The weekend’s fixtures

The weekend’s fixtures

The Bank Holiday weekend is already upon us and the season of the long, dark evenings will be too once the clocks go back in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It is, of course, county final weekend, with last weekend’s storm, which saw the shifting of the senior final to tomorrow evening, ensuring that all three county finals are on over Saturday and Sunday. Proper order too, it never really made any sense to stagger them over two weekends.

The action gets underway at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park late tomorrow afternoon, with the Junior final between Bonniconlon and Cill Chomáin. This Petie McDonnell Cup decider throws in at 4.45pm.

Podcast club members will have heard our Junior final show, which features Mike in conversation with Paschal Tuohy of Bonniconlon and Cill Chomáin’s Fergal Ruddy. The link for that show, which is up on Patreon, is here.

At 7pm tomorrow evening it’s the eagerly awaited North Mayo showdown between Ballina Stephenites and Knockmore for possession of the Moclair Cup. It’s been twenty years since these two great rivals went at each other in a county final and so this battle, under the MacHale Park lights with the generator purring sonorously in the background, is one to savour.

We’ve two podcast episodes up on Patreon in the lead-in to the senior final, with our preview show (here) going online last week before the decision was taken to postpone the game to this weekend while we also had another pod last week (here) in which we heard voices from both camps.

On Sunday, it’s the intriguing Intermediate title decider between Moy Davitts and Crossmolina, two clubs which have already met in this year’s Championship, with Moy Davitts coming out on top on that occasion in what was an explosive high-scoring encounter.

The Sweeney Cup decider gets underway at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park on Sunday at 2.30pm. We’ve also got two podcast shows up on Patreon on this title decider, with the preview pod (here) also taking in the Junior final, while we’ve also got an in-their-own words pod featuring voices from both clubs (here).

If you’re planning on going along to the matches tomorrow or Sunday then your club season pass (included with your season ticket or bought separately) is still valid this weekend. If you need to buy tickets the link for the Saturday matches is here and the one for Sunday is here.

Mayo GAA TV are streaming all three matches live this weekend and the details on that are here. Three lucky podcast club members this week won weekend passes for Mayo GAA TV courtesy of us, which is the second such competition we’ve run for club members in recent weeks. If you fancy joining our ever-expanding club, details on doing so are here.

Away from the football, Tooreen are also in action this weekend. Their defence of their Connacht IHC title gets underway tomorrow at Dr Hyde Park in Roscommon where they face Roscommon champions Four Roads in the provincial quarter-final.

Throw-in at Hyde Park tomorrow is 2pm. The ticket link for the game is here and the match is also being streamed live by Connacht GAA, the link for which is here.

The Mayo Football Podcast is the new home of the Club Stars, with this year’s gala Club Stars event taking place at the Knockranny House Hotel in Westport on Friday 13th December. Stay tuned for details on tickets for this event!

I'm guessing all games go to a replay if level after normal time ?

R

Richie duck says:

Better than the proposed option here in Wicklow. They deferred the senior final till today. (Could have played it last Sunday). Anyway. Game today replay down to be played if needed. Monday afternoon.

W

Willie Joe says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:50 am

That’s correct, Paddyjoe - it’s replays if level at the end of normal time.

R

Robwr says:

Wondering why team sheets are not up today for county finals, when they were up for all other rounds. Supporters paid in too on earlier rounds and had their programmed in advance.

G

Gizmobobs says:

Two best forwards on pitch Orme and Regan. Neither county naturally enough

S

Sean Burke says:

October 26, 2024 at 7:47 pm

Evan Regan well worth a place on the Mayo panel .

C

Clare says:

October 26, 2024 at 7:48 pm

Does Regan want to be involved in county though that's the question. Ballina looking good.

M

Mayonaze says:

October 26, 2024 at 7:53 pm

Ah I think orme is a decent club player but I just don’t see enough from him for too county level maybe a squad player. He got one nice score 1st half but the next ball in he just ran into trouble. The free he missed last minute v Breaffy said a lot.

Knockmore really poor first half. If Ballina had a top county forward they’d be home and hosed. It’s not that they’ve missed much but their forwards aren’t great as a unit. Like, bar Regan, they’ve no one up front who’d go near a top 6 selection from club teams. McStay is ok.

A lovely county final so far but other than OHora and Callinan no real standouts. Sam is good going forward but I’d like him to be more touch right at defending.

