Mayo’s Minor footballers came out on top in this afternoon’s All-Ireland MFC quarter-final against Offaly. The match at Dr Hyde Park finished 3-13 to 4-7 in favour of Mayo who now advance to an All-Ireland semi-final meeting with Kerry.
In this Final Whistle pod recorded at the match venue, Rob gets the post-game thoughts of Mayo’s joint manager David Heaney. He also discusses how the game was won and lost with Roscommon-based GAA journalist and Offaly native, Kevin Egan.

Brilliant contribution from Kevin Egan on the pod. Sounded like a rock of common sense with some sound advice for Mayo going forward despite his obvious disappointment after today's result.

Always have a soft spot for Offaly people, probably because of my admiration for Willie Bryan the great midfielder from the 70s .

Same Nephin, I think it's because Sean Lowry lived around these parts for a bit!

To continue the Offaly love-in, they're probably the team I would hate for us to beat in an All-Ireland final.
Many years ago, during a pub lock-in somewhere in north Mayo, a few of us came up with a list of teams we would hate to have to beat to win Sam.
After many pints, we had our list down to Offaly, Clare, Down, Cavan and Donegal.
I actually have a massive soft spot for Laois too but I was vetoed on that one because one of my friends fell in love with and was dumped by a girl from Portlaoise in the early 1990s.
As you can imagine, this conversation was very intelligent. But my main point was that Offaly topped all our lists. They love their football and always played a beautiful brand. Their passion always comes across at games, on and off the pitch.
Up Mayo!

Of course Ann-Marie. I remember Sean handing Kevin McStay an All Star on a plate in the drawn semifinal in 85. Always thought it was a huge mistake to drop him for the replay. A man that knew how to win big games.

Actually think Sean Lowry had a big part to play in our 1985 revival.....just gave Mayo people a bit of belife that we were good enough after the Darren years

FreeTheEastBank.
You’re right. I remember reading that he said in the dressing room that he thought the team were good enough to win an All Ireland. That surely gave the lads a big boost.

@Sam og...almost correct report there, actually Mayo were beaten twice, both in very dramatic circumstances in the championship in Dr Hyde Park in 2001. A last minute goal sealed our defeat to the Rossies in the Connacht Final, but a one point defeat to Westmeath, after extra time in the backdoor was our last defeat at the Roscommon venue a few weeks later on. We have won every single match we have played at the venue since then, bar the draw with Dublin which we should have won last year.

@Waiting For Sam. Did any of ye pick mayo because God knows we beat ourselves in a couple of all irelands in the previous decade.

To add to the list of sound counties here, have always had a soft spot for Monaghan and Cavan, generally sound folk in my experience. Would have a soft spot for the Gaels of Ulster generally, given some of the nonsense they have to put up with.
Also Louth, who seem to be on the verge of great things at the moment.

I don’t know is there any county I’d hate Mayo to beat to win Sam!
On the flip side, I find it awfully hard to get away from the teams that bet us in All Ireland’s and have any gra for them. The more heartbreaking a defeat, the more bitterness I have
The 1st All Ireland I remember Mayo losing was Meath in 1996. I still can’t say I’ve any love for Meath since that, such was the heartbreak. Even the lovely Donegal! Another team I don’t want to see succeed!
I’m running out of counties I’d be happy to see win Sam if it wasn’t Mayo!

Yes love Monaghan people. If ye are ever near Newbliss stop at Larmour butchers for the sausages. The butcher there is obsessed with sausages and everyone I shared them to were positively shocked at how good they were.

Have to say that I love the Tyrone gang. Some of the nicest people I've ever met. They actually seemed embarrassed to celebrate at croker in 21!

I’ve said it for years. Offaly people are sound. Actually, Midlands people are sound. And I think if counties were twinned, Mayo & Offaly would be highly compatible. (And Sean Lowry would be highly amused at this conversation).
Well done to the Minors.
