The list of nominees for this year’s PwC All-Star awards was announced this morning and, as expected, All-Ireland champions Mayo lead the way in the list of football nominees, with eleven players included.
Jack Livingstone, Jack Coyne, Donnacha McHugh, Sam Callinan, Enda Hession, David McBrien, Jack Carney, Jordan Flynn, Ryan O’Donoghue, Darragh Beirne and Kobe McDonald are all included in the 45-player list of nominations.
Twelve counties are represented in this year’s nominations, with Mayo securing 11, followed by Kerry on seven, Dublin five, Westmeath four, Monaghan, Armagh and Louth three each, Roscommon, Cork, Galway and Tyrone two each and one from Donegal. The full list of nominees is here.
Mayo are also prominent in the shortlist for both the Footballer of the Year and Young Footballer of the Year awards, which will be voted on by the players themselves. Ryan O’Donoghue and Jack Carney are included on the FOTY shortlist along with Kerry’s David Clifford, while Darragh Beirne, and Kobe McDonald are joined by Louth’s Dara McDonnell on the YPOTY shortlist.
This is the 55th year of the All-Star awards stretching back to 1971. The PwC All-Stars will be presented at a gala black-tie event at Dublin’s RDS on Friday, 30th October, which will be shown live on RTÉ.

And Ryan and Kobe for p'soy.
Dave Johnston says:

Ryan should be a cert for player of the year. Beirne probably deserves young player of the year ahead of Kobe. He had more of an impact in the final. But Kobe will probably pick up the award. Wont complain either way.

Hession, Carney, Jordan and Ryan are the four absolute certs for me. After that, one of Beirne or Kobe ends up with Young Footballer of the Year and the other takes an All‑Star. Then you’re probably looking at one or two more Mayo lads from that list getting in, but it’s genuinely hard to separate them all equally deserving.
Ryan should be Footballer of the Year, but you can already picture the Kerry media machine making plenty of noise to push their golden boy for it.

Well-deserved nominations - we should sweep the boards. But watch how the POTY will be framed. The Kerry media mafia will be all over this one. David, the GOAT, being challenged by two Mayo upstarts; and shouldn’t O’Donoghue have got red anyway. Yada, Yada.
Kerry will see it as essential to get Clifford over the line on this one, and their efforts will be interesting to watch.
richardmgd says:

Congrats to all lads nominated, could have been more E McGreal despite short season as worthy a nomination as a couple of other county defenders selected.
Should likely break down Mayo 7, Kerry 3, Others 5.

Ryan has to win poty.
Clifford is a better forward than Ryan but pound for pound this year Ryan skins him for being a better player.
It probably doesn't work like that though.

Selection committee are the Dublin based media and don’t pick the player of the year the players vote the player of the year and the gpa pick the young player of the year it would be hard to see a player that wouldn’t make the all star team get young player of the year that would make a mockery of the awards but there is always talking points

Sam Callinan, Enda Hession, David McBrien, Jack Carney, Ryan O’Donoghue (POTY), Darragh Beirne and Kobe McDonald (one of those YPOTY probably Darragh).
McHugh, Flynn and Livingston unlucky to lose out. Kerry keeper gets it on a better final performance (IMO)

Congratulations to all who have been nominated for All Stars as well as POTY and YPOTY. Great to see so many players picked from Mayo. Remember though, these awards count for nothing in the grand scheme of things. Celtic Crosses are the only currency when you play Inter County Football at the top level. For years we won loads of All Stars, but never the All Ireland. (I think we have the 4th most All Stars Awards since they began in the 70's). If you were to offer a player an All Star versus a Celtic Cross, I think all would opt for the latter. Nice to win, but not worth a lot.
Roll on 2027.
Anne-Marie says:
September 22, 2026 at 1:07 pm
Catcol I had a look back at the Roscommon thread the other day. It's fair to say some of the comments have not aged well but we were in a fair state of shock. The second last comment on the thread was fairly prophetic, mind!
Darragh Beirne is YPOTY for me, all day, every day. The Kobe Factor as Mike puts it was immense this year, no doubt about it, and he really sprinkled magic and joy over the whole season, but Beirne made a bigger impact on the field. I'd go so far as to say there is no contest there.
Clifford has a legitimate claim on FOTY in my opinion, he is one of a kind (Spillane is right, he is the GOAT), but I think it's fair to say he wouldn't be the most popular winner - not through any fault of his own, I hasten to add. Ryan had the bigger impact in the final on the play in general - his workrate eclipsed Clifford's and I do think that has to count for something. We'll see if the voters are the sentimental types. I suspect they might be.
Absolutely thrilled to see Jack Carney nominated for POTY. What an endorsement for him, and what a journey he's been on over the last 12 months. Incredible.
I'd agree with Liberal Role in the Tie re Jack Coyne. He really struggled early on, but did the business at the business end. Eoin McGreal can feel a bit hard done by but he missed a good chunk of time, and I predict it won't be too long before we see him in a tux holding a statuette. And he's nailed on for a Club Star surely!
Another "pinch me" moment this morning with this announcement. If you'd told me in April we'd be arguing on here over whether we deserve 6 or 8 All-Stars, I'd have been checking your temperature. Let alone doing so as All-Ireland Champions.
Magic. Pure magic.
Way out West, I think some of the players that have previously won All-Stars would beg to differ about them counting for nothing - many of them have spoken about how much it means to them and their clubs. To have an All-Star on the mantlepiece and a Celtic Cross in the back pocket is surely a whole new wonderful world, though.
2 hops says:

