Here’s a quick round-up of today’s club championship results.
Starting with the game in which silverware was on offer, which was the Junior B Championship final between Achill and Kilmovee Shamrocks, played under the lights this evening at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park. Achill came out on top in this decider on a scoreline of 3-11 to 2-8, sealing their third Junior B title in a row.
Next the Senior relegation decider, which saw Belmullet hit Kilmeena for five goals to win by 5-5 to 1-9. That secured top flight status for the Erris lads but the result sends unfortunate Kilmeena straight back down to Intermediate for next year.
The Intermediate semi-finals, meanwhile, were won by Moy Davitts and Crossmolina Deel Rovers after two extremely hard-fought penultimate round ties, which were both decided by the minimum margin. Moy Davitts squeezed past Davitts by 0-11 to 1-7, while Crossmolina beat Ballinrobe after extra-time by 0-15 to 1-11.

Would be some atmosphere if ballina was the venue for the intermediate final.i know it most likely wouldn’t happen but it would gather a massive crowd with great atmosphere

why akram didnt shoot that off his right foot instead of cutting back and shooting off his weaker left foot and miss kicking the ball even though it looked like it was picked clean off the ground on the line hard to see though.

Club football in Mayo is poor based on that game! Breaffy will be sick - so many missed chances.
Green&Red says:
October 6, 2024 at 6:21 pm
I have to say I’ve never seen a more one sided ref today then Connelley. Did everything he could to win Breffey the game today. Knockmore showed why they win county titles and why Breffey can’t. Took their goal chances. Unfortunately a lot of talk about Breffey and Sean yet an injury hit Knockmore team outfought them. Tactics can only get you so far, but heart desire and culture tend to separate the winners from the losers. Knockmore and ballina two clubs cut from the same cloth and fully earned their right to be in the county final. Sound be a cracker of a final but both teams hit bad with injuries.
Cp says:
October 6, 2024 at 6:21 pm
@clare last play in normal time.free 3/4 yards outside 45 and o Shea tells cagey to go back as he taking it himself .comes up well short.vahey a good free take aswell
Green&Red says:
October 6, 2024 at 6:23 pm
Cp also worth remembering AOS was quick to wave his finer to the Knockmore crowd when he kicked the leveller. I like him but sometimes he doesn’t do himself any favours.
Sean Burke says:
October 6, 2024 at 6:24 pm
Club football in Mayo is giving us a warning light these last 4/5 years and I’m not sure people see it at all , the quality of players is way below what it was and should be if we are expecting to compete like we’ve got used to . When you see former fringe county players of 5/6 yrs ago tearing it up & very little of new showing promise , I find it alarming .
Ontheroad13 says:
October 6, 2024 at 6:28 pm
Ah will ya stop, vahey missed one earlier in the game so aidan had every right to go for the shot, he scored one last week from a similar distance I was surprised he didn't go with the outside of the boot though.
Sean Burke says:
October 6, 2024 at 6:30 pm
There was no time though , are we well in the head at all in Mayo .
GBXI says:
October 6, 2024 at 6:31 pm
@green&red, knockmore took their goal chances all right but there was very little between the teams, O'Shea could easily have won it for Breaffy. Knockmore deserved their win but I was far from impressed, the missed frees from Orme and Naughton, the easy ball turned over coming out of defence, Reape's poor kickouts. I think it's a very weak senior final.
Clare says:
October 6, 2024 at 6:40 pm
I think Ballina in fairness to them fought back well in 2nd half despite all the injuries did well though...
Always a good game between Ballina & Knockmore hopefully it's a good final.
Green&Red says:
October 6, 2024 at 6:41 pm
GBXI it wasn’t the most amazing game of football but it was miles ahead of the other semi final. I get awful frustrated when I see people criticise teams that win. We speak so hugely of Claremorrises young team, Westports amazing skillful players, Breffey and AOS, Castlebar and their incredible depth of played and resources. Why aren’t those teams in a final?? Yet people fail to acknowledge that clubs like Knockmore and I’d include Garrymore, haven’t a quarter of the resources or population but get absolutely everything out of themselves. And have stayed senior for over half a century each. We tend to criticise teams who find ways to win but big up teams that seem to constantly underachieve. Knockmore won today because they had the balls to go and win it. And it’s the same story with Breffey as it has been for 15 years now.
Willie Joe says:

Green&Red - I've let you away with one pop at the ref but you can't make an accusation like that about him so I've deleted what you've posted. Surely you can enjoy your club's win without resorting to that?

I was agreeing with green & reds point of not acknowledging smaller teams then westport etc & resources etc.
Wasn't agreeing with the ref part.

Knockmore had 3 adult teams only a couple of years ago not sure if they still currently do not sure I'd class them in the same bracket as garrymore.
Sean Burke says:
October 6, 2024 at 7:06 pm
Their tradition is glorious in fairness , they have something about them . They have 10 moclair cup wins . That’s some achievement for a rural club .
GBXI says:
October 6, 2024 at 7:07 pm
No one is questioning the legitimacy of Knockmore's win Green & Red, just commenting on the poor standard. Breaffy is a tiny parish beside the county town so it's a big achievement for them to be senior too. I would be reluctant to make big statements like having the balls to win it when it really could have gone either way. My reading is Breaffy's panel depth came back to haunt them again. Their fringe players, even on the starting 15, are very weak when their leaders get tired or have an off day like today.
I saw Ballina against Castlebar and while they won they were so average in doing so. Mayo club football was so strong between 2011 and 2018 that I hope the current standard doesn't effect the senior team.
2 hops says:
October 6, 2024 at 7:09 pm
You are right @Green&red. Knockmore rolled up the sleeves when they went a man down.
Breaffy lost their shape and discipline in that last 10 minutes.
First Knockmore goal came from Aido and Carter taking each other out of it in the middle of the park.
Reape kept Knockmore in it when Breaffy were on top whereas Vahey had little to do until extra time. Knockmore probably deserved the win on heart alone.
I actually thought it was a good and enjoyable day's football with good performers on all 4 teams.

