It’s a Bank Holiday Monday, it’s not raining (for now at least) and, after two rounds of matches, we’re sitting on top of Division One of the National Football League. As you no doubt recall we beat the Dubs yesterday and so it’s time for a quick gallop through the online coverage of the game. Here goes:
Locals: Western People, Mayo News, Connaught Telegraph, Dublin GAA, Dublin Live.
Nationals: Irish Times, Irish Independent (match report, quotes), Irish Examiner (match report, quotes), Irish Mirror (match report, quotes), Irish Sun (Andy Moran quotes, Ger Brennan quotes), GAA, RTÉ (match report, quotes), The 42, Balls.ie.
Photos: Sportsfile, Inpho.
The Mayo ladies also won yesterday. They had a thumping 5-14 to 0-7 victory over Wexford at Swinford in the LGFA NFL Division Two and there are reports on that game in the Mayo News and Connaught Telegraph.
The county’s hurlers, meanwhile, claimed a share of the spoils in their NHL Division Two game against London in a game that finished 0-19 to 1-16. There’s a report on that match in Ruislip in the Irish Independent.
Right, that’s you lot. Enjoy the Bank Holiday.

Andy’s comments on shooting efficiency, he’s right but fair play to him for going after that without seeming to put a fear of shooting into the team. Both things can be true.
Personal gripe, like the commemorative jersies and we must respect our heritage, but I dunno if the fact that we haven’t won an all Ireland for 75 years is something we should be celebrating and focusing on with a new team and mgmt we hope might deliver it.

Things going nicely so far. Missed 1st two from abroad but seeing yesterday’s highlights picking up deserved wins is a good habit. I’d be going after the league if in Management. Being brave seems to be paying dividends with lots of ball in. Might be worth sticking with McBrien in midfield with McHugh back as he’s scored a few now. However Glass, Rodgers and Conroy 2024 set the standard.we should be targeting for our engine room.
Lots of rusty teams including us but Andy’s sense of adventure is rubbing off so far. We’ll likely get ambushed in 1 or 2 games because the league is looser but didn’t reach Andy’s target of 20 points yet so lots to work on. 5/7 could get us to a final, we should go all out for that. Pity Conroy dropped out (injury?), need a run but Cian McHale is a good footballing replacement. Also no Cillian on the match panel so looking forward to his return like Diarmaid who got a trademark one. Encouraged by Beirne and being Citóg adds balance, like Small for Dubs both goaled well off so called weaker right foot, a good sign of a versatile forward.
Andy exudes the same confidence he had as a player, something which could spread.

.. on seeing out team picked I thought we’d win by 6/7 but took a sending off to help reach that target and Con missing also helped us to tune of a few points. . Need more tightening at the back as goal count against us in this one. Should set a target of 3 goals for per game, lots of goal drills. Stick with Carr.

I think we did alot of things well, yes shooting was poor at times, and we should have had atleast another goal, early days but alot of positive and strong bench.
We probably safe enough in league, one more win should do us,

Brilliant stuff from the team yes we have to get clean sheets and we will and winning Connacht and Sam Maguire is very important if we are to win Sam Maguire it will be Andy's 2nd or 3rd year before we deliver it and we need another win and a draw and then we are safe in Division 1 as we need 7 points to 8 points and we have a big squad to choose from the back room team of Colm Boyle Paddy Tally and Goalkeeper Coach Paul Durcan who won Sam Maguire with Donegal in 2012 are excellent and there will be a lot of silver ware coming including Sam Maguire and I have no doubt the minors and under 20s will be excellent roll on up Mayo

Only saw the highlights, Paddy Durcan seems to be improving.
A goal for Carr would be a real confidence booster.
Very harsh sending off.
Were the goals we conceeded of the soft variety.

We managed the final quarter, well done Andy and co. Possession from kickouts is still an issue but you can see they are working on it. Ten wides not really an issues, occasional wrong options but Diarmuid O Connors first point would be 'wrong option' had it not sailed over the bar. Great to have him back.
The Donegal game is perfect timing for Mayo and away from home all the better.

Well said we are rebuilding but hopefully looks like a good few years for us under Andy . No harm in Jordan there being a bit optimistic after the misery of the last few years we had to go through .
Donegal will be a big test but experience playing the 2nd best team at the minute will tell us alot where we are .

