From Mayo’s first outing of the National League to Crossmolina’s latest All-Ireland club success, it was quite the weekend at Croker.
Mike is joined by Colm Boyle and Ger Flanagan to look back on Mayo’s display against the Dubs and what we learned from their first night out.
The lads also look ahead to the Galway game, give their initial thoughts on the new rules, and reflect on the surreal ending to the All-Ireland Intermediate club final.

True Peter, but win our next 5 matches and we are in a League Final.
The league has become a testing ground and nothing more at this stage. Even if we are relegated the only Cup worth talking about is Sam. Its more important to time the Strength and Conditioning for July. Look at Derry last year and us the year we won it. It should be afforded more significance in terms of seeding for the All Ireland but its not currently.

Don’t think it’s ever a good thing to lose to Galway .

Agree Sean. And the league is a learning curve for most teams at this stage. What lessons did we learn from last weekend.
We need to be less predictable or have greater variation in our build up play. Otherwise we become predictable in our play and teams will find ways to defend against us.
How we manage the last quarter, where games are won and lost. We found a way to be "bridesmaids" again last weekend. Its a sickening tag but one we've earned with flying colours. Players need to find a hard core and cool heads when we enter the final quarter. We need leaders, players that will have an unwavering win at all costs attitude as we enter the final quarter.
Management need to coach less from the sideline and build confidence in players that they can be matchwinners.
Very interesting analysis by Martin Breheny on the new rules today.
A win at home against Galway is a must imo. Defeat and we are entering ugly dogfight territory

@Sean also agree espcially after Connacht last year. Don't mind if we get relegated but never a good day when we loose to the neighbours even in the league.
Just when we still have guys missing I just worry.
Though was impressed with how the young ones & Towey & Neary stood up.
Agree also if we looss on Sunday we are definetly heading towards relagtion battle.
Anyone ajy idea how Durcan is doing? Did hear McStay saying a few weeks ago that he was coming along really well and should see him towards the end of the league hopefully we do!

We can't keep making excuses about players missing. Players selected have to step up to the plate. Every county have players missing. The most important factor for next Sunday is that we progress in performance from last Sunday, regardless of what panel of players we start with.

@ontheditch not making any exsuces.
Just saying what is true we are missing players that is just a fact.
Of course we need other ones to step up and they did v Dubs even though lost. The league is about trying new players. So hope they step up again on Sunday they did show some promise for 1st game back.

@clare, we need to do a bit more than we did last weekend or we will be reinforcing the message that the bridesmaids tag is acceptable for these newbies. Nothing beats winning matches when it comes to moulding a group of players. We are at home, reasonable to accept that nothing short of winning is acceptable

@Ontheditch I totally agree with you.
I do agree that Galway are also step up from that Dubs team to.
It is a must win at home to and as you say we should be winning this.
Towey had great moments v Dubs.
But if we have the same start we did v Dubs v Galway I will worry..!

Amazing Galway bottle two All Ireland finals and are second favorites to win it this year.
Watched the final again on new years eve night (sad life)
The difference in body language between both teams in the parade was telling.
Galway thought they had the game won before it started, bringing Kelly in for the parade.
If Mayo did that we would be a laughing stock.

@JR totally I just don't understand it either.. But sure it is what it is..
I didn't think we would have a good league considering things but so long as we find new players & young ones come good I will be happy.
So with the Dubs game I was pleasantly surprised.
Still think we will come good championship either way.
How is Tommy C going in recovery? We need his type of pace with new rules..

I also recall some Galway players after the 2022 Final wearing 10 on the back of their t shirts. Jacqui Hurley even alluded to it saying it must have been a tribute to someone. Was it hell. It was going to be their 10th Celtic Cross. Or so they thought

We were second favourites for all Ireland a fair few times after losing previous years final.it’s the quality of the players we had then and Galway appear to have now .in fairness we have not progressed at all in the last two years.management should at this stage have players nailed into crucial positions

Obsession here with begrudging our good neighbours. We have our own deficiencies. To have a strong mayo we need a strong Galway, but we are in no position to throw stones...

Had the beating of Dublin last weekend. The new rules suit our style of play. However for all our ball possession and dominance in that game. We missed at least 10 simple scoring chances, that would have made it more comfortable for us in that game. Again it costs us badly and Dublin punish us. Same old stories not talking our chances when they arise. We need this win against Galway badly. And at least two more wins to be safe. We are not far off. But again I don’t think we have enough clinical forwards when it counts!!! Time will tell, I just don’t see it.
