The weekend’s results

The result of the weekend was, of course, that astonishing one at O’Moore Park this afternoon, where Meath finally brought Dublin’s long Leinster hegemony to an end. All of a sudden, the Championship has become a whole load more interesting.

There were two Mayo games on this weekend and so it’s worth, for the record, noting how these went.

The first involved the county’s hurlers who yesterday made it three wins from three outings in this year’s Rackard Cup. Yesterday’s win was over Louth, with a final scoreline of 2-25 to 2-18 at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park.

The win puts us on top of the table after three rounds, with matches still to come against Sligo (in Castlebar on 10th May) and Fermanagh (in Enniskillen on 17th May). The Magpies are currently second in the table so a win for us against them would guarantee the county a place in the final.

This afternoon the LGFA’s Connacht Championship got underway. This year it includes Leitrim as well as ourselves and Galway, with the Ridge County having won last year’s All-Ireland Intermediate title.

In today’s Round 1 clash between ourselves and Leitrim at Swinford, the visitors showed they were more than ready to compete at Senior level. Seven adrift at half-time, they came storming back into it in the second half and Liam McHale’s side were relieved to emerge with a 2-11 to 1-11 win at the finish.

Reports on this game are available from Ladies Gaelic Football, Western People and Mayo News.

This is as low as Mayo Ladies football has been in my lifetime. No offence meant to Leitrim but overall with the league as well..
I'd say the review at the end of the season will be interesting

We just can't foresee what this championship might bring. Cork must be still shaking their heads when they ponder on what Meath managed yesterday. Football needs more of these results for its own sake. With a bit (possibly a lot) of luck, and better forwards, Down might've been stealing Meath's moment in the sun this morning.
Dessie must be slightly amused himself in the knowledge the mastermind behind the FRC, Jim Gavin, ironically upended Dublin in its year of inception.

Meath kicked the ball. Great kicking. No over and back and pass the parcel. I pray Mayo were playing stupid in the last three games and we see the real team on Sunday. If we revert for even 5 minutes back to old ways, we will go nowhere.

@My Ball, there might be no one left around to listen to that review the way things are going with the Ladies.
MacHales tenure has been an unmitigated disaster from his appointment to this weekend. Anyone familiar with the workings of the county board, that manager appointment procedures and the subsequent "threatening" of legal process will know that it was doomed to fail right from the off.
Incompetence from the top down has led us to where we are, which is from competing in All Ireland finals to now struggling to beat Leitrim.

Pebblesmeller I have asked the question before why a large number of players opted out of the panel. You seem to know a lot about the set up so perhaps you could fill me in. As far as I can see Liam McHale is doing well with the players at his disposal as they are a young team and remember Leitrim won the All Ireland Intermediate last year. So if you compare the ladies and the mens performances v Leitrim, the ladies are head and shoulders above the men based on the level of opposition. So if as you claim McHales appointment was an unmitigated disaster I shudder to think what you make of McStays appointment.

Is it not the case that the Mayo Ladies lost alot of players to Australia over the last number of years.I was mentioned to me as a factor by someone who follows ladies football closely.

The current managers appointment was clouded in controversy right from the off. The Ladies executive initially rejected MacHales application and appointed the other candidate in the race. However, legal proceedings were threatened.
Pretty soon in MacHales tenure the cracks began to appear. Some of the older, more experienced players were not selected/forced to retire/dropped (take your pick). Yes, some players went to Australia but so did Kerry, Armagh and Meath players but they will be back for the championship. What wasn't that done for the Mayo girls abroad?
Over the last number of weeks there has been a steady withdrawal from the squad. The reason he has such a young squad is not by design. I know a few of these younger players and some of them are 1st year minors for their clubs. While they are talented and the future of Mayo Ladies, they are in way too deep, way too early and without on field leadership around them. I am not having a dig at the Ladies players themselves, I was involved at club level for over 12 years at all age groups U12 to Senior, so I know the commitment these girls give, often with very little supports.

