Something to note from yesterday’s league finals.the pitch markings were terrible.
Could not make out the arc from sitting in the stand.

I understand there was 3 games on but it’s the very basics that need to be right.

After today's hurling it's very much an open debate as to who is the new Mayo - Galway or Cork?.. Mayo have set such a high standard.. It's Brolly's call..

One thing today’s hurling final really taught us is the importance of tradition and not carrying emotional baggage. Tipp were clear outsiders against another traditional power, Cork, but Tipp have the self confidence, some might call it arrogance to believe that when they get to a final they have every chance of winning. That comes from having a winning mentality created by a great history and tradition. Even 6 down at half time didn’t knock them out of their stride. On the reverse side Cork haven’t won an AI for over 20 years which is an awful long time for them. They came in on the back of a cakewalk semi final which did more harm than good. In scoring 7 goals they were subject of so much hype but their much vaunted full forward line didn’t get a sniff. Similarly when Kerry get to Croke Park their tradition always has them expecting to win. In contrast when we compete in an AI final we just seem weighed down by our negative history. Now Kerry and Tipp have great players. Otherwise they wouldn’t be as successful but it does help the mental side of things when you have a tradition of winning.

In terms Cork, I can’t recall an all Ireland with a bigger collapse than that. Despite their relatively recent All Irelands in 04/05, that’s 5 defeats now since 05. Did that expectation they would get over the line seep into the players mindset at half time? 6 points up, huge anticipation for the second half to go and win it. Complete meltdown. Can only think the pressure froze them

Look at Leinster since 2018, look at Irish rugby at the World Cup Qtr finals, Jimmy White in World Snooker finals. The more defeats accumulated the bigger mental hurdle to get over the line the next time the opportunity presents.

Couldn't understand why people were writing off Tipp all week. If there was ever a county with a winning mentality, it's Tipp. They always show up in finals and have a great record in them. They have a few proven winners on the squad too, and they will always back themselves when the opportunity arises. That loss is going to be hard for Cork to get over, and I think it's quite evident that they are burdened by expectation and history, no more than ourselves.

A few weeks ago, there was an article in the Western People about being from Mayo. About being on defensive. About defending Mayo when random idiots used the fact you were from Mayo to call them bottlers.
Today on twitter (I'll admit we should take online stuff with a pinch of salt), I found myself defending Mayo. During an All-Ireland hurling final.

Because, people used Cork absolutely refusing to appear for the second half of a game, for scoring two points in a half, to attack Mayo.
The debate was who were the bigger bottlers. Christ, we've never bottled a final as favourites being six points up at half time and losing by twelve or thirteen.
We really need to win a title. Because I'm sick of people having a go at us! Well done to Tipp.

dreamysleepynightysnoozysnooze says:

We won't get any respect until we win it. It's as simple as that. Cork and Galway will have to listen to it too.

Weren't the league finals great... yes there league finals etc but under new rules some.class scores and thought crossed my mind .. below is 6 forwards whom weren't with Mayo championahip 6 forwards and just from the finals alone I think we should appreciate, there are talented forwards out there, imagine guys who did well the weekend and just from these games alone , a very decent set of 6 whom all scored and showed well over the weekend and yes it's only the league, but look at the positives of lads putting their hands up even this early in the year

10.Kobe....11.Carr....12..Kuba
13.Cunningham..14.Maheady...15.N Coggins

@Waiting for Sam: Fully agree with you there, nothing to do with us but in this gilded age of social media, people love to kick others when they’re down, and we are unfortunately a prime target. It won’t change unless we win Sam.

Galway have been underachieving with the depth of the talent they have, have lost several finals now but are media darlings and so little or no comment is passed on them. Go figure.

The Tipp goal and the sending off changed the game IMO, it’s a big challenge mentally to get back in the game when 6 points down and also down to 14 men. Tipp smelled blood at that point.

I would argue that last year’s final defeat for Cork was actually worse for Cork, as they had a shot in front of the posts to level it, but it was shanked.

C

Clare says:

@Charlie

Well we have never lost by as much as Cork did to be fair in a final.

