As the countdown continues to the start of the Mayo club championships, Mike sits down with two of the best (and best-known) referees in the county.
John Glavey from Aghamore and Paul Lydon from Kiltimagh are regarded as two of the most consistent and well-respected officials in both Mayo and Connacht, so who better to give an insight into the world of a modern-day GAA referee.
The lads chat about everything from why they do it to the challenges it presents to the opportunities it has given them over the years.

That was an absolutely superb pod. A very interesting perspective to get from the two referees. A read of the rules is certainly in order.
The Conor Lane incident was interesting, might have been best served if at the time it was addressed as hands up we made a mistake and explain what happened. I don’t recall that happening which might well have helped.
The two lads though were excellent on the pod, they hammer home that they are human and don’t see everything, it’s not intentional to not apply the rules. Looked at the official guide, 122 pages with both hurling and football included…a new perspective for when listening to the pub talkers.

Great podcast. I think they could help make the refs life easier with a simple thing like a clear signal when black carding a player for abuse language. Maybe hold up the black with his arms crossed. At least then the spectators realise it’s their own players fault and not be giving the ref grief because we can’t understand what the card is for.
I would have liked if the lads were asked for an opinion on the likes of the Bastic pickup at the end of one final, more than likely it would be that he can’t see everything. But especially Limerick in 14. Where the ref appeared to see nothing.
