Questions sought for MFT club members’ Q&A show

Is there anything to be said for another podcast show?

That’s the question we’ve put to our MFT club members, whose questions we’re looking for now for a Q&A show we’re planning to record next week.

Club members have been asked to provide us with their questions either on Patreon or on the dedicated Discord chat we’ve opened for this purpose. We’ll use the best questions on the pod and we’ll frame the discussion on the show around the main topics raised.

I’ll be joined by Edwin McGreal to co-host the Q&A show and we’ll have two special guests with us as well. Monday is the deadline for submitting questions and we’ll be recording the show on Tuesday.

Getting involved in our Q&A podcast shows is one of the benefits enjoyed by our MFT Patreon club members. Becoming a club member costs just €5 per month (plus VAT) or a single annual payment of €52 (plus VAT), for which you also get all of our premium audio and written content. Join the club HERE.

My question is about us, the fans. I can't attend games as I live on the other side of the globe, but I've watched every game available at ridiculous hours of the morning since about 2020. Hear loads on podcasts about the fanatical Mayo support but I'm not seeing it in the terraces. I think we were that up to about 2017 but have dwindled since. We are well supported but nowhere near the levels of yesteryear. Understand the stand ticket fiasco, but looking at some replays covering the opposite side it looked and sounded like the Rossies had more support. I'm a firm believer in the 16th man, not sure he's there for Mayo anymore. Thought he would be after the first league under McStay(that was fantastic attacking football) and again with Andy's enthusiasm, but from my viewpoint I can't see that its materialised. Long question short, how do we get our fans back on the stands?

My question:
Do people think it is mad that the draw for the first round is to be made on Monday a week and indeed 2 weeks before the provincial finals?

Good question Jr but from what I’ve read it won’t be like, Connacht winner v X and looser v Y. It’s going to Galway and Roscommon in the draw so the result be irrelevant to who they play.

Alot of the support has dwindled since the 2021 final and in alot of cases won’t be back .very like Galway supporters after the 1983 final and the manner of the way we played that day it was just one major disappointment too many .Of course the tickets prices and all round expense for a family going to a game now also plays into it and last Sunday won’t have done much to encourage supporters back

1985 - nail on head there. The shocking no show in that 2021 final was the final nail for a lot of Mayo fans.

It’s 30 years this September since those games v Meath and Mayo have been in 10 All Ireland finals (not including replays) in those 30 years. Mayo have been in 1/3 of all football finals in that time period. It’s an insane stat when you consider we have failed to win a single one.

I think a lot of fatigue and frustration has built up among supporters in that time.

15k attended the Mayo Dublin game in early Febuary. It was the price rise from Prenty that gave the fingers to about 4 to 5 thousand Mayo supporters and that led to the flat and subdued atmosphere in McHale Park Sunday.

The 2021 defeat was the sorest for sure and an attitude that anyone can beat us in a final prevailed afterwards.
Mayo hype gathers momentum quickly, we set ourselves up to be ass kicked. No wonder Brolly enjoys us so much.
Such a pity the league doesn't supplement the championship at this time. Experimentation is almost over for another year.

Our willingness to tackle and indeed our ability to tackle against Roscommon, was the poorest I have witnessed from a Mayo team for a long time. I would expect that a team undef Paddy Tally and Colm Boyle would be better prepared than this. I would like to ask the panel, what factors, in their view contributed to such a poor display not only in defence, but in controlled aggression levels all over the field?

Fans disappearing:
Disrespect for season ticket holders as the years went on. Mr P told us to stop moaning back in the day in Hyde.

2021 seniors - 2022 U17s. Both finals there to be won. Both teams held all the aces. Neither team got off the bus as "it was won"

Costs - We got into the end lines of a lot of years. The change if format increased the travel and ticket costs, the squeezed season, time constraints.

Same ould same old - We have had many many many false dawns. For a decade we have had issues in GK. We have had no fullback for 5-10 years. No left footed free-taker. Our best forwards in the club scene can't convert to county or are ignored. Management making the same poor decisions when the pressure is on.

TV coverage - With the GAA apps, TV, radio, then fans find it easier to watch it on TV. Pearse stadium is a nightmare no one wants. Croker you can't get a hotel over night.

Question for the show:
Do all the managers in the teams from 15's to senior hold the GAA level 2 coaching certs?
Do they have any of the S&C, running, defensive courses?
Might be a hard answer, but worth asking as its been asked on a few different posts.

Obviously the cost of tickets, fuel etc. will have an impact on attendance, but the biggest impact of all is the performance/non-performance of the Mayo. And Sundays abysmal submissive effort will certainly not do anything to attract the crowds back. Who wants to waste money and time watching that tripe. Play with pride, passion and commitment, give us something to get behind, and the crowds will be back. The almosphere was quite good in McHale last Sunday early on, but completely deflated as Mayo folded.

I and my family are Season Ticket holders since they were first launched. For the game last Sunday we had to buy our tickets before Wednesday and all that was on offer was either end of the stand. Then on Friday the middle of the Stand was put on Sale. I am finished with Season Tickets after this treatment

That is disgraceful. And the early bird non season ticket holders were caught in the same trap. While the more lukewarm supporters who waited till the Friday were the winners. You couldn't make this up

Probably mentioned before by others but here's my question - is the current state of the county team not just a reflection of the standard of senior club football in Mayo the last few years? Do we as fans (myself included) have unrealistic expectations given the fact a Mayo club hasn't doing anything significant in the Connacht senior club championship recently. It must be nearly 10 years since a Mayo club won it.

No disrespect to Ballina and they probably been the best team in Mayo the last 3 years but how St Brigids blew them away with power and athleticism last year was eerily similar to what happened against Roscommon last Sunday. So to was what Strokestown did to Kilmeena.

While we do have some good footballers and promising young talent coming through, is it a case that until the level of the normal senior club footballer in Mayo is raised, leading to a more competitive senior championship and being competitive at provincial level, we can't expect to be serious contenders at intercounty level.

?
Is where we are now at all grades down to the fact that we invested any money we had in that Ff ing stand and the running cost of a senior panel that were pushing for titles for the guts of 10 years.
See where Dublin are now same place with different circumstances perhaps but the senior team got a lot of attention was other parts of the overall project not giving it's due diligence. Kilkenny hurling the same.