Very interesting to see how things develop with the full forward line for the remainder of the league.
Its clear now that ROD is number 11 for the year, his workrate and distribution make him nailed on for that.
Which means, by my reckoning there (should be) 3 jersies up for grabs in that full forward line. I would have Darragh Beirne as the man in front for one of those right now, we really need to see a run of form and fitness for Tommy Conroy as I haven't seen enough from him at club or county since his bad injury to warrant a nailed on start. Also Im of the opinion AoS should be an impact sub role these days as he just doesn't score enough and your 3 up top have to be scoring regularly. So then you are also looking at any of Towey/Lydon/F McLaughlin /Boland/ Cian McHale/ Cillian/ D McHale/ Carr fighting it out along with TC and AOS.
Going to be very interesting to see how it shakes out.
My gut tells me the starting ff line v Roscommon in champo will be Darren McH/AoS/Darragh Beirne but I think those spots are very much up for grabs if anyone takes their chance

Good Lord lads do ye not know that we're not permitted to have any sort of high expectations or positivity about our chance at all?. It just seems to be some source of amusement for some self appointed hope or hype police, particularly from outside the county.
God forbid a fan might try to roar on some encouragement to the team at a match too, the enthusiasm police seem to have shot that down as well. A good acronym for some of those that do admonish the fans that like to add a bit of noise or colour would be ICE - "In Case of Enthuasism".
That aside - while it's nice to have 2 wins on the board we're still away behind the real contenders. Dublin are not the force they once were and Galway (reasonably or unreasonably, and conveniently ignore our own missing panelists) will point to the omissions and exclusions from their own squad as a reason for their capitulation to us in Salthill. The true tests will be against the likes of Armagh, Kerry and Donegal and how we fare against them will show where we really are. I'd fancy our chances of getting another 2 points against Monaghan, and potentially Roscommon but the other 3 might be a different story. The last game against Roscommon could well be a relegation decider at that point if we don't pick up another 3 or 4 points by then. Tyrone were relegated on 7 points last year and if some self appointed experts were to be believed, we only stayed up by virtue of Donegal's reluctance to win. Crossbars and all that.
I love the brand of football we're playing and it' really leans in to what James Horan brought with a bit more emphasis on the forwards, but we do seem to be a bit open at the back and the likes of Kerry will make hay with that. Plenty work still to do.
Culmore says:
February 2, 2026 at 4:07 pm
The Kerry full forward line would destroy us at present, scoring maybe five goals. Donegal big test, they will have full team out and wanting a win at home, that game will give us a good idea where we are at. First two games we were always ones we were going to win, Dublin are a poor shadow of their last decade and Galway, we were due a win over them on the law of averages.
2 hops says:
February 2, 2026 at 4:35 pm
That would be a very left leaning FF line for champo @Supermac..I think it's either one of the Neale Tommy 's for number 15.
Tommy C always looking to take on his man while Tommy L is more a shoot on sight merchant...a MF Russell type of player.
Both of those are match winners on their day but Lydon very young of course and Conroy still in search of his best form but great to have so many options.
Definitely not dismissing the chance of Darren Mc having a huge season either but we'll soon need to see him making a bench too.
WestKerry says:

Id be optimistic traveling to Donegal if I was a Mayo supporter.
They had all the motivation in the world to give us a good beating yesterday and yet a very weakened Kerry team missing 13/14 regulars could have snatched a undeserving draw.
They are big and physical around the middle and if Mayo can match that and match their runners they've a good chance.
Supermac says:
February 2, 2026 at 5:53 pm
Actually good point '2 Hops' didn't click that they were all citeogs, that won't be the combo so, just the fact that Darren mchale is named as VC suggests Andy sees him as a starter, though that could just as easily be in half forward line i guess.
Towey and Boland are both on the fringes a good few years now so its time for those guys to be taking their chances now and really impressing in the league
Ever the optimist says:

McGuiness will pull the handbrake after this next game. Donegal's focus after securing safety will be Ulster, not a league title. It's a tight one to call but I'd bet Andy might throw on a few young lads and not take any risks with the embedded players. Relegation talk is ludicrous at this stage.

