Can we start a petition to the county board never to wear that jersey again.

McStay said that we would go all out to win that game and the team selection seemed to confirm that. We simply did'nt turn up and only a few could be satisfied with their performance. Some of our lads looked fatigued and surely our management should have known that. If we did'nt intend going flat out or realized that we wer'nt going to be able to and, therefore had very little chance of winning, we should, at the very least, have rested key players who have had a lot of minutes-definitely Aido, Ryan, Jordan and Mattie. In fact, I think we should have given game time to players needing minutes and fringe players and be fresh going into the Sligo game and also send a strong message to GAA HQ to end this scheduling farce.

Anyone hear jarlath burns speech ? I’m trying to figure out a tweet by John fogarty

“ There are Mayo winners in the county board executive. A pointed message from GAA president Jarlath Burns in his speech.

I think our president is becoming way too much about the drama for my liking
Wasn’t expecting to win but disappointing performance none the less. Still very hard to tell where we are at.

That jersey reminded me of a Çùl Camps top or a training jersey..It's dreadful..How that made it into a kit bag for Croke park baffles me..

Disappointing day in the office yesterday. What was most galling for me was that we went back to the turgid passive football of last year and earlier in the league.

We all know that this squad is nowhere near what we had in the last decade but the level of regression under this management is shocking.

3 years in and signs are we are at best stagnating, but more likely getting worse and open to a very big beating if we play any of the big teams during the Summer.

I don't hold out much hope for 2025. Get the job done versus Sligo and hopefully we can give a Connacht Final a right rattle. Could Stephen Rochford finally coach a team to a Nestor Cup after so many goes?

However, any All Ireland championship game against a Division 1 team, or Roscommon, Cork or Monaghan from Division 2 will be a 50/50 tussle. I think we should be better than that.

We may have already achieved our pinnacle for 2025 in maintaining Division 1 status. And that is no bad thing. The (hopefully) new management will have a good starting point, and a crop of young players to hopefully start making their way. But they would have a huge task - tactically, conditioning wise, player development and unity of purpose have all been sub-standard under this management damaging the strong structures that James Horan had developed from 2013. We are at square one.

Overall our backs did a good job. We were very poor at mid field (and they were missing DOC), lost the kick outs and dirty ball. Our forwards were under pressure from relentless tackling but we missed a good few sitters which you cannot do against a team like Kerry. Not too many positives from yesterday including a few injury worries picked up. Has to be a learning experience particularly what it's like to play in Croker on a fine day against likely all Ireland finalist (is my prediction at this point!). Was there in person yesterday, lovely day but hard to get an atmosphere.

Apart from the management, the ref. the jersey colours and the cursing, anyone else think the clock going forward and players missing one hour's sleep might explain the lethargic performance. Who's responsible for logistics?

S

Shuffly Deck says:

I liked the jersey design. It may not be any help to the colour blind affected, I don’t know. Do they run the jerseys of the 2 teams past a selection of those impacted? If not, it should be brought in.
I thought it looked modern and stylish. However given the flags of the 2 teams and confusion for neutrals or foreigners, surely a reversal of shades whereby one team is predominantly white and the other dark would solve it or one with stripe and the other without.
Was this issue such a problem 30 years ago?

Shuffly Deck says:

Can ball mopping be coached or is it in a players DNA. Kerry had Paul Galvin and we had Kevin Mc and J DOC.
They were definitely more hungry for ball than us, can’t lose that many 50 50s without that being the case.
It’s one thing hitting 50 50 kickouts (Reape should be stacking the deck more often ) and another being ready for the scrap when it breaks.
On another note why isn’t Management putting Aido in for the throw in (changing 70 30 odds to 50 50 at best). We lost both again yesterday. Kerry kicked their first point after 10s.
I’m not normally overly critical of management here but this weekend I am.

Willie Joe says:

That's definitely the way it should be done, Shuffly Deck. With Kerry wearing their primary strip, we should have worn a white jersey and dark shorts. As I keep saying, this isn't rocket science and it's so frustrating that the GAA doesn't seem to have the first clue about the simple things they need to do to sort the problem.

