Mayo Football Podcast Up for the Match event next Sunday

Mayo Football Podcast Up for the Match event next Sunday

Once upon a time Connacht final day used to involve two matches, with the Minor final acting as the curtain-raiser to the main event. Those days are gone now, however, so instead we have to make our own fun before the ball is thrown in to start the Senior final.

With this in mind, the Mayo Football Podcast team are delighted to unveil our plans for a Connacht final Up for the Match event next Sunday afternoon.

The full podcast team will be there for the event and we’ll be joined at it by special guests Colm Boyle, John Maughan and Barry Cullinane, with other special guests yet to be announced. There’ll be an hour of Connacht final chat and general merriment before the on-field battle then commences.

The event is taking place at An Sportlann, right beside Hastings Insurance MacHale Park. Throw-in for the event is 2pm this day week and we’ll be wrapping up an hour later, well before the Nestor Cup decider gets underway at 4pm.

Our Connacht final Up for the Match event is taking place in association with our podcast partners EBS and with the kind support of Castlebar Mitchels. Entry to the event is free and we’re looking forward to seeing plenty of Mayo and Galway fans at An Sportlann for it.

Any preview for the U20 final also WJ?

Nephin - that's not the plan. It's just an informal, in-the-moment live show. These kind of events, in our experience, don't come across all that well as podcast episodes.

Mayo Man for Life - we haven't any such plans. By Sunday the U20 final will be over and, to be honest, the interests of underage football are far better served when kept well away from the limelight.

E

Ever the optimist says:

April 27, 2025 at 5:03 pm

From what I'm hearing two hops there's little chance of that happening. The mobile phone is hopping from updates from her indoors who's at the game. Leinster badly needs this though. Louth will be champing at the bit to get their revenge on the royal county.

Strongly believe given Meath Louth final in Leinster that their provincial final should be played outside of Croker. Stick the final in another ground and the atmosphere will be electric

K

Km79 says:

April 27, 2025 at 5:45 pm

Dubs and Tyrone 3rd seeds
The draw is on mid week

We might have a stupid situation again where teams know it’s better to lose a provincial final depending on the draw they get

K

Kick the Ball says:

Dublins 15 year chokehold on Leinster is over. Louth finally get their replay with Meath!

E

Ever the optimist says:

Louth will want it in Croker as that's where they were robbed that fateful day.

K

What odds were Meath I wonder ………longer than our long odds the next day I’d wager

J

John+McHale says:

Did it make a difference that the Dubs had to travel for this one.
In my opinion if the game was played in Croke Park and Dubs would have won it.

1st seeds - Kerry Galway Armagh Meath

2nd seeds - Clare ,Mayo Donegal , Louth

3rd seeds - Dublin,Tyrone,Monaghan,Roscommon

4th seeds - Derry,Down,Cork,Cavan

Worst case could be , Kerry Mayo , Dublin, Cork

And hopefully ourselves and Galway

O

@ Sean Burke, that would be the group of death.
A tough draw might be good for us.

N

No doubt says:

April 27, 2025 at 7:39 pm

All the talk here about mayo regressing and the likes todays result just shows it's a lot of nonsense talk really as nobody knows what's ahead. It's very possible as sean says meath could finish as seed one and there's no way anyone here would have said that even yesterday if asked. A purple patch with the new rules could mean a team building up a lead big enough to hold out like we saw today.i agree with others that making the draw b4 the provincial finals is madness and would love to hear it explained.

J

Joe says:

April 27, 2025 at 7:51 pm

A Meath - Louth final will have 50 k at it at least

R

Rusty Bridges says:

April 27, 2025 at 7:57 pm

@no doubt the GAA will come up with some nonsense about logistics. This is the same organisation who insist on the ludicrous preliminary quarter final to avoid dead rubbers. But they then make matters worse, by giving the teams who play in it no rest. A team could actually qualify for prelim by drawing 1 games & losing the other 2, while ourselves & Galway both ended up in prelim having won 2 & drawn 1 game. The round Robins are also staggered to start over 2 weekends, which is a nonsense. It's all such a nonsense. If they insist on provincials being the preamble to the real stuff, then they should all finish on the same weekend. Start Leinster & Ulster first as they have more teams & takes an extra round to complete. Rant over :)

S

Supermac says:

April 27, 2025 at 8:00 pm

No Doubt.

Spot on, on all recent form Galway win well next week but all recent form goes out the window in this fixture always. It will only be a kick of a ball in it in Castlebar next week as it always is the case between these 2 teams. Local derbies always an outlier on form

One thing for sure is Dublin are firmly back in the pack, top 10 at best, that's a soft touch meath side that just dumped them out

M

Mayoman in down says:

April 27, 2025 at 8:02 pm

I hope we have a quality game of football.
Could we hope for an adult, sporting occasion. I find the pushing and shoving, the snarling and hateful squaring up to each other, juvenile and unworthy of our great game. Nasty behaviour is pathetic. I think I read of Aidan O'Shea saying that he has met Damian Comer and they both questioned why they should act as if they should hate each other when in actual fact they had a great time together. Let's set an example for our young people and children that can help them to grow into respectful people.

