@Mayonaze: A little context is always helpful when evaluating young development squads.
- This is our first look at any 20s side playing these rules, so hard to baseline anything from previous years or other Provinces (every team putting a pretty unique take on tactics so difficult for apples to apples comparisons)
- We've the second-best defensive record in Connacht, with significantly the best Score Difference (almost double the score difference of the next highest - +45 vs +28 for Roscommon, with their SD/defensive stats helped significantly by our lads having a real off day in front of the posts when we played)
- We were operating the last day without Slattery, Silke (both starters at times last year), Coghill (very likely a starter this year if fit, was flying pre-injury), Coggins, Lavelle & Duffy that all might have featured in our back 6 (sadly it looks like the first 5 of those might be out for the rest of the campaign now) and having to play with others a little out of position (though playing incredibly well there to be fair)
- All the praise has been for our dangerous inside forward line, but when the game was in the melting pot it was our defence (both on turnovers and on breaking ball) that gave us a big part of the platform to take over. In the first 33 minutes (where I happen to be while tagging a few events - happy to update with final numbers when done) Sligo's first 16 phases ended in 9 shots (~56%), 5 scores (~31%), 4 wides (25%, with 2 dead balls and 2 under heavy pressure) and 7 turn overs (~44%). Those look like incredible numbers to me. I'd be a lot more forgiving about a little space given away after going 22-5 ahead in a game that we always looked in control of.
In terms of comparisons...
Derry have a fantastic side. They put in a horrid performance against Galway in the minor semi-final in '22 (falling just short in the process - an All Ireland they really feel they left behind them), before blitzing the minor Championship with All-Ireland wins in '23 & '24. They've got one of the most impressive 20s sides in recent memory (nationally - including some of the record-breaking Dublin ones or the potential Kerry ones that never quite happened with lads going senior early). They're not quite favourites for the Competition yet (they've still to face excellent Tyrone & Donegal sides, lowering their odds while in the betting Kerry/Mayo/Kildare are expected [overly so IMHO, Mayo & Kildare still have real battles ahead] to win their Provincials relatively easily), but they are favourites to win Ulster and the Ulster Champions would very likely be favourites to win ahead of any other Province if you got a price on that.
If a bar is arbitrarily set at "beat them or their stats or else we're bad" that seems a quite foolish & fruitless line in the sand for me.
Whether Mayo have the panel (especially with 5-9 potential starters missing or injured) to win is very open to debate, but no need to ever debate that with a development squad. There's lots of excitement to be taken from watching talented young lads develop (great to see young Butler getting his first minutes at just 17) without stressing on if they win or not.
As for "management must look at this", I'm not sure what that refers to?
There's no obvious issues being exploited frequently or clear gaps in the system or lack of work-rate causing issues. We're actively ticking all those boxes (said as someone that was critical of gaps in some of those last year) and the goals the last day came from Sligo lads winning 1v1s. That's a part of the game now. The lads they beat are all solid players, well among our best, and were unfortunate rather than poor play with those chances. Notable that quite a few of Sligo's scores (not something I ever tagged so can't put a number on it) also came from very favourable frees/advantages awarded, likely with the heavy scoreline at the time playing a role in those calls. Give a side enough attempts and eventually they'll manage to punch through.
The scores often swung, in either direction, based on kickouts won.
Again, really hard to fault lads losing a few restarts when those were the same lads that dominated so many to put us into the huge lead (Sligo were 2/7 on our kickouts and 8/18 on their own, including us turning over 4 short all leading to scores & us managing to win 7/10 breaking balls in that first 33 minutes). Against a breeze and against decent players (Sligo have a few fantastic prospects there, I'd be surprised if a couple don't make Tailteann Cup for them this year. Ross especially looks a star in the making, with Keaveney doing an absolutely outstanding job on him) that's just a part of the new game. We've seen it with New York, Antrim or London already this year at Senior. Par for the course.
I'm sure the lads would love to dominate around the middle for a full 60, I'm sure they'd love to win even more turnovers at the back or force even more wides from opposition and I'm sure they'll work hard towards achieving that going forward. Nothing in what we've seen would have me spending more time concerned about scores conceded rather than enjoying some of the fantastic defending, fantastic fielding, sublime direct transitions and fantastic scoring they've managed to put on display at times. No guarantee that'll win a Connacht Final or anything beyond it, but whether it does or not it's all helping the lads develop as players and giving plenty of fans some genuinely exciting football to enjoy.

Great forward play but once again we concede far too easily. If our defence isn’t sorted by management these boys unfortunately won’t win anything.

