Lots of contradictory analysis flying around. New blood needed, get rid of dead wood, different type of players needed for the new game, hey, don’t let anyone walk away, bring Cillian back. At this rate a panel of sixty will be needed.
Some of the newbies on whom we pin hopes may not work out. Oldies, what to do with them, only twenty six can tog, and we may find that other players will get the Frank Irwin treatment, good league, but no championship game time.
How long will we give the management if results don’t go well? A year if that; division two will not be acceptable.
What Andy will bring is a young, hungry, enthusiastic, and risk-taking approach, with added motivation skills. Ditto Boyler. Paddy Tally didn’t have a good year under the new rules, but I think he will be good for us. He’s probably not a number one, but good at doing a specific coaching job. People say it’s really a top attacking coach we need, but look at the way Kerry took Armagh, Tyrone, and Donegal apart. The new rules can leave a team getting slaughtered, so defensive structures will be different, but necessary.

He will bring a lot of positivity and encouragement to young lads breaking through (along with improving our forward play) while Boyle and Tally will hopefully bring the steel back into Mayo and our defence. He is a huge positive force and knows how to play forward play the right way.I’m excited to see us play direct football. Our forwards will certainly be better with his guidance. With Boyler and Tally we should defensively sound too and importantly ,defensively counter attacking. I am delighted with this and the manner it has been executed has been exemplary. Kudos to the county board!
If we give him 5 years I am confident we will get it done. I am confident if we ever get to an All Ireland Final under his guidance then at least we won’t be afraid to win it.

Waiting for Sam and Green & Red me three, but James Horan didn't have any intercounty experience at all, and look what he achieved. I hope there will be a similar focus on standards now, and I'm sure there will be.
If there were ever two man you'd want to see succeeding, Andy and Boyler are those men. Wouldn't we all run through walls for them?
If nothing else, they'll surely re-inject some of the enthusiasm amd confidence that had visibly drained put of the panel under the last regime. But that's the bare minimum we can expect - I have a feeling this could be a really good call.
Mad that both are still playing for their clubs! They'll know the club scene inside out, so the fact that it's taken a little longer to make the appointment than expected won't be an issue. And it was a smooth process by all accounts with no drama in the media (touch wood) so well done to the MAC and executive.
Very best of luck to all three of them. Exciting times.

I’ve no inside knowledge. This is just how it looks to me from the outside. But I’d say most people’s initial instinct was Andy would make a good manager down the line, but might be better taking over the U-20s for now to get a bit of experience under his belt. Then something happened. Former teammates came out of the woodwork praising him in the media. He togged out and scored a few points for his club. A few commentators seemingly independently of each other all became convinced that Tony McEntee havijg young family meant he wouldn’t be able to devote the necessary time to managing Mayo. The Irish Mirror ran a puff piece on Andy the family man. As I said, I have no inside knowledge here. McEntee may genuinely have family commitments that make him unsuitable. That Mirror piece may have been based on old quotes for all I know. But the impression I got was that Andy is a competitive guy, he knew the local levers to pull, he campaigned his arse off for the job and got it, possibly against the country boards better judgement.
That doesn’t meant he’s not the best man for the job. I hope the he’ll he is. Maybe the same competitive instincts will serve him well. Best of luck Andy and come on Mayo!!!

Food4Thought - I hope you're right but have to say, I'm surprised by the confidence. Moran and Boyle contested several finals as players and didn't win one despite having a few of them in their hands, and a great deal of that failure was almost certainly at least partially down to a fear of winning incidentally.

Andy is a clever man who knows his football. He is a man who can bring people along with him. A positivity that knows no bounds. I am excited to have a man who is passionate about Mayo football. There is no hangover of previous management in appointing Colm Boyle and Paddy Tally to the backroom. Fresh perspective, fresh ideas, fresh tactics. I wish the management team well in their endeavours in bringing Sam to Mayo.

For years I felt Andy would manage Mayo. I do understand those who think it’s a couple of years too soon. I felt that a bit too but he’s in and I’m enthusiastic. The way I see it is we May need to allow him time. For instance, we need to be ok about relegation in league provided we see genuine testing of new players and systems. We didn’t get it at all under the old mgnt. So, I say give Andy time. Obviously we all crave instant success but I genuinely think Mayo need to be patient with this new management..
Back them.

While I hugely admire and respect Andy as the former player and his overall positive attitude towards football and life, I'm not at this moment in time overly enthused with this. I really hope I'm wrong. Paddy tally is the coach who had a large hand in Galway playing absolutely sh1te football, let's not forget that. Why didn't Jack O'connor hold onto him? And why could he only last 1 season in Derry? I've huge respect too for Boyler too. I just wonder, are the county board going for the cheapest option here??