S

Supermac says:

April 27, 2025 at 8:06 pm

To hell with that Mayoman in Down, i want lots of snarling, shoving and needle. That's all part of the craic in the derby games :-)

K

Km79 says:

April 27, 2025 at 8:21 pm

With the new rules the last 10 minutes of knockout championship games this summer are going to be brilliant.
So much extra space, 2 pointers etc

There are still a few tweaks needed but my god it’s so much better to watch already.

I’m hoping that our chaotic nature sees us through next Sunday!

1

1985 says:

April 27, 2025 at 8:38 pm

No idea what bearing Meath winning today has on mayo’s form .i would imagine it shows that Dublin have clearly regressed as they were beating all Leinster opposition by 20 points a few years ago .like ourselves they have lost a number of generational players over the last few years and like ourselves the replacements aren’t at the moment in any case at the same level. You can only judge any team on their recent performances

N

Nephin says:

April 27, 2025 at 8:47 pm

If someone handed each of us €500 yesterday with the instruction to put it on Meath today or us next week. What we have done. Be honest.

1

1985 says:

April 27, 2025 at 9:03 pm

Well it’s obvious mayo would have been considered a better bet than Meath .what were the odds on Meath today

N

Nephin says:

April 27, 2025 at 9:04 pm

Exactly 1985, so why all the doom and gloom on here.

1

1985 says:

April 27, 2025 at 9:17 pm

Probably because people have seen our last 3 performances and judged that against Galway’s last game where they appear to be strong in all the area’s that we appear to be weakest .How is any game or final previewed without looking at previous games as a guideline

M

Mangochutney says:

April 27, 2025 at 9:23 pm

Meath took their chance today unlike cork last week. Def some passengers on that Dublin team and whilst cluxton will always be a legend of the game I think him starting this year has actually hampered Dublins development for a new keeper. For sure the end of an era now for Dublin but they have a bag full of all Ireland medals in the last decade - us on the other hand have witnessed a couple of games over the last 2 weeks which can help us in advance of Sunday.

Depending on weather the wind could be a huge factor. I was at the league game and we were terrible but I think we only went in a point up with the wind at half time. 10 point loss.

Discipline now so important, Donegal mastered not fouling in the large D - no real scope for teams scoring gimme 2 pointer frees. This is an absolute must for us with the quality of Galway’s shooters.

Kickouts - we have have have to (have) a strategy. I don’t know what that is? But Dublin got eaten today for large parts in their kickouts with and with out the wind. Meath were also way more physical on the breaks. We need a huge improvement here.

Hopefully we can make it a coin toss in the end with the home venue and good games from Flynn, Ruane , and Diarmuid who are all due to take off at this stage.

C

Clare says:

April 27, 2025 at 9:25 pm

@No doubt fully agree with you !

Fair play to Meath .

The group stages will be interesting .

Who knows what can happen on Sunday but still think we will be alot closer to Galway then people think . As others said Pride will kick in with the guys and I hope they throw everything at it and just go for it.

B

BatetheBlanket says:

April 27, 2025 at 9:54 pm

Guys and girls, the bold reality is that Mayo cannot score those enough of those long range points, look at Meath and Louth today, great scores from everywhere.
On paper Galway have the stronger team, hopefully Mayo come up with a plan, this could mean O Shea will be stationed at midfield area.

J

Justoutsideballagh says:

April 27, 2025 at 11:07 pm

1985 you hit the nail on the head. Anyone that has seen Mayo lately and Galway knows why Mayo fans worried about what's instore next weekend. Of course we want them to win but if form stands for anything, hard to see how we are going to do this!

1

1985 says:

April 27, 2025 at 11:21 pm

Strangely it seems if you say you don’t think mayo will win a particular game then you aren’t really a proper supporter.i absolutely hate losing to Galway of all teams and I remember a young Paul conroy coming off the bench to score the winning point for Galway back in the 2008 final and being in a raging bad mood for the entire week afterwards.

C

Charlie says:

April 27, 2025 at 11:41 pm

I really think people are underestimating Mayo. Galway have been beaten in two recent AI finals and the psychological toll has to be immense. So, I think Galway will throw Mayo a bone on Sunday and look to concentrate on the bigger picture in July. As Clare would say "Its in the bag"

F

FrostTHammer says:

April 27, 2025 at 11:43 pm

Cork and Meath lay the down the marker for determination, courage, strength, bravery and sheer hard work. If we reach those levels we should have enough talent to be competitive with anyone.

C

Clare says:

April 27, 2025 at 11:53 pm

@Charlie

Did I once say it's in the bag? If that's directed at me..

I think Galway will win on Sunday your form is just better then ours lately .

Ye have it and it's yours to loose.

I can't see us beating ye on Sunday tbh .

I am just hoping to god we give a good performance surely we have more in the tank then what we've seen the last 3 games .

I will go in hope rather then expectation.