I think that’s a tad simplistic, Mayonaze. Big scorelines are being recorded by teams everywhere under the new rules and there are plenty of examples where teams score heavily when they get on top, as Sligo did for a time after the break. But then we got back in control and scored heavily again.
Mikey says:

Decent team but the true merits of this team will not be really known until they get to beat one of the northern teams.
We also need to be careful about over hyping this full forward line, there is no doubt that there is talent within the group, and if we can win midfield over the 60 minutes then it will take a good defence to hold them.
However, there is nothing won yet apart from the group games, fun ( and pressure) starts with knock out. I expect the Rossies to win next week and they may have learned more from their earlier defeat so more improvement required before we can claim a Connacht title.

If ever there was a game to trumpet the new rules this was it. As has been said above they tend to favour the better attacking teams and while conceding 2.16 looks a lot in modern terms it really isn't. Sligo hit three 2pointers in a purple patch which means they scored 15 times which isn't excessive. As a spectacle and entertainment it was top notch and what we've all been crying out for and hopefully the seniors aren't too proud to take on board the fast fluid attacking style of this team.

Pebblesmeller says:

Fair play to both sets of young men for putting on such a display of scoring. These new rules are a real tonic for the game and, as Sligo proved last night, being 10 or 15 points down does not necessarily mean you are out of sight.
Sligo are a good side, well managed and well coached. They pulled the lead in at a time that Mayo could be forgiven for "pulling up" early and the scores could be considered what is known in American sport as "garbage time" scores. However, there is improvement needed in that defense regardless as they certainly did look a little open when Sligo ran at them. That's a good place to be though, winning well, scoring high but still improvement needed.
As was said above the pressure starts now. These lads need to prove they can put on a display like that in knockout football when medals are on the line. That's different gravy and that must be their focus for now.

Y'know what is totally undervalued still under the new rules? The kickpassing wing back.
I fear coaches would look at our u20s and pick out the attacking defenders who can solo forward at pace. What might get lost is a slower wing back that's a brave and accurate kick passer into the forwards. There's honestly much less need for defenders to be attacking as opposed to simply kicking it up the line to good ball winners like Tom Lydon or Niall Hurley.
Our defenders only scored one point last night!!

It’s great to see this team going well and the talent that is coming through at this level.
The old way of judging success of an u20 or minor side is simply did they win an all ireland. I’d rather the success of the team be judged by how many established county senior players for mayo will this side produce, which of course won’t be known for several years yet.
Yes it would be nice to win an all Ireland but the fact is these underage teams are still development grades that should have a primary long term focus on producing as many talented and well developed players as possible to compete for places on mayo senior panels and teams into the future. That’s the ultimate goal.
Didn't really like the attitude around this grade last year from the mayo football public when we found ourselves in a B all Ireland final against Down. There was a dismissive attitude to the B all Ireland semi final and final games and the competition when it should have been seen as two extra matches to develop players for the future.
While we should aspire to always be in the A competition, it was still a valuable chance for lads to develop and improve. A player like Oisin Cronin developed a lot over the course of last years u20 campaign and he’s a better player this year for that experience. This year’s team is benefitting from that.
The round robin series at underage level in Connacht has been one of the best GAA administration decisions in recent years.

Fair play to all involved to get the changes made and implemented. We are often resistant to change but the game was dying in front of us. The 2 point free is the only thing i'd get rid of.
Games last year were pedestrian at best with the odd injection of pace. Its the other way round now. Games are pacy with the odd injection of pedestrianism.
The good thing for us in the under 20's is that there is a multiple threat in that forward line. Hard to lock them all down at the same time. Plenty of back up on the panel as well it seems.

I was in Markievicz Park yesterday evening for the game, ideal conditions however the pitch was in very poor condition extensive amounts of loose sand covering over holes and bare patches on it... I was very surprised that a game of this level was played on it. I understand now that the pitch is closed after this game for relaying etc.
The support from both sides was disappointing and in particular from Mayo, i know timing was not ideal and game was also live streamed. They would have a much better attendance i think if game had bene played in Tubbercurry as originally planned. The game itself was of a high standard, Mayo clearly had better forwards and converted a high number of their possessions, with Sligo struggling to convert in the first half in particular leading to Mayo's significant lead at half time. Second half Sligo with the assistance of the wind and the introduction of their captain Ronan Nyland made a game of it in fairness and reduced the gap to 7 I think. Mayo's stronger bench and overall strength over all the pitch resulted in them going up another gear in the last quarter and winning comfortably in the end. Overall a very high scoring and entertaining game. I don't think Sligo are out of this by any means...even if Roscommon put up a big score against Leitrim. Word was that Leitrim didn't play their full team due to Saturday's senior game with Mayo and this had an impact etc. The next game for Mayo will be biggest they have had in their football careers to date....lets get behind them and give them our full support in getting over the line and securing a much needed boost at this age grade.