Let’s see if Knockmore show up 2nd half…cos they didn’t come out of the dressing room for the 1st!!

S

Sean Burke says:

October 26, 2024 at 7:59 pm

Ballina are a far better team , if knockmore get back into this it will be down to complacency on Ballinas part .

Decent shot at Connacht too , draw is good .

M

Mayonaze says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:07 pm

Game over

G

Gizmobobs says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:08 pm

When Knockmore are down so many players and have lads playing their first game in a year today and are still in final. Your have to worry about standard in county.

M

Mayonaze says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:15 pm

@Gizmo…I was thinking the exact same thing. I watched a lot of club games this summer and while I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the games, the standard hasn’t been super and yeah, Knockmore are a fairly average side. Credit to them for getting to the final. I don’t mean it as a dig at them; they are an admirable club but it if a team of that calibre are getting to the final then like you said, it doesn’t say much for the others. Not great from a Mayo perspective. The only glimmer of light is that a number of teams at senior and intermediate (and junior) have had impressive displays from their younger players so fingers crossed some of these lads continue to improve. But if you’re a Mayo manager/selector there hasn’t been much to impress you.

M

Mayonaze says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:19 pm

And here’s another thing…David Clarke is still the best goalkeeper in the county.

O

Oilean acla says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:23 pm

Ballina way better team. Knockmore very poor.
Poor County final.Worrying from Mayo point of view!
Junior final was also very poor. Justin Healy looks good

T

Tony Freeman says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:25 pm

That game might have been worse than last years 0-6 to 0-4 county final

B

Blond64 says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:26 pm

Who is Ballina playing next

C

Clare says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:27 pm

Well done to Ballina some achievement in fairness not much competition today but always hard to win back to backs.

M

mayomagic says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:28 pm

London champions for Ballina next and then the Sligo champs in the semi final. For neutrals not a very good final too one side at least year the match was in balance through out.

J

JoeG says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:35 pm

Congratulations Ballina well deserved. Some saying it wasn’t a great game but if that’s so it’s not the fault of Ballina because they played really well. Gizmo the fact that an under strength Knockmore says more about the draw than the overall standard. Ballina are no.1 with Breaffy and Westport 2 and 3. Knockmore Castlebar prolly disputing 4 and 5.
Hope Ballina go on and win Connacht at least.

C

Clare says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:38 pm

@JoeG exactly agree.

Ballina can only play what's in front of them actually thought it was a better final then last year at least more scores then last year's.

J

JoeG says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:45 pm

Clare it was like chalk and cheese. Last year was a bore festival that seemed to go on forever while tonight Ballina played lovely football and the game flashed by. Unfortunately no matter what you do, some will always complain and moan. The facts of the matter are that Ballina are a damn fine team and will improve.

M

My Ball says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:46 pm

Congratulations Clare and Ballina !! Well deserved.
Much the better team

M

Mayonaze says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:51 pm

We are really low on imposing, primary possession winning midfielders and that’s the biggest worry from a Mayo perspective. We really don’t have anyone who’d be in the top 10-15 midfielders in the country.

I think Boyler referenced a lack of midfielders on a podcast in recent months and he’s right. Even at underage I can’t remember us having anyone who stood out as a being a future star in this area of the pitch. It’s concerning.

C

Clare says:

October 26, 2024 at 8:53 pm

@JoeG well said! It really was much differnt to last year..

Last year was so flat and depressing.. Hopefully Ballina go further in connacht this year! Wonder could mcstay convince Regan to give it a go at county surely he's worth a try..

@My Ball ah thanks the home club is killala but I always shout for Ballina to delighted for them!

T

The New Departure says:

Knockmore backs shocking all gone up the field for regan goal. They didnt lay a hand on mcstay or regan. High ball into knockmore square the hurler pull on it over the bar , midfield non existent mclouglin didnt touch ball till well into game dempsey never tracked and kick passing awful , take orme out of forwards very disappointing . i was expecting heart and passion and steel in the knockmore performance , ballina must have thought whats going on here , o hora was panting like a dog after his first burst , but was allowed the who of mchale park to roam. I dont think the ref had one hard to call was there any 1 booked , ballina looked fitter , better conditioned , more of a team mentality, imagine never get a softer moclair cup. worrying for mayo football there be no one from knockmore near a mayo team.

G

Green&Red says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:04 pm

Very disappointing final. But full credit to ballina, better team on the day definitely won.