Is it not awfully early to be drawing conclusions on where Mayo are or where we are going this season. Roll back the clock to 2023, nfl home games in league v Tyrone and Kerry, Mayo were flying. Playing fast football, using Aido, the McStay world was humming nicely. It didn’t last come July
I’m definitely liking what I’m seeing but also finding it a little bit of Groundhog Day too. A new management comes in and Mayo are going really well early in league. Everything that’s happened in previous years, that’s in the past!. I’m perhaps too much of a sceptic I just feel there’s alot of critique of the old regime and lauding the new one after a few games.
On the positives I’m happy to see Ryan being tried at 11 consistently. We know Ryan can play there. He did in 2020 and has often floated out there to great effect. The concern I have is if he is locked down (which he can be), who else is linking the play for us? We needed more than one creative link man in the middle of the pitch. An option like a Finbar McLaughlin or Dawson could be really effective out here. In fairness Carney is a good passer too
Carr at full forward is my wish for the full league. Or a or fit Tommy Conroy. I want to see 3 natural full forward line players. I rarely see his name mentioned in the same breath as Darragh Beirne or Tom Lydon but id like to see Niall Hurley given a shot in the league.
Great to see Tuohy and Callinan start well. Much bigger tests to come for both but clearly both re energised
Olive Kerrigan says:
February 2, 2026 at 9:09 pm
- The first 20 minutes had good fast direct football played by both Teams.
- Tuohy was very influential during this 20 minute spell, great to see him being aggressive.
- Dublin then took Howard and Dunne off and the gave up on the long kickouts and went short thereafter, our attempts to challenge this were half hearted.
- McMahon's sending off had a big impact..i missed the strike....i only seen him push ROD.
- Callinan won a lot of hard ball, Carr needs to take his points, the goals will come.
- Donegal will be a different and a tougher challenge...both teams will be going to win this for a whole load of reasons.

Donegal midfield a worry, be hoping we can improve defence in 2 weeks. Don't think we were great again in that department last day. Little worry about Robbie letting a goal against Galway and Dublin for a tight angle. Maybe been a little harsh considering pull off excellent block especially against galway.

When all's said and done it doesn't really bother me whether fans are overly optimistic or downright pessimistic because none of these emotions will have any effect on the games to come. We'll win a share and pretty sure we'll lose the odd one too but win or lose, watching Mayo play proper attractive football again is such a boost. I know we're giving up chances to make chances at the other end and personally I'd prefer winning a high scoring game by a single point than edging a dour low scoring one with endless hand passing.
Don't know what this team will achieve but it should be an entertaining journey.

Delighted with the two wins as missed both and have just viewed. Hope springs eternal but hould your whist!. Lots of the old failings there through all the positivity. Poor shooting, wrong options, creaking back line, lost possessions and yes Donegal will be the ultiimste test. The management team is full of steely character. and time for those on the team to make their mark and perhaps create history.

Great to have four points on the board early as it should take a little bit of pressure off.
Another positive performance from the likes of Bob Touhy and Sam Callinan also encouraging.
Getting Jack Coyne and Diarmuid O’Connor back on the pitch really important.
While the management team will be disappointed with our overall conversion rate, I would imagine they’re happy enough with Carr. Similar to Tommy Conroy last week, it’s early days.

Queens v UL, 6pm - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYAO7AA3K-w
UCC v University of Galway, 8pm - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwyO1XwYES4

UL:
Usually 5 Mayo starters (to 7, Eoin and Hugh's injuries impacting their recent playing time), and anything up to 9 we might hope will see minutes on Thursday.
Cathal Corless (Davitts)
Cathal Keaveney (Parke KC)
Conal Dawson (Westport)
Cian McHale (Moy Davitts)
Dylan O’Brien (Davitts)
Eoin McGreal (Garrymore)
Frank Irwin (Ballina Stephenites)
Jack Melvin (Davitts)
Hugh O’Loughlin (Kilmaine)
Sean Morahan (Castlebar Mitchels)
UoG:
Has just been Tom starting consistently this year (doing a great job as playmaker at 11), but JMacM will be pushing hard if the fitness is there.
Conor Meaney (Westport)
Tom O’Flaherty (Aghamore)
John MacMonagle (Castlebar)
Dara Hurley (Claremorris)

@ TsuDhoNim. Brilliant information.
I have a question for you. I assume referee is responsible for inspecting pitch, goals etc and include any faults in his report.
Looking at goals at Albany or bacon factory end from the stands, the upright on right hand side falls away from the plane of the left, considerably.
It means that it is much easier to score a point when attacking up the right hand side and more difficult coming up the left.
There was two points at least, one from each side that went 'wide' and one waved wide that could very well have been a point had the goals be on the one plane.
Its been like that for quite some time, its our county pitch and this is of an unacceptable standard in my opinion
TsuDhoNim says:
February 3, 2026 at 3:50 pm
@Ontheditch: Yeah. Ref has a responsibility to inspect the pitch and ensure it's playable and to specification, though never paid much attention (not sure it's public?) in terms of what gets listed in the report so can't confirm that one.
Something like that would technically be in breach of the rules, where the posts aren't [a consistent] 6.5m apart ("1.3 (i) THE SCORING SPACE shall be at the centre of each endline. Each shall be formed by two goalposts, circular in cross section, which shall have a height of not less than 7m above ground level, and be 6.5m apart."), so certainly room to cause issue there down the line. Hopefully we see it corrected quickly.
Ontheditch says:
February 3, 2026 at 4:24 pm
Thanks TSU. That clarifies it and it certainly is in breach of the rule quoted by you. It could even be construed as giving an unfair advantage to the home team but not a level playing field. In fact we probably miss more scores from the left hand side. Its not fractionally out, it can be observed from any point on the stand.

