Mayo Football Podcast: Tyrone preview

Mayo Football Podcast: Tyrone preview

Mayo, with Stephen Rochford now at the helm in Kevin McStay’s enforced absence due to medical issues, head to Omagh tomorrow evening to face Tyrone in a pivotal All-Ireland SFC Group Stage tie. Tyrone are coming into this game at Healy Park off the back of their highly impressive opening round win over Donegal while Mayo are seeking to bounce back from their unexpected home loss to Cavan.

Rob is joined on the pod by Ger Flanagan to preview what will be a first Championship meeting between the counties since the All-Ireland final of 2021. The lads go through both team announcements for the game and discuss what needs to happen from Mayo’s perspective tomorrow evening. They also chat about the contrasting ways both sides are likely to approach this encounter.

This podcast episode is now online and is available to our club members on Patreon. To get access to this show and to all our other great content, for as little as €1 a week, join the club HERE.

The Mayo Football Podcast has partnered with EBS — The Mortgage Masters — this season.

Can't see us beating Tyrone in their backyard. Hope I'm wrong. I don't have faith in Rochford. I would like to see the team play with some passion and self belief. Ever optimistic.

Think our guys will turn up and give a big a reaction after everything that's happened the last 2 weeks on & off the pitch .

Hope they will anyway for Mcstay and for themselves.

It will be close and I think we will just about edge it or even a draw .

We are going into this game with no form .problems all over the field that have been ongoing all through this championship.Tyrone have just had a massive win away to big rivals Donegal and have been installed as all Ireland second favourites.logic can only point to a Tyrone win .we have no idea if there will be a reaction from the players because we don’t the dynamics of what goes on inside the camp and it isn’t a change of management per say. There isn’t any logical case to be made for us winning

Hope they can win for themselves, management team and for our supporters. They need to lift their game after a very poor performance v Cavan.

Hope Kevin is OK and a speedy recovery to him

@1985 .

There is no logical sense obviously.

Though if they come out and give a big reaction who knows . You never know with mayo do you .

Tyrone also might not be able to get up to the same level as they did v Donegal . Though they might not half to .

We've had a 2 week break which will help us .

I'm still going with a Mayo win by 1 point .

Results are all over the place this year in the qualifiers.
Only constant is Kerry winning.
Nobody mentioned Tyrone or Dublin much before the qualifiers started.
It was Kerry, Galway and Donegal.
A week is a long time in football as well as politics.

Clare as I said before that thing of never knowing with mayo relates more so the team of the previous decade .we really haven’t seen that kind of performance levels over the last 3 years.i honestly don’t know if this team has that character or leaders to up the ante at this stage but all will be revealed tomorrow evening

K

King of Ceide says:

May 30, 2025 at 11:44 pm

@1985, Dublin in Croke Park in 21, Kerry in Killarney in 23. Nobody was expecting us to win in either case and there have been plenty unexpected league wins mixed in. I’m not saying we’ll win tomorrow but I won’t be shocked if we do.

I don't think too many predicted Louth being Leinster champions.
Plenty did after the fact alright but not when it mattered.
And Meath beating Dublin too.
So there's precedent there for surprises nearly every year.
But I'm not sure how that translates to us up north tomorrow other than that any team can win any game.
We'll need to be at our best or close to it.
Up Mayo.

King of ceide I think quite a few including myself thought we were in with a good chance against Dublin in 2021 considering Dublins performance in Leinster had clearly dropped that year .in any cast we we were very poor for a lot of that game and Dublin should really have put us away before it got to extra time. They did play well against Kerry which was a complete outlier that year considering performances before and after that.i am just not sure so many issues all over the field can be sorted out in time for what is a big challenge

Amazing this criticism of Rochford. He has presided over Mayo when they took Dublin to a replay in 2016 and lost to Dublin by a point in one of the best All Ireland finals in years in 2017. He took some huge risks, some worked and some didn’t as manager of Mayo but at least he had the liathroidi to take risks. We complain about Mayo managers unwillingness to play risky football but at least he was never going to wonder what if ? He managed Corofin to an All Ireland club title. Of course his detractors point to his time in Donegal and suggest he held them back and then Jimmy took them over and made a brilliant team of them overnight. Now I am a big fan of Jimmy and am an admirer of Donegal, but the truth of the matter is that Donegal have been pretty mediocre all their lives with the exception of. Brian McEniff managed team which brilliantly won an All Ireland in 1992. Other than that they have had a poor history until Jimmy took them over. On the same day as we lost to Longford in 2010, Donegal were absolutely hammered by Armagh. Then Jimmy came along, changed the mind set of the panel and won an AI in 2012. After his departure they ambled along without making much of an impression for years, of which Rochford was involved for just a few. Then Jimmy returned again and two Ulster titles later, Donegal look a force to be reckoned with again. That’s a tribute to Mc Guinness and his ability to get players and indeed the whole county to buy into his theory. Hence the return of Murphy. It’s easy and to a certain extent lazy to compare and contrast Donegal under McGuinness with Donegal when Rochford was involved and he wasn’t even manager. You could make the same comparison / contrast with most other Donegal managers. I think any manager who has won an All Ireland club title and who has taken the greatest ever football team to the wire on 3 occasions within 12 months is deserving of a bit more respect but of course this is Mayo where not winning Sam is seen as failure. Well we have obviously been failing then for 74 years.