As for McStay v MacHales appointment?? I believe the first and most basic requirement for a manager is to leave the squad in a better place than where you found it. If McStay wins Connaught on Sunday then I think it is fair to say that, at the very least, we have remained at our level and a haul of 1 League + a Connaught title in 3 years would be some grounds for optimism and he would have a good case to make regarding a relatively successful period. MacHale will not be leaving the Mayo ladies in the same position he took them over in. To date, it has been a total failure. Both McStay and MacHale have lost key players too, so it's not a case that McStay hasn't been affected in this regard either.
However, should Galway win on Sunday then McStays period will be just as much a failure as MacHales has been. Such is the fine margins of football!!

Pebblesmeller Thanks for the explanation as I didn't really know what happened. I have no problem with the mens footballers, it's just their style of play. It was interesting to see the analysis from Paul Flynn of how Kildare have changed their style to the use of quick diagonal ball and more direct play. And remember they played more pass the parcel for the past few years than we ever did. While they didn't win and should have they still gave their supporters something to cheer about.I know it's late in the day for us to change but hopefully there comes a time especially after Sligo and Leitrim where Mgt will have to take their heads out of the sand and try something new. The Galway full back line were exposed by Armagh in the air last year and we have the man to do it. It's a 50/50 game on Sunday if we use the right approach and I feel Galway are completely over hyped.

Beat Galway.
Beat the Dubs in Castlebar.
Go down to cork and beat them.
Beat Armagh in Cavan to win the group.
Kerry in the Quarters.
Donegal in the semis.
Galway in the final.

7 games in 13 weeks to win an all Ireland. Fingers crossed ?

Pebblesmeller - I've had to edit out bits of that comment, both for legal reasons and because it includes claims about alleged happenings that can't be confirmed.

Fair enough on the legal bit WJ, but I can confirm everything I have said, if needed. I had to sit through it in county board meetings.

Lots of talk about putting down markers v Galway on Sunday and getting stuck into a few Galway fellas who are not flavour of the month here. All well and good BUT do we want to see something happening like it happened in the Cork v Tipp hurling match Sunday. The extremely talented Tipp corner forward got sent off before the game even started. The Tipp challenge collapsed and the huge crowd was treated to a non event. Now we will have our hands more than full in a 15 v 15 match with our neighbours. There is no sense in doing anything remotely stupid like that. Football is a manly game that allows you to be physical and play with controlled aggression, so plenty opportunity to be hard and fair during the game. But we can’t afford anyone doing anything stupid. The young Tipp lad no doubt was advised to get his retaliation in first. He missed all of yesterday’s game and will be suspended for the next one as well. A tough lesson for him to learn and of course to anyone who may have advised him to “put down a marker “

@to win just once, I couldn't agree more, need to be measured in the way we get stuck in. The new rules mean a red is even worse than in hurling, almost impossible to win a match where you have a man less in defence every time they have a the ball and a man less in attack whenever you have it.

We were hell bent on paying Galway back in 2017 and 2018, but the reds to Keith Higgins and Diarmuid each year seriously killed our chances. Discipline is very important, especially now with the refs being told that any head or neck challenges should mean red.

Hard look past an ulster team winning it again this yr..I went for Tyrone and I'll stick with it but one of the big 3 Donegal Tyrone and Armagh bring a different level altogether from what I've saw so far...early days I know unless galway or kerry have a say in it.

I can just imagine Kevin mcstay in the dressing room now in a screaming frothing at the mouth rage to get out there and lay down a marker and sort out that young pup finnerty

Like when he called upon his fellow Rossies in that documentary he had made 1985 :)

Looking forward to the game, I reckon players will cut loose and have a craic at it. If they abandon the style of play they’ve become accustomed to there’s no reason we cannot win. It’s the same team as last year that should have won bar Tommy.

Whatever about markers , we need to let the referee know if he’s making mistakes against us , absolutely no advantage having a home crowd unless we put some form of pressure n through noise

Looks like Liam McHale leaving the men’s setup wasn’t the negative some made it out to be, other than the negatives it has had in terms of impact for the Ladies team.
