Club odds are great value as bookies don't really have huge scope on the set ups. If recall Knockmore were about 5th favourites year after they won it.
Similarly Balla handicap of 14 PTS v Westport and Ballaghadereen 6 v Knockmore in round 1 this year were excellent value.

Breaffy finalists 5 times in last 10 years, 8/1 even each way great value.

G

Green&Red says:

I understand people getting excited about Breffey but they have yet to play a top top team since Deane took over. At the moment Ballina and Westport are those two teams. Knockmore seem to be destroyed with injuries but strangely if they played each other now I’d back Knockmore. Castlebar have not been at the races at all which is surprising considering how well they performed in the league. Tubber are no longer the team they once were.

Sad to hear of the passing of another great Gael with the untimely death of Padraig Monaghan who might be known to some of our Dublin based contributors for his long association with St.Judes in particular, where he enjoyed plenty of coaching success.
Before that Padraig enjoyed success with his native Garrymore, when they were regularly winning county titles and even getting to All-Irelands.
He played with UCG, winning a sigerson, and with St. Colman's college Claremorris, winning Mayo's only ever Hogan cup in '77 I believe.

Looking at some of the tributes from ex and current Judes players who went on to win , multiple all Irelands with Dublin, they give Padraic great credit for developing their careers as they rose through the ranks.
Another gone too soon.

@ Gizmo more going my own recollection of the Pole at the start of championship, Think Breaffy got 5% of the vote.
Even though they were finalists last year, think it was viewed as a fluke rather than building towards a Moclair.
Great to see the standard has improved in general and hopefully that seeps into the County setup.

Sounds like change to the Mayo management, either coaches/selectors to be changed or McStay though the latter has gentlemans agreement for 4 years and has only done two years so far.

G

Glorydays says:

September 5, 2024 at 6:27 pm

An Oasis concert or two in McHale park would get the ball rolling on the debt. The two boys are practically Mayo men so its not beyond the bounds of possibilty. Would be better than putting round the biscuit tin in a pub in New York as many of us witnessed during our trips in 14 and 19

S

Sean Burke says:

September 5, 2024 at 6:31 pm

Perhaps it wasn’t such a good idea to have so many personalities in there to begin with . Whatever notion they had going over to bring that canny lad in also from Galway (rochfords pal ) , total overkill

S

Sean Burke says:

September 5, 2024 at 6:34 pm

Won’t happen anyway for several reasons glory days in reality , wouldn’t be up to standard for a modern concert but Shur the residents of Mchale rd would kick up anyway .

I see another bit of bad news day rolling out over no chairman on the fundraising committee since February. Maybe that was the reason we didn’t even have a biscuit tin this time round beyond in Merica . Lol

Wouldn’t you love be to be a fly on the wall when they carried out these interviews 2 years ago on management selection. Just to get an understanding of how “detailed” the process actually was. The amount of people this blog, around the county and country that could see there was to many big personalities and old faces, it amazes me how our CB chairman didn’t see it.

As for Malachy O’Rourke, one of the best managers in the country and would have loved to see him on the line as Mayo manager. An inspired Tyrone team with great underage talent will be one he’ll of a threat over the next few years. A real county would have cut their cloth to suit after the Derry game and gone for him. Gentleman’s agreement or not.

Anyway I’m sure we can wait another few weeks/months to see how the review goes. God forbid we ever consider doing a review of our reviews

C

Clare says:

September 5, 2024 at 6:53 pm

Ah not looking great for mcstay.. Was a crap year to be fair for mayo gaa in general a change is needed in general in what way I don't know I'd feel bad for mcstay but there was definetly to many big head names in that management team he's a shrewd manager but to many voices at once there was a reason why Liam mchale left in the first place sure. Be interesting to see what happens say it'll be dragged out as per usual with CB..

Tyrone will be a force to be reckoned with next year I'd say espcially with a new manager boost and their under age talent coming though.

C

Culmore says:

September 5, 2024 at 7:22 pm

It doesnt really matter who the manager is, if the players dont give it 100% in both training and on the field. I for one dont think our players have given it everything over the years when we were very close but failed to win Sam. Most of our recent manager did make major mistakes with team selection /tactics/subsitutions etc but many of the players also more interested in media interviews and social media and photographs than giving everything on the field. Why not for next year leave all media and social media to the County P.R.O and let Manager and Players keep to themselves and keep their mouths closed till Sam in the County.

R

Rober says:

September 5, 2024 at 7:26 pm

Culmore, that's what's happening at the moment. The camp is a sealed unit.

C

Clare says:

September 5, 2024 at 7:37 pm

@culmore it's hard cause no matter what mayo will be in the media good or bad just the way it is sadly. Even if players don't give interviews to media the media still finds a way to mention us even when we have been knocked out for a good while.

