In the latest episode in our ‘We Need to Talk About Mayo’ series, Rob and Edwin chat with former Mayo player and, more recently, co-manager of the Mayo minors, Tom Reilly.
From his decades of involvement in the football scene within the county and, in particular, his just-concluded term as co-manager, along with David Heaney, of the Mayo minors, Tom has an innate knowledge of the journey young players go on. In this episode, he chats with Rob and Ed about the challenges players face as they progress through the age groups. Tom also discusses the areas in which there’s room for improvement in Mayo, including in relation to facilities.

Any good Samaritan out there know the dates for the intermediate and senior 1/4, semi final, and finals ?
And yes, I did check the Mayo Gaa website, forensically !
Do I take it that the games will keep coming every 2 weeks from here on in to the end ?
Unfortunately, some poor sods out there gotta work weekends, so it would be great to know which days to ( try) and book off, for further down the line .

Super line up.of matches and really looking forward to it weather's ideal, football within the county is played correctly with emphasis on attacking, so let's see what the potential forwards can do as 5 of the 6 positions on county team still have to be open .
The tv games alone Cbar v Breaffy , not the battle of old but still should be a good one .
Ardnaree v Robe should be highly entertaining and free scoring.
Cross v Ballina again a big battle in the olden days and whilst there will be thunderstone shoulders around the middle , the focus will be on fast football.
Great games in store.
Missed the conversation on the old boys but at this stage we need to pick real, inside forwards, so ya if Cillian or Evan are on fire they are worthy of their chance as is the young guys if they prove themselves .
So sit back and enjoy the games all very tight to call and only be guess work, which also adds to it

Think Andy has to bring in all 3 of Evan Regan, Aidan Orme and Darragh Beirne in December. We have to nail down a left footed free taker and our best number 13.We cant be relying on ROD or Cillian taking on frees not suited to a right footer. Is there any other good left footed fowards. If I had to play Kerry in the morning I would probably go with a FF line of Regan, Cillian and ROD.

What age is Regan?
Maybe the new game suits him.
Has he got pace?

The best pod yet. Haven’t time now to fully comment but this is a pod that everyone should tune in to and the reality is, the content needs action. Some of saying for years about Tyrone and the fundraising model employed by them. Mayo have such potential. It’s just never been tapped into and let’s be frank here, that’s the biggest failure of successive Mayo GAA leaderships. Very clear listening to Tom and Keith that a separate body needs to be established by Mayo GAA and in conjunction with them to manage “Mayo Football” and leave the large body of work that falls under the umbrella of “Football in Mayo” to the county board
Excellent pod. I liked how as it progressed Tom, while naturally cautious, essentially said Mayo won’t win unless there’s change. We are miles behind Tyrone and others. We have all the necessary ingredients to be at the top but need leadership.

Orme is mentioned a lot. I followed several of the Knockmore games last year and I didn’t see anything from him that would make me say this lad is someone who can make much impact at intercounty level. I remember him missing a very close range free that’d be bread and butter to most IC forwards. Im just calling it as I see it and I’m open to being proven incorrect. I’m really looking forward to following his performance (and others) over the weekend.
CDR says:

Yes I agree on Regan and Beirne being called up as well as Cian McHale. Don’t think Orme is as good a free taker or offers as much from play as the other 3. Is Beirne still u20 next year as I’m pretty sure Tom Lydon is.
Sam og says:
August 22, 2025 at 2:51 pm
Well for theCounty Final in which Knockmore were beating well, with limited ball I thought he gave Sam Callinan a hard time in the corner , the only one that brought fight for Knockmore in that 2nd half.
I can remember him playing really well against Armagh in the League in 2022 https://www.mft.ie/aiden-orme-is-our-motm-from-yesterdays-game/
Horan seemed to have good time for him in the 2022 season, but Rochford and McStay didnt and chose to play 2 veterans Doherty and McLoughlin before him in 2023 championship which didnt go down well and he opted out then.