The only final that Moran and Boyle played that was in mayo’s hands going down the stretch was 2017 when we led by two points with about 5 minutes to go but both players were off the field at that stage.so does that disqualify all mayo players from that era from ever managing the county team.Jesus at least mcstay and rochrord got a couple of years before they were written off

Congratulations to Andy. I think it’s a great appointment. When it comes to managers in team sports I would much rather someone that’s in the process of making their reputation, which Andy hopefully will be as a manager over the next few years, as opposed to someone that already has a reputation, such as the previous management regime.
The energy, the freshness, the enthusiasm will be going up several notches in this squad once Andy takes over. Boyler is a perfect sidekick too. You feel there is a drive and sense of urgency about Colm Boyle that I’m not sure the previous coaching regime had. These guys will be leaving no stone unturned to get Mayo back to the very top level.
Roco88 says:
August 11, 2025 at 11:15 pm
Hopefully Colm Boyle will continue to be on the podcast next year?! Would be great to have that inside perspective week to week! No more dummy teams or silence from the camp
In an ideal world you’d be appointing a more successful, experienced manger but there doesn’t seem to be a long list of those candidates either. Instead what you have got are some of the brightest minds in Mayo GAA in with Moran in particular, he had that big game mentality that will gain respect immediately
Another thing is can we stop harping back to past players in the hope they will come back into the panel. Remember next season some of these lads are well on the way to or past 30 - Plunkett (31), OHora (33), Cillian (34). It’s time to develop some of the younger players who will have higher ceilings
Finally @Tuamsrar the criticism of the Galway shawl around 2018 wasn’t just confined to this blog. From living in Galway I can recall people I knew were bored by the football on show back then.

Agree love listening to Boyler on the podcast I know obviously he'll be so busy next year but he's so full of knowledge and a great listen.
I don't get the argument that they were part of a team who contested so many finals but failed to get passed them so they won't get us there one day at all . They were part of a generation team who brought us so close against a 6 in a row team that no other county got as close we did .
It is a rebuild job but they will bring the enthusiasm, confidence and attacking play back into the guys that's missing the last few years .
Also Colm Boyle will be great with the under 20s who will be coming up and he's proved that he is good with the young ones .

Best of luck to Andy, Boyle and Patrick Tally. I really hope it works out for them. Andy and Colm were 2 outstanding Mayo players who always gave so much on the field. While I had/ possibly still have my doubts about Paddy Tally, fair play to him for coming on board. At least it appears that he does not possess an ego moving from a managerial role into that of an assistant. While he was quite negative when with Galway, the new rules don’t allow for such negative techniques and I am sure ,clever man that he is ,he will be imaginative with his tactics. It is easy to be critical of Derry this year but the rot set in before Paddy arrived. Anyway while management will no doubt play an important role ,our success or otherwise will largely be down to the players and how they perform. Anyway the very best of luck to the new set up and new management is always exciting for the supporters

As for player manager point , I’d throw boyler in against Galway even if he was an OAP ( that’s just banter )
I think we should feel positive tonight and looking forward. It’s time to move on from the doom and gloom that’s hung over mayo football since 21 . I don’t mind realism but the constant need for negativity is just not productive imho , it spoils the mood in the county as a whole . If we are to take one trait from our new leader it should be his infectious positivity .

Paddy tally was coach when Tyrone won the all Ireland in 2003, down when they got to the final in 2010, and was Kerry coach when they won in 2022. He also won a sigerson as manager. I think we’ve seen since that the galway shawl is more of a Kevin Walsh construct than paddy tally.
Pretty good cv in fairness
Stephenite says:
August 12, 2025 at 12:55 am
Tally was with Galway for one season, 2018, and they were the best team in Ireland that year outside of the unbeatable dubs. They beat Kerry handily in Croke Park
Tallys been proven as a top class coach in a host of places now. He was credited with Kerry's miserly defensive system in 2022
He's a great addition and should provide some welcome know-how to the two more novice coaches

Read the tea leaves when Boyler showed up at the Balla Knockmore game doing some homework homework before it was even announced. If it was just Andy maybe I’d be taking some peoples concerns on but with Boyler and Tally it’s a strong team. Two winners, lads who never feared the opposition and an experienced coach. I know with Boyler it won’t be too many cooks as he’ll always put the cause first. Don’t know so much about Tally but the others likely know his reputation well enough to bring him in. Great that they’re in time for most of the club championship. Best of luck and yes focus on youth rather than bringing too many oldies back, yes if they make a statement in upcoming club games, no otherwise.

