Taking advantage of the good weather, I’ve been largely out of the loop for the last few days but, back at base, I guess now’s as good a time as any to catch up on the matches involving Mayo teams that took place over the weekend.
The action began on Friday evening when the county’s Minor footballers just came up short in the Connacht MFC final against Roscommon. Chasing a fourth successive provincial title at this age grade, our lads chances suffered a hammer blow when they lost both midfielders, Cian May and Adam Kelly, to injury either side of half-time.
Despite this they battled hard all the way to the end, losing out by 2-14 to 1-15 at the finish. The result means that they’ll now face the Leinster champions in the All-Ireland quarter-final, with that Leinster decider, between Offaly and Louth, fixed for Monday week (19th May).
The Wee County, by the way, following their Leinster SFC final exploits at Croke Park today, are now on course for a clean sweep of provincial titles this year. We’re up against them in the All-Ireland U20 semi-final this coming Friday, of course, with the winners of that one set to meet Tyrone in the final.
Back to the weekend’s results and the next match to mention is the hurlers’ Rackard Cup victory over Sligo on Saturday. This win, on a scoreline of 1-32 to 1-17, was the lads’ fourth successive victory in the campaign and it ensured qualification for the final. Silverware and a return to Ring Cup status for next year are now coming into view for them.
The county’s women footballers, by contrast, had another disappointing day today. Their LGFA Connacht SFC Round 3 meeting with Galway in Tuam was a largely meaningless fixture, as the sides are set to play each other again in the Connacht final in a fortnight, but the result was still a downer from our perspective, as Galway ran out winners by 2-13 to 0-9.
There were also plenty of club matches on in the county over the weekend. A full list of all the results from these games is here.

On the Rackard Cup are both finalist promoted or just the winner of the final?

Cian May going off V the Rossies was the difference. Mayo Missed a few early chances in the first half. Great game of football all the same.

We’ll need all hands on deck in Longford on Friday night. Louth will be bringing a hunk of that 65,000+ crowd with them, and they’ll be full of swagger.

Can tickets be bought at turnstiles in Longford or is it same as senior that you have to purchase through ticket master

Cian May was big loss, I agree, any news of injury, looked like collar bone to me. Pitches are very hard at the moment and I doubt they would be watered.

Cian Maye has a cast on his arm. Other midfielder has the shoulder injury.

It looked to me like collar bone/shoulder in Kelly's case. For Cian seemed more like wrist or maybe even thumb from the way he was holding it coming off. But I'm no medic.

Just speaking of medics,Adam Kelly came down heavily on his shoulder, physio came in and tended to him, seemingly deemed him fit to carry on. He brought down the very next kickout with a great fetch, but unfortunately landed on the shoulder again, and that was that.

I’d do the same km79 only I’ve a family thing on down home that I can’t get out of . I really don’t understand people organising parties / weddings or funerals during championship, absolutely no consideration for those who like to attend games .

@ Sean Burke i take your comment was tongue in cheek. If you were serious you’re clearly touched. How selfish of him/her to “decide” to die during the “championship”.

@MaryM...''touched'' is a minimum requirement for a Mayo supporter.