P

Pod Fan says:

September 5, 2024 at 8:16 pm

Media will have a field day now. Nothing to write about and the utterances of two men at a county board meeting will turn into fact and the story. Hard to see how McStay won't just tell them to feck it and walk away. Player unrest ended in that outcome in Roscommon

G

Gizmobobs says:

September 5, 2024 at 8:23 pm

Pod fan, some people say lightening doesn't strike twice....
The spiel in the article about the unknown, assessor is great craic. No one seems know who it is, maybe the assessor doesn't know it's themselves that's doing it. Might explain the delay.

C

Clare says:

September 5, 2024 at 8:52 pm

Media always have a field day with mayo anyways.

@Gizmobobs that's a good point.

We all knew something wasn't right in the mayo set up but I hope mcstay gets anofher chance but with changes to backroom team 100% I mean if they were to say enough is enough with current management who would we get??

I'm just thinking to donegal this year Mcguiness got them to a semi 1st year back in charge I was one to doubt him but fair play to him..and look at where donegal where last year yet we haven't made a semi in 3 years now..

1

1985 says:

September 5, 2024 at 10:07 pm

I have wondered for some time when the mayo job came up who made the first move.was it rochford contacting mcstay or the other way around as after all Kevin mcstay announced his retirement from all management back in 2018.whatever happened it is now beginning to look like a mish mash of big names without any real discussion beforehand as to what way we were going to set up.As we have seen this year from the two all Ireland finalists the standard is fairly average at the minute so if we get our act together we probably have a decent chance next year but I think back to last year’s quarter final against Dublin where a player appears to refuse to come off right in front of Kevin mcstay and you would have to wonder how this sort of management system works

M

M02021 says:

September 5, 2024 at 10:41 pm

@Pod Fan player unrest didn't end McStay time with Roscommon, results and regressing did.

For Mayo not reaching at least the last 4 of Championship would be seen as a poor championship and the last three years Mayo haven't reached the last four.

Paper never refused ink & as yew tree alluded to above, we're in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

This review (and I use that term lightly) should have been done & dusted by now to allow next year's management team to start planning & watching the club games intensely.

It has a bit of a feel of 2018 about it. And we may have change, but it appears to have been handled all wrong.

Club championship has generally been better this season thankfully.

C

Clare says:

September 6, 2024 at 12:44 pm

@Mayo focus agree.

and it's turned into a media circus already now jaysus.

The club season definetly seems much better already then last year it's been quite entertaining and with a few players who look promising to!

E

September 6, 2024 at 5:48 pm

Agreed on the club championship, has been very interesting. Hopefully there's enough interest on the pass to allow multiple matches at the same time to be on / on catch up in later seasons as there'd be a heap of interest for it.

If Belmullet can turn Knockmore over that would be absolutely class - feels like both matches could have gone the other way (not to say Ballagh and Claremorris weren't the best teams on the day). Plenty of drama for everyone going into next weekend.

S

Cian o neill to the kingdom and paddy tally staying put too , Kerry trying to become the Mullins horse racing stable of GAA top coaches . Will it work , two main dudes wanting the main man job .

Kerry group funding Tally and O'Neill and the new Centre of Excellence in Currans while the taxpayer and Gaa pick up the tab for a new redevelopment in Fitzgearld Stadium, while Mayo sink in debt for a stand that was built 16 years ago.

S

Sean Burke says:

September 6, 2024 at 9:05 pm

It’s a fookin head melt sam og . We desperately need to get a plan in place to develop project Mayo GAA or we will be fooked on the scrap heap in the future. All these counties are getting the centre of excellence up and running when we have Managers saying it’s a difficult task to get a pitch in Mayo for the county teams to train on . I’m not looking to blame anyone, who cares anyway , it’s all about moving forward and getting a plan in place .

Why was there no chairman of the fundraising committee since feb ?

C

Cp says:

Exile and Gizmobobs. I agree with ye.knockmore down both their midfielders and with the o Donoghues back it should be a great game.would be unbelievable for belmullet if they could pull off the impossible.they were playing excellent football and were fairly comfortable against Claremorris until the sending off and that was without rod!

S

Southmayo Exile says:

September 6, 2024 at 9:51 pm

Kerry were a month longer in the championship that Mayo - yet they have their management review completed already with their backroom team freshened up - including Cian O' Neill in as head coach. We are still farting around with our review- and don't even know will the manager be retained.
No need to ask which county have won 37 all Irelands and which county have 3 all Ireland's.
Most of the money for building the centre of excellence in Kerry came from high profile Kerry players attending high profile events in London and America selling the vision and product. Mayo have more millionaires around the world the any other county - no effort made to tap into this.

C

Clare says:

September 6, 2024 at 10:21 pm

@south mayo exile good point fully aggre. It's a total joke

I seriously hope mcstay gets another chance but needs a shake up in background.

