group! Wouldn't that just be the most Mayo thing!

Fair play aswell to those who travelled. Unfortunately these days its much more difficult to get to games, even before factoring in the stupid throw-in times and extortionate costs, so I admire those who can still give their all to travel with the team. Ye were definitely heard on the telly!

Today was a very good day. The team was well prepared and the strategy was spot on. We had a debutant starting and and the cloth was cut to fit today. Surprises on the starting 15 and they worked their socks off.

I would have been delighted with a good performance nevermind a win, but the fight and the hunger and courage they showed was brilliant. I was beaming with the display we put in.

It will be a happy camp for the next 2 weeks that's for sure and I would say there is no one prouder tonight than Kevin Mcstay. I'm so happy for him and all the management team.

A performance built off hard work and the whole group pulling together and proving they are able to mix it at the top level.
They haven't backed up a big championship performance with another big one since Galway & Dublin in 2021.
They will have to back this one up to stay in the championship and avoid their earliest exit since 2018.

Two weeks ago they dug a big hole for themselves, this week they are halfway back out of it.
They have proven they can do it when no one gives them any hope, now they have a chance to prove they are up there with the best of them.

Let's hope they have another one in them in two weeks.

Brilliant to be proved so wrong but it makes the performance against Cavan all the more puzzling. Were Mayo training too heavily? Hard to know. This game reminded me of the trip to Killarney two years ago where we ran Kerry ragged but failed to follow it up and the rest is history.
For now we can bask in the glow of an outstanding performance and a proper footballing one at that.
Some leadership from Paddy and Aidan and the youngsters really stood up.
Thankfully we ditched the short kickouts and were all the better for it.
One criticism though. Our lack of 2pointers. The eight teams in action yesterday hit the following 2pts.
Kerry 7. Louth 6. Meath 5. Roscommon 5. Down 4. Cork 3. Tyrone 2. Mayo 0.
This needs to be addressed.

Like many others, pre-match, I couldn’t honestly find any logic to support a Mayo win other than ‘you never know with Mayo’ - which is no logic. So happy for the team and all involved that the plan came together, and pride was restored. Like others have mentioned, have to also give a special call out to all the travelling support. What a game to have witnessed first hand. Fair play.

Another huge challenge ahead in Donegal, which will likely be a must-win. As we have effectively entered the knockout stage of the championship, the reality is that Mayo will have to back up yesterday’s performance with something better for each remaining game. Agree with others re lack 2 pointers so hopefully that’s something they will work on for starters, although I do believe the wind often has a significant influence in the 2 pointer stats.

All the very best to the lads going forward, but regardless of what happens, Kevin’s situation provides perspective on what’s really important. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Huge credit to the players and management for yesterdays performance and, more importantly, result. The heavy criticism they received from the Cavan game was well deserved therefore the must also get the plaudits for the win in Omagh.
However, that must be the benchmark, that's the standard that they must measure themselves by. While it was a great performance it wasn't faultless and the errors still need to be ironed out if we are to beat Donegal.
They've set a standard now, a benchmark which they must not dip below. They put themselves in this hole by the lacklustre performance v Cavan and they've given themselves a chances of digging themselves out of it. Now they must go and do something they have yet to do in 2 years, and that's put 2 impressive performances back to back. They have a chance and having such a leader like Paddy Durcan back will help to maintain those standards both on and off the field.

Can anyone please confirm this for me - I have a horrible feeling that points difference does not matter in the group phase - this means that if we don't beat Donegal and Tyrone beat Cavan ( a likely outcome) then Mayo and Cavan have 2 points each and Cavan will progress because they won the head-to-head game with us - so the only outcome for Mayo progressing is to beat (or draw with) Donegal - this must be correct as RTE kept saying Armagh have won their group already - that is because even if Dublin had a better points difference to them - Armagh won their head-to-head - so this counts more than any point difference?

@Terry Loftus, that's pretty much it, but if you check out @TsuDhoNim posts in some of the more recent threads you'll find a fuller explanation .

2hope thanks for the clarification - was hoping this wasn’t the case but we know now we need to win or draw against Donegal or Cavan to beat Tyrone

We sure do Terry but our fate is still in our own hands which means we know exactly what we have to do to progress,so let's get it done.

2hops thanks - To remain at the top table in GAA we have to harnass that intense free flowing passing game which we saw against Tyrone , but in every game we play - so far we all know that but it never happens - but next week it has to let’s just keep the other team guessing and trying to work out how we play - the return of Paddy Durcan is a big step but I do feel Aiden is really still so so important for us and he ( as we know) will not be around for much longer so we need to plan for that too - big plus too was a big improvement defensively - don’t allow them to settle and play - we are one of the fittest youngest teams out there so come on lads let’s see another intense performance - keep Donegal guessing and do not let them play - haha sorry finally one more question on the group 2hops - what if both games are drawn - I take it them it’s points difference ?

Many thanks Swallowtail…I was never remotely close to be a County baller but what I can continue to do is use my vocal cords / lungs (set a personal best 115 decibels) to roar them on…all help welcome!
