I should really have cranked up the Monday match reports machine before now but I suppose better late than never. So here’s the first round-up of the year of the online coverage on a Mayo game, which was our FBD final loss to Galway at Tuam yesterday.
Locals: Western People, Connaught Telegraph, Mayo News, Galway Bay FM.
Nationals: Irish Examiner, Irish Independent, Irish Sun.
Photos: Sportsfile, Inpho.
Video: Spórt TG4 (full match).
Our Final Whistle podcast, recorded at a bracingly cold Tuam Stadium after the game yesterday, is available to club members on Patreon and is worth a listen. Mike and I are on it and there’s post-match reaction from Colm Boyle and from Galway’s John Concannon and Shane McGrath.
Right, that’s the FBD boxed off for another year. Now it’s onto the more serious stuff, starting in Salthill on Sunday.

Resevoir Dubs isnt much better we see a lot of contributors dissing Mayo on it Not at all West Kerry no nerves it , it was a good game but ref rode the Rossies at the end they should have won it
WestKerry says:

I dont agree re Ref at all,
Ther game should never have gone to ET haf the Ref not awarded a incorrect 45.
But them the breaks as they say.

If Geaney had got a black card when he clearly stepped across Stack - the point scored wouldn't have stood and Geaney would be in the bin for 10 crucial mins. Hard to understand how ref, two linesmen and two umpires can't see these things.
Clare says:
January 19, 2026 at 6:10 pm
The Rossies deserved to get that extra time they fought hard for it thought they were the better team in 2nd half anyway . I felt bad for the Rossies .

I would like to see us make use of the 3 scoring left footers we have at present, I would start Darragh Beirne at 13, Cian McHale at 10, and Conall Dawson at 5, 3 huge scoring threats on that right flank something we have never had in years.Just one thing small with Fenton Kelly who had a great game yesterday ,he shot a wide with the outside of the right on that right flank yesterday, which is always high risk.Think 5 would really suit Dawson coming from deep and Beirne and McHale have earned their starts.
Glorydays says:
January 19, 2026 at 6:33 pm

@WestKerry, you are being very selective in calling out the one mistake that Rossies benefitted from.
But you are only here to 'RISE' the people of the the west. I've lost all faith in your credibility over time.

Disappointing to lose yesterday, but overall the performance wasn't bad, though I thought Galway had the edge generally.
Looking forward, Andy will have to bite the bullet shortly on whom to release, and if newbies are coming in, somebody's got to give. Here's how I see it:
Gone from panel for now (don't think I'm posting anything that's not out there): Reape, MacLaughlin (injured anyway?), Reid, Neary.
If eight or nine newbies are brought in that would leave about four more regulars to go. I would earmark at least four of the current panel, all of whom have played in FBD.
Critical question marks surround Beirne, Lydon, MacMonagle, Hurley, O'Loughlin (probably a few others) on whether they will be permanent exiles to the U20 panel. MacDonald too.
So a new look team for the Allianz might not look that new.

Decisions go for and against you and you take the good with the bad.
The so called free at the end wasnt a free the Brigids player was looking for it and ref had the cop on to know that.
The Geaney black card was a 50/50 call as from my vantage point it was hard to get out of the way, ive only seen it live so I may be mistaken.
Im sorry youve lost faith however as my post was a bit of craic on blue Monday. 😔 😞
Brigids were unbelievable and are a young team who will be back again ive no doubt.
Really well coached and organised and with some excellent players.
Dingle will likely never get back there infact they may not win Kerry next year.
Every men adults national championship is in Kerry a feat that has never been done before.

The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about as Oscar Wilde said.
Mayo are one of those counties everyone loves talking about infact its the Mayo and Dublin home games in Tralee are the only ones I stay over in Tralee for.
The craic and the noise and colour is fantastic.
Theres respect there.. but we can all have a bit of craic occasionally.
Pepsi says:

Have a look at the frees that were criminally not awarded to St Brigids in extra time.
I counted 3 alone in separate places in 2nd extra time period, 20 yards out from goal, and Brigids were 2 points up at that point.
Also black card not issued by the referee to a Dingle player for clearly obstructing a St Brigids player in extra time.
We have seen this before in Croke Park, some Counties get everything and others get nothing particularly entering the final 5 or 10 minutes of a game.
St Brigids should feel hard done by.

Poor old Tuamstar catching flak yesterday, poor old West Kerry’s turn today! My view has always been that non-Mayo contributors are to be warmly welcomed here. Constructive external viewpoints will always enrich any discussion and we’re lucky to have a decent group of outside voices who post here regularly.

@Pepsi good lord almighty...one of the best games of football I can ever remember and you are literally going through the game counting frees. Some people love misery. It was an incredible game and neither side deserved to lose in truth. Whichever team lost could feel hard done by the ref. Talking about conspiracies against certain counties is utter nonsense and I genuinely hope you are taking the piss
WestKerry says:
January 19, 2026 at 7:38 pm
Pepsi,
What about the close-line on the Dingle forward that should have been a red or the 45 that allowed the game to go to extra time in rhe first place.
Why is it that people look for excuses when they are beaten.
The ref was not the winning or losing of that game.
The small margins were and they were very small.

From watching the club final I personally thought it was Dingle who could have had grievances with the officiating had they lost, the shocking 45 call and O'Carroll's and Stack's head high hits weren't your usual arm riding up over the shoulder, they were dangerous, you could see the mark from it beside Mark O'Connor's eye in all interviews afterwards. I didn't think Geaney's was a black card either, he didn't change his line, in saying that he knew full well what he was doing.
In saying that it was a brilliant game of football, Tom O'Sullivan is some footballer.