Thanks Willie Joe. Are we talking about both ends? Are Albany and Bacon Factory ends not separate? In other words is Albany end not the one nearest Station Road, for want of a better description?
Ontheditch says:
February 3, 2026 at 6:05 pm
Thanks wj. Albany end only. Railway end looks ok but I've never observed it from a corner flag. Albany located where old bacon factory was.
2 hops says:
February 3, 2026 at 6:29 pm
Albany is down there Ontheditch but the Albany end is the opposite end.... Albany is or used to be written on the seats, they are/were obviously part sponsor. I hadn't noticed that I must say but no more than a breeze I suppose it evens itself out over the duration of the game.
I hope it's simpler than that floodlight issue to solve!
catcol says:
February 3, 2026 at 6:42 pm
Yes, 2 hops, that's my understanding of the Albany end - nearer the railway or Station Road.
Ontheditch says:
February 3, 2026 at 6:58 pm
Albany paint shop is at the opposite end to the railway side, I assumed the Albany end is the end where the shop is located.
Not having uprights on the one plane is not the standard desired for a county pitch and doesn't help when we go away from home. Its been like that for months, maybe since storm Eoghan. It should be rectified. Can't imagine it been a costly job.
Willie Joe says:
February 3, 2026 at 7:36 pm
It's a while since we've had confusion about which Albany end is the Albany end. In my book, the bacon factory end (so named for a bacon factory long gone) is clearly still the bacon factory end and not the Albany end (despite the Albany shop being located at that end) while the Albany end is obviously the end where the Albany sign (now barely visible) was painted on the concrete seating and not the end where the Albany shop is. Right, glad we cleared that one up!
I doubt Storm Eówn is relevant as regards the upright in question. They were taken down for the rugby match last March so the issue has to have occurred since then.
Jimbo says:

Point taken wj though it defies logic imo that Albany shop is one end but the other end is the Albany end.

The concession of goals is a worry for sure, but I think, if they get the system right, the defenders are there to do the job. If we had a starting six of Coyne, McHugh, Hession, Durcan, McBrien and Callinan, they’re as good as most counties have. As a backup, there’s Brickendon, Morahan, Coen, McMonigal, Loftus , Kelly and Plunkett. Any of those lads could easily fit in. There definitely seems to be more options this year than in the past. Hopefully they all stay injury free.

Isn't it amazing how far Dublin have fallen, and how quickly. Last Sunday was as poor a Dublin team and offering as I can remember in over 20 years. Think back only 6 or 7 years ago and the argument was how Dublin should be split in two, such was their resources in numbers and finances. Everyone was raving about their full time CEO. Looking at things now, you could just as easily argue and ask what the hell did they do with all those resources? On last Sundays showing, I believe we have handled the transition from our 2015/2021 team to our present side, better than Dublin have handled theirs. The signs were on the wall however as Dublin were not winning Leinster minor or U21 competitions, never mind getting to All Ireland finals.
Ontheditch says:
February 4, 2026 at 1:43 pm
@pepplesmeller. What was the score when dub player was sent off? Also, it is much easier for Dublin to 'transition' than other counties because all the players live close enough to one another, whereas in mayo they are scattered all over the county. They can have training sessions more frequently as a result.. I wouldn't write them off, though the new rules demand skills like fielding, long range scoring, ball winners in full forward line....not enough to be athletic. I thought Dublin were very flat on Sunday, the sending off should not have meant game over.
Ever the optimist says:

Well, I can tell you lads from the perspective of many Dublin gaa stalwarts, they have written themselves off for quite a few yrs. It's not a religion as it is in so many other counties, namely Kerry. It's always cyclical in Dublin. The Mrs is actively involved in a south Dublin club and she's listening to lots of talk about another generation before the interest gathers momentum again.
I think I'll be watching Mayo lift Sam long before Dublin again. That said, it'll take some outfit to beat this Kerry team under the new rules.
