Another weekend is already upon us and, once again, there are matches taking place that involve county teams.
The action starts later this evening when the county’s Minor footballers take on Roscommon in the Connacht MFC final. This provincial final throws in this evening at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park at 6.30pm.
The ticket link for the game is here and TG4 are showing it live on their online Channel 2, with deferred coverage on the main TG4 channel at 7.30pm.
We’re aiming to have a Final Whistle pod on the game later on as well. I’m a bit out of the loop on that, however, as I’m not around at the minute and so I won’t see the game either won’t have any match report on it here.
Tomorrow the focus switches to hurling. Hastings Insurance MacHale Park is also the venue for our Rackard Cup meeting with Sligo, where throw-in is 2pm. With three wins from three, a place in the Rackard Cup final is now coming into view and victory over second-placed Sligo tomorrow would all but guarantee this. The ticket link for this game is here.
On Sunday, it’s women’s football and the LGFA Connacht SFC Round 3 meeting between ourselves and Galway, which is, in effect, a dry-run for the upcoming Connacht final. Sunday’s game takes place in Tuam and throw-in at St Jarlath’s Park is 1pm that afternoon. The ticket link for it is here and Midwest will have live radio commentary on the game.
The best of luck to all the Mayo teams in Championship action this weekend.

The minors lost by 9pts to Roscommon in the round robin phase. Will be interesting to see the trajectories of both teams in the weeks since that game. Hoping for similar entertainment to all the games so far. These kids and their mentors are so refreshing.

Losing one midfielder we might have coped... losing both was too much.
Great game though!

A bad mistake cost us but that's how it goes. I'm not sure that was a foul at the end but we seemed to be giving away too many soft frees.

Great game, the new rules are a godsend,
Louth or Offaly up next for them

Anybody notice what part of the Rossie blocked Ben Holmes shot on goal...looked suspiciously like a foot block in real time but I'll hold judgement.

Poor finish to both halves is what cost Mayo tonight. Need to lift heads for Louth or Offaly next.

I’m watching this on TG4 now and we are flying it. I was just saying I wished the senior team played like this. Then I come on here and I find out we are going to lose. So disappointed!

I know Mayo are still involved and I’m not complaining about the result tonight but that refereeing performance was laughable.
I try not to criticise refs but ffs!

@JoeG...a pure fusspot.
It was a great game of football in spite of him.
JoeG says:

Never a foot block. The defender did well. I know it’s hard but the team aren’t in much of a different position than if they’d won.
JoeG says:
May 9, 2025 at 9:08 pm
2 hops it was great entertainment but for the love of God in a game like that let the play flow. For both sides I was scratching my head why they were being penalised.
Hopefully the 2 midfielders aren’t badly injured and we improve again.
Well done to the team and David Heaney and Co.
Nephin says:

JoeG. Probably but I think Louth will beat Offaly as they looked a much better team in the semifinals and we have to play the winner. Would much prefer Offaly.

Seemed like a wrist injury for May...with Kelly it seemed like shoulder or collar bone. He'll do very well to figure next day out imo.

Sickening in fairness but no more than the under 20s these lads are playing a lovely brand a football that's great to watch. Seriously unfortunate with the two boys in midfield going off injured but have to say i was liking young no 20 who came in, spraying some lovely kick passes in to the full forwards, and always the head up looking for them, Tony making hay from it, cracking shot on him. Great to see. Heads up lad's, keep it going. Ps the ref had a bit of a mare..
2 hops says:
May 9, 2025 at 9:28 pm
@Nephin...and when the poor lad questioned it,it was brought up for a tap over!

Left Boot says:
May 9, 2025 at 9:36 pm
The referee was a total anti fast continuous football this evening, two good teams having a go at fast flowing football but no the whistle was blowing every 30 seconds, he just destroyed the game mostly, Mayo will learn from that game.
JoeG says:
May 9, 2025 at 9:44 pm
Paddyjoejohntom. You’re right but unfortunately not all refereees are officiating them in the same way.
Sometimes you’ll watch a game where the ref lets lots go and it’s really enjoyable and then you get a game where the ref blows for every trivial contact but not all the time and that is what makes fans fume.
2 hops says:
May 9, 2025 at 10:05 pm

2 hops ,yes, in fairness, I am being a little harsh on the lads.
On an unrelated topic, I can't for the life of me understand what is the point on u17s wearing GPS units ! ?
Just let them play ball ffs

A good game but unfortunately not a good result. A lot like Sunday if I am honest. Good first and third quarters but caught at the death. 3 very good Connacht finals in the 3 grades. The new rules have improved the quality immensely.Could have won all 3 or indeed lost all 3. All our teams still involved in competition
Eastcorkexile says:

Think of last year when we beat Galway, what was it, 2 or 3 times in the championship but lost the all Ireland. Still a joke when a competition allows that to happen.
But will completely contradict myself and claim it’s not a joke if we do that to the Rossies this year.
Anyway it’s all about development, get 5 or 6 of them lads into the senior setup in 5 years time and we won’t be thinking who won the 2025 Connacht minor.