T

Tuamstar says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:09 pm

Delighted for Ballina..
What were knockmore at for the goal...
Honestly Regan is a very good club player, but if Mayo bring him back it spells desperation ..
Clare they will go farther than last year I'd say but probably just to a Connacht final and will be bet there I'd imagine...
Tonight Ballina won't care...
The training on Enniscrone beach paid off....

T

Tuamstar says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:10 pm

Delighted for Ballina..

T

Tuamstar says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:12 pm

Not sure why I'm delighted came up twice !!
But ye get my point...

I'm delighted ?

J

JoeG says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:14 pm

Clare. Tbh if you knew nothing about any of the players on show Evan Regan would obviously be a shoo in and Davie Clarke too. Still the best keeper in the county. Unfortunately I don't think either of them will be back.
Which brings us to O'Hora. The man is a force of nature and gets picked for the county because of his up-and- at-em buccaneers style that lifts everyone around him but then they give him a man marking job at corner back. Unbelievable!

S

Sam og says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:21 pm

On a very poor night for Knockmore I thought Aidan Orme was really good tonight got the better of Sam Callinan.Has to be a phone call made for him from Kevin, has the best left foot in the County. His point in the first half with the chip up and a kick from the tighest of angles was the best score of the night. Also the free from the ground out near the sideline was a beauty too.

G

Gizmobobs says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:22 pm

JoeG how would you have Breaffy at 2 with their record?? A weakened Knockmore beat them again. :)

Ballaghadereen had Akram rounded keeper to slot ball home could have been in the final tonight. So not much between the teams. But nothing to justify having Breaffy as 2!!

C

Clare says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:26 pm

@JoeG yeah agree sadly I think that's right I can't see Regan putting his hand up for county it's such a shame.

I think Ballina look in better shape then last year fingers crossed for a better showing in connacht..

M

Mayonaze says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:28 pm

Ah Sam Og. Really??

M

Mayonaze says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:33 pm

@JoeG…exactly. POH is not right for a role in the full back line at county level not against the top teams. He’s a super team player and leader and definitely worth his place in the Mayo panel, but he’s someone to have in a more attacking role from deep he could play as a sweeper. Like Callinan, he’s better going forward. It’ll be interesting to see where Sam ends up with Mayo next season. He’s not a full back line player imo. Half back line.

After midfield, our next area of concern is the full back line.

J

JoeG says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:38 pm

Mayonaze. That's spot on.

J

JoeG says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:49 pm

Gizmo. Reaffy bossed that game and should have won it but I also have great time for Knockmore. I would still stand over my ratings.

W

Willie Joe says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:54 pm

Final Whistle pod on the Senior final just up on Patreon, the Junior one went up earlier on. Busy night on the pod!

O

Outside of the Boot says:

October 26, 2024 at 9:57 pm

Agreed Mayonaze and in fairness if Mcbrien is fit then he's no3 and Donnacha Mchugh no4 so the vacancy is no2.
Coyne had great start to his career, last year was flatter but he will hopefully be back to top form , Golden from ballina has the physicality and is worth a look, plays or played rugby too and is fast on his feet for such big man.
Halfbackline of Eoghan Mclaughlin, Sam and another be it O Hora or Loftus or anyone else at 7 is a decent spine to the team.

Halforwards and fullforward line bar ROD places all up for grabs

G

Gizmobobs says:

October 26, 2024 at 10:02 pm

JoeG largely true, but footballs a result business and poor Breaffy have to much of a tendancy to go full Mayo. Just find it hard to rate them that highly.

Pitch held up really well after the heavy rain. Hopefully weather holds for tomorrows game.

O

Outside of the Boot says:

October 26, 2024 at 10:04 pm

Stop Orme only came good when game was over , too light too timid and needs too much space . Hopkins showed better than him and Luke Feeney would defo be worth a look before him .
Tomorrow two quality players will go head to head in Conor Reid and James Maheady.
Two quality players and more older fashioned players who take teams on .
Maheady in particular adds the same impetus as ROD in single minded determination and driven to get scores, nice loose player.
Reid on form would do a job for Mayo at 12, probably more mobile than Irwin and more likely to kick scores on the run.