Jarlath Burns shouldnt be too smart, the way his County behaved on a team holiday this year was a disgrace. And just look at the state of Gaelic football at the moment, the Rugby was far better all round then the National League Final yesterday. Another thing after watching David Clifford yesterday with all the extra space with the new rules no way is he the GOAT, his diving and feigning injury was terrible to watch, No way is he better than Matt Connor,

Bonni Boyler says:

@ GlasagusDearg totally agree that we should have just fielded the lads that have not had a run out this year.
Give the League Final the respect it deserves (scheduling wise) or bin it. Part of me suspects Mc Stay wanted a good look at Kerry in Croker under the new rules with 90% of the Championship team but held back slightly to avoid risking injury before next week. Hopefully Reape is ok. They may fit some airbags to Clifford's jersey so he can operate without the annoyance of any bothersome tackles. The contrast between they way he is treated vs Aido is stark.
Didn't like the Reek jersey initially but its growing on me. Surely it would be better in white, looking back at some of the stray passes yesterday, I'm hoping it was the slight jersey clash that caused this, or maybe the blinding sun on the Cusack stand.

1981 jersey still the best Away kit we have produced and it 44 years ago, while we have now have a tacky navy training top with pink and green trim which is supposed to be Croagh Patrick??, The sad fact is someone actually got paid to design that terrible jersey.

It was a poor performance against a kerry side that weren't really playing that well.
Kerry missed a lot of scores and should have won by more then six points.
The reality is Mayo aren't going to win the All-Ireland in 2025 we don't have the scoring forwards to win.t's as simple as that. Most people that know there football knows that we aren't good enough.

Sam Og - previous alternative jersey was designed by a 6 year old. I suspect this one was too. The shorts were definitely designed by a child.

A number of lads should have been rested as a few posters noted.

Dumb really - this competition is a liability - it should have been treated as such with a chance for a few fringe players to have a run.

@Sean Burke, yes I did hear Jarlath Burns speech . I wonder was this part of his speech praising 'The Mayo County Board' a type of reply to a letter he may have got from Mr Postman? The contents of which were widely shared on social media. Anyway there were more seagulls in Croke Park than supporters to hear what Jarlath said on the subject.

Conspiracy.
It seems to me that Mayo players have been instructed to slow the game down until the opposition get their defence in place. They come soloing/rambling up the field waiting until the oppenets defence is nicely settled. Only then to start this over/back/across stuff...I ask!! What is wrong with kicking the ball into the full forwards. There is no offside in Gaelic yet the full forwards come running out lto join in running-in-circles chaos..leaving big spaces inside...why??? I am not an expert but I am a loyal supporter and would love to see a bit of football.

Tirawleybaron says:

Terry
The style of play you describe is a brain child of Donie Buckley.
The idea is that you bring everyone into a line across the 45m line (almost like a line of scrimmage), creating space inside for a half back (or forward losing his man on the turn) bursting through the line and into the space.
Mayo used it to great effect in 2013 and 2014.

The problem with is now is (a) we dont have as good a half back line and (b) the game has moved on and (c) this should be a last resort when play has slowed down, not a reason to slow the game down

The Mayo defenders and midfielders don't even look up to kick the ball forward when turning ball over in defence.

In the current 3v3 rules, there is a ocean of space available to kick the ball into, so that should be what you are trying to do as soon as your win ball in your own half.

However, when you start with 7 club midfielders (Stephen Coen; Jack Carney, Matthew Ruane, Conor Reid, Jordan Flynn; Aidan O’Shea, Frank Irwin) and no natural half forward at all, you don't have anyone who can kick ball forward accurately.

Mayo eventually brought on 4 forwards
Darren McHale for Conor Reid (33), Paul Towey for Frank Irwin (42), Davitt Neary for Jordan Flynn (45), Diarmuid O’Connor for Stephen Coen (63),
But it was too late, the team had resigned themselves to another Croker Park defeat with 20 mins to go.

Indeed, in selecting 7 midfielders and only 1 scoring forward, the manager had accepted we couldn't win playing football and picked a team to win possession and kick wides.
Even with all those midfielders, we got caught on a short kick out and lost more than half our kick outs.
The game plan was flawed and then backfired spectacularly.
