1. Counter Donegal’s Defensive System
Donegal, under Jim McGuinness, has reintroduced a compact defensive structure reminiscent of their 2012 All-Ireland-winning strategy. This system involves all players retreating into a tight defensive shape, making it challenging for opponents to penetrate. In their recent matches, Donegal has been effective in limiting scoring opportunities, with opponents struggling to convert chances efficiently .
Mayo's Response:
Quick Ball Movement: Utilize swift ball circulation to exploit any gaps in Donegal's defense.
Off-the-Ball Runs: Encourage forwards to make dynamic runs to create space and disrupt Donegal's defensive setup.
Long-Range Shooting: Given Donegal's defensive depth, Mayo should consider taking calculated long-range shots to stretch the defense.
⚔️ 2. Midfield Battle
The midfield area will be crucial in dictating the game's tempo. Mayo's midfielders, such as Mattie Ruane and Aidan O'Shea, possess the physicality and skill to dominate this sector. Controlling the midfield will allow Mayo to launch effective attacks and limit Donegal's possession.
Mayo's Strategy:
Aerial Dominance: Focus on winning kick-outs and breaking ball situations.
Link Play: Establish a strong link between defense and attack through midfield transitions.
🛡️ 3. Defensive Solidity
While Donegal's defense is formidable, Mayo must ensure their own defensive structure is equally robust. With Donegal's forwards, like Oisín Gallen, posing significant threats, Mayo's defenders must be vigilant and disciplined.
Mayo's Defensive Plan:
Man-Marking: Assign specific defenders to key Donegal forwards to neutralize their influence.
Zonal Defense: Implement a zonal marking system to cover space and intercept passes.
Pressure on Kickers: Apply pressure on Donegal's kickers to force hurried shots and reduce scoring efficiency.
🎯 4. Offensive Flexibility
Mayo's attacking strategy should be versatile to adapt to Donegal's defensive tactics. In their previous encounter, Mayo started strong but struggled as Donegal's defense tightened. A flexible attacking approach will be essential to maintain offensive pressure.
Mayo's Offensive Tactics:
Varied Attack: Mix short passes with long balls to keep Donegal's defense guessing.
Utilize Width: Stretch Donegal's defense by using the full width of the pitch.
Clinical Finishing: Ensure high conversion rates from scoring opportunities.
🧩 5. Psychological Resilience
The mental aspect of the game cannot be overlooked. Mayo's ability to remain composed under pressure, especially in tight situations, will be crucial. In their last encounter, Mayo's early lead was challenged by Donegal's resilience. Maintaining focus and discipline will be key to securing a win.
Mayo's Mental Approach:
Stay Composed: Maintain focus during critical moments.
Positive Mindset: Encourage a proactive and attacking mindset throughout the game.
Adaptability: Be prepared to adjust tactics as the game evolves.
By implementing these strategies, Mayo can enhance their prospects against Donegal. A balanced approach that combines defensive solidity, midfield dominance, and offensive flexibility will be essential in navigating Donegal's tactical setup.

Willie Joe they say it will make many journalists redundant. I don't see it as a threat to you. No technology can replace your passion for Mayo football. But we need to be aware and embrace it rather than resist it. I am an old man and remain amazed at the rate of change. But nothing can replace the soul of Mayo culture including our passion for our native game. Tic Conaill looms on the horizon. We are the the descendants of Grainne Mhaoil, the Tir Ailles, the de Bourgos, the O' Mailles, and all our ancestors. We represent all that is gone before us. Let us do our ancestors proud and defeat the Tir Chonails. .Apologies for any mis- spelling.

