There was plenty of drama, excitement and entertainment for the Mayo supporters who watched their team beat Kerry in Castlebar on Saturday afternoon.
Mike, Rob and John were there – along with more than 9,000 supporters – as were Colm Boyle and Ed McGreal.
We hear from all of them, along with Jack O’Connor and Kevin McStay, as well as former Kerry captain Ambrose O’Donovan.

With Armagh now on 5 pts as well, Mayo need another win, especially when you look at scoring difference. Draw might be enough if Tyrone and Derry lose tomorrow but not certain.

If Derry and Tyrone win tomorrow which is possible it will be an intriguing final 2 rounds of the league.

Loved hearing Ambrose give our management team a vote of confidence. They've taken a hell a lot of stick. Hopefully we all roll in behind them now and give the championship a right rattle

Supporters react to what’s in front of them , the Galway game was shameful , so what if management got stick over it maybe it’s the kick up the arse they needed , it’s a different dynamic we are seeing the last two games that’s for sure . More please
Any word on Tommy conroy ?

I think eoghan mclougjlin was trying too hard when he came on . He messed up the first 3 plays he was involved in. He just needs to keep it simple and he will become a bigger assey to yhe team. Anyway a great result.

For me,and the few around me at the game the most pleasing thing, apart from the result obviously, was the realization that the 'Mayo style' of play that we feared was lost and gone, can still be rolled out. Ok, Keegan,Boyle and Higgins have moved on but we still have lads there who can mix it with the best.
Donnacha eyeballing D.Clifford as play unfolded around him was reminiscint of Keegan on Connolly or Shane Walsh a few years ago.
Whatever experiment we were on with the lateral stuff didn't sit right on the terraces, or on the field either, imo.
So now we know we still have it and that gives us hope again, even if we revert to the other stuff,we know it's there in the locker.
Meath Exile says:

Agreed with you 2 hops if we play the football that's natural to our players and not the lateral stuff we are a match for any team ,we have the players

Well done Mayo, great team game.
Fair play Aidan, your brilliant observation & smartness to let the Kerry player go forward over the half way, thereby the 3 up rule was breeched ?
The supporters were the mighty today.
Roll on Derry. Enjoy your night Mayo.

Great performance today,McStay needed that.Looks like we have Division 1 football for another year.Hession going to Half back line I thought was a super move today marking Paudie Clifford.I would like to see John Vahey get game against Derry Sunday week .With Sligo playing poor in Division 3 having won no games all focus is on Galway or Roscommon in McHale Park on the 4th May.McStays biggest day of the year.

@tsudhonim.not to be padantic but there's a throw ball in the 3v3 breach also. if 2 players contesting the ball cross the halfway line then the ref throws up the ball..

Last week, that individual from Derry says Aido looked like Beckham but without the medals. These week he says he 'resembles a Greek statue with fewer moves " .
Can someone do the decent thing and run him out of the county, please.

It was a sublime win today no doubt about it league games of late with Kerry home and away have been a toss of a coin and the league is a lottery impossible to predict, id a feeling we would restore our second half performance against Armagh and push on so happy it happened but honestly the the best part was how when we went down by 2 we dug in and found a way to win which we all no has done us so many times the leaders found a way and that was so encouraging , players that we might have thought have gone into robot mode came good today and I feel it’s a tonic that can only progress , some players that deserve a mention Mchugh hession carney ruane McBrien Flynn we have a serious mid section that can mix it with anyone and Ryan well I’ve said it for a few years now one of the best forwards in the country we have the players a mix of youth and experience only way is up

Amazing how everything is rosy in the garden now. Still huge question marks over this team and they'll be judged on championship. A quarter final has been their best finish under this management.

It's an intriguing league, no doubt. The results and performances are helter-skelter with no team looking unbeatable.
Great performance by all concerned yesterday but, I have to admit, there's a gulf in physical development apparent when I watch Galway, Donegal and Armagh, even in comparison to Dublin now. They, too, are looking a bit lightweight in certain areas of the field.
It's going to the wire this one... seven points will be required if things fall a certain way today methinks. Can see Dublin losing their next two with Kerry pulling a Houdini stroke in their games. Dangerous to be complacent here.

McStay said on radio 1 that Davitt Neary isn't injured. They're just managing him carefully seeing as it's his first year and he's had a lot of exposure recently.

@No doubt: When it comes to chats on rules some pedantry is massively encouraged.
That's wouldn't be a part of the new rules or specific to this, that'd be an oldie in 4.31 for two teams to foul simultaneously.