GlasagusDearg. says:

Congrats to Meath and great to see Dublin knocked off their Leinster pedestal. However, I would'nt be complete writing them off, as some are, just yet. They had a particularly bad day at the office, nothing seemed to go right for them, a number of their lads had uncharacteristicly off days and Meath played out of their skin. But Dublin will go away, prepare and I feel, will improve significantly. I certainly would'nt like to see them in our group. The Meath Louth final should be tasty. I know people from both counties and they detest each other and Louth are still smarting from Sheridan's goal(I mean try.).

E

Ever the optimist says:

April 28, 2025 at 6:43 am

That Dublin result yesterday was what Fenton foresaw I'd say and there's plenty on that team with no all Irelands. Meath were better and more aggressive. Will Meath or Louth will be in the mix after the provincials? Dublin needed this reality check...their younger fans did anyays.
Hopefully we see Mayo grabbing Galway by the scruff of the neck in similar fashion.

J

JoeG says:

April 28, 2025 at 7:09 am

Our defensive unit is not going well. Midfield is underperformed. No attacking plan. Style of play is awful. Kickout strategy is so far a disaster.
As so often happens with me as the game draws near I think despite all the above we'll win. Maigheo Abu!

S

Sean Burke says:

April 28, 2025 at 10:21 am

Anyone else starting to think the provincial championship are a complete waste of energy, there’s no real prize for winning it in the present structure. The draw Wednesday could really put a dampener on the Connacht final . I don’t know why but my enthusiasm has been deflated anyway . Hopefully it’s just the hangover I’m nursing this morning lol

B

Bonni Boyler says:

April 28, 2025 at 10:27 am

@ Sean agree, but tell that to Louth / Meath. Still means something but the prize is pride rather than any advantage bar top seeding in Group. In the good ol' days it meant you were into an all Ireland SF. The draw could mean you are better off losing to gain advantage in the group stages. Its all sorts of wrong.

G

Green&Red says:

April 28, 2025 at 10:42 am

The Ulster Championship is an excellent competition. And it finally looks like there is a level playing field coming in Leinster at long last. Connaught is competitive too. I agree there needs to be more value in it. So for example the provincial winners should be automatically given 2 points for their group games in the round robin or something like that.

In relation to the weekend, whilst I haven’t been impressed by Mayo at all this year, something in my gut is telling me we will get the win. I think all mayo supporters are expecting a big performance. Historically we play our best football when we are underdogs. It really is do or die for the team for this year anyway. If we lose I couldn’t imagine where the players heads will be.

C

catcol says:

April 28, 2025 at 12:06 pm

Had a look again at our league game against Dublin in '22 (have it on the Player, and why not). Jesus, February or something, but we were brilliant. Attitude is everything and we had it in spades. 2-11 to 0-12. Such energy all over the pitch, even though handpassess were there a plenty too. Diarmuid on fire - if he can recover some of that for Sunday, it will be some show. Of course some are gone now: Lee, who wasn't unduly prominent, and Oisín, crikey how we could do with him now. Great goal by Jack Carney to stick it up to the Dubs early on, or should I say early doors.

M

Mind the House says:

April 28, 2025 at 12:49 pm

@Catcol
Diarmuid started that season really strongly playing at 11. The game you mention against the Dubs he would have been our best player. There was a kick pass into Ryan I think who set up Aidan Orme to palm into the net. He also put Carney in for a goal and contributed 0-2 himself that evening.
It still baffles me why we took him away from 11 shortly afterwards and sent him out to the wing where he was nowhere near as effective.
Another positive contributor that evening with Michael Plunkett who scored 0-2. Reason I mention Plunkett is he scored 3 2 pointers for Ballintubber against Westport at the weekend.

C

Chesneychet says:

April 28, 2025 at 1:41 pm

What is the rationale of having the draw before all provincial finals are played. I think the provincials should be scrapped or moved to before the league but we are where we are but hard to understand why the draw needs to be done before they finish.

F

FrostTHammer says:

April 28, 2025 at 1:45 pm

@Chesneychet
The provincial finals are staggered over two weekends.
If the draw was left until afterwards, the teams set to play the Connacht and Munster finalists would have less than a weeks notice.

C

Chesneychet says:

April 28, 2025 at 7:25 pm

Its all part of the rush job, so many matches, no time to take them in and on we go to the next rake of matches. Have to have the pitches free in August for what exactly. They would have a weeks notice of 3 matches coming up, bit inconvenient for the first game maybe but its still a poor call in my opinion.

C

Catcol says:

April 28, 2025 at 7:46 pm

Yes Mind the House, Diarmuid was brilliant that night, and he is a massive plus at no 11. Darren McHale has been improving all year though. Plunkett - we could do with him all right.

S

Southmayo Exile says:

April 28, 2025 at 8:05 pm

McBrien is our best full back as well and we play him now in every position in the backs except full back. No sense to it.
If we had Diarmuid centre forward and NcBrien full back - we'd be a lot stronger.

N

Nephin says:

April 28, 2025 at 10:55 pm

Just watched the Leitrim game back as I couldn’t make confessions on Saturday. We had a clatter of grandkids here when it was on and I thought I might have missed something. But no, just as I thought, Mayo looked really tired and slow. Especially in the first half. Probably were training hard. Secondly, Diarmuid is a great addition and such an intelligent player. Finally, the ref. Ah ye saw it too.