Need leaders on the field on Sunday. It's gonna be tough. First big knockout game of the year. Play with courage and a cold headed lethal intensity as they did against Tyrone and this game can be won. No silly mistakes, no black or red cards. Fight like dogs for every ball on that field and that's all the supporters can ask for. That's what Donegal will bring, let the Green and Red prevail

Nigel gave a fair but optimistic view on the game. For a variety of reasons the squad are getting better as the year goes on so big prize here if we can proceed.
We know it's a big challenge but apart from the JMcG factor and the 2 pointers, this is essentially the same Donegal team we bet in the championship a number of years back. Good luck to the lads tomorrow.

McGuiness will not be relishing playing in Roscommon. Perhaps the gaa were listening to his repeated refusals to play in Croker and "rewarded" his majesty accordingly? He'll know it's Mayo's stomping ground and will attempt to stifle the crowd. It's really Mayo's only advantage as far as I can see and they need to make it work from the get-go. Donegal's imperiousness at frustrating alleged better teams is history now.
Thwarting Gallen, hoping Patton is still injured, and stopping O'Baoill getting near the arc..... that's how they'll be beaten. All rather easy, or so it looks in print. Mayo need to keep discipline an imperative. Donegal are masters at riling and harrying the opposition.

The messiah has dropped his keeper completely, having watched that Tyrone Donegal game again, it’s hard to pin everything on him, first goal the defender looked to have clear called it, the second Tyrone goal Kilpatrick went on a jolly without so much as a tackle laid on him.
If we bring intensity, mark Langan at midfield and avoid giving away free kicks that Murphy will pop over for two pointers all day, we can beat them, however, if we don’t do all of that and bring the intensity from our own Tyrone game we are going out. We certainly shouldn’t fear them, I’d like to see us take on a two pointer or two, working the likes of Flynn into a pocket to shoot, it will give Donegal something else to think about and drag their zonal defence around the place.

A few points on recent posts.
This obsession with knowing who close certain players like Tommy are is pointless. If management think he close and it gives the recovering player motivation and the panel more competition to think about that’s a good thing. If recovery doesn’t go fully to plan so be it.
I see merit in holding Neary back because it’s been pointed out how poor Donegal’s scoring stats near the end of close games are. If we’re even close to them on the straight Neary could bag a goal or another penalty by running hard at them.
Also agree with man marking Murphy and tracking Langan. So much of their good things comes through those 2. It means other Donegal players will play better but that’s fine. Langan is capable of 6-8 these days with 2 pointers.
Discipline has been mentioned with Murphy’s 2 point free prowess. Very much agree that we have to be very clever with our tackling. This needs drilling into Dawson in particular but the team generally. Put them under maximum pressure but don’t give their best shooter a free shot. Hard to do when serious intensity needed but the message of frees needs to be there from management.
If Patten doesn’t start, bomb a good few into Aido early and try to cause some panic.

I agree in relation to discipline. Dawson gave away a couple of needless 'pull back' fouls from scrabble positions. He's a smart lad, will know full well they marred an otherwise performance v Tyrone. He's also a very good left footed freetaker.
In terms of discipline, I'd be as concerned about Flynn and Neary. Flynn has been living on the edge for sometime, not totally his fault, should have been rested after club season.
We're all shooting in the dark here in that we have no idea of the starting 15, other than it will not be those named. Hopefully the 26 man panel is accurate.
Maybe the AI guys would give us an analysis from a Donegal perspective. Might give us something to talk about.

The thing is in any of the analysis I've seen where Mayo have been tipped, the reasoning has been because of mayos chaotic nature and unpredictability.
Its not really a sustainable commodity is it, relying on bamboozling the opposition with your inconsistency, might win us the occasional one-off game but as we have seen with this team in the past 3 years it doesn't offer any sort of consistency one day to the next.
At some point you need to look like a team who knows what they are doing if you are to be taken seriously as contenders
I'm tipping Mayo as I always too but it's entirely heart over head. All logical sensible arguments would lean you towards a donegal win
Shuffly Deck says:
June 14, 2025 at 2:56 pm
No issue with Flynn or Neary or anyone else conceding frees by being fully committed out the field, sometimes need to put body on the line but not within Murphy’s range. I didn’t realise Dawson was a good left footed free taker. Haven’t had a reliable one of those in a while. Looked so two footed the last day I thought he could be either a leftie or rightie. On the same not Darren McHale has a good shot, is left footed and starts most games. Is he being asked to do them in training to see how consistent he would be? In any event Ryan takes them from the wrong side apart from out near the sideline although I think he missed one or 2 this year. Aido has the range from the sideline of his left and if we need to go for such a score and it’s outside others’ range I’d let him take those. Low % chance, maybe 33% but worth a go if we’re stuck.