She brought her own car when we went to do the shopping this evening. And then we pulled in and parked up in Kinvara and went for, well for me, 2 pints of Guinness and a couple of fizzy drinks for herself, and then returned home. A lovely couple of hours.

This morning or was it yesterday morning, I'm not sure. I watched a beautiful shower of rain where the raindrops dropped straight down from the sky on to the uncut grass. The lawn hasn't been cut, or won't be for the benefit of nature and the wildlife. I don't usually like the rain but this was a beautiful shower.

I watched the Swallows this morning, dive in and out of the sheds, the sheds that I make sure are opened up at least a month before their arrival each year. Some people make sure they have their sheds closed up. " They shit everywhere " they say. " Shit away " I say. I look forward to their arrival every year and always dread the thought of their leaving.

I've often lived Mayo matches in the company of an uncle of mine. A great friend. He always enjoyed the company and I always enjoyed the joy it brought to him when we were going well.

I make the trip now to visit him in hospital any day I am off. From near Kinvara to Ballina and back again in the evening. His days are counting down and I always hope each Sunday when I say goodbye to him that I'll be there to see him again the following weekend. That he'll be in it.

He was 17 the last time Mayo won Sam. We have shared and cheered alot of the matches since, but I like the rest of us am still waiting for the Cup to be lifted.

Football means everything and football means nothing. I hope we win tomorrow and I might get to see it if I'm back home early enough, but I'll have my own All Ireland final in the morning when I see my uncle and give him a kiss and shake his hand when I see him.

I'm no different from anyone else. We all have times in our lives where life takes over. Where the important things in our lives are organised for us whether we wanted them organised or not. That's life and that's what's most important.

Enjoy the game and I hope we can put in a good performance. Not for the likes of myself but for the people that mean the most to us.

The players want to win for us the supporters, and their families, and alot of the supporters want us to win for the joy it puts on the faces of the people who are dear to us. In a strange way no one is winning for themselves. It's the beauty of human nature.

I'm intrigued to see how we fare this evening. Time for the players to buck up big time. Some of their performances are unacceptable. Some just have the wrong attitude in my view. I've little sympathy for them.

Hope Kevin is doing well. A true gent.

I certainly would have no agenda where Stephen rochford is concerned.i would think people are making a comparison with how Donegal played while he was coach there and how mayo have played over the last 3 seasons. We will find out this evening I suppose. There we’re gambles taken in 2016/17 .The Alan Dillon role against Tyrone worked to a degree. The goalkeeper switch backfired spectacularly. The Aidan o Shea switch to full back didn’t really work at all the first day and we just about got the draw that day but it was effective in the replay. As for Donegal going off the radar for long periods between all Irelands well I would gladly take that before losing 11 finals in a row.Anyway we are all looking for the same thing.winning an all Ireland in any fashion would do me .Good luck to the lads this evening.in any circumstances this would be a very difficult challenge

I have a spare ticket for today's match free to a good home.

Best of luck to Mayo today. In years gone by a big championship game against Tyrone was always an event to look forward to. We had great wins against them in 2013 and 2016. Even in 2004 when we knocked them off their perch it was a brilliant game. A lot has happened since. Even with the new rules will we get anything as close to that level of quality?

It's been a horrible couple of weeks for Mayo GAA with all that's happened on and off the field. I hope today the players will bring a performance that will focus the attention on where it should always be - the pitch. Ultimately it's all in their hands. Up Mayo!

Needed to be pointed out 'To Win Just Once'. Rochford brought us within a whisker of wining an All Ireland. Had a clear rationale for the change of keeper, unfortunately just did not work out for the lad on the day. He went on to prove he was a top class keeper. We were so well set up in 2017. All the talk was how to deal with Cluctons kick outs and he could not get any of those away. We had Dublin on the rack, down to 14 men and lost the game due to a moment of madness on the pitch.
