A highlight for me from last weekend’s club action – aside, of course, from Aghamore’s stirring win over Ballintubber – was getting to Kiltimagh for the Breaffy/Knockmore game and so see for myself the fruits of the impressive redevelopment works at Gilmartin Park.
Now celebrating its 50th year in existence, Gilmartin Park has, in the past, hosted county matches – I recall being at a league match against Down there back in the early Eighties – and the work that has now been completed at the venue makes it one of the finest club grounds in the county.
This coming Sunday, 13th September, a big day for Kiltimagh GAA. Gilmartin Park’s 50th anniversary is being marked by a Family Day at the venue, which will feature the finals of the underage Mulhern, Charlton and Flannery Cups, while there will also be a barbeque, refreshments and music. The Family Day gets underway at 3.30pm on Sunday.
A big highlight on the day will be the arrival to the club of members of the victorious All-Ireland-winning Mayo team with the Sam Maguire. They’re due to arrive at Gilmartin Park at around 5pm.
Young and old alike are invited to join in the celebrations for what has the makings of a very memorable day in Kiltimagh on Sunday. Further details on the event are in the flyer below.

Looks like a day not to be missed. The great advantage of the earlier all Ireland final is the chance to hold days like this in hopefully decent weather.

RosTown - the book is due to go to print next week so, once it does, I should have a better idea on timing but I'd say there's a good chance pre-order copies will be going out before the month is over.
James - I won't be there on Sunday, sadly.

Some of you probably know this, as it has appeared in some of the local papers, the Sam Maguire cup will be putting in an appearance in Dublin next Friday. It will be at the 9 05 Mass in St Patrick’s Church Corduff in Dublin 15. Jack Carney who is a teacher in the local school will accompany it. A great chance for Mayo people living in Dublin who haven’t been able to make any of the homecomings in mayo to meet up with it.

Looking back over our championship games we were wide open against Roscommon,Monaghan and Meath ,even late on in that game Livingstone made a great save.In between our backline was excellent against Tyrone.
As a unit our backs we brilliant once we hit Croke Park.
Also tactically we were excellent.
We closed down Sherlock and Louths main threats.
Even in Mayo nobody talked about McGreal marking Paudie.
Also putting DoC on Gavin was a master stroke,he played puck last year against Donegal.
What confidence this final win will give this squad.

Good points JR. I still say we had injury problems and game time issues despite the Kerry narrative on this matter. I came across an interview Andy did with TVAM the morning after and he referenced Darragh Beirne not training after the QF; they just let him play the games. Add in Diarmaid’s lack of game time, and McGreal’s come to that, and it puts our final performance in perspective.

Not might be on much people’s radar but after the week that was in it , and as a South Mayo native , Claremorris beating Hollymount in senior ladies is big news . No disrespect to Holly but it’s good news for Mayo Ladies football. In my younger days you had only a handful of clubs , The great Clare Egan from Louisburgh played club football for Carnacon !!
Great to see the “newer” clubs coming through at adult level .
Just a pity the Australia is such a draw for our elite Mayo players, while nobody can argue with their opportunity’s down under, the loss to Mayo is huge but the loss to their clubs is catastrophic

No white feather - Thanks for heads up on that mass. If i'm not mistaken the PP there is too a Kilmeena man, who is much liked by people far and wide, and had his mayo colours all decked out beside his place in Corduff on all-ireland day. Great to see these small Sam visits continuing to travel and brought to those to whom it means much.