Supermac, in the last podcast, Nigel Reape says that he believes Mayo are improving, and are on a trajectory of getting better.
He believes that if Mayo were to win and go into the quarter finals we’d see more improvement from them.
This is convincing to me.
What seemed as inconsistency to now can actually be subsumed into a view of the team as moving upwards.
Supermac says:
June 14, 2025 at 3:15 pm
What's that belief based on though swallow? Would need a bigger sample size to support that theory.
Is it based solely on the game in Omagh or the previous game where we can tanked by cavan or the game v Galway where we were excellent in patches and absolutely abject in patches
Our inconsistency/unpredictability is both our trump card and ultimately the thing that will cost us the biggest prize
Ontheditch says:
June 14, 2025 at 3:22 pm
Neary black carded v Cavan, should have been substituted after sin bin imo, but was effective off the bench v Tyrone. Flynn lives on edge, needs to focus on his game. Dawson two footed but left footed free taker at underage, can score from distance. As can brickenden if he can be set up...and if any of those start, we just don't know.
@tirawleybaron can you ask the AI man to do a report from A Donegal perspective. Be interesting to see where the Mayo threat comes from, I'm sure AOS will not go unnoticed, but I would have advantage Donegal at midfield.

Win and we have 2 weeks rest.
Win and in that Quarter Final we won't be playing Kerry, Armagh,
Galway, Tyrone or Donegal.
Which of the others are we not capable of beating in that Quarter Final ?
We're looking at a big chance of playing in an All Ireland Semi here.

Agree with you there Joey and maybe our grand masterplan is coming together.
Win tomorrow especially if it's because we play well (rather than Donegal being flat),and we'll be right back in the conversation... whether we like it or not.
Ok so we had the hump after losing the Connacht, and grew the second hump after losing to Cavan but they don't have to be season defining,(how ironic will it be if Galway don't make it through after the wild celebrations of the CF). Connachts were never of much interest to Rochie, and maybe not to the players either.
We got this far without Tommy and should he appear on a team sheet for a qf, what a boost that would be. So maybe our peak is being timed to hit in around now...as Stephen Coen said there's no team showing great consistency yet.
I think we can do the biz tomorrow.
Hup Mayo.
Swallow Swoops says:
June 14, 2025 at 4:17 pm
Supermac, I don’t think it’s based on any solid evidence to say we are likely to be improving. It’s circumstantial and taking outside factors into consideration and that’s convincing enough to me.
We don’t need to peak in April. I think we’ve known this with Mayo going back ten years. We haven’t needed to put in the big performances yet. It would probably have been a waste. We need to be giving performances from now on, and the team and management likely know that.
The challenge every year recently has been to break out of the group stages unscathed. Then the big boys’ football starts. I think our management team has always wanted to go past the group stages to show what we can do but haven’t managed it.
Instinctively, I feel that we have a lot more developmental potential and stretch within ourselves. Would ye agree?
In the past, we have improved as we’ve gone on.
Nigel made the point that he thought we’d see improvement if we got through to the next game past Donegal. If we managed it, we’d have a clearer run and scope with a two week break behind us.
It’d be great to get the chance, wouldn’t it?

Galway come in clutch once again. Not going to be easy to come down from a big performance like that. As we found out last year.

