Mayo GAA confirmed earlier today (here) that, following the receipt of the referee’s report and a subsequent review undertaken by Mayo CCC, last Sunday’s intermediate quarter-final between Kiltane and Islandeady will be replayed this coming weekend. The replay has been fixed for this Sunday in Parke with a 3pm throw-in.
Kiltane emerged three-point winners after extra-time in last weekend’s match. The contest was, however, mired in controversy as Kiltane had two players sent off on second bookable offences before the end of normal time but they then reverted to fifteen players for extra-time.
This was the rule up to 2024 – on the basis that extra-time constituted a “new game” – but the anomalous situation, which meant a black card (which carried over into extra-time) constituted a bigger punishment than a red card (which didn’t carry over to extra-time). A rule change passed at Congress in 2024 dealt with this anomaly, with teams no longer able to revert to their full playing complement in extra-time after a red card had been issued.
Kiltane should have remained at a two-player disadvantage in extra-time against Islandeady last weekend but, with both teams fielding 15 players, the Erris side emerged from extra-time with a win by 0-27 to 1-21. That result has now been set aside, with Sunday’s replay set to decide which of the two will emerge to meet Davitts in the semi-final.
The saga may not be over, however, as the Mayo News are reporting this evening (here) that Kiltane are considering lodging an appeal against the decision to host Sunday’s replay in Parke. It is understood that the club’s argument, should they decide to proceed with this appeal, would be that they are entitled to home advantage as table-toppers in the group stage.

Kiltane considering lodging an appeal . The mind boggles.
Should make for a spicy re match though. Still fancy Kiltane to be the main challengers to Moy Davitts .
But wouldn’t mind either Davitts or Ballinrobe winning it either ..
It’s such a shame this was caused by an officials mistake.

It’s the only option I suppose but Islandeady will hardly consider it justice.
Sad state of affairs when three refs, as I presume the linesmen were refs either didn’t know the rules or didn’t have the balls to insist the ref on the day was educated on them.
I heard Islandeady were arguing with him about it before the start of extra time but he wouldn’t listen.

The fact that Kiltane have lost home advantage would seem to suggest that Mayo CCC do not consider them completely blameless.

Kiltane should withdraw their counter appeal for the good of the club championship. Get on with it.

‘Galway’ Breheny has followed others like Malachy Clerkin and Brolly in promoting David Clifford for POTY - how low can they go.

Clerkin (for whom I have a bit of time) Breheny ( for whom I have little time) and the other fella whose name I won’t even mention, have no vote on POTY. I don’t think many would quibble with the fact that Clifford is the best footballer in the country and has been for a good number of years so according to those guys he should now be seeking his sixth or seventh award. However the most influential player in this years championship was ROD. Even in our defeat to Ross he played well ( better than Clifford in their games v Donegal ) and he was outstanding in most of Mayos games He could easily have been our MOTM in most of our games. He raised it to a new level in the final after a difficult opening and the work he did throughout the field was inspirational. His 2 two pointers, his manic tacking, his approach play for the game defining goal were amazing. He is without doubt the most deserving winner of the POTY. Regarding Kiltane v Islandeady it’s a real pity what happened and it’s hard to believe that the match officials were unaware of the rules I think a rematch is the only sensible solution

I seen a stat that Ryan had 17 turnovers won this year and Clifford 0.
Ryan scored 2-56 and Clifford scored 7-49.

It's also relevant - a point made by Peter Canavan at half-time on RTÉ - that Mayo targeted Clifford's side for their short kickouts in the first half, at a time when we were really under the pump on the scoreline. This was a clear tactic worked out in advance knowing (a) Clifford was guaranteed not to be first to these restarts and (b) we'd be able to beat any press he lowered himself to engage in, which we did and which helped turned the tide back in our favour. I think they call that hammering the hammer! There's no debate on this: ROD is FOTY all day long and this campaign for Clifford to get it is just baffling.
ThirdManIn says:

RO'D is without doubt the POTY, his contribution to our success was immense. Clifford might be one of the best (possibly best) to have played the game but he wasn't a better overall player than RO'D was this year.
I think he outscored RO'D by 8 points over the course of the Championship. RO'Ds work rate for the team easily made up that difference and much much more. The guy was as likely to be in the FB line as he was the FF line. No contest.

Unfortunate to hear that Kiltane are likely to appeal the neutral venue. All in all, a replay in a neutral venue is probably the right call. Not that I would want to see it but I think Islandeady have more cause to look for themselves to get home advantage.

Let there be no debate, ROD is clearly the player of the year imo, his influence goes way behind scores. His performance in the final was a tour de force, not just in scores but his tackling, turnovers, runs from deep. Motm in the qf,sf and final. He's as decisive a winner as ther has been seen Sean cavanagh in 2008 imo.
Clifford is unquestionably the greatest of all time but ROD is unquestionably player of the year

Every game that can be played now will be played, weather getting worse and the playing surfaces will suffer. Schedule will remain on track..can't see anything coming of kiltane objection re venue. The ccc are responsible for fixtures. Maybe if they objected to the replay decision, they might have a better chance of success.

Ryan for POTY and it's not even close. I'd go as far as to say if Ryan and Clifford had changed sides Kerry could well be champions. Without the full press up front Kerry backs would have played out much easier while Ryan would have ensured our own full back line would have been under pressure.
Ryan brings so much more than his brilliant scoring stats. He really is the spiritual leader for teammates and fans alike and always leads by example. I wouldn't swap Ryan O'Donoghue for any player in the country.