I was backing Tipp all week . They are great hurling county . Think Cork just thought they had to show up.

Well done to Breafy ..and also to Cross wasn't sure how they would do in first year in seniors but so far so good fair play to them .

Sean Burke says:

I confess to knowing nothing much at all about hurling and have very little interest in it either bar plonking myself in front of the couch to watch the bigger championship games but I’m not at all sure there is any explanation for Corks collapse in the second half , two points scored in 35 mins of hurling , has that ever happened in an all Ireland final before in the history of the game .

The only lesson to be learned in there yesterday for competitive team sport was the old fashioned bit between the teeth , sheer belief and solid determination will go a long way to winning on the big day . Truly believing is so different to the pretend stuff , to truly believe you have to believe you’re the best team in Ireland , believe in the men that are leading you , believe in the group , trust the men around you .

Sunday’s football final have two teams that probably have all that in fairness so the best footballers will win and that’s why I think Kerry will win . Mcguiness magic/aura will work on a lot of counties but not a notion will it even enter Kerry mindset . They are the most arrogant county in the land and unfortunately thyeve every right to be .

Tirawleybaron says:

@Outside of the boot
of the six listed, it should be remembered that there is a big difference between County senior in Croke park and a division 2/3/4 final in Mayo.

THat said,
Kobe will make it to the top level - just might be afl not GAA
Kuba was top scorer in the championship last year, but nowhere to be seen for Mayo this season - new management team will want to take a look at him anyway.
Carr can be a devastating player, if he could stay fit.
Coggins was around the mayo panel this year.
Cunnigham has a ways to go.

It's mad stuff how we are the butt of jokes once again and we are not even a hurling county ! Or haven't even been near a final since 21.

Yet Galway can do no wrong apparently !

I agree we won't get respect until we win sam but it's gets so tiring and annoying being the butt end of jokes even though we've been out since the early stages .

I agree I think that Kerry will do it and it will be the Clifford's show . You would wonder if Donegal don't do it will Murphy stay on another year.

O

Outside of the Boot says:

Agreed Tirawley, but definition of insanity is doing same thing over and over and expecting different results .
Square pegs and round holes, was definitely our 6 forwards last year, so nice to see talent out there and under new rules can you get away with 1 season of Intercounty S and C , id imagine so as most lads not exclusive to them 6 bit any forwards in County worth their salt are in good S and C shape.

@clare, Galway have the third most all-irelands in football of any county. They have more all-irelands than armagh, tyrone and donegal combined. They have won an all ireland in recent memory. I hate this anti-galway shite. Who cares if we are the butt of jokes, any manager worth anything would use that for a siege mentality but knowing the county board they’ll probably pick some spoofer who is a nice fella but not a hardened winner. As well Galway are a dual county, dislike them as much as you want but you have to respect them. They are a better gaa county than us

O

Ontheditch says:

July 21, 2025 at 11:51 am

It's a forwards game under the new rules, outshooting opposition in high scoring games is the trend looking at results.
Are we trying to take soft comfort out of Cork’s fold up in the second half? We're not the only ones, so it's not so bad after all. That doesn't make any sense to me. The next manager has his work cut out for him if that attitude seeps into players thinkings

C

Clare says:

July 21, 2025 at 11:59 am

@ontheditch

I don't think that's what people were trying to say .

Mostly outsiders were trying to say who are the biggest bottlers Mayo or Cork ? I certainly don't find any comfort in that ! Agree whoever comes in has a big job to do and to get the guys confidence back .

I

It Means Nothing to Me says:

Yesterday's hurling final was simply insane. Bar Mayo, I've never felt such atmosphere around the place. It felt twice as full as last weeks's Meath v Donegal sell out, and for that match you could say they were all genuine fans. There was a real bite to the rivalry, and some of the 'banter' beside me was spicy.

And Tipp's comeback? The wind was an issue. My companion said, watch the first five minutes and see if Tipp hit points, and Cork wides. That's what happened. Of course Tipp's bodies on the line approach rattled Cork and McGrath under the high ball was lethal. He's slow incidentally, but give him the right ball, and things happen - Mayo's new management please note.

