Team to play Armagh named

Team to play Armagh named

We’ve named our team to play Armagh tomorrow evening in Round 4 of the Allianz National League. Here’s the starting fifteen we’ve named for the game at the Athletics Ground:

Mayo (NFL Division One v Armagh 22/2/2025): Colm Reape (Knockmore), Eoin O’Donoghue (Béal an Mhuirthead), Donnacha McHugh (Castlebar Mitchels), Enda Hession (Garrymore); Stephen Coen (Hollymount/Carramore, captain), David McBrien (Ballaghderreen), Eoghan McLaughlin (Westport); Conor Reid (Moy Davitts), Matthew Ruane (Breaffy); Davitt Neary (Breaffy), Frank Irwin (Ballina Stephenites), Jordan Flynn (Crossmolina Deel Rovers); Aidan O’Shea (Breaffy), Darren McHale (Knockmore), Ryan O’Donoghue (Béal an Mhuirthead).

So it’s two changes from the team that started last time out against Tyrone. Into the team come Aidan O’Shea and Ryan O’Donogue – who were both sprung from the bench to good effect the last day – while out go Paul Towey and Cian McHale.

The best of luck to the lads in tomorrow evening’s game.

Got to be happy with that team , bar Sam at 5 probably as strong ad we can go for .
Full credit to Eoin O.D and Mchugh at fullback, both are aggressive and fast and good in air so ideal.for the roles.
I like keeping Mcbrien at 6 .
Sam or Conor Loftus at 5 and eoin Mac at 7 is as good as we can field.
Midfield is fine but I'd prefer see Jordan play there as he probably will.
Inside line is interesting Darren Mchale on forms a fine player and ROD and AOS were going well last year so ya probably not too far off our best so roll up sleeves and go for it

Just hoping for a better performance tomorrow.
Result would be a bonus.
If we can start playing more positively, the fans will be back with the team and also doc carney and loftus to return would be a nice boost for start of championship

To have a chance of winning in Armagh tomorrow, we will need scores. On the basis of the team chosen, don't know where they will come from. Only Ryan in the full forward line has a proven scoring record. In the half forward line, probably only frank Irwin will get more than one or two scores.hope to see better forward options starting. If not, curtains for us I am afraid.

Stronger looking team than last week.
With new lads and hopefully Paddy Durcan and Tommy Conroy and Diarmuid , and Jack Carney back , we should have a strong panel come championship .
League definitely a learning curve.
Get the ball moving a bit quicker against Armagh would be another step forward

Corick Bridge - I do really hope you're not going to resume that tiresome trolling you got up to last year, which I know proved annoying for many. That's two comments from you in the recent past that I'd classify as such - a third one and you'll leave me with no option but to take action.

As strong a team as we can field at tge moment happy with that.

Good see David McBrien back.

Hoping for a better performance. It will be tough in Armaghs home ground no easy win as someone said above.

Armagh will be fuming over Forkers stupidity to get the red card and want to redeem themselves and also need the points..

But still think we will edge mayo by 2.

A starting 15 published team that might start as selected for once? Up to 11 of that team will likely be starters come knockout championship time.

I would prefer to see mcbrien at full back but in the circumstances it’s a decent enough looking team.hopefully we start to see some structure to our play .bound to be some reaction from Armagh after last weekend

Ya decent team. A few interchangeables with Aiden & Frank,Conor and Jordan and assuming we have Cian ,Fergie and Towey on the bench we could get bang for our book from those lads later on,once Aido has a bit of softening up done

M

Mind the House says:

February 21, 2025 at 7:14 pm

Positives there in that we still have players to add in all lines that could be considered starters:
Paddy and Sam in the back lines
Diarmuid and Jack around midfield and Tommy and possibly Conor Loftus in forward areas.

Hopefully Frank Irwin can back up last weeks performance and nail down a spot. Nothing wrong at all with Towey and Boland off the bench. Both offer good scoring options.

Mayo by 2

A different looking forward line with Aidan, Frank and Jordan playing, assuming they do. With a bit more height hopefully more options for kick passing (assuming we get the turnovers to give the option).

You'd imagine that the player profiles are more similar to what will be their come championship, with Carney being another option with height.

Armagh named team includes nine players that started the All Ireland final then again it's probably a final they wouldn't have won if Aaron McKay,Tiernan Kelly,Aidan Forker,Rian O'Neill etc didn't play then as they won't tomorrow.

Decent enough team. I would be a fan of McBrien at fullback. Glad to see a persistence with some of the new lads. Having said that there is not a huge amount of scoring potential in the team and I don’t see a lot of 2 pointers. Anyway I have been wrong plenty of times in the past and hope springs eternal. So Up Mayo

Any suggestions for a place in Armagh to have grub and watch the rugby before the match?

C

Claremorris Native says:

Pleased to see that full forward line - all 3 are more than capable of winning their own ball If played early & long & with strong quick support from Jordan, Irwin & Neary who can kick scores I think we might have a winning formula,
A concern I have though is the strength of our bench for final 15 minutes - we saw last week the impact Ryan, Aidan & Boland made when introduced. It seems to me that replacements who can really influence the direction of the game will be absolutely key this year.

C

Why won't he play NcBrein at fullback for a few games and see if he is the man for there for years to come, can't understand his playing Hessin in fullback line either. Why not play Flynn at midfield for a few games also. However things are looking better now than after Galway game, a bit of pride seems back in team.

