Has there been any word on trials been held for Mayo Senior panel since most of the club action has been wrapped up.Last proper trials were held by Horan.
https://midwestradio.ie/index.php/sport/27354-mayo-manager-james-horan-confirms-he-has-had-over-100-players-from-44-clubs-involved-in-trial-games
Dont think you can judge a player solely on club action very hard standout on a weaker club team than a club going well and the scouting of players by Kevin hasnt been great, he has found no new players since Horan left in 2021.
Norm says:

Well Sam og, I think mc stay knows who the best players around are, trials a waste of time.. Like we know the best players from each club.. Won't be a huge player found.. Young lads like mchale from Moy D and maheady from cross are good prospects.. But like they're young yet. If Evan Regan is still the best club forward in mayo as I've heard people say, then it doesn't bode well.
Sam og says:
November 1, 2024 at 6:06 pm
If trials are such a waste of time, Lee Keegan, Robbie Hennelly, Jason Gibbons,James Burke, Cillian O'Connor, and Jason Doherty all came off the back of trials with Horan in 2010 while never been involved with John O'Mahony before that and Evan Regan isnt the best forward in the club game ,he got 1 goal from play last week a great goal but that was his only score from play.from the games I watched Darragh Beirne of Claremorris is probably the best forward in Mayo club football at the moment considering his age and the club he was playing with.

Totally agree Sam og, the talent is in the u20s and we should be protecting them from being in too deep. John McMonagle will be only u20 who plays for mayo next year and that's because he is a prodigious talent as a defender
TsuDhoNim says:

@Norm: Did you watch many/any of the games this year?
If you asked everyone on the blog (or everyone on the Mayo management ticket) to name 16 odd panel selections for the middle 8 positions I'm not sure any 2 of us would settle on the same list.
M Murray, Cullen, Slattery, P Ruttledge, Carter, Ivers, O McLaughlin, N Moran, Howard, Gilrane, L Doherty & R Murray are all fighting for a handful of spots among the lads who were in and around the panel in the last year or two and the lads pushing up from 20s (Morahan, Dawson, Melvin, O'Flaherty & F McLaughlin - not to mention some still u20s next year like McMonagle pushing too).
Not sure how anyone could suggest there's nothing to be gained from a trail (where the conditions can be set for a relatively even playing field, removing club tactics or teammates from the equation) when there's so little to pick between so many players (many of whom have the potential to go on to have a breakout campaign like Donnacha McHugh this year).
Sam og says:
November 1, 2024 at 7:34 pm
Who back in 2011 thought Jason Doherty was better than Aidan Kilcoyne, or Jason Gibbons better than Pat Harte, or even Lee Keegan better than Trevor Howley yet Horan dropped the 3 of them and the 3 others went on to be come established names.
No one outside the current County panel will be deemed good enough until they get a fair chance and given time to settle. To say theres no out there is very lazy and knows very little about Mayo football.Horan had great eyes for identifying talent but his downfall was playing some of the best players out of position to fit them all in like Oisin and Leeroy and O'Hora in the full back line in 2021 final and all of them half backs.
Clare says:

No harm in doing a trials there are definetly some up and coming young talent out there in the county. Trials are there for a reason to give every young player a chance to show what they are worth.
@Retrocut agree the talent is under 20s some great young guys there.

Meath are having divisional teams playing the new rules.
Played in previous years as trials underO Rourke.
A PR exercise. A way of showing they are looking at all players.
I understand that they are struggling to make up teams.
If the management don't know the players in the county they should walk.
I am confident they are aware of all suitable players.

Most club players haven't played or trained for at least 4 weeks. These lads coming into trials- they cannot do themselves justice.
I would like to see thirty players brought in for an 8 week period and get them up to a certain level of fitness. Monitor their development and have them playing games every weekend and collective training during the week. Hopefully from that 6-8 players will show enough potential to be brought into the senior panel from the start of next year.
To me just inviting in players for a trial game with no collective training and their fitness gone back would be unfair. Give them a decent chance.