@CDR: Yeah. Beirne & Lydon both underage for u20 again. Both likely picking up their results today, so best of luck to all the folks in that boat.
Colm Meaney, James Lavelle, Eoin McGreal, Yousif Coghill, Aaron Coggins, Rio Mortimer, Colm Lynch, Dara Neary, Sean Walsh, Daithí Butler (eligible again in '27), Josh Carey, Senan Guilfoyle, Darragh Beirne & Tom Lydon would all still be eligible from last years squad.
@Jr: He was u21 in '14, so would have just turned (or just about to turn) 32 at most this year.
Wouldn't have pace to burn folks in a race from the 45, but he's not slow and with the first few yards in the head he's got enough of a head start to cause man-markers (plenty of who excel at inter-county level) plenty of headaches around the 20. A bit like Andy back in the day, not blessed with pace but uses what he has well. Never looked out of place at county and between the new rules and his own increased experience (I don't think there's any question he's a better player now than he was back in '19) he's certainly one in plenty of conversations. Even before his 2-4-1 in R1.

Aidan Orme made centre forward on team of the year for the blog last year as picked by Colm Boyle
https://www.mft.ie/club-stars-team-of-the-year-the-nominees/
Yet you reckoned he isnt good enough.Gave Enda Hession a hard time in the quarters from what I remember and Sam Callinan plenty of it in a Final were Knockmore were well beaten.Very few forwards in Mayo with the skill level of Orme.
Westport and Lee Keegan will be a good judge of where hes at the weekend .Made team of the week for 1st round games too.

Mayo need forwards that are able to kick with both feet and able to kick 2 pointers i watched some club minor games over the last few weeks and watched some lovely young forwards kicking 2 pointers at ease there is a lad there in shrule Stephen heneghan he scored 2 goals and 9 points against aughamor with both feet how are these young lads not getting a look in mayo it's absolutely crazy they need to stop the favoritism in mayo and pick the best players not the lads with a name of ex players.

@Noel Hughes
No minor football is physically able for Senior intercounty football.
Most U20's who play senior county end up playing
U20 club, senior club and schools/sigerson also.
That's 4 teams, often two matches a week and a bucket load of S&C training, followed by ACL/groin injuries and operations at some point, shortening their prime year's from 10/12 to 5/6.
Worse still is a guy who played minor club, minor county, schools and senior club - doing adult training loads on a body that isn't fully grown.
If there is a great minor player playing in Mayo (and the county is full of former great minor who could have been great but weren't), let him play minor and a bit of U20's and enjoy it. There is another 15/17 years of football ahead of him and no need to rush him up the line. That line is full of lads who were great minors who were brought up to senior county too soon, weren't physically able for it and were discarded for 3 years because the coach at the time didn't fancy them. They get left off the S&C programme when they actually need it most (20-23) and never get back in.
Give the minor lads time to grow up and build the sort of mental resilience needed to become an intercounty player too soon.
Handing them opportunities too early doesn't build their own mental resolve to fight for the jersey, as like anything in life, you appreciate the things who had to work for, rather than the things that got handed to you without putting in the work.
Even Clifford dint play senior county and minor and he was playing county minor for 3 years and looked like a grown man v boys in his last year.
In Cliffords case, Kerry had the good sense to stop him playing U20's altogether so as to protect the player with the plan to get 12 years out of him. He hasn't had a major injury yet.
Cillian O Connor had already had surgery by Clifford age and both O Connor brothers have lost the last 3/4 years to injury. One injury can be unlucky, multiple injuries is often down to player overload.

@tirawleybaron: "Kerry had the good sense to stop him playing U20’s altogether...".
Nahhh. The rules at the time meant you could progress from u20 to Senior once the u20 Championship had finished but you couldn't go from Senior back to u20.
No decision or protection by the County involved, just the national rules at the time. The same ones counties (with Clifford often the poster boy of the argument at the time) fought so hard to change.

Even if it was the rules that forced it, it’s worked out well for Kerry.
If Beirne or others are good enough for Senior then I would seriously consider not letting them play under 20.
However I think the smarter option is let the younger lads have another U20 season bearing in mind they’ll be playing freshers and/or Sigerson. and give them some exposure and good S&C on the development squad. Their day will come in a year if good enough.
On Reagan, I see as similar to Towey and Boland. May have some good S&C done to compete at IC but not big lads compared to most of their markers. That said they’re all capable of doing what Geaney did in the AI final with good supply like he had. Towey possibly the quickest of the 3 but is a right footer. Regan seems to have done enough for a few years going by posters here to warrant another look. What we’re looking for is a Darren McCurry and even he has off days where markers keep him quiet. Beirne is nearly fully developed but what better motivation for fringe starters than to see a young buck coming round the corner in a year. Hurley seems no longer be U20 so he could be worth a call and definitely should be in the development squad.

The Claremorris lads struggled at senior club championship level, can't see how they're ready for intercounty.