@Tony Freeman: Still sides across the country that might still have lads playing both senior and u20 in the same week (the likes of Eoin McElholm potentially doing it for Tyrone). A big part of the discussion on the change in rules from a week lock-out to a 60 hour lock-out relatively recently was that games would need to be locked in on Wednesdays so to avoid conflict with the new rule.
That said - interesting to see that the All-Ireland Semi-Final has been pencilled in for dates between Saturday 10th, Sunday 11th or Wednesday 14th May & the Final for dates between the Saturday 17th, Sunday 18th & Wednesday 21st so looks like they're leaving themselves a little wiggle room for those on the weekends. While I agree the 2 pointer wasn't needed we have to accept it's there for all teams and of course the ones with good long kickers will make hay but it doesn't mean their opponents might have more 2pt kickers coming through.
Basically as long as the game is more fluid and attacking, I'm all for giving advantages to attackers. In fairness although we appreciate good defending we go to watch goals and points. The changes have made the game so much more entertaining but it's funny how people who moaned about defensive football are now bemoaning it across the GAA world.

I don't particularly like them, I don't think they add a lot to the game, they completely devalue the worth of a goal and I feel that the other new new rules were sufficient in themselves in having the desired affect. And 2 points from a free is plain daft-2 of these frees worth more than a goal-give me a break.

TheLondonEye says:
April 17, 2025 at 11:12 pm
As an ex corner forward, the two pointer is a mad idea in my opinion.
It devalues the good work a corner forward can do i.e sync up with an out field player and run to space for a high or low ball into the corner etc etc. This is easier said than done but has high rewards. The forward can then 'work' the defender and win free or alternatively knock over an easy point. Either outcome only materialises however because of the good chemistry of the corner forward with the outfield player. And getting the ball in close to goal increase the likelyhood of a score. It's a skillful part of the game.
All of above now sort of goes out the window a bit.
The excitment of the inside player getting on the ball is sort of lost with having to accept the ball is now in a zone where only potentially one point is on offer. It's mad.
It takes a lot of concentration from players to make passes inside stick; this concentration is surely now compromised with players having to contend with whether they have stepped in or out of the two pointer zone and the consequences of that. I don't think any player who has operated in the corner forward position support the two pointer. That's my opinion.
I hope a campaign starts soon to get rid of the two pointer. Seriously.

Fine performance. Hurley in particular goes for the jugular and has the physique to break the tackle . Beirne looks very good too. Impressed by him in the schools final and showing more of the same albeit at a much higher level. HughO’Loughlin has a cut of a serious player about him and went into midfield at times and won a lot of high balls. Oisin Cronin too has a lot of pace.
I may as well chip in on the 2 pointer too. Definitely against it for frees and this thing of bringing it out from an inside free. Imagine if a ref gets it wrong near the end of a game when the stakes are high, would never hear the end of it. From play it’s a great skill but it can result in very lopsided halves of football on a windy day. Can empathise with the corner forward perspective above. The plus side is it opens up the pitch but maybe the 3 players up and back rule is good enough to sort that out and make sure we never have puke football again.

..................Reape
Coyne......Mchugh.....Hession
Eoghan Mac..Diarmuid.....Mcbrien
..............Flynn....Carney
Neary.........Ruane......Coggins
AOS...........Mchale......ROD
I'd love to see us release 10 and 12 to play two lads with searing pace and direct runners.
Ruane at midfield won't work in bigger games, let's keep his confidence and build him into a more attack focused role, utilise his best skillsets just now.
Flynn and Carney can dog fight anyone, are aerially very good, think flynns wasted at 12 on out kickouts as he's a great fielder.
Eoghan Mac at 5 let's him cut in field , being all left footed playing on left means he's easily shepherded out to end line .
Diarmuid at 6 gives him a defined role whilst allowing him a breather now and again, his tackling and game smarts should see him hold the center well.
Mcbrien at 7 gives him opportunity to attack but same time he's got to use his physicality to win breaking ball. We been unusually lacking in that dept.
Forward need confidence and start our best fullforward line, Darren Mchale will tag on scores and can drift out a bit and work off AOS.
Alternating with ROD and getting ROD into space and the game better .
Frank Irwins a fine player and give him minutes but I'd see him moreso as a 12 . The James Horan conundrum will persist with Irwin , is he a 12 or 14 .
Anyways here's looking forward to the game, just hope we do try different things to have a plan B rather than static forwards in Croker when game is passing us by.