An alternative Mayo team based on the finals alone would see a fantastic B team as such, ok some are retired etc but bar Clarke and Mchale it's a pretty young vibrant team and shows the depth of talent that is there so all in I'd be very positive and the release of the rules to see football be played again can only be positive for teams like mayo who play off the cuff.
.........Clarke
Golden...Mchale....Tighe
Diarmuid Coggins...King....Niall Coggins
.........Irwin....Murray
Ruttledge...Finaun Duffy...Feeney
Maheady...Healy.....McHale
Leftout Regan and Orme but still tight fullforward line .
Know Connell Dempsey is fine footballer when fit too aswell as big man Luke Feeney and his Mcshane of Tyrone skillset.
But like Golden and Tighe two super tight markers but also ballers who can play on front or mo fear of high ball.
The Coggins are like Peader Gardiners reincarnated, OK they play halfforwards but equally as comfortable in halfbacks .
Murray and Irwin are rock solid.club players.
Ruttledge, Duffy are fantastic club players ans did well underage, Feeney a great addition to ballina.
Maheady, Healy and Mchale it's only a matter of time before they done the green ans red but all three are super natural players so hope they don't loose that

There is no FBD, and by league it's likely to late nearly.
What people want see is lads brought in early on programmes and training and see how they go.
Ringing up lads week of the FBD game and asking if they will fulfill the fixture for ya is not fair on them.

Very scrappy error ridden 1st half in the Intermediate replay. If last week was an exhibition of long range shooting, tonight is the opposite. Shots being ballooned into the sky and several dropping short. BMD definitely the livelier in the opening 15 and should have been 6/7 ahead had Reape buried what was a great goal chance, but Crossmolina have come back into it and are clawing their way back.
Poor game so far. Enjoyable, but the standard isn’t good
What on earth the Cross keeper was doing punching the ball clear from a Cian McHale free that dropped short. You have to catch that ball. No BMD player was competing with him and his punch went straight to an attacker who tapped it over.
It’s a fiery game. There’s an edge to it. Looking forward to hopefully some better quality stuff 2nd half.

Conor Loftus seems to have bulked up to.
Well done to crossmolina you could see how much it meant to Jordan flynn there.
Thought Moy Davitts had it but cross fought back espcially Loftus.
Mayonaze says:
November 2, 2024 at 7:50 pm
Crossmolina deserved that win. They won because they had more leaders on the pitch and they were stronger in midfield. Flynn who was average enough first half, burst into life after HT and caught two great high balls (would like to see much more if that for Mayo) and when he went off Loftus and Maheady both stepped up to the plate. Loftus drove all day at BMD and while he mixed the very good with the poor, you must commend his willpower and effort. Maheady, too had a mediocre first half but when the game was in the melting pot he kicked a few beauts. Over the two games Crossmolina we’re definitely the better team.
I cannot understand why BMD took Ronan Clarke off after only 7 mins of the 2nd half. He wasn’t having a stormer, but no I’m on the pitch was at that time and he wriggled his way to kick a superb score in the first half. He was a threat to Cross and his removal negatively impacted on BMD’s chances of success. Their much vaunted attack never got going. Reape was in and out of it and McHale showed again that he has a terrific left peg abut no one else showed much at all and Reid never got going which was disappointing. You could see his frustration. He gave the ball away deep in the 2nd half and tried to blame Reape for not giving him an angle.
What to do with Conor Loftus. I don’t think he has the natural defensive instincts to be in the back 6 at intercounty level. He carried the ball well and seems to much prefer playing with his face to goal as opposed to an inside forward. He’s not prolific enough a scorer but can chip in on occasion. A wing forward really, for me. But a starter for Mayo? I’m not so sure.
Cian McHale, superb left foot. Does he have the ability to create the space required at the top level? Has he that burst of pace? Time will tell.
Darragh Syron is 20. Was he on the Mayo 20’s last season? He’s a big unit

Hard luck to BMD's they've some fine players too and could have snatched it but as a neutral I feel Cross have a harder edge to them to represent us from here.
Best of luck to them going forward.

Conor Reid having a noticably poor game for the second final in a row.
Started for mayo in the league but hasn't shown any reason why as yet.
Flynn goes off with 15 to go, 2 points up, and I think he had 3 turnovers in a row, including one that he went crazy at Brian reape for, Moy Davitts best and most respected player.
Reid then threw the toys out of the pram and didn't run back to defend and as a result crossmolina scored.
He'll have better days, and he would want to, but is at the minute just another player Kevin mcstay and Rochford have brought into the county panel who are simply miles off senior intercounty level.
FreeTheEastBank says:
November 2, 2024 at 8:42 pm
I don't think there is any way Conor Loftus can be a centerback for Mayo. The lad is not a defender and a county guy can get away in any position at intermediate club level but not in a County Jersey in the likes of Croke Park if we get there.
He definetly is a fine player but he is a half forward all day long and if he is in his best position his confidence will grow and he can lead.
Conor Reid can develop into a Mayo player as well if he wants it.It takes years to develop an intercounty player we forget that.....it's not the 70's anymore