Sam og, I too like the idea of Dawson at 5 for a look, he can kick on next year.
Id say FrostTHammer is very close with his team, im gonna have a stab myself, going on pure hunches. I suspect Loftus be held back on this occasion if he was late to join the group, my hunch is Kobe won't appear either. I think Andy will go as strong as possible to get the win so will be a very established experienced team with 1-2 bolters thrown in, coin toss between Cian McHale/Darragh beirne for the number 13 but my hunch is beirne gets the nod.
Henelly
Hession
McBrien
Coyne
Durcan
Plunket
Dawson
Flynn
Howard
Carney
ROD
Touhy
Beirne
AoS
Conroy...
My guess on what it will be

I’m surprised with some of the proposed teams named with 10-11 established starters in the XI. I really think we need to give youth and new players a chance. I’d have a new player on each line of the team
1. Hennelly
2. Coyne
3. McBrien
4. McMonagle
5. Hession
6. Cullinan
7. Fenton Kelly or Keaveney
8. Tuohy
9. Nathan Moran
10. Finbarr McLaughlin or Conal Dawson
11. ROD
12. Jack Carney
13. Darragh Beirne
14. Tommy Conroy
15. Niall Hurley
I’ve been following the blog for 15 years but the incessant posts of some people are really ruining the blog.
Supermac says:

Id be of a similar mind Roco88, would like a total shakeup of personnel in the league with 6 or 7 newbies given a good craic but im gone with the team I think he'll play. He will be gling full boar for the win opening day out, against a rival, keep the good vibe going and most importantly gets points on the board ASAP. Sooner you get to 6 points can loosen up and experiment a bit.
There's several lads who'd be considered established starters there who have shown very little in the last few years when it comes to the serious business, sh1t or get off the pot time for a lot of them lads.
Supermac says:

Without getting into politics, I think fair bloody play to the Dublin footballers for the stance they are taking. If more organisations stood up for what is right it might have saved a lot of lives, but money rules the world. I wish the Mayo lads had engaged with that campaign but alas, it was not to be.
Anyway, back to the matter at hand. As regards next Sunday, I am going to make a wild prediction and say that at the very least, no matter what the result, we can't possibly deliver as miserable a display as we did against them last year!
Outside of the Boot says:
January 19, 2026 at 9:30 pm
Ya i like that Rocco , AOS should be left for impact role if necessary , let's keep Galway on their toes , Mchale and Irwin know each from college football and both on form so them two plus Conroy bring a more dynamic attack .
ROD at 11 , flanked by Tuohy and Carney
Moran and Flynn bring power to midfield , think we need to nail down a positon for Flynn .Dawson, Mcbrien and Durcan for running power and accurate passers and fullback line of Hession, Coyne and Sam .
If they look to lorry load high ball drop back Mcbrien but otherwise go for hardy fast team .
All41n14all says:

Roco88 says:
January 19, 2026 at 10:11 pm
@Superman agreed. For me bar McBrien, Coyne, ROD and again just a personal opinion, a fit Hession and Tommy Conroy, every position is up for grabs. I don’t think we have done anything the past 5 years for a player to be sure of their starting spot. When Horan came in, it was a clean slate. For me it’s the same now
On AOS starting I’m sure it will be debated to death again this year. No slight on what records he holds but I want to see 3 natural full forward line players in there. if we get beaten Sunday, persist with it. At the end of day AOS doesn’t carry a scoring threat against elite opposition. At 35/36 that’s not going to change.
No doubt says:

3 newcomers at any one time is well enough and get guidance from the established players.
Horans hat says:
January 19, 2026 at 10:28 pm
@outside of the boot agree with most of what you say but Callinan is not a full back line player at inter county level.Hes a half back all day.
Think McHugh is also a nailed on starter if fit and Flynn needs to go to midfield and find a partner for him.

Just like to make a comment on p Joyce he was in the officials ear again about the rule breach yesterday again same as last year . I haven't heard anyone comment on the connacht final last year where we got a line ball and joyce booted the ball down the line was that not a rule breach . We should have got ball brought forward for a kick able free yet no one highlighted this. If we got that free we would have probably won the game

I knew I recognised the score from yesterday. 2008 Connacht Final Mayo 1 14 Galway 2 12. 2009 Connacht Final Galway 2 12 Mayo 1 14. Also the no of times that Galway have beaten Mayo by 1 or 2 PTS in important matches over the years is just incredible. I will take a 1 PT win for Mayo on Sunday.

I think in terms of nfl predictions the picture is a bit clearer this year.
I think the relegation/promotion teams will just swap places again with Rossies/monaghan going down and tyrone/derry straight back up.
Such a pity div1 teams were throwing their arse at it last year from round 4 onwards as nfl is a brilliant competition and you will get far more out if going full tilt in those games then you will from the dozen closed doors friendlies.
A simple obvious tweak is the get rid of the final and give the title to the table toppers on final day

As can be seen from all the completely different predicted teams on here, it is extremely difficult, at the start of this new Era, to predict the team with and degree od confidence, so I am not going to even try. I am sure Andy will be very keen to maintain our Division 1 status and wiil want to start well and lay down a marker. So I don't expect to see too many newbies, except perhaps one or two in the forwards, maybe Cian McHale and Beirne. I would'nt be surprised to see Thornton at midfield. Somebody has picked Brickenden at Full-back. I like Rory as a footballer and could see him as a midfielder or half-back, but he is not and never will be a full-back. Would'nt it be great to start with an away win and get one over on our great rivals.
