It was two from four for the Mayo Post-Primary schools in today’s All-Ireland semi-finals, while the county’s hurlers came up short narrowly against Meath. Here’s a quick round-up of the day’s results.
The Hogan Cup semi-final between St Gerald’s and Tralee CBS was a cracking contest. It looked as if St Gerald’s were on their way in the second half but then two goals in rapid succession for Tralee rocked them back. Ultimately it was the concession of goals – four in all – that proved fatal as Tralee won out by 4-11 to 1-15.
There was better news in the Post Primary B semi-final where St Nathy’s got the better of Mount St Michael of Rosscarbery. The Ballaghaderreen school won this one in emphatic fashion on a scoreline of 3-18 to 0-11 and they now progress to the Paddy Drummond Cup final where they’ll meet Cnoc Mhuire of Granard.
Balla Secondary School also have an All-Ireland final to look forward to, as they got through their All-Ireland C semi-final today without difficulty. The Balla lads beat Carrigaline Community School by 3-17 to 1-9 and will now meet St Ciaran’s of Ballygawley in the Dr Eamonn O’Sullivan Cup final.
St Brendan’s of Belmullet, meanwhile, came up agonisingly short in their All-Ireland D semi-final this afternoon. They lost out to Rice College Ennis by a single point on a scoreline of 2-10 to 2-9.
It was a case of what might have been for the Mayo hurlers too. They went in at half-time in Tooreen against Meath thirteen points in arrears in their NHL Division Two meeting but then staged a stirring second half comeback. It was, though, too much of a mountain to climb and they lost at the finish by 0-20 to 1-12.

Good sign that so many Mayo schools are getting to the business end and finals. Good omens hopefully . Look forward to seeing if Balla can win the big one now. Best of luck also to Nathys in the B final.
