We’ve just named our team to play Kerry tomorrow. Here it is:
Mayo (NFL Division One v Kerry, 1/3/2025): Colm Reape (Knockmore), Jack Coyne (Ballyhaunis), Donnacha McHugh (Castlebar Mitchels), Enda Hession (Garrymore); Stephen Coen (Hollymount/Carramore, captain), David McBrien (Ballaghderreen), Eoghan McLaughlin (Westport); Frank Irwin (Ballina Stephenites), Matthew Ruane (Breaffy); Davitt Neary (Breaffy), Darren McHale (Knockmore), Jordan Flynn (Crossmolina Deel Rovers); Aidan O’Shea (Breaffy), Ryan O’Donoghue (Béal an Mhuirthead), Paul Towey (Charlestown Sarsfields).
So it’s two changes from the side that lined out against Armagh up at the Athletic Grounds last Saturday evening. Into the starting fifteen come Jack Coyne and Aidan O’Shea while out go Eoin O’Donoghue and Conor Reid.
The best of luck to the lads tomorrow.
UPDATE: Kerry have now named their full panel for tomorrow’s game, the details of which are here.

Don't think Reid or O'Donoghue done anything wrong this season to be dropped but probably shows the strength the team is building that guys like that, come championship, should be able to step up when needed either from the start or off the bench. Probably the strongest team we could name, bar Paddy Durcan, so Mayo definitely going for the win.
Please God we don't revert back to the absolute muck we saw every game up to 10 minutes into the 2nd half against Armagh and that management say that and have realised there is only one way to get the best out of the players and that slow passing game is not it!
Don't think I'll get over that first half against Armagh for a long time. Was as low as I've felt watching Mayo in the last 30 years but hopefully it's onwards and upwards from here!

Looks a solid team. Like the idea of Frank Irwin at MF. Jack Coyne needs game time, but so do Vahey, Ivers, Thornton to name but three.

I would have thought Jack Carney would have shown enough to get the midfield spot and a bit surprised if EO'D didn't start this one, but who knows maybe niggles were picked up. So best of luck to the starting team, management and subs.

On another note, what's with the continued lack of squad named? It's a joke at this point.

No Sean O'Shea in the Kerry 26.
Best way to stop Clifford is to have him feeding off scraps and even then it's a tough gig.

Like alot of posters, I have been well impressed with Eoin O Donoghue and would have liked to have his tenacity in the fullback line with Mchugh and Hession, you know your getting aggression speed and dogged determination in all 3 of them.
Coyne definetly had second season syndrome last year, he's good player and showd good depth in squad but EOD barring injury deserved a shot at Clifford and Geaneys.
It's up yo Eoghan Mac but the quality I'd there so hopefully we see best of him
Don't like the look of our midfield , two nice players but two lads better suited to halfforwards, both qualities better going forward than aerial domination or defence.
Kerry aren't exceptional midfield but O conors are strong men and don't think these two have it to deal with them. Flynn and Jack Carney are best to do battle in center of park with Reid added when needed.
Mchale and ROD will alternate full to half as suited but felt this was good game for cian Mchale.
Toweys lucky man to start

Don’t see the point in continuing to complain about the squad not being named.this management don’t do it and are very unlikely to start now .hopefully the improvement we saw in second half last week continues and it wasn’t just a reaction to the position they found themselves in
Bogman says:

Will we play our usual containment tactics in the first half and try to keep possession of the ball for as long as possible? No wind tomorrow so that excuse is gone. Matchups will be interesting for the two Clifford's. Paudie needs man marking as he gets so many possessions and supplies the brother. Hopefully not a repeat of the first half against Tyrone and Armagh.
Have a free ticket for the game if anyone wants it as can't make it tomorrow.

I know it's an obvious prediction but if we hold the cliffonater to a low score we will be in with a great chance but personally I think he means business even though it's still only February judging by his reaction to his goals last week and for that reason I'm not expecting a win but sure we live in hope

Nobody in that fullback line has the physique to neutralise Clifford, so hopefully the mngt team has other plans from the start - Kerry by 6 or 7 unless ....

Kerry will be determined to rap up first division status for next year. Weather forecast looking good. Fast break is best tactic for McHale. We could be in for a tough afternoon but it's the test we need.