We were poor against the rossies but in fairness to them, they were excellent. I for one think the performance they put in that day would have ran Kerry close on all Ireland final day. Although I am not convinced that they would have had the belief to get across the line.
There's a lesson there for us and our attempt to go back to back. It's really difficult to play the way we (and the Rossies) did week after week, and the new structure means you need a bit of luck to avoid teams who are peaking in May and June. You can list off the shocks from this year and in most cases it was teams with an eye on the big prize losing to teams who's goal was just to make it to croker, or in Down's case just play for Sam.
Southmayo Exile says:
September 22, 2026 at 6:13 pm
Celtic crosses are the currency not all stars. I'm sure Keegan would give up his player of the year and all stars for one celtic cross.
It's the players who decide who the poty is - not the media.
I'm fairly sure a few years ago a player got young poty award but didn't get an all star
The deel rover says:
September 22, 2026 at 6:55 pm
Perhaps its because he is a fellow clubman but i Have to Agree with No doubt. To say it’s a no contest for Ypoty is doing a disservice to some of the performances Kobe put in this year all while under intense pressure and scrutiny none of which he let affect him . As well as scoring 1-28 the majority from play , his highlight reel of scores is off the charts, not to mention the times he came out to win possession when it was badly needed . I’m pretty sure i heard Andy say that he also assisted the most scores as well . Its going to be close between the 2 not that either of them will care as they have the all ireland medal in their back pocket.
catcol says:
September 22, 2026 at 7:03 pm
FrosT - that's the beauty of the new system; it forces teams to focus on one game at a time.
Keeping an 'eye' on the prize won't work, it's just beat what's in front of you and adapt from week to week. I think that's what Andy and the lads did to perfection. They weren't looking beyond the next game, but they analysed where they were weak and was needed to rectify matters. This process accelerated once we got to Croke Park. We blossomed there, but again it was week to week. Donegal didn't do that, nor did Armagh. They'll be learning lessons for '27 of course.

Coyne. Once he regained form he was as steady as a rock......and that speech!
McBrien put out fires so often and had a huge influence in the final.
Hession. The only surprise is that Enda didn't get a pity nomination.
Carney. A shoe-in and well deserved.
Flynn. Touch and go but would love him to get one.
Bierne. His impact throughout the championship and his final heroics deserve one and ypoty.
ROD. Nothing more needs to be said. Head and shoulders above all other pots contenders.
Kobe. I would give him one but the powers that be might feel they need to recognise others.

I couldn't really split Kobe or Darragh for YPOTY. Two brilliant players.
Some of the scores those lads put up were outrageous. Darragh selling a dummy against Louth in front of the hill. Kobes point at the end of the first half against Meath.
Scores you could watch back over and over.
Three Mayo Marquee scoring forwards.
What a time to be alive.

But most of time it goes to AL winners so Ryan hopefully will get it. McBrien ' Hession ' Carney ROD Beirne Callinan are my tips.

There’s one aberration in there (McCurry) who did unbelievable things in very limited time on the pitch. One other I think could feel hard done by us Enda Smith of Roscommon, a really top player who we struggled against. In the backs there’s a case for either of our lads. Coyne’s overall reading of the game and leadership is a factor, I saw him organising the team quite a bit. In the Dara vs Kobe debate, very close call, Dara got more scores but Kobe came deep to carry ball as well. On Ryan vs Clifford, I think the pundits on AI final day were giving it to Ryan even though I would agree Clifford is the the GOAT and has done unbelievable things as a forward this year. In the final I’d say Ryan had the greatest influence and maybe the semi as well. Clifford was scoring big in every game. Possibly Ryan but there’s a case for both. Jack is no 3 in the order.
JoeT1480 says:

My sense of the All-Stars is that they are too AIF-centric. Recency bias all over it. I cannot understand how it’s been accepted as fact that the keeper All-star is Kerry bound. Jack Livingstone made more quality saves in this year’s championship than has ever been made by any keeper in a championship.

We've won it now. I couldn't care less about them now. We will win plenty of them and rightly so but I just think of the arguments now as a bit of fun.
The fans of Kerry, and every other contender for that matter, would much rather be in our position. We have the most important awards (in Sam and the Celtic crosses) here in Mayo!

