It will be important this year to identify a few players from the club scene that might make the transition to the Country team or are they already identified in the under 20's.

Very interesting finish up to the leagues in particular Div 1A. Unusual to see 3 senior teams at the bottom of the league and 2 intermediate teams in the top 5. Ballinrobe and Parke will be very happy with their league as to will Davitts. Shows how competitive the intermediate championship will be. Moy Davitts also with an impressive league run. For senior club championship hard to see outside Castlebar, Ballina Westport and Knockmore. Castlebar look to be setting the pace thus far

Although we have to wait for senior club championship, I'd hugely recommend people get out to support the minor club championship. Round two takes place tonight and a mouth watering clash between last year's finalists Claremorris and Castlebar Mitchels.
Both teams have an embarrassment of riches in terms of players coming through.
Claremorris will field Mayo u20s from this year with Rio Mortimer and Darragh Beirne, while Mark Noonan and David Hurley wore 6 and 5 respectively for the Mayo u17s. Midfielder Craig Cassidy is pushing for a start for the senior team, still can't be explained to me how he hasn't played any underage football for the green and red, he will have a huge battle with Shane Cunningham around the middle of the field.
Mitchels won this u17 title last year and are absolutely stacked, backbones by a St.Geralds team who won the Connacht A Schools title. The likes of the O'Reillys, the Forrys, Ryan Gibbons, Cian Walsh and Paddy Flannelly will all be very strong for the level.
Mitchels overcame a huge test from Crossmolina last week while Claremorris beat Balla out the gate in Nally Park.
It should be a free flowing game, underage football is always a good tonic compared to the drab affairs we often get at senior level.
Claremorris GAA at 7pm for whoever's interested.
Amazingly Knockmore and Ballina are in B championship this year, a bizarre one.

Living in Clare this last 20 years. Was at the hurling finals on Sunday and attended the homecoming last night. Unbelievable experience.. The energy and the noise and the madness associated with becoming champions is something you’d want to experience every year. In Mayo we’ve experienced the savage disappointment so often I wonder have we become too used to it. To win just once isn’t enough for the successful counties. That’s aiming too low. They know what winning is like and they’ll do everything they can to hit those highs.

Retrocut, I’m really sorry I missed your post. I’d have loved to have gone to those minor games. I’m really interested in underage and looking at potential and future prospects etc. I thought the minor club championship was still under 18? Correct me if I’m wrong but is there a u17 and also an u18 championship? Claremorris walloped cbar in a final in 2023?

I’d love to get your post match reports and who played well. Obviously fully aware that lads at 17 are still boys and that phase from 17 through to 20 is massively important. In fact, I’d say it’s the most crucial few years in any aspiring footballers development. All kinds of things can impede and prevent talented 16/17 year olds from fulfilling their potential…hormones, alcohol/partying, love life, injuries and even complacent too. Sometimes, bucks who sail through underage, being best or standout, take things for granted and fail to really put in the effort required. Adult and even u20 intercounty football is worlds apart from minor.

I don’t live in the county hence my lack of awareness that these games were on but I’d have travelled to see these.

@retrocut, excellent point. Looking at the scores in the Minor championship, they are very high-scoring. I was away in Achill on holidays and spotted a game down in the pitch between Belmullet and Louisburgh. I believe it was the C or D championship: to say the standard of football shocked me was an understatement.
Fast moving, direct football. As a neutral, it was the best game I've watched all year.
Belmullet number 15, the baker Eoin O'Donoghues brother, was excellent, along with number 9, whose name I cannot recall. For Louisburgh, blonde-haired number 11 Tommy, something was scintillating to watch.

Kudos to my own club St.Jarlaths on beating Westport in the A championship.

Will be trying to fit the Tuesday night Minor games into the schedule from now on

The game was a classic, with Mitchels running out 3 point winners, scoring 4-11. Claremorris scored 1-17 and will be extremely frustrated at conceding 4 poor goals.
Darragh Beirne was absolutely outstanding, kicking 1-12, with only one free and no wides, and some of the scores he kicked from all angles of both feet from all sorts of range were simply incredible. I know he's only 17/18 but we simply have no one on the current mayo panel with his class or skill off his left boot.
The two forrys were outstanding, Gavin with the goal but Joe with lovely scores.
Only round robin so if Claremorris get over the line next week against Kobe, Oisin Deane, Flynn and Crossmolina, you'd imagine it'll be another minor final between Claremorris and Mitchels.
Re the age grade, minor as of last year is u18. Claremorris hammered Mitchels by a scoreline of 3-14 to 6 points in last year's final.
In fairness last year's Claremorris team had 8 lads who played either u20 or minor for mayo this year so that team was a simply outstanding, golden generation. Claremorris retained keeper Evan Campbell, Rio Mortimer, David Hurley, Mark Noonan, Craig Cassidy, Sean O'Connell, James Sullivan and Darragh Beirne from that team, who all started in the final. Moving on where the two Hurley twins, Niall and Dara, who were mayo u20s but also David Slattery, who started for the mayo u20s this year, and Paul Gilmore, likewise.
Castlebar retained nearly all of that same side, apart from John McMonagle and Caylum Filan.
In order to decide which teams were playing in championship this year, a few weeks after last year's final the county launched a "grading league", a mini championship to decide who would be playing at what level for this year.
Castlebar faced off against Claremorris only weeks after that final was played and Castlebar won by about 20 points.
That also went to provincial level, and Castlebar beat Tuam Stars in the final by 10 points.
Claremorris have came on very strongly since then and were probably the better side but Mitchels that bit more clinical.
Both sides absolutely outstanding young teams who would probably be as strong as any minor teams in the country at the minute.

@Retrocut, that’s interesting thanks for that. Let’s hope these lads continue to improve because we’ve all seen class 17/18 year olds look very to ‘make it’ and for a variety of reasons, don’t. 19/20 are hugely important transition years. It’s only when a lad is 20 and going really well where you can say with any degree of confidence that they’ll make it to senior. Obviously I’m talking intercounty level.

@Retrocut great match report, was at it and agree one of best minor games in years in fairness for open football the way it should be played. Don’t forget minor league winners Westport despite losing to an impressive Jarlath’s side could also have a big say. Depending on next weeks results we could have 2 local derbies in the semis with Claremorris going out to Brickens and Westport heading into Castlebar for a league final rematch …..let’s see what happens . Maybe Crossmolina or the Neale will have other ideas ….on the senior championship agree Westport, Ballina, Knockmore, Ballintubber and the Mitchels are the front runners with Charlestown, Belmullet and Garrymore causing upsets along the way. Claremorris will be full of youth and talent but a couple of years early to make a serious challenge and Aghamore may be the suprise package in my view.

Re next week, Claremorris and Crossmolina playing in Swinford on Tuesday at 7pm.
Game well set on player, with plenty of excellence on display.
Kobe will probably be man marked by fellow mayo minor Mark Noonan at centre forward, while Dave Hurley will take Dylan Flynn at wing forward, and then Rio Mortimer will be on Oisin Deane.
Craig Cassidy will have a huge battle with Moyles in midfield.
I have named 8 footballers, who are all absolutely top class players. You have to treat this grade with the utmost of respect, it really provides unbelievable stuff.
However, I have not named the best player who will be there, who is simply a class above any player his age.
Crossmolina should not have any answer for Darragh Beirne. You would expect Beirne to put up a cricket score unless Crossmolina park it up.
This could swing it.
Claremorris would then go over to brickens in 10 days, and what an occasion that would be.

Oisins Deane is the man that makes Crossmolina tick. I'd expect Claremorris to win relatively comfortably as they have a far more rounded team.
