While this is a rare post that doesn’t relate to football within the county, its subject matter does have a blog and podcast connection which I’ll get to anon.
The other day I was lucky enough to be invited to a pre-screening at the wonderful Stella Cinema in Rathmines of the RTÉ documentary film Natasha. A Reflektor Media production directed by Kathleen Harris, the film recounts the story of Natasha O’Brien, the Limerick woman who suffered a serious physical assault at the hands of a serving member of the Irish Defence Force.
When the perpetrator was initially handed a suspended sentence for the assault, Natasha came to prominence and sparked a national outcry, both about the undue leniency of the sentence and, more generally, about the prevalence of gender-based violence in Ireland today.
It’s that shocking incident in May 2022 which provides the point of departure for a powerful documentary film about the impact of violence, the shortcomings of the criminal justice system and the long and often lonely struggle for recovery felt by victims and those most close to them. Ultimately, it’s also a film about the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
It was a great privilege to meet and chat with Natasha, her wonderful mother Anne and many of those involved in the film after the screening at the Stella last Wednesday. Natasha’s story and, in particular, the way her indomitable spirit shone through in her darkest moments, will remain long in the memory.
And that blog and podcast connection? Stephen McCormack’s Reflektor Media made the film and, as well as being a good mate of mine for years, Steve has more recently become a wise and trusted adviser to us on the podcast on a whole range of issues. A man of many talents, as we’ve all known for some time but which this unmissable documentary film confirms.
The documentary film Natasha will be screened on RTÉ One on Wednesday 25th June at 9.35pm and will be available on the RTÉ Player from that date.

Natasha has paved an incredible path for Irish women and continues to do so, even in the face of extreme misogyny online (being outspoken as a woman is still very much frowned upon).
I'm really looking forward to watching this and I am convinced it will be a huge eye-opener for the public to realise just how difficult it is for victims of gender-based violence to navigate the justice system with its lack of support (and in certain cases, to essentially be put on trial for crimes committed against them).
Underneath it all she is just another human being doing extraordinary things and I'm really looking forward to watching this.

willie joe, it was bad what happened the girl, in my opinion this is not the place or the avenue to post something like this.
It is a Mayo football related blog, not for personal agendas. You are doing great work with the blog by the way - football related!!

It's very rarely wj diverts from football stories and I don't see any issue in shaking up our consciences occasionally. Besides he told a good personal story of his link with Stephen McCormack.
No compulsion on anyone to get involved.
Nice comment Ann Marie, good to put life into perspective from time to time an d you did that so well.

As a serving member of the Defence Forces, I was disgusted with what one of our serving members ( or any man of which in this case I use the term loosely ) did to this poor woman. I was disgusted when he got a suspended sentence and delighted with the uproar that caused him to receive a prison sentence. It does enviably lead to the question though, Kyle Hayes. He received a suspended sentence around the same time for just as bad an assault. Where was the uproar in this case? Is it because he is a G.A.A. star that no one bothered to appeal against his suspended sentence?

Mayoman51 - I need no advice or assistance in deciding what's covered on the blog, not least in light of the obvious fact that this is a website I created myself.

Willie Joe. I commend you. Yes, I know this is a topic that upsets or annoys or perhaps angers some people.
But I was shocked at the treatment of Natasha and how a judge could stand over a decision like that.
It needs to be spoken about and we men need to be challenged.
My 20 year old daughter shakes me with her own experienced honesty. What a woman has to do, or plan or think about before she can go out on a night that we men don't think twice about.
Fair play to Natasha and well done for this post.
Ar scáth a chéile agus rudaí mar sin.
Míle buíochas.

@Mayoman51
I think maybe you should create your own Mayo GAA blog.
It would be the best way forward and you will avoid having to feel pee'd about this type of rare scenario happening again.

@Moose79 Bitter little dig because I'm a Dub so I must not have morals.Obviously you are on about Connolly, and I feel the same about him as Kyle Hayes and Crotty. Anyone who assaults someone should in my eyes and any normal person eyes do prison time. Connolly broke a guy's jaw and should of been in a cell for that. But well done on your little dig because I'm from Dublin. You obviously know my morals because of that. Do better.

Don't mind that comment at all ! I enjoy your comments as do alot on here .
I hear you on Kyle Hayes .
Your comment was spot on and honest what poor Natasha went through . Fair play to her standing up for women who were abused like she has and still does hard thing to do .

I look forward to watching this - she is a very brave lady. The sentences for this kind of violence against women are way too lenient, in general. @Hill16.I completely agree with you about Kyle Hayes. He got away far too lightly a d one gets the impression that his high profile as a GAA star had something to do with this leniency. In my opinion the opposite should apply to these people who are, or should be, role models, as they have an extra responsibly. Must say it sickens me to see these gushing character references that are produced by the defence. I also feel that the GAA have a responsibility also in these cases, with maybe lengthy suspensions, to demonstrate that this kind of behavior is completely unacceptable. Once again, well done Natasha.

This subject matter should be publicised, documented and broadcast whenever and wherever possible. There is no wrong place to shine a light on these behaviours and injustices.
I wish the brave woman a happy and fulfilled life, and that her example will give courage to those who have suffered a similar or indeed any attack, and to find the justice they deserve.

Mayo mayo1 , Sounds familiar with unqualified people dealing with huge amounts of money. Cluxton was right about bringing in loads of outside players. He saw it as a problem and I’m sure all the clubs down the country would agree. He probably wanted to develop local talent and rightly so, but meanwhile robbing small rural clubs of players.
