Mayo’s place in history

With the Sam Maguire set to winter in the county this year for the first time since 1951, Rob is joined by good friends of the podcast Mick Foley and Ciarán O’Hara from the Gaelic games history podcast Over The Bar to chat about where Mayo’s All-Ireland victory this year fits in relation to some of the great wins of the past and to consider what made 2026 so significant.

The lads chat about the impact of social media and how it made the story about Mayo’s All-Ireland success go right around the world, contrasting this with the more limited impact of Offaly’s hugely historic 1982 title win. They also discuss how, to those outside of Ireland, Mayo ended up representing every corner of the island in the wake of the win over Kerry.

Mick and Ciarán lean into their deep knowledge of Gaelic games history to talk about alternative jerseys worn by Mayo down the years and they also have a look at the history of the Sam Maguire trophy.

Seismic victory, most seismic coverage, television in US, and Australia covering story. Number of losses, story of curse, the great Dr. Micky Loftus, sadly passing away, 2 years ago, to sadly the last of 1951 team. Wearing white jersey, been such big underdog for All-ireland final, starting so slowly on the day. Like a movie, or a dream. Sad that Dr. Micky Loftus, was not around to see it, be great to see him and his grandnephew with cup, but sure looking down on team that day

Great to see Jack Coyne and Darragh Beirne with Sam Maguire in St Louis Secondary school in Kiltimagh today, a school that has probably underacheived in schools football and hasnt had a Mayo Senior footballer in a while.

I can never understand Mayo men wanting to make footballers out of Galway i never forgave John O Mahony for winning Sam twice with Galway and never will. I hope Horan stays away from them. Rochford will probably take them on

It'll probably be Rochford

@glorydays … Galway have a great tradition of paying a huge amount of “expenses “ to their managers .

Pj had his chance , was quietly hoping he’d stay on . The rumours about him going were circulating 6 weeks ago .
Doubt Horan would get it or go for it..
Rochford might be tempted but hope he doesn’t go for it .

In fairness to Joyce he raised standards in Galway football.
He has left a sound footing for the next manager.

Horan has said several times he will not manage any other County outside Mayo.I wouldnt be a bit surprised with Rochford going for it. Have Galway much talent coming under 23 bracket, it seems to have dried up , there best players are all mid to late 20s and early 30s.But that current squad well capable of going all the way.

My yearning came to an end yesterday evening when I held Sam in my arms,I found the moment quite spiritual (inner peace).
I just want to thank Kilmovee Shamrocks GAA Club for the way they organised the event bused from car park, coffee, biscuits & covered seating.

Inner peace. Yes. I thought about winning Sam everyday a few times per day after the 96 final to present. It was actually a huge thing psychologically. Not a throw away line, Mayo football and the efforts to win just ever present. I worried I'd have that Olympic winners slump of "what now?", but ya, just at peace with it.
