Three early goals set Mayo on their way to a comfortable victory over Sligo in Castlebar this evening.
The result means that the team managed by Tom O’Reilly and David Heaney will now play Galway in the provincial semi-final.
Mike chatted with Colm Boyle and former Mayo minor manager Seán Deane after they watched this evening’s match.

Any update on the league matches this evening, who stood out?

Claremorris really standing out at the moment with a draw in Westport tonight, while neighbours Garrymore look in freefall after Crossmolina hammered them tonight. But very early in the year yet, Claremorris could well be a Final 4 team in championship this year with the scoring forwards they have, if they can improve in defence and midfield ,particurlarly there very weak full back line they could be a dark horse.

Cillian o Connor with 1-10 for the Tubber this evening....

Surely Kevin could give Cillian another call, I remember Ciaran McDonald arriving back at a challenge game v Kildare in June 2004 before he went on to win an All Star that summer.Be a massive boost to panel before the Connacht Final Peter Cooke is going back in playing less football than Cillian.

Great scoring though

A fit Cillian is a definite starter for me. We lack finishers. He’s also clever and creates space for others. He’s a huge loss. Underused in 2024 by management

Very good match in westport, fairr result, both teams with tremendous talent, Claremorris maybe a bit behind, but have serious talent and are still in transition,

Championship so far has been poor to say the least.
Lower division teams getting more 2 pointers than Division 1 teams.
Are they more inclined to take a chance or is the defense poorer?
Mayonaze says:
April 14, 2025 at 1:24 am
@sky… when you say tremendous talent, do you mean from a Mayo club perspective or do you mean at a national level with lads who will compete at the top end at intercounty? If the latter, who stood out?
Toad ted says:

No 12 for claremorris mark Maloney seems a decent forward and kicked a two pointer from play and another from a free

Rory winning Augusta feels like Mayo Lifting Sam after all the heartbreak. Was looking back on the Sligo match on GAA+. Surprisingly it was free once you have an account. They also have a good few retro games available, including 2006 Hillgate, which is much better quality than the Youtube version.

Glory days..........
100% agree on Alan Freeman....that's never been aired out either.
Horan said he had flu or something.........there were rumour's otherwise but its like one of those questions that never got asked or asked properly at least.
I was working with a fella from Ballymun at the time who coached Dean Rock since he was U8 .........the first thing he asked me when came through the door the next morning at work was.........''why did he take off Freeman??''.They were really worried about him in the run into the game.
I got the same question from an intercounty hurling manager who I know very well also.....
The weirdest thing was how there was never any real uproar.......at the time I would have expected the Aughamore guy to raise some stink ........it just never happened.
Horan had that thing like he could just not get criticised or get away with things others could'nt.
I dont think he is finished with Mayo football either by the way

Is it tubbercurry or Sligo for the under 20 game on wed. Saw initially it was tubbercurry, now mayo gaa website saying Sligo.
TsuDhoNim says:
April 14, 2025 at 5:15 pm
@Rober: It's on in Markievicz Park.
It was initially scheduled for Tubbercurry, so possibly a few old references around that remain for there, but got updated to Markievicz in the last couple of weeks.
Awful news. The pitch in Markievicz looks like a dangerous beach in recent games, a nasty combination of sand and holes. It's in such poor shape it's a genuine health & safety concern, with Sligo fans very vocal in their disgust given this is following recent pitch upgrade work. Fingers crossed it doesn't end up catching any of our lads with injuries or spoil the game Wednesday evening.

Jeeez if it’s that bad would they not go someplace else. Surely there are certain safety standards that are required to be met??

Markievicz Park the game will be played in this Wednesday, the pitch is to get relaid in a few weeks and not used again until spring 2026.

Mark Moran has pace to burn some speed from him against claremorris
Roco88 says:
April 14, 2025 at 11:00 pm
On Mark Moran my memory of him was he'd a fantastic performance -v- Galway in 2020 when given alot of space. A week later when playing Tyrone he was much quieter and I wondered if he welcomed the more physical defending. I've never been convinced since that he had the aggression required for senior inter county that say a Ryan O'Donoghue has. His brother Colm is probably a player I'd wonder more about in terms of what could have been. To be fair though, both lads are skilled and natural forwards
Regarding the earlier reference to Alan Freeman, he had a good 2013 campaign but over the course of his Mayo career, I think his ceiling was fairly apparent in his gametime/performances. He had a super All Ireland semi final but still only scored 0-1 from play if memory serves me correct. He was more prolific in 2010/2011 league but by 2012-2014, I felt defenders had his measure
Looking forward to U20 match this week. Was reading the Western People at the weekend and alot of U20 eligible players going well at club level i.e D Hurley, J Mahedy, R Clarke to name a few. Hopefully the exclusion of these lads won't come back to haunt this U20 team

I suspect the moving of hte u20 Sligo's homes games from Tubbercurry to Markievicz Park was deliberate.....given the condition of the pitch etc....I hope I'm wrong of course but it appears the pitch is in a very poor state so why else would you risk injuries over slowing down the opposition.....