Congrats to Andy & backroom team.
Andy & Boyler..giants of men & I would hope the players feel that about them too.
Having Paddy Tally on board is a good move - someone involved in an All Ireland winning side in the last few years I might add. The Galway shawl was awful to watch, but was effective with the players they had. Kerry brought him in 2022 & won Sam. He's won a Sigerson. Derry played very attacking this year. That demonstrates his versatility.
Will be interesting to see the make up of the rest of the ticket.
Maybe they will bring Sam home..maybe they won't.. but I can't think of anyone more fitting to do it.
As Sean alluded to above too, this is going to have a positive effect on the crowds..

Delighted with the new management and can't wait to see progression in the next few years. It won't be an overnight success but if Andy, Colm and co bring back the enthusiasm and belief it'll be a great starting point.
They'll be getting advice thrown at them from all sides including this blog which is natural but I hope they plot their own path and stick to it.
Funny how Andy was no sooner in the job than some of the knockers came for him..........sad really.
As others have said it's a pity we won't have Boyler's input on the pod going forward but I'm sure John, Mike, Rob and the gang can get him on for regular post match interviews.

I hope I'm wrong but I don't believe this is the right thing for Mayo GAA. Not enough experience and the only management time spent with Leitrim, no offence. First manager to lose to New York. Don't know who else was interested given the circumstances. If we are relying on previous players to return in order to progress we'd be better off with a member of the Taliban taking over.

London took Mayo to extra time in Horan’s first championship game in charge Skorzy and Mayo had a better panel than the Leitrim side which lost to NY (on penalties). I’d say Andy learned an awful lot at both Leitrim and Monaghan and developed and he’s not the same coach/manager as he was for that defeat

Best of luck to Andy and the new management team. Andy’s infectious positivity is something that this young squad should really benefit from. I’m also enthused by what he can add to the setup where it needs serious attention, up top. I used to love watching him off the ball. His movement was so clever, his runs perfectly timed and most importantly, he learned how to grow and evolve and get better, in spite of his limitations - not the biggest, the fastest or most skilful. I also think that the previous mgmt team, despite their perceived underachievement, have built a good foundation that any incoming ticket was going to benefit from. First job is to retake Connacht and put Galway back in their box - do that year one and we can build from there…..

Whilst I wouldn't have been upset with McEntee, I am delighted to see Andy get the top job.
Andy is the reason I read every comment on this blog, subscribe to the Mayo GAA pod and multiple others. Until Covid, I never cared for football(so wasn't burned by the near misses) but then I happened to listen to the football pod. Listening to Andy's passion for the game at that time pulled me in and ignited a passion for me to watch as much of it as I can and learn the game. So I've been fully on the Mayo GAA train for only 5 years, taking in as many opinions as possible, from what I hear Colm Boyle is one of the sharpest minds around.
So I am super excited, just hope we can all take a breath, give the guys a chance and just enjoy the ride

I wish them all the best, I was in favour of McEntee but I hope they work out, I’ll reserve judgement for now. Talk of them bringing enthusiasm back will work for some, but there are plenty in Mayo and beyond who it simply won’t wash with, and that’s not anything to do with Moran, Boyle and co. To get people back onboard is in their hands, plenty talent in Mayo to compete with any team.
Hopefully they bring a faster attacking style of play, with plenty new faces.

Good luck, Andy, Colm, Paddy Tally and Mayo.
It’s going to be so new! And that’s good for all of us. It’s youth, directness and fiery energy I’m picturing. A bit like a new plucky boat heading out on a tempestuous sea. How will it fare? Does it know what it’s doing?
It’s got courage and drive. And we’ve been missing the expression of that energy. We need it. And even if we make lots of mistakes and missteps, maybe we can reclaim our souls in a risky endeavour.
That’s the way I’m reading the tea leaves just now.
Good luck to us all as we set sail on this new venture.

didn't see this coming, but love Andy, such an inspirational player. Had alot of bad luck in chasing all ireland glory, the 2012 All-ireland quarter against Down, lost Andy our Captain to injury. Can still picture him tracking a Down Player along side line and game won, and went down with knee injury, and you could pick up on side line mikes, Andy screening in pain. Always wondered if we had Andy, our leader, quarter back, would we have beaten Donegal in that years final. So will need luck, as every manager needs. But such a gentleman, no one would deserve it more

The very best of luck to Andy Moran and his back room team. Im sure Andy can transform the Forward line both in personnel and playing attacking direct football. Colm Boyle is a great man for the defence and im sure Paddy Tally will bring his own blend of experiences to help both Andy and Colm.
We need Ciilian and James Carr back in the Team. Everyone knows its here where we have the most problems putting the ball over the bar. Cillian is made for the new rules as is James Carr. Its a shame we did not have their talents available this season. A forward line of Cillian, James Carr, Diarmuid O Connor, Ryan O Donoghue, Fergal Boland and Liam Irwin surly thats a major threat going forward. Aido to Midfield for next season.
So come on Andy, get these lads back and Go for it next Year. We can do it. Mhuigheo Abu.

