The second round of the Mayo Intermediate club championship got underway under the Friday night lights at Flanagan Park in Ballinrobe.
Rob and Mike were both there to watch the first adult county championship meeting of these two South Mayo neighbours since 1975.
Here’s their on-the-whistle summary of how the match unfolded.

Coverage was good . Kilmaine were poor and Ballinrobe will have to improve loads in order to get back to a county final. ,but in fairness it was a local derby si lots at stage . Middling quality but worth the €10 .. Well done Mayp Gaa TV

Watched on mayo gaa tv too, brilliant coverage didn't cut or freeze once ballinrobe is one of the best venue's to watch a game in mayo, ballinrobe look very good, really well comditioned, fast and loads of good ball players and aren't reliant on one forward, last week duffy and liam burke where the main forwards and it was joe burke and kevin quinn last night, gilraine definitely could be in with mayo next year he's a powerhouse.

Posted on another thread last night. Watched the game. It was entertaining and played a full champiosnhip temp, but watching it from a 'Mayo supporter perspective' (because I have no real affiliation with any club), there was nobody had a standout performance. Have to remember it's Intermediate so the basic conditioning of players is different. Kilmaine's defence was really poor. Ballinrobe kicked 2-16, but missed a tonne of chances which has to go down as wayward shooting rather than anything Kilmaine were doing. Like I said, it was an enhjoyable enough watch. Ballinrobe has far more pace throughout the pitch and as you go down the levels in club football, having speedier players will give you a huge advantage. But anyone on the pitch last night with county aspirations (and there are some) would need to be playing better, being more influential that that showing. Again, it's intermediate football and county players should be head and shoulders above the rest.

Mayonaze... Are you not originally from Mayo or how could you not be affiliated with a club ?
You do comment alot on the County Team and management..
Often times at club level our best backs are marking our best forwards,, for example Paddy Duncan could be marking Diarmuid O Connor and kinda nullify each other ... neither would stand out .

@My Ball you don't have to be affiliated with any club to be a mayo supporter or from mayo people move away or grow up in other counties but still support mayo!

Hi My Ball, yes I was born in Mayo…we left when I was young (before the age of playing for a club) but I always remained ‘true to the cause’…I’m following Mayo religiously since the mid 80’s when I was a kid. A close relative of mine captained the senior Mayo team back in the day too, so it’s always been something there and anytime I cross the border to Mayo I feel like I’m home.
Ballintubber would be the club I’d look out for as that’s where my stock would be from for centuries, literally, Ballyglass in particular.

On the topic of standing out and top players marking one another, of course I’m aware of that and I’d take it into account when forming an opinion of a player’s performance but just in the B’robe match last night I don’t think anyone went to a level where they stood out and as someone else commented on a previous thread, recently, and it’s true for the most part, a player looking to play senior county should be head and shoulders better at intermediate level…in terms of speed, skills, conditioning and overall influence on proceedings. There’s a significant between club football and intercounty, but it’s massively the case when you drop below senior club level.

Mayonaze how did the 5 extended senior county panellists look from Ballinrobe, as you you nullifying works to a point but Kilmaine did not have 5 lads on county panel.

I watched the match on MayoGAA. Not a bad match Ballinrobe by far the best team especially in the 2nd half. I don't think any of the Mayo extended panel really stood out compared to their team mates! I think it was Joe Burke who was named Man of the match- don't think he is on the Mayo panel?

Darragh Byrne and Neil Hurley from Claremorris both minors 2 years ago look very good indeed. Still young but huge potential le cunadh De

@Gizmobobs…none of them had games that they’d say themselves were particularly good but you can’t judge from one match. Anyone can have an off day or even an average day. However, at intermediate club level, you’d need to be far better than average on a consistent basis if you have any hope of making it at senior county level.

Ballina beat Balla by the exact same score as Mayo beat Galway 3 in a row team in the 1967 Connaught semi final.
Showing my age but that score is etched into my memory.

Jesus castlebar where desperate altogether, garrymore deserved to win, the westport mayo gaels game was a brilliant game but in the last 10 mins westports strength and depth shone through they finished very impressively, Claremorris shot 21 points the first day out and only 8 today, just goes to show every game is different. Ballina v westport will be a great watch in 2 weeks and potentially could be a dress rehearsal for the County final too

Castlebar will win nothing playing that kind of defensive rubbish they are playing at the moment. It isn't that they are short of talented players. They have plenty of good players - Barry Moran should be putting a system in place to exploit there football ability - and not paradise the team with their style of play. Garrymore deserved at least a draw from the game.

I had a problem on Friday night and a nice man from Knochmore called me and sorted it out. Mile búiochas to Jonathan.
Tonight match was extremely poor! No one put their hand up from a county team perspective !
Very few young players coming through it seems to me! Maybe I wrong the names are all familiar and a lot from both teams have played for Mayo- great servants to their clubs no doubt ?

Said it before but paddy durcan did so much work with Mitchell's he's a leader in so many differnt ways and a massive loss to them.
Looking like a Ballina /westport final even in early stages.

Barry Moran has been a really dissapointing manager, the biggest and most talented club in the County and he has them playing that rubbish.Mitchels need an attacking minded manager to get back to the top again.

Wow such natural and sharp football in crossmolina.
Conor Reid is a talent and will make no 12 his own next season , oozes class can run and kick at full tilt .... had the better of jordan flynn all day .
James Maheady remains that maverick forward Mayo are crying our for in my opinion and then coggins is like peadar gardiner but couldn't belive how good conor Reid was.

Exciting second half comeback in Garrymore. Garry could and should have won it. Castlebar woeful. Byrne cost them the win. Why are keepers all going on day trips up the field nowdays? Both teams very defensive at times. Shooting was shocking from both. A poor advert for Mayo football.

Referee. Paul lydon in garrymore was really good, gave no soft frees and got the big decisions right.
On Friday night in ballinrobe, garryowen McMahon was equally good.

Of the 3 games yesterday I got a look at Kevin McLoughlin was probably still the best footballer on show! Young Beirne done quite well in second half when his original marker went off injured. Caolan Hopkins another very strong showing for Knockmore with 7 points. People need to stop talking up young lads, let them grow and develop. To be 17-19 and make senior county panel you'd really need to be something else altogether. Let young lads develop in U19/20 panels for now and see how they grow.
Hard to judge much in the Garrymore Castlebar game as it was such a turgid negative sort of affair. Castlebar some good speedy backs that can hurt running from deep like McMonagle.

@Cp well baffling decisions is right.. how a certain Ballagh player didn't get sent off near the end was unbelievable, and the Belmullet player that got hit was the one that got booked!! Games can change on decisions like this as Belmullet found out to their cost against Claremorris.. overall Ballagh were the better team though and deserved their win
