The weekend’s results and semi-final draws

The quarter-final stage in the senior and intermediate club championships didn’t disappoint, with plenty of cracking ties taking place over the weekend.

At senior level, Castlebar Mitchels had six points to spare over hosts Aghamore in the afternoon match yesterday while Garrymore dug out a gritty two-point win on home turf over fancied Crossmolina last night. This afternoon, meanwhile, Breaffy’s impressive form continued with a six-point win over Westport, while goal-happy Belmullet had eight points to spare over Claremorris.

The senior relegation decider, meanwhile, will be between Balla and Ballaghaderreen. The former let Mayo Gaels off the hook at Hollymount on Friday night while yesterday Ballaghaderreen found neighbours Charlestown too hot to handle in the other relegation semi-final.

In the intermediate championship, Ballinrobe came away with a win in a high-scoring game from Ardnaree yesterday, while today Davitts had six points to spare over Ballyhaunis and Moy Davitts came out on top in a rip-roaring contest against Parke/Keelogues/Crimlin.

The Kiltane/Islandeady game was postponed due to a bereavement on the Islandeady side and will now be played instead at Kiltane next Saturday (26th) with a 4.30pm throw-in.

In the relegation semi-finals Kiltimagh beat Cill Chomáin while The Neale came out on top against Louisburgh.

The most wide open championship in a long time. Does anybody know what weekend the final is to be played?

Breaffy v Castlebar in Charlestown? Do they need to bring neighbouring clubs that far ?

What's the logic behind the Charlestown venue does anyone know?

Don't rule out Castlebar Mitchels.

Cian McHale hitting 14 points for Moy Davitts in Mayo IFC 1/4 Final has to go down as one of the best performances in the county for a long time.

People are delirious over Clifford doing the same in Kerry, in a much weaker championship, so we should definitely be lauding Cian's display today

Whose bright idea was it to have two clubs from the same parish 3km apart travel 40km away to play each other?

It is pure daftness bringing castlebar and breaffy to Charlestown for the semi-final. what is wrong with mchale park?

It's ridiculous and the price of fuel.

Just looking at Kobe last night he already looks to have put on muscle since the Final whatever St Kilda have him doing its working.

Jimbo. You are 100% correct. Would they be better of to bring it to Tuam? Distance the same. What a decision. But again its Mayo GAA, nothing new. If you look at Roscomm, they play their semi finals and finals in stadium in Roscommon Town. In Galway they play their semi finals either in Tuam or Pearse stadium. Tell a supporte to travel from Shrule/ Glencorrib to travel across the County to a semi final in Charlestown and the cost of fuel makes the mind boggle. The GAA in Mayo dont care about the supporters. If the County Board put on the 2 Semi Finals same day in McHale Park see the crowd they would attract. I'll say no more.

You have to admire Garrymore, incredible how they stay so competitive at senior level with their size.
It was looking worrying there for a while with rural depopulation that the big towns Ballina/Westport/castlebar would be far too dominant.

With my own team gone out id love to see Garrymore win it out, what a year Hession is having by the way.

Nailed on allstar (and i suspect a poty candidate along with ROD and Clifford) and continuing his form with club, he must be a pest to play against

Breaffy v Castlebar should have been fixed for Kiltimagh

O

Ontheroad13 says:

They obviously want to play the games at club grounds for a better atmosphere ane they chose Charlestown and ballina because they are the best club grounds outside of mchale park especially to handle big crowds which both games will have. Crossmolina v westport was played in Charlestown last year in the semi final and it was a unbelievable atmosphere and game.

Breaffy and Castlebar played in Charlestown in the semi final in 2023 and it was a cracking atmosphere. Like Ontheroad says, there aren't too many club grounds that can host a semi. It's either that or go back to playing both semi finals back-to-back in McHale Park imo.

G

GBXI says:

ThirdManIn, why couldn't Cloger (Ballintuber) host the game?

T

ThirdManIn says:

GBXI, it "could" host it I suppose, but so could Parke, Balla, Islandeady etc but are those more suitable to host it than Charlestown is the real question. Much more parking available in Charlestown, bigger stand as well, better viewing points outside of the stand, overall it's a much more suitable venue for a big crowd.

A trip to Charlestown isn't the huge expedition it is being made out to be. All things considered, it's the best place to host the game outside of McHale Park.