Pressure on Jack Coyne to stand out tomorrow , was roasted against Derry last year poor against Galway too.Bad form dropping E'OD.
Smart move would be to move McBrien back on Cliff tomorrow, and put McHugh out to the corner marking Geaney while releasing Hession to half back line to mark Paudie.
GBXI says:
February 28, 2025 at 11:11 pm
Completely agree, Sam og. Coyne must be pulling up trees in training because he was very poor last year and Eoin O'D brings the aggression at corner back that we haven't had since Chris Barret retired. If McBrien is all he is supposed to be, let's see him on Clifford for 70 minutes.
Disagree that Towey is lucky to start, he scores from play and Mayo need to persist with him. Darren McHale and Frank Irwin will be very lucky to start. I'm expecting Carney to start ahead of Irwin come throw-in.

I think it is great to see some changes.
Irwin deserves his place, contributes a point or two.
Needs time to bed in as do all the new lads
Clare says:

@JR good to se some changes for sure it's only league but can Coyne hold off Clifford?? Eoin O D can be physical and stands his ground that's what we need.
Also feel as others have said that Jack Kearney deserves a start.
But sure there's always one or two changes right before throw in..

Without him, Kerry wouldn't have a chance of Sam Maguire.

Once again people complaining about A and B starting and X and Y not starting. We won’t know who is or is not starting until throw in. If management wish to start a player or rest a player then that is surely their choice. Bad enough to be whinging about team and selection throughout first half a La Armagh but now some are starting to do so 15 to 18 hours in advance. A very strong team named by Kerry. The main man will be enormous threat after hitting a hat trick on his return last Sunday. One of the greatest ever players to kick a football. Hopefully our hard pressed defenders can limit his influence tomorrow. Best of luck to our lads.
Nephin says:

None of us believe that is the team, there’s going to be a few changes. It’s good to see different lads named. We don’t want to see any player get complacent. They have to earn the right to wear the jersey. Leaving Jack Carney off , it seems to me they are going for a big second half again.

I feel that we will need to rack up a good score to have any chance as it is difficult to see us restricting Kerry, with David C.,to a lowish score. The best you can hope for with DC is damage limitation and try, as far as possible, to restrict him to 1 pointers, while not forgetting that Kerry have other dangers too. I'd love a win, but I want to see a brave spirited performance, something like the last 25 minutes against Armagh. @Paddyjoejohntom. Thanks for the link to the "enhancements" Jaysus, the rules get more complicated by the day. It's simple rules we need, easy for the players, supporters to follow and the referee to implement.

Kerry need a win. Mayo need a win. so I’ll think it will be helter skelter from word go. Like Frank Irwin outfield, worth a shot. How do we handle Clifford- it’ll take more than one man for sure, especially near the end if things are tight. I’m confident of a good showing from Mayo - just get that feelin.

The usual pre-match debate on the team going on despite the fact that we all know there will be changes. Will we never learn?
Sean Burke says:
March 1, 2025 at 7:57 am
Fair point Joe G but it’s not really us mere mortals who are at fault here . Supporters like to discuss team selection , its part of the following your team package , its a shite enough experience for supporters nowadays the least they could do is name the panel with a bit of honesty too and to counter the argument about “oh sure football teams in the uk don’t announce till an hour before kick off “ it’s apples and oranges ffs , the match day experience is on a different level , totally different culture and set up .
JoeG says:
March 1, 2025 at 8:12 am
Sean, I agree it's reached farcical levels now and hardly worth buying a programme any longer.
Name the damn team and subs and should someone pick up an injury in the meantime so be it. I'm not putting fault on supporters because I'm exactly the same but where as we used to debate the chosen team it's now a case of trying to figure out which changes will occur.

Hoping to see a defensive plan to combat these type of teams who have superstar forwards , I feel this type of opposition gives us a chance to gauge better where we are at , Mchugh is the man to take responsibility for Clifford , I hope he’s given the task . I’m old fashioned and still think it’s effective , if given a job like that , to hell with anything else don’t even bother yourself with anything, just stick to him like your life depends on it , if your speed , tackling , harassing and discipline is up to it no matter who you’re man marking his damage will be limited.