And the best comment of the day? On Clonliffe Road, a Tipp supporter confided to me 'Liam Cahill had nothing to do with it. It was all about the disrespect of the Cork people', a reference some Cork supporters wearing Cork champions 2025 tattoos, somewhat ahead of an actual victory.

The hurling yesterday just goes to show punditry and form can mean nothing at times. Would anyone have tipperary in the top 5 at the start of the season. Not a chance. Even heard one of the tipp players saying they didn't see this coming at the beginning of the year and I'd say if they were pushed they probably didn't see it at the start of the 2nd half yesterday . Nothing went for cork in the 2nd half between missing a penalty, hitting post and crossbar and even a cork player flicking the ball to prevent a sideline and sliotair bounces off a teammate and out for a tipp ball. We can talk as much as we want on here about mayo not in top 5 or 8 or whatever but the bottom line is anything can happen on a given day and 12 months is a long time in sport.

O

Ontheditch says:

How did Cork end up with all the tickets. The GAA should have in place a fair transparent system of distribution of tickets. Looked anything but that. Did the GAA deliberately build up Cork in the same way as Dubs in football, only diff Dubs delivered.

C

Clare says:

S

T

to win just once says:

July 21, 2025 at 3:16 pm

I think Cork are right not to have a homecoming. How must players and management feel after that non performance yesterday. The last thing they need is to hear platitudes and “we ll be back” guff from a small crowd. There was massive hype in Cork. Everyone in Cork thought they’d win, the bookies had them raging favourites but when you look at the trajectory of both teams really Tipp were in a great place. Cork beat them in the round robin but Tipp were down to 14 before throw in. Cork lost a 12 point lead to draw with Clare, were hammered by Limerick in round robin before beating them on penalties in Munster final and then a cakewalk v dubs in semi final. In contrast Tipp lost with 14 men v Cork, drew with Limerick and beat Waterford, Clare, Laois, Galway and Kilkenny so they had massive momentum. Add to that the total self belief they have when they play AI finals. Cork couldn’t buy a break yesterday, hit woodwork 4 times, two no scores from hawk eye, missed a penalty and were totally unable to deal with Tipps tactics ie a sweeper. I get no pleasure in seeing good players have total nightmares on the biggest day of their careers. All they need now is peace to lick their wounds as the key board warriors both inside and outside the county lay into them. We know what that feels like in Mayo,

C

Clare says:

July 21, 2025 at 3:24 pm

I totally understand why the Cork players don't want to do it not saying otherwise. Home comings when you've lost the cup are awful .

Maybe they should just be got rid of altogether then for the loosing team . Some supporters would still like to go say thanks to them anyway though . Sure Galway even did it last year even though they looked liked they wanted to be anywhere but there .

G

Gizmobobs says:

July 21, 2025 at 3:31 pm

Cork are dead right to cancel the homecoming, players would not want it, fans would not want it. We've been there and there is no happiness to be had.

S

Shuffly Deck says:

July 21, 2025 at 3:36 pm

I thought when Tipp got the first 5 points (still one down) the game was over, they had all the momentum. Like the other poster I thought Horgan might miss that free because it was a tricky breeze. Tips young lad kept throwing grass in the air but he nailed every free despite Cork jeers. Re the Mayo analogy I don’t think we ever bottled a final, lost a couple by 5 but all others was mostly efficient on the scoreboard bar Donegal 2012 start of 2nd half when we missed 3/4.. our only bad beatings came in QFs and one SF replay when we ran out of legs as Dubs unloaded a great bench. Throughout that era would say some dips during games but never was there such a capitulation as Cork had. That said, everything that could go wrong for Cork did and they lost all composure. Their management had a meeting at one point, may even have been before the penalty and the body language was we don’t know how to stop this. Harnedy came on and hit a wide, had he scored things could change. Then he hit the crossbar, bad luck. After that there was no way back apart from goals which were unlikely to come.