Derry is not an easy place to go at all and we have a terrible record against them.I am not sure we have ever won up there.
I remember us beating them in Charlestown back in 2000...other than that I don't know if we ever beat them.
Remember them beating us in Castlebar when they were All Ireland Champions and Brolly scoring a goal at the Bacon Factory end....
They will be looking for a win clearly and are well capable.....we could need 7 points this year.....it's important to get them.....and in response to a previous poster I would have no interest in a league final
Tubberman says:
March 2, 2025 at 8:49 am
I remember us beating Derry in Ballina in early 2000s.
Then there was the qualifier match in McHale Park in 2017 when we looked dead and buried until Conor Loftus' thunderbolt and the roof nearly lifted off the stand!
And there was last year... nuff said.

@FreeTheEastBank: Still scenarios available where we can get relegated or make a final while on 7 points. When folks talk about how tight it is in D1 they really mean it.

I think mathematically this must be the tightest division one league there's ever been. Plenty teans can get relegated and plenty teams can make the final. Just the fact of the lowest three teams having several pts each.

What a mess the league is where you have the top 8 teams in the country and no one really wants to reach the final.first of all a league shouldn’t have a final. The team with most points wins the league as that is what a league is .we had ridiculous scenario a few years ago with semi finals and on the final day you could be relegated or be in the semi final.you have a situation now where teams can field weakened teams in remaining games to avoid the final and now is basically a form of Fbd league or o Byrne cup especially this year with the general confusion over the rules.Ger canning and enda mcginly didn’t know why cormac Costellos point was disallowed yesterday although by consulting linesman Barry Cassidy it seemed obvious it was wide but imagine the confusion in the crowd.

One swallow never made a summer, good performance yesterday and they played good football and more important fought for each other. However after 3 years some basic things should have been sorted by now, goalkeeper/kickouts not fully sorted, no replacement tried out, corner backs not settled yet, Hessin and Callinan not corner backs, half back line ok, no settled midfield, who are our best two for there, when T Conroy gets back there are about 7 forwards worth their place, however still no left side free taken, biggest problem still is letting them play football, when they run at defences at speed , a delight to watch and will beat most teams, however when they go back to back and side way passing, they are pure sh1t .

1985, agree it's a bit of a shame the league is now a glorified warm up, FBD type event as opposed to meaningful competition for the competing teams. This year especially bad obviously with rules trials. But if final remains right up to week before key games in Ulster it will be hard see that change anytime soon. Given Donegal out in championship after final this year it's hard see them caring much about last round of league. Derry less McKinless are proving to be very porous with about twice the amount of goals conceded to any other team in Division. So strong possibility we get wins in last 2 games. Unless we give time to lads who have been warning bench last 5 rounds and not seen grass.
All Ireland like last year is between about 7 D1 teams I'd rule Derry out as McKinless won't be back. But rest of back on their day very level on any given day. I'd have Galway slight favourites given how well doing defensively and their forwards power.

The league has always had that dynamic of tight margins of place in final or relegation fight . It was even worse when there were semi finals . It wasn’t that long ago we went to cork , win we avoid relegation, which we did (Cillian with two sublime kicks one from the left the other the right side of the pitch out near the line ) . Had to dash back to the coach and my phone died ,only realised we had made semi final when I got back to Dublin .
Interesting games today , can Donegal really avoid a league final place if they beat Derry today , so will they want it , Derry are fighting for survival and desperately need the points . If Derry did win , we play Derry next round , Kerry play Armagh , the whole thing is blown wide open bar Galway as top spot if they win today that is . It’s extremely intriguing from a betting perspective

The weekly pathetic digs at Aidan O'Shea and Mayo from the Sunday Independent( but don't worry they will always use O'Shea in any photos about Mayo GAA) in the guise of an expert column are more about small man syndrome, trying to stay relevant, and the author's personal animosity towards him since 2015. O'Shea has twelve inter county medals that the majority on here, would give anything for and that's ignoring FBD and International rules and all stars. Best Ignored.

That’s what I was talking about it being more ridiculous with semi finals.A league is a league determined by points accumulated.Theese finals are simply a money making exercise and in the current format are now just becoming a nuisance for counties with designs on the championship

Just going back to that 1993 league game with Derry I have a memory of a screamer of a goal from Ray Dempsey that seemed to be hit from nearly 40 yards out .it smashed in off the crossbar from what I can recall

Sounds like Donegal are going to throw their last two matches
Derry are relegated so anything could happen with them
9 points will be a league final v Galway
7 will be job done..
5 will be relegation and a disaster