I said on here a few months ago that Moran should get the job and rebuild and that's what County board have gone for. It may take him 5 years but that's what is needed. Unpopular opinion but I think Cillians legs are gone and there is no point in bringing him back to risk getting a bad injury. Andy Moran needs to focus on youth and target an All Ireland final appearance in 3-5 years. Kerry looked very strong in the final, the Dubs will be back with Brennan in charge, the rest will need savage work and enormous luck to win an All Ireland.
The Heather is Rising. says:

@ Chesneychet. I’m thinking about giving it one big shot next year before Cillian and Aido call it a day. We were not Far Off this year. Should have taken Galway and Donegal in Chamionship. Beat Tyrone . No Cillian, No Carr, No Diarmuid, Fergal Boland and Irwin badly treated . So I’m saying Go for it next Season. Why Not? I believe we can do it.

As I said, I hope I'm wrong. Losing by penalties is the same as Losing by ten points. You don't progress to the next round. Ask Armagh. I hope it works out for Moran but going on record/experience wouldn't give me much confidence. Horans debut did require extra time, a late equaliser fron O Connor I think, in normal time to avoid defeat. However we're all aware that that became a trend of leaving it late in games to either start playing well or adapt to the opposition changes and look where it got us. Horan had better experience and had just won the Moclair Cup. Best of luck to all involved. I'll be on sidelines come spring whoever was going to be appointed. Having an opinion is as important as being able to listen.

Ah Heather is Rising, I think ye were well off it this year, Donegal were destroyed in the final, Tyrone destroyed in semi final and we lost to Meath. I would see Kerry, Dublin as the contenders next year. I think Donegal are sunk after that final, the confidence behind McGuinness is now gone. Tyrone have players coming but it's a few years off if even it does click for them. There are scraps to be played for off the Kerry Dublin table but in fairness they are only scraps. I think if Andy Moran could win Connacht and get to a QF then 2026 will have been a very successful year.

Get far too bogged down on “ it’s a rebuild “ , dubs will need no rebuild whatsoever , con o Callaghan with 3-6 the weekend I believe , dubs will be contenders for sure imo anyway . Talk in kerry of Cillian Burke on his way home from Oz , the wining of Sam this year means Kerry won’t have a single doubt about themselves , it was a massive Sam Maguire for that team , the fear teams now have of Kerry is off the charts, 3 months ago there were experts saying they wouldn’t be within an asses roar of an all Ireland (Ulster teams would batter them ) , now look at the narrative about the place .
My concern is Mayo and that should be all we are concerned about , write our own fucking narrative .
Andy didn’t win an all Ireland as a player but every year he togged for mayo he believed he would win the all Ireland .

I think a Tally coached defence will be stable - very important in the new game.
Critical question now is: what about new ball and breaking ball winners around midfield?
Did attendees at the weekend’s games see anyone who could possibly step up here - and don’t exclude Jason Gibbons.

It will be very interesting to see if Andy builds out his management team further. One coach and one selector you would feel is a bit on the thin side. You’d like to think one or at most 2 more men would come into which would take a mgmt to to either 4 or 5, 4 being the ideal number.

Clare so a team getting to the semi final are not contenders and did you not state numerous times this year that Sam was definitely going north this year.Kerry have just won the all Ireland but haven’t gone back to back since 06/07 as it’s very difficult to do .next year is a completely clean slate where everyone starts at the bottom of the mountain again.Dublin may not have the players of the previous decade but their playing population alone make them impossible to rule out .con o Callaghan is an elite forward probably only second to David Clifford at the moment.Anyway best of luck to Andy and boyler .why not give them their chance now .who knows what would have happened had Kevin mcstay got his chance earlier.it’s a young man’s game now and I can’t think of two more passionate mayo men to lead the charge

Congratulations to Andy Moran and his management team. It was a clean appoint not like some recent ones so that's a good start. How well he will do, the jury is very much still out for me but hopefully he will bring a stronger focus which seemed to be lacking at times this year. When Kevin was appointed I was pretty sure how it would end but with Andy I don't know. He has little in management CV but what potential he has, we are about to find out...
I don't think we have the players at the moment and more worryingly the structure to create them...But for now the terrible despair of this year in Mayo football has lifted at least....