Breheny, Clerkin and Brolly know well what they are at. Sadly it appears that the greatest treasure in their line of business is something that is controversial, something that will divide the masses, and not something that is likely their honest and true opinion, which we are unlikely to ever know. The Clapham Omnibus balanced view doesn't sell papers

What do ye think about the current rule of the 3 back Breach being punished by a free, for 1 or 2 points. I think it is an overly harsh punishment for what is a technical foul, most commonly committed by mistake. A potential 4 point swing is more than enough to decide a game with how tight margins are in the white heat of championship. Surely a Free from half way, (where the foul is actually committed!) is surely punishment enough.
Would be interested to know your thoughts. Too many championship games are unfortunately decided on this. I understand it is the responsibility of the players to not stray over the line, but as we have seen it does happen to even the best of defenders.

Often the POTY is decided in the final, it could be argued that Ryan O Donoghue played the game of his career, perhaps one of the greatest displays if not the greatest by a Mayoman in an All-Ireland final. I would definately think he should be player of the year, in fact if Clifford wins its a travesty.
ThirdManIn says:
September 30, 2026 at 5:40 pm
@Fulton, I agree with your overall sentiment that it's a very harsh penalty but there's a scenario where reducing the punishment to eliminate a 2 pointer, or even a one pointer, could bring a game into a farce.
If a team is down by a few points very late on in a game and defending a lead, then their forwards could play absolute puck by deliberately breaching as the trailing/attacking team are trying to create scoring chances.
I think it works well enough as it is, the onus shouldn't just be on the players solely. A good sideline will have someone monitoring it as well. I don't think I've seen a breach in the 5 senior games I've attended this year.

@Fulton: "Surely a Free from half way, (where the foul is actually committed!) is surely punishment enough."
All kinds of scenarios open up there where you'd be more than happy to give away constant advantage & a return to a free on halfway in order to have your 15 behind the ball to prevent a goal/easier 2 as the clock ticks down.
Game design can't ever allow a situation where you're rewarded for breaching a rule or the design has failed. So while it's a 'harsh' deterrent it pretty much needs to be to make sure that technical foul is one teams never want to risk breaching.
The upsides of the 3 up providing so much space and opening up so many exciting 1v1s it's well worth the small frustrations and costs of these relatively rare breaches. As the coaching around it improves it should continue to get even rarer too (already noticeable that it mostly only pops up at the very high stress moments where lads lose the head a little and the instinct to get back is overwhelming the relatively new coaching on avoiding breaches).
Fulton says:

Tsu doh and third man, yes i agree, obviously you cant have an incentive to break the rules, and the upside of the 3v3 is huge, i still think it is a shame to have drawn a line on a pitch which seems to somewhat artificially hampers the free flow of a game,
See first point in AIF where Kobe had to stop tracking his man for fear of breach, and dylan casey got in for a handy score
Still early days yet, and its not somethinf that will be changed in the short term obviously!

David Clifford is a great player, no doubt about it. But for me Paudie was Kerry’s MOTM in the final, and in the semifinal too. Ryan’s final performance was off the charts, and his semifinal wasn’t far behind. David Clifford just doesn’t get involved in pressing, defending and so on.
Mention of David reminds me of the semi final a few years ago in which Kerry beat Derry, only just. They pulled it out in the last ten minutes, and again David wasn’t to the fore until the tide had turned.
As I was walking along Clonliffe road I met a Kerry woman who told me she was in her late eighties, supporter all her life, etc, etc. We shot the breeze for a few minutes, and then she asked me: ‘what did you think of Clifford’? I said not much, did nothing when Kerry were in real trouble and so on. She stopped walking and faced me: ‘you know fuck all about football. Is it any wonder Mayo haven’t won anything for years; Ye’ll never win any thing’. We went our separate ways after that.

@Catcol, 1-6 from play in a final is a little bit more than "not much" in fairness. Granted he may not have had his best game, and I'm still surprised he seemed a bit shot shy in the second half, but still, I can kind of see where she was coming from, 1-6 on an off day...
2023 semi vs Derry he scored 0-9 and got man of the match for it. Maybe your expectations are a little too high of him.
I would take him in a heartbeat and wouldn't care less if he never made a turnover. I'm not saying working hard isn't important, and RO'D is a freak when it comes to his work rate and scoring.
For years I think we did suffer from wanting, expecting, converting young forwards into more defensive or workmanlike players. While the forwards all worked hard this year, Andy installed the confidence and belief to be forwards. That alone was the biggest factor this year I feel.
Half joking but I wonder how we would have developed a young David Clifford up here... I don't think I would be surprised if we turned him into a midfielder with his strength and size.

If we'd had David Clifford in the 2010s, we'd have won at least three All-Irelands.
ROD is the player of the year, no doubt. But a forward's primary job is to score. Nobody scores more, and does so more consistently, than Clifford. The man is peerless.

Just shows what level David Clifford is at when he scores 1-6 from play in a final and some say he didn't play well!!
Imagine if we had a forward that scored 1-6 from play in all those finals we lost - we'd have another 4-5 all Irelands.
No doubt he is up there with the best the ever played the game

David Clifford is an exceptional player, not perfect but who is. It is no shock that Fossa will be playing senior club football next year having come from junior a few years ago.
I think that POTY goes to the player who has the biggest impact on the championship. On the basis that ROD was our MOM in a few games, including the final means that he should win POTY, it does not mean that he necessarily a better player than DC but had a huge role in how the championship played out in 2026.