There's a big campaign emanating from the South West to get D. Clifford the FOTY, lots of chatter on social media, the Kingdom cohort of pundits weighing in, the usual stuff.
While he is undoubtedly a generational talent and the best forward in Ireland, IMO Ryan was the best playmaker, the best tackler and the driving force behind our championship victory this year, as well as contributing a hefty proportion of our scores. In comparison, Clifford doesn't stray beyond the 40. It has to be ROD, in my view.
Darragh Beirne got an unreal score from pretty much the sideline in the final, as well as nailing a brilliant goal. I would give him YPOTY over Kobe, as young Mac dipped a wee bit in the final compared with previous games, although still making a significant contribution.
Isn't it a great issue to have, all the same?
I would also give Livingstone the keeper's jersey, as he produced vital saves in all of the games we played in the All-Ireland series, must have prevented about seven goals against Monaghan alone. And he dealt very well with high balls into the square against Kerry, which has been a problem for us in previous All-Ireland finals.

A lot of great stories of development, during the season (Jack Coyne, Daragh Beirne, David McBrien in terms of role and positioning) and also in terms of a player's overall career (Jordan is a stand out for me here). How many All Stars we should have and which of our two outstanding corner forwards deserve Young Player of the Year are incredible problems to have.
David Clifford is already a legend of the game and is very likely to be the best player I'll ever see play. But is he going to be PoTY every year til he retires? Condolences to Seamus Tuohy RIP . On the All Stars I would definitely think Hession McBrien Carney Flynn and ROD have outstanding chances . Livingstone, Calnan, Coyne , Beirne and Kobe are all in with a shout but I’d say we will end up with 6 or 7. The Kerry goalie, Foley and the 2 Clifford’s should get ones for Kerry. In an outstanding year for the GAA you would have to think that Louth and Westmeath will surely get at least one each. No doubt the Dubs will get one or two and beaten semi finalists Tyrone must have a shout while Monaghan could also sneak one so as there are only 15 to go around I reckon it could be 6 for us. I expect ROD to get POTY though I do think the best player in the country is Clifford ( 15 and 16 points in his last 2 club games) but I think Ryan was the most influential player throughout the year and played an incredible role on getting us over the line. On the YPOTY it’s so hard to know Both Beirne and Kobe were outstanding but don’t discount the Louth No 6 who was excellent all year. At a push I’d be inclined to go for Darragh Beirne

RO'D, Carney & Hession the bankers.
Livingstone, Coyne, McHugh, Callinan, McBrien, Flynn, Beirne & McDonald all in with very good shouts. Optics and 'balance' in the picks will potentially play a role too outside of just performances, so nearly impossible to call how the panel might end up voting.
I'd probably expect:
1. Murphy*
2. Callinan*
3. Foley
4. Hession
5. Whittaker
6. McDonnell
7. McMorrow*
8. Carney
9. Kilpatrick
10. Scully
11. RO'D
12. P Clifford*
13. Beirne*
14. D Clifford
15. McDonald*
1 - You'd easily make a case for Livingstone and his saves being absolutely huge in the winning All Ireland run & he played his role to perfection for the team, but Kerry built their game plan around dominating the middle with the 4 big lads. It gave Murphy the kind of restart wins a team would have dreamed of at the start of the year. Hard to see his frequent high retention (despite it being a team effort and a tactical choice that had downsides elsewhere for the team) not earning him the pick, especially with the politics of Mayo lads expected to pick up others elsewhere.
2 & 7 - Super tight calls (with the other 4 spots relatively set in my mind). Could go with any of Callinan, Coyne, McBrien, McHugh, Breen, Devlin, Wallace, Burns, McMorrow or Byrne here.
12 - wouldn't be my choice, I'd go Stephen O'Hanlon (sorry Jordan!), but who I'd expect to win. Started every one of Kerry's Champ games & played over 85% of their Champ minutes, so Mugsy off on minutes being his issue IMHO. A lack of form after the injury in the early games back could hurt him, but being key in their QF, SF & once McGreal tired and got taken off him in the Final where he popped off will potentially be enough.
15 - Dylan Geaney might hold this & force a 50/50 call between DB & Kobe or one at 12. Before the final he'd have been a banker & hard to write a lad off when injury played such a big part in a quiet performance... but the weightings for Finals are so high, positive or negative, you could see himself and Breen paying a price and missing out.

There is no way in the world the Jordan Flynn should lose out on an All star, he was immense in the final and along with McBrien he marshalled and led the defensive set up out the field in the final 19 minutes, he put huge pressure on the Kerry kickers attempts for 2 pointers.
I don't think there should be many outside Mayo and Kerry, not a chance Foley from Kerry should get an Allstar, he had a disaster of a final and a very poor semi final only,
Kerry should have David Clifford, maybe Paudie, no Sean O Shea, maybe the goalkeeper, no defenders in the mix.
Mayo should get Beirne, O Donoghue, Kobe ( and young player of the year, Flynn, Carney, Hession, McGreal, McBrien, maybe goalkeeper, possibly Diarmuid O Connor.
At least 10.
