We’ve had our first Mayo match of the year, our first defeat of the year in the form of a first-ever loss to London and we’ve also had the first call made by a contributor here on the blog this year for the management team to consider their positions. What a time to be alive.
It’s definitely time, too, for a return of the Monday match reports post. Here’s what’s online about yesterday’s loss to London in the Dome as well as the hurlers’ defeat to New York and Lahardane’s loss to Listowel on Saturday.
Starting with yesterday’s game:
Locals: Mayo News, Western People.
Nationals: Irish Independent, Irish Examiner.
Others: RTÉ (match report, quotes from Kevin McStay), Balls.ie.
Photos: Sportsfile, Michael Maye.
Video: Mayo GAA (post-match with Kevin McStay, Shay Rafter), Michael Maye (match highlights).
Over on the Mayo Football Podcast we’ve got a Final Whistle pod recorded at the Dome, in which Mike, Colm Boyle and I discuss yesterday’s reversal and what it means in the grander scheme of things. That pod is up on Patreon – here.
There are match reports on New York’s Connacht hurling League win over Mayo in the Dome on Saturday night in the Mayo News, Western People and Irish Central. There are photos from the game by Sportsfile.
Finally, Lahardane’s defeat by Listowel Emmets in the All-Ireland Junior club semi-final on Saturday is covered in the Mayo News, Connaught Telegraph, Western People, Irish Examiner and Irish Independent.
Right, that’s the lot for now. Have a good Monday, all.

mayo News sums it up nicely, Mayo were predictable and pedestrian. A poor display even from an experimental side 10 wides and 2 ponts in the second half is a bad display from any side in any grade. We saw in the senior championship the lack of scoring forwards in MAYO. Most of these newcomers are well off the level required. Depth is a real issue.

Bit of perspective warranted on the result. More than half that side were competing for the last couple of spots on the extended panel. If they were seen as potential starters or even bench options for this year they should not have been played in such an experimental line-up.

Half the London panel were also first timers

Just to remind everyone the season ticket renewal closes tomorrow, i have one since the start but think i won't renew just seems to be no value anymore, only benefit is a guaranteed all ireland ticket once you buy a ticket for every championship game even if not able to attend.

@mayo 67 . Unfortunately your correct. Above any year we didn't have any forwards put their hand up during the club championship.
I still wouldn't be too hard on the newbies after one game that they played with a team of lads they probably only trained with a few times.
I'm sure they will get more opportunities in challenge matches of the next few weeks but some of them are just not county standard yet ..

I agree with Blondie 11. I have renewed my season ticket but will this be my last year. The All Ireland ticket is a nice reward for loyalty but previously credit was given to those of us who braved the league games. Gaa have now disregarded this loyalty and you must attend all championship matches bar one. Even the most loyal of supporters will find it difficult to fullfil this obligation especially during holiday season. Unfortunately the GAA have shown no regard to those real supporters who have shown unwavering loyalty over the years.

Cian Hanley with a last minute winner to beat UG in Dangan tonight. Big shock. Ryan O'D also scored a goal in that game.

Is that UCG gone now GBXI, given how star studded they looked on paper probably something of an upset.
Though from a selfish Mayo pov not the worst thing in the world as ROD and Conroy need to be wrapped in cotton wool, with seemingly no new attacking talent putting their hands up those 2 are now our most important players. If we lose either we are goosed for the season imo

No, they have another chance in a game next Wednesday in Dangan against the loser of ATU v St. Mary's. If they lose that game they are out.
Yeah, I'm not sure they are games that help Mayo but hopefully the Mayo lads find form and bring it to league, with no injuries.
Always found it hard to understand Cian Hanley not being involved with the senior team the past two years. Can only assume he opted out. Such a smart, talented player would be a big addition to the current squad.

Cian Hanley in interview explained how in his last senior panel stint he had difficulties with the training volume and his knees.
Don't know if that would be a factor now. But just putting forth some public info.

Mayo would certainly beat London in the Connacht championship. In 2026 were lined up to have the fixture back after Covid-19.