Impressed with Ballinas football nice to watch fast ball and proper defenders like sam o hora and Golden stand their men up and reading of the game

M

My Ball says:

October 26, 2024 at 10:33 pm

Orme certainly didn't put his hand as a top forward on tonight's performance . Very disappointed in him after all the talk .
Frank Irwin and Conor McStay were the 2 standout performers for me .
Most disappointing thing with Knockmore was they were just out fought throughout the entirety of the game .
Knockmore didn't put a hand in anger on Ballina only through frustration in the closing minutes, bit late then .
Much better final than last year , thankfully

O

Ontheditch says:

October 26, 2024 at 10:35 pm

Frustrating game for Orme as he wasn't exactly surrounded by talent, bit of a question over temperament. I thought Sean Regan at 5 looked decent until hamstring injury. McStays distribution was good and he picked off a few nice scores. Callinan and OHora were standouts.
Very poor final, over after 5 minutes, even the body language from knockmore was all wrong....

October 26, 2024 at 10:43 pm

A poor match. Nothing to suggest that Mayo are on the up unfortunately. God, but Mayo GAA needs to move finals away from McHale Park. There's zero atmosphere at the games. The parade at the start was eerily quiet.

C

Cp says:

October 26, 2024 at 10:50 pm

Surprised not mentioned already but the ref blew up over a minute early in the junior final at half time and full time.did the 4th official put up the wrong time on the board or was the timekeeping really poor by the ref.cill chomain management weren’t happy atall at the end and the linesman had to step in.

C

Clare says:

October 26, 2024 at 11:31 pm

@Tuamstar your fairly confident there ha we shall see ..

You must have deeper info then most on here as can't remember the last time Ballina trained on Enniscrone beech in sligo.. Ha.

J

Jr says:

October 26, 2024 at 11:36 pm

@Clare congratulations to Ballina and enjoy the night.
Did not see the match but a lot of people giving out about the quality of the football.
I am an exile in Meath for over 40 years and the quality of club football is desperate.
It was the same in the glory years for Meath.
It is the sum of the parts that's important not the quality of a county final.
Enjoy.

Catcol says:

Jesus, such negativity! While I only watched online, I thought Ballina were terrific; they’ve come on a ton from last year. Their movement all over the field was superb and a lot of their scores were top class. Their work rate and press strangled Knockmore, so it was no surprise they kept The yellow band blues quiet up front too.

Asking for a friend - how has Frank Irwin not got county game time? And Orme? What could one man do when his team was a beaten docket? He did show he has class, and he is another who will be pressing hard for a place. I’m listing, in my head, three sets of full forwards who could plausibly play for the county. And the Intermediate final could throw up more, not to mention the u21 championship.

M

Mayonaze says:

October 27, 2024 at 1:29 am

I’m actually more interested in the intermediate final than senior. Not sure what that says. Have the Mayo Gaa TV but likely gonna take a spin up to Mayo go watch Crossmolina v BMD.

T

to win just once says:

October 27, 2024 at 6:59 am

In fairness Ballina tried to play attacking football, but the game was disappointing as it was over as a contest early on. Veterans Clarke and Regan were very good but another veteran, Kevin Mc who has been an outstanding servant for Mayo was quiet. Darren Mc Hale quiet as well and apart from one fabulous point Aiden Orme didn’t really get going. McStay looked lively at CHF but I thought O Hora was best player on the field. Definitely deserves place on Mayo panel though not necessarily a definite starter as I couldn’t imagine him getting space like that in an intense Co championship match. Ballina have great chance og getting to Connacht final and who knows after that

R

Roco88 says:

October 27, 2024 at 8:42 am

Ballina looked a far slicker outfit this year -v- last year and I sensed at the outset of the championship from Niall Heffernans interviews they had a chip on their shoulder following last seasons commentary on their win.

A lot of talk on Aidan Orme here which is surprising as he’s not the Knockmore forward starting on the Mayo senior team! For what it’s worth on Orme, I don’t think he’s a prolific scorer from play, he’s too dominant on his left foot and doesn’t have burning pace so they are challenges when being marked by county standard defenders . However I think his handling/first touch of the ball is strong, he’s got a good skill level when in possession and is generally an intelligent user of the ball. Last night I thought he kept battling throughout

C

Clare says:

October 27, 2024 at 9:46 am

@JR aw thanks nice to bring joy to the town!

I think they have improved a lot since last year and learnt from the poor showing in connacht they were dissapointed in themselves after last year.

Cora Staunton has really made a great impact to.

Think they have a great chance at connacht now who knows..!