Anne-Marie says:
October 6, 2024 at 7:27 pm
Gillactico I agree that Davitt Neary is a really exciting prospect but he needs to work on his discipline. Very prone to reacting, conceded a needless free against Westport last week flinging his marker to the ground and there was a similar incident today. Refs notice that stuff early on and it does you no favours. Also he wasted a golden opportunity for Breaffy by taking on a play hinself when there was a man inside screaming for it and the goal was on. All things that can be worked on and hopefully he will, because I think he is a serious talent.
Gizmobobs says:
October 6, 2024 at 7:28 pm
On the road, it was a red surely, dangerous foot tackle luckily no serious injury.
Knockmore weakened with injuries, Breaffy really should be winning that. Some strange tactics/decisions proved costly.
Fair play to Knockmore management trusting two minor lads to come in and win it for them.

Hopefully Ann-Marie that element of his game can be worked on like say Jordan Flynn who's discipline has improved immensely since his early days .On the missed goal opportunity,in his defense he created the chance with a great run and was unlucky not to score.

Irwin & Neary the only players to get me out of my seat at any point over the weekend in McHale park, with a couple of McLaughlins doing the same last weekend.
Had no dog in any of the fights. Just passing a Sunday afternoon. Right teams won in my opinion -Ballaghadereen had their chances and made a balls of them. Goal chances aside a couple of bad misses in the 2nd half will stick in the craw tonight. Callinan good even with Kuba scoring 1-7.....
Breaffy waited for it to happen for them and it never did. Conor O Shea would be great if he could actually find a team mate. A lot of players in the second game let it pass them by. Ruane (until injury) & McHale kept their respective teams ticking with proper graft when it mattered. Great impact from the late subs in ET too, good job as you just cant trust Orme to step up when needed - although he kicked plenty tasty ones too.
Knockmore will need Ruttledge to get the card overturned - i suspect a lack of video evidence might help him. Missed it myself but the Breaffy sub roaring like a mad man at the umpire probably did enough to sway them to get onto the ref - i doubt they would have otherwise.

A fantastic day in McHale Park. And great to see the surface and facilities shining through after some tough coverage the past few years.
Really feel for the lads here in Breaffy. This was a great year and even though no final it feels like the most promising I've witnessed in my time. We'll come again.
Huge credit to Knockmore. Christ above they're like the fecking Catalans with that La Masia they just pull a few gems from nowhere. As I've said before, you hear nothing of them underage then BANG, out pops a senior footballer who can win any game. On the way out I heard their division 2 team was huge for them this year. A rural club with that level of competitiveness is admirable. If they get a spec of the players back they'll have a chance. I sense Ruttledge will be back that incident was apparently very minor and a yellow at best. Good gamesmanship I imagine and we nearly had it...
Ballina value for the win in extra time. They really don't go out to entertain. You would wonder if the Corofin lesson last year has them playing this way. Yet again I did witness last year's county final up close and personal and there is a theme with Ballina games. Winning isn't pretty and they'll do anything.
What a final. Any rooms going in Ballina for the build up?
Cp says:
October 6, 2024 at 10:50 pm
I think the lack of video evidence could hurt ruttledges case.anyone I’ve talked too didn’t see the actual incident but there wasn’t much protest by ruttledge.
Size 5 says:
October 6, 2024 at 10:59 pm
Don't think ruttledge will be back, obvious strike off the ball but will the officials have seen it?
Neary has buckets of talent but seems to play in patches.
Was that's Dempseys first game back from injury? Kicked two great scores.
When Breaffy had the extra man they had the game won, Knockmore had to concede the kickout and Breaffy were finding loads of space. Moment of madness for the sub to get a red card, from then on Breaffy went into panic mode and the wheels came off. A lot of walking wounded on the pitch at the end but the Knockmore subs had that bit extra quality. To score two goals in extra time while not having a single goal chance in normal time is dome achievement.
Also Reape must have made 2-3 one on one saves and have about 10 shots drop into his hands.
Gizmobobs says:
October 6, 2024 at 11:08 pm
Breaffy very lucky not to down a man in first half as well, Nearly I think it was that came in on McHale with looked like strike to face.
McHale is some warrior, barely up to O'Shea's shoulder and done another sterling job on him.
Ballina the better team in the first game, not sure Ballaghadereen believed or tried to win it in second half when they had great chance to push on. Great year for them though after a tough time for the club.
Supermac says:
October 6, 2024 at 11:18 pm
David McHale is some bit of stuff surely, he always gets the upper hand on AOS despite being dwarfed by him, he completely wipedchim out in the county final a few years back too. Proper old school defender
As enjoyable as both county semis were I don't see a connacht winner coming out of them. I would say Padraig Pearses or whoever comes out of Galway would have beaten any of the 4 teams today