Whatever about a 2 pointer being allowed from play I really don’t think there should be 2 points for a free. Some of those frees are given on the half way line for a very minor infringement and is then brought forward to the edge of the arc. Overall the new rules have been positive with higher scoring, high fielding, good contests in mid field and excellent long range scoring. On the down side the lift a goal gives a team is reduced as it can be quickly surpassed by two 2 pointers. A windy day is also impacting heavily as a team can hit a number of 2 pointers quickly and change the course of the game. The kick out has become incredibly important also. The team attacking the kick out has a major advantage. Having said that the football this year has been more entertaining despite few shocks. Even the supposed weaker teams are racking up fairly decent scores

I’d have a concern too in the backline in terms of being too easy to score against. There’s some really promising players in there in Gilmore, McGreal and McMonagle that I believe have high ceiling ahead of them so it’s not on paper a weak area. If I think of one of Sligo goals the last day where the player rounded Gilmore far too easy, that would be a concern. Hopefully there is coaching being done with these lads on these aspects.
It’s so refreshing tho to be watching this mayo u20 team v the dross served up the past 5-6 years. I don’t think it’s really anything the mgt have done differently to be honest. I think this team just have 3 really dangerous inside forwards and they are the difference. So we should enjoy the moment and see where it takes us

Will watch later with a cold beer as a warmup for tomorrow.

@No doubt: Happy to take your word on it (and always appreciate a correction!).
Someone (that I'd have trusted - Boyler? Declan O'Reilly? Peadar possibly on the pod?) mentioned 17 recently, but possibly was a slip on their end. Easy for a "just out of u17" to skip a few steps and come out as just "17" when chatting on the spot like that.

Can anyone confirm who Daithí Butler came on for the last evening against Sligo in the U20 game? He's been mentioned here and I know Peadar Gardiner referenced his coming on in his post-match comments but I have to confess I missed it myself on the night and he's not listed among the subs in the few match reports that have appeared so far. Would be good to have this detail for the record - the local papers are likely to have this info next week but if anyone could confirm it now, that would be even better.

@Tsu…what I mean/meant by ‘management must look at this’ is my opinion that our defence has been cut open for goals too easily and management need to rectify that. It was fairly agreed after the match it Tuam and on the post match podcast that it was an area of some concern. The centre of our defence especially when run at.
I take your point about several of our defenders being out. It’s a shame, hopefully these lads will get back going again soon and feature at a senior level

@Mayonaze: Woops. Apologies for the delay here. I spotted this just before the games that weekend but never got a chance to reply, then completely forgot (a positive sign for the enjoyment of the games I guess). My bad.
The hard running through the middle was a factor in Tuam for sure and in one of the other games (I'm struggling to remember if it was Roscommon or Leitrim, I'd edge towards Roscommon given it would have had us worrying about it more after Galway). Though we seem to have tightened things up there relatively well.
Debatable to consider any of the goal conceded from the Sligo game as being run at down the middle.
One was from a lad falling asleep tracking his man, letting the full forward get goal side on a brief jog from the arc to the 20 and then a peach of a ball finding him inside. Individual error (from one of our better players, though not a natural defender). The other was one of our best defenders getting stood up and taken 1v1 out the wing. Nothing in the system I'd be hoping for David or Tom to fix around those. Though valid questions to be asked on the concentration of the lads, but 11 point leads at the time of both I'd not overly dwell on those.
In both cases, I'd be looking more at what lead to it out the field rather than suggesting the loose defending was the root cause.
Sligo's scores came in a couple of brief flurries. They hit 9 off 4 shots in a 5-minute spell just before the 40th minute, taking them from 0-5 to 1-11. That happened just after our defenders had successfully turned over the 3rd Sligo attack in a row of the 2nd half and we sloppily turned over the ball while kicking a free less than 13m. That was then followed by us managing to turn over 4 of our attacks in a row (errors more than good Sligo defending - with this being half of all our turnovers for the game) & managing to lose 3 of our own kick-outs in a row, stuff we didn't come close to repeating for the rest of the game (a couple of questionable frees awarded in there too, though that tends to happen with a big momentum shift so we'd have to own a little of that ourselves). Not sure it's any big surprise Sligo hit 15 of their 22 total in the same 15-minute window we managed the vast majority of our own turn-overs, wides & lost kick-outs.
The running through the middle certainly one we'll want a plan for this evening with lads like Heneghan who can potentially power through, the way Ross might have for Sligo where we had a plan to prevent him that worked well.
For anyone that might enjoy some random numbers...
Sligo attacks:
- 37% turned over
- 63% leading to a shot
- 50% leading to a score
Mayo attacks:
- 19% turned over
- 81% leading to a shot
- 67% leading to a score
Mayo won ~64% of the Sligo restarts (including ~33% of their shorts) & ~63% of our own (though only broke 50/50 on our own long kicks).