Why the fuck are we always so slow behind other counties in getting our shit together I blame County board for this.
If mcstay is to go who are we to get?? I think he deserves another chance but with him. There's to many big heads in this set up.

I hate the misery talk of mayo county team to as the club championship has been good&entertaining so far but sadly as others have said we are back in the media spotlight for all the wrong reasons again...

Yes there was a Kerry fundraiser organised by ex Kerry players in America a few years back that raised 1 million euro for the centre of excellence , but the main finance comes from Kerry group who in this article a few years back were giving 750,000 euro a year to Kerry County Board ,the most of any County in Ireland by and they also donated 1 million euro to the new Kerry centre of excellence.

J

JP says:

September 7, 2024 at 8:00 am

Kerry that time got their project classified in order to get a huge donation from the Irish Atlantic charity fund. The purpose of that fund is for the public good in charity or culture.
To then read years later that the Kerry ladies were struggling to get access to Currans?
No journalist would be able to question it or you'd get jumped on by a whole load of defending bluster. It's a stretch to designate sn elite training facility as anything cultural.
Tralee IT they got a big spots facilties investment and now Kerry want Fitzgerald stadium invested in after Tralee has already had significant investment. So that would be Currans, Tralee IT, Tralee stadium and now a fourth huge project in Killarney.
They'll get the go ahead of course and likely get propped up by HQ.

C

Clare says:

September 7, 2024 at 9:41 pm

@CP totally bullshit. They probably just want another year of making ridiculous money with so many games before the change.

They could easily change it for 2025 sure it's still what 4 months away 2025. Ridiculous stuff.

1

1985 says:

But will they be making ridiculous money .Alot of theese round robin games were not well attended and I expect a further drop off next year as the game is getting progressively more difficult to watch .I know alot of die hard supporters who have completely stopped attending because of the expense of meaningless games and the absolute borefest it has become

C

Cp says:

September 8, 2024 at 7:56 am

I saw an article saying there making similar money from attendances as last few years but with more games.
I think they could have made more money if they went to the new format as people would be intruiged to see how it worked

M

Mayo Focus says:

September 8, 2024 at 8:52 am

Only in the GAA could 87% of counties vote against something, yet those with power do the complete opposite. If they just got rid of the ridiculous preliminary quarter final, it would be a start.

They've come out with another dinger of a format for 2026 onwards. Don't understand why they keep complicating things.

In other news, I've seen some stuff online that Derry are keen on Peter Keane, former Kerry manager.

If we're not going to have FBD it makes it even more important that the panel is refreshed properly. NFL model, "What have you actually done last five seasons?"
We have panellists don't have the body of work.
We have a club championship that is NOT being dominated only by county panellists.
We need to bring in young lads on an upward trajectory. Not good enough now but where can we bring them to aged 23/24?

C

Culmore says:

September 8, 2024 at 11:32 am

FBD league is no loss, its played in terrible weather with most of the players not interested and a few thrown in with no hope of making the panel for the year. Proper taining and A verses B games much better to have team ready for 1st league game. Them let them play football and stop this possession game at all costs, better for everyone to loose a good game than even win a terrible game of possession football.

C

Cp says:

September 8, 2024 at 12:00 pm

Ya FBD is no loss.when u see counties playing a challenge game on the same day you know the competition isn’t exactly working.i think putting it in the dome was the worst thing to happen.no similarity to league football

G

Gizmobobs says:

September 8, 2024 at 12:04 pm

Correct I think Sean, was meant be a 3 year trial.

FBD elimination will just formalise the official challenge games that are being played anyway. It wasn't fair on lads the last few years just being asked to play init that week to fulfill fixture with management having no real intent at looking at them while the "A" team played elsewhere.

F

FW says:

September 8, 2024 at 12:27 pm

I think FBD should be scrapped and the league start a week or two early to free up the calendar bit.

However @Culmore,the FBD has been played in the Dome for years so not sure what you're on about re the weather.

T

Thedarkyfinn says:

September 8, 2024 at 1:52 pm

I've read a few articles on the latest County Board meeting and the comments on the review. To be fair this fiasco appears to be down to a few comments or accusations made by a couple of Club delegates i.e. the public are not happy with the management team and selectors plus statements that players are not happy with Mgmt. Tuohy appeared to respond reasonably well to these (based on quotes). You'd feel if the review was done earlier this type of stuff wouldn't happen (no time for the vacuum to develop).

I wonder with the comments made by these delegates are they made on a personal basis or are they speaking for their club

J

Jimbo says:

September 8, 2024 at 2:14 pm

I think it is terrible and an awful mistake to axe the FBD. Before it went inside the dome I was a regular attendee at the games after Xmas and it really whetted the appetite for the national league . It was also great to see the new players getting their start playing for mayo in a less pressurised environment. I am at my wits end with all this changing. I also think it is a mistake not spacing out the club fixtures so that I could attend games every weekend. The weather is beautiful this weekend and no club championship games on.
