I’m back home after another football-fuelled trip to the west where I caught four matches between yesterday and today. It was a weekend in which the major contenders for championship honours announced themselves, as the final four at Senior, Intermediate and Junior levels were all confirmed.
My first port of call yesterday was Ballaghaderreen, where the home side enjoyed a surprisingly comfortable win over Ballintubber. As Shairoze Akram explained to me afterwards – he’s one of the voices that’ll feature in our In Their Own Words podcast show which will be online tomorrow – Ballagh’ targeted a fast start and, once they got that, they were on the high road to victory.
The road I took next was the one to Ballinrobe and I arrived at Flanagan Park at half-time. Ballinrobe were level with Ardnaree at that stage but they pulled clear effortlessly enough on the resumption and ran out seven-point winners at the finish.
Rob and I then hopped into the car and headed out the road to Garrymore, whose rural pitch was lit up in the darkening South Mayo countryside. The setting for this contest was perfect – justifying, as all the weekend’s matches did, Mayo GAA’s decision to go with home quarter-finals for the group winners.
Sadly, though, we got a non-contest under the lights, with the home side conceding three calamitous first half goals and butchering the same number of clear goalscoring chances themselves at the other end. Despite not playing all that well, Knockmore weren’t at all flattered by their twelve-point margin of victory.
My final port of call was in Foxford early this afternoon for the meeting of Moy Davitts and Hollymount/Carramore. The wind blew strongly and the rain fell for much of the game but what the big crowd got to see was a cracking contest, with the result in doubt right to the finish. The visitors, playing into the wind in the second half, were four clear midway through that half but were undone when Moy Davitts reeled off 1-3 without reply coming down the stretch and then withstood a late Holly/Carra rally to win by two.

Those weren’t, of course, all the matches played this weekend, with the result of the weekend coming in Breaffy where the home side once again outfoxed Westport. I’ve been really impressed with the way Breaffy are going this year – they’ve yet to lose a game under Seán Deane – and they now, yet again, have a real chance to go all the way.
This was meant to be a quick round-up of all the weekend’s results so I’d better get onto that. Here they are:

Watched the weekend coverage on Mayo GAA TV. Pick of the 5 matches shown was surprisingly Davitts V Kilmaine.
Goals win games !

2 players that should be brought in by McStay are David McHale Knockmore and Oisin McLaughlin Westport. How the hell they havnt been in by now looking at our bench.

@Sam Og, I've never understood why David McHale has never been at least checked to be backup panel cover for one of the corner back jerseys? As in he's possibly in our top 13 defenders?
He's built like Eoin Murchain, short but he's strong and he's quick over 10 yards.
He uses the ball really well. He's part of that Knockmore defence that are intelligent in where they position themselves.
I'm not going to name any players but in my there's a few u18 and u19 players that are standing out obvious as senior potential.
We tend to leave them only with u20 and I'd worry at how professional are the resources available to each player at u20!?
I'd be a fan of assessing such young players and they are given some limited exposure to the senior panel. Here's the key, limited exposure, they're too young to be getting the full senior program and all that it mentally entails.

@sam og, there's no way Oisín hasn't been asked into the squad at this stage. He's better than most in the half forward line, he's Westport's best player for years, and the closest in the county to a Kevin McLoughlin type wing forward. He must have said no to McStay.

I am sure mcstay has asked the good players he sees out when scouting like oisin mcgh. Some players just don't want to commit to inter County it's a lot of personal sacrifices they have to do to play for county and some just don't want to do it totally differnt ball game to club action.

I remember Oisín well from the u21 run a few years ago; he was explosive in a team of explosive players. Perhaps he has dipped a little since - he didn’t stand out for me in last year’s QF. Great to see him back in business.

Hard to call a winner after watching the matches the weekend. Ballagh look to have the most complete squad, but struggled to score at times despite the goals. Breaffy look decent defensively but very reliant on Aido up front.
Ballina were a hard watch and could have been caught if Castlebar took their goal chances. Similarly Knockmore were lucky with the goals. Its wide open, hopefully Breaffy can get across the line and pick up their first Moclair.
Overall thought the standard has improved somewhat since last year, some teams playing more direct football, others like Ballina and Castlebar playing a very similar style to the County. Lateral and afraid to shoot.
Weather conditions did not help.

Oisín s game has gone up a notch this season. He has also developed physically. There's no way he would turn down a call up to the senior panel..impact sub definitely

There should be a full car load of McLaughlin's going to Mayo training next year imo.

Its not just David McHales footballing and defending ability its his leadership, I think hes ahead of everyone in the County when it comes down to that in a Roy Keane mould,he took Aido out of the game in the 2020 County Final.Cleaned ROD from play against Belmullet and Trevor Nally the last night. If I was McStay I would bring him in without a doubt the best corner back in the County and has been for the last 5 years ,he gave Enda Hession a lesson in defending in Garrymore Saturday night.

@samog Sounds like the type of player we need.has he been injury prone? Big game next for him.

Best player on view yesterday was Oisin Mcloughlin along with Aido.
Conor Mcstay and Mikie Murray also good performances but don't seem to be able to do it for the County.
Ballina Castlebar game was pure rubbish both sets of players afraid to have a shot.
Westport played lovely football in the first half but the fluke goal killed them.
Breaffy poor first half too dependent on Aido.
Breaffy to win the County if they can learn from previous years, let the goalie take the long range frees and Aido in the square

Oisin and Finbarr McLoughlin both played well. Finbarr got three points from play. He has the burst of speed that you need at intercounty level. Both should be called in.
I think the lack scoring forwards could catch Breaffy again this year - like it has done in previous years.
Like a lot of people would like to see Aidan win a county medal