Decent team considering availability. I be really hoping for a good performance from reid. I think he would be a great addition if he could get up to a consistent 7/8 out of 10 level. He seems to have alot of the attributes needed to succeed. Hope we haven't seen the last of cian McHale he deserves another crack also feel boland and towie should have an impact when the game opens up.. Outside of the starting 15 we'd be looking down the line at Durcan, Conroy, carney, Diarmuid, Loftus, touhy, callinan, Coyne and a couple more of the newer players to come in which should make a decent panel if we could get them out of the doctors clinic. I be going for a mayo win tomorrow

Team looks strong enough, but newbies not really being tried. Morahan not there, Neary the only real newbie. If you consider those who are gone: Hennelly, Plunkett, McDonnell, O’Connor, Carr, McStay(?), only two newbies have got game time. Others are on the match-day 26, but wouldn’t have the match experience of those who have gone. This will bite down the line.

Catcol. I presume Morahan got injured when he wasn’t in panel last week.
John vahey/adrian Philips whoever is the no.2 has to get atleast 1full game.if Reape gets injured before a Connacht final or before a prelim qf and the sun goalie has never played county would be a disaster.

Would like cian mchale, ivers, flaherty and Thornton to get a start before end of league.

Looks a decent team on paper, strongest so far. I hope they give it a lash and go for it. A win would do us an awful lot of good and give us momentum, but I'd be happy with a much improved performance. Some people saying we could win Sam-we could, but it's highly unlikely this year. We are still a team in transition, after losing so many stalwarts in recent years and it just takes time-it's the nature of the beast. We will gain some more from underage next year and probably lose a few more at the other end. I would like to echo the comments by @Mayonaze in a previous thread about our obsession with the 2 pointers and it's not only our obsession. I said exactly the same think earlier in the week-that we have become obsessed with this bloody arc and setting up for 2 pointers, with very limited success, while passing up opportunities for points and goal chances.

W

Where the Sun Sets says:

February 22, 2025 at 5:09 am

Cp- agree with you there as regards game time during the league for guys who have been match day 26 and not yet given a chance. With the game being played as it is now, might be a case of horses for courses and unless tried in battlefield conditions we won’t know potential of the newbies. I suppose it’s a balancing act of needing a win versus the need to tryout new players especially in defence. On another note how many games do we need to win to stay up - will two do ? Can’t see us beating Derry or Donegal but Armagh and Kerry I’d be hopeful

Would like to have seen Fenton Kelly get another runout as he was good when picked. Big strong physical and pacy with good all round skills. Also I think Cian McHale should be persisted with. Excellent scorer and left footed free taker which we've been crying out for since Evan Regan stepped aside.

Good team. No problem persisting with Reid but I think he needs to be getting 7/8 out of 10 minimum to nail a longer term place and to me he hasn’t yet.
JoeG, Kelly I felt didn’t play enough of a part in the Dublin game to warrant a gamble today with points at a premium but maybe some game time to prove he can have a prominent part to play in the team. Tuohy had a very good league a few years back and has never met those standards since in either league or championship. No idea why as he’s getting older, very tall, fast enough, cross country stamina not fully utilised (in comparison to E.g. Diarmaid) and can kick left footed scores with ease when on form. You would think those attributes would put him in the mix. Might be belief, aggression or big game intelligence to be worked on rather than S&C or skill. Or could be the nature of the amateur game for some players that time juggling is hard. Any lad trying to break in needs to get himself noticed. Neary yes and Irwin somewhat.
We need AOS in for the throw ins, ideally suited to 1 v 1 and one Armagh midfielder is 6’5” so no guarantees even with him.
One possible weakness today is fast kick passers. I hope they find their kicking boots. McBrien can hit a 20 metre punched pass at pace which is useful too. Still prefer him at FB but useful to see how McHugh fares there.
Of those name checked for return, I wouldn’t think in the circumstances there should be any expectation put on Loftus and Paddy D will be below peak because typical of season 1 return from that injury so I’d say bench default for late introduction/leadership will be the plan. Carney will be an addition although several here unhappy with his style of play last year and Tommy C obviously yes for X factor will take the heat off Ryan. If Cian McHale can step up would be great to have a prolific lefty free taker. Aido will assume that role today or maybe Darren.

K

Km79 says:

February 22, 2025 at 9:55 am

I’m getting slightly more optimistic having seen the team. If we have a stronger bench again then we might nick the two points

S

Shuffly Deck says:

February 22, 2025 at 9:56 am

I wouldn’t say 11 nailed on come championship.
I’d name check Reape, McHugh, McBrien, Flynn and ROD. Aido likely because of 2024 form and new rules and Ruane slightly less safe. May be rotating midfield if Diarmaid recovers quickly and Carney also to return. Think there are better playmaker scorer options at 11 than Mattie or Tommy C although 12 is a possibility.
CB slots are up for grabs, Eoghan Mac still wasteful despite his line break pace so maybe better to play a right footer like Callinan or Hessian on the left.
Coen keeps getting picked for his game reading intelligence as he lacks the pace of others around him. Hasn’t made a case so far though this season so I’d say no guarantees for him yet. Bugler put up a big score for Dubs I think positioned on his wing although was on a wander that day and 1 v 1 marking is not so common nowadays, more a team thing. McBrien, while an April starter needs to fine tune his aggression slightly as concedes a few scorable frees.
