Mayo Football Podcast episode: Previewing the club championship

The second round of the Mayo club championship is where the contenders are often separated from the pretenders.

Former Knockmore forward and manager Aidan Kilcoyne and Balla defender Ger Flanagan join Mike and Rob to look ahead to next weekend’s games in the Senior, Intermediate and Junior championships.

The lads also chat about Andy Moran’s appointment and tease out some of the main talking points around the big club matches.

This new podcast episode is now online and is available to our club members on Patreon. To get access to this show and to all our other great content, for as little as €1 a week, join the club HERE.

The Mayo Football Podcast has partnered with EBS — The Mortgage Masters — this season.

EBS are looking to hear from Mayo supporters who are living at home or abroad who might be looking for some mortgage advice.

Just throwing it out there, but..... if Andy Moran were to give Evan Regan sone game time in next years national league what would people think ?

I know Kevin scoffed at the notion , but he's being kicking points for fun in last years and this years club championship.

, perhaps old enough good enough applies in this case ?

@ Paddyjoejohntom. I’m sure you’re not the only one thinking that re Evan Regan .
He is playing much better than some of the other older forwards being mentioned returning to the squad ..
Evan’s work may be the big factor in him not returning, although I’d say Andy could be fairly convincing!

I'd have Evan in at the start of the year in a shot. If he was interested give him a chance and if it doesn't work out by Paddy's day that's ok. I know he has other work besides what he does with mayo but I'm sure he could still work the mayo job around football as he isn't core part of management team. Of all the former mayo players outside the panel himself and cillian are the only two kicking scores so I'd take them back in. I know we need to build for future but you also need experience and quality around the future players

People said Andy was too close to the players as he played with them previously, over 5 years ago

Now ye want one of the backroom team to be Player-Nutritionist... I hear the S&C coach is a tigerish corner back and the statsman has never lost a throw in. Maybe the curveball we need to win Sam

I'd have Evan Regan back. His scoring rate with Ballina is surely higher than when he was previously with Mayo.
The new rules will suit him as he is good 1 v 1 with the left corner back. He's a big stronger and heavier than when he was in previously.

JimmysEyebrow, Your new to the neighborhood I think. Your welcome. But there's no need to be an ass.
I was simply asking a genuine question

I’d have Kevin O Neill back, if he could put it over the feckin bar.

I certainly wouldn't have an issue with Evan being in the squad, get the players on form who want to play, playing regardless of youth or experience. Some might not have a full game in them but a lot of damage can be done in 20 minutes.

What do managers in soccer do with a tight budget? They'll often get an experienced striker who is like buying 14 goals and you get him on a free for wages.
Scoring is the hardest thing in both sports and a lot of it is experience.
Look at Robert Lewandowski being far superior in his mid 30s than his early 20s.
Actually comparing to soccer, shouldn't we really only judge scoring forwards after age 23 and all up to that is moreso development?
Andy Moran would have been way below par as a scoring forward in his early 20s.

I suppose when you get beyond 30 you don't feel the need, and you don't have the energy to try beat you man 3 times before having a go....you remember back to when you were told to ''kick the scutterin thing over the bar'',and it makes sense to you to do that now. Took a while but...