Brilliant stuff by Galway but all pointless tbh as they would have went through as Derry lost and they had the upped hand in score difference .
Who can Galway draw now for prelim , Kerry ? Donegal (if they win tomorrow , if not Tyrone ) ?
Justoutsideballagh says:

You have to give it to Cluxton. So calm and able to pick out his man in an instant. Dubs still not out of it. Wide open. If Mayo beat Donegal, as good a chance as a anyone but a big if. We need a 100% improvement again tomorrow as Tyrone were not at races last game.

The commentator in the Dublin Derry game was trying to frame it as some thrilling finish, which is his job I suppose, but it was hard to get excited given Derry were a beaten docket from quite a bit out from the final whistle. The scoreline made that game seem closer than it was in reality.

Fair play for giving the ticket to his young one I would have of I could !

So if we do end up with a draw could we get Galway or Kerry in pre quarters assume we can ?
Finding Sam says:

Galway showed serious mettle in the second half and deserved to win. They put a lot of heat on Rafferty which isn’t an easy thing to do. Same with the Meath win earlier, under the new rules the team that dominates the kick outs tends to win the game. Over to us…
Clare says:

In fairness to Galway they did close out a really tight gane and showed their confidence in the last quarter

Let's say Mayo beat Donegal and Tyrone beat Cavan, also Monaghan beat Down and Louth beat Clare.
This will leave Dublin, Tyrone, Kerry and Down as the 2nd placed teams and Galway, Donegal, Cork and Louth as the third placed teams.
I'm guessing the draw on Monday morning could be like this
Dublin v Cork
Kerry v Louth
And the tougher draws,
Tyrone v Galway
Down v Donegal.

On we go...
I said when the group draw was made that getting out in any way would do..
I was worried at half time and PJ gave them some stick at HT..
The changes , Daniel O Flaherty and Conroy were excellent and to score 2 15 in the second half was brilliant..
Shane Walsh unreal...
They won't fear anyone next week..
Now for tomorrow's action.....

Bate the Blanket, Donegal have already played Down in provincial, but am unsure if that is a deal breaker.
Galway seem to keep finding a way. Sure as shit they'll get a poxy draw next week & will get Monaghan or Meath in quarters. If Monaghan beat Down
Mayotillidie says:
June 14, 2025 at 9:27 pm
The odds of either Monaghan or Down been only unbeaten teams in groups stages. What odds of that. And even they might draw with each other tomorrow.
It a weird year, every look vulnerable every second week, and could be a surprise package winner at end of it.
Makes it even more important to be still in draw on Monday morning.

Galway have the deepest squad in the country at the moment. Saying it all season. The draw is huge for them. They should be hoping down lose tomorrow and then get them in Newry (if im right on that). Kerry away or potentially a visit to Ballybofey would be nasty, but Galway are well seasoned.
Clare says:
June 14, 2025 at 9:46 pm
Galway well seasoned for sure .
Though if we beat Donegal tommorow against the odds ( like I think we will do )
Will everyone be saying oh Donegal we're flat like they did our win v Tyrone ?
We have so much potential.
Yes totally get the negative comments and I know my optimism can annoy some and I don't blame them !
I just think that wasn't Tyrone being flat last week it was us actually playing to our potential with our all Star captain Paddy Durcan back .
Still Mayo to win tommorow if we don't I will hold my hands up .
Just think there's another massive performance in our guys and tommorow will be the day .

Predicting results is nearly impossible now the two pointers and most kickouts going long has made a alot of games a lottery.would Armagh have lost that lead today if they needed a result who knows. There is no outstanding team at the moment so anyone that can get a bit of momentum in the next few weeks could win this .

@Rusty Bridges: Anything before a Provincial Final doesn't matter for pQF or QF draws (all previous meetings are only avoided where possible at the semi-final stage - until then it's just Provincial Final and Group Stage repeats avoided).

Well it’s do or die time now for this group now , I’m always the optimist but definitely realist when it comes to to this team and it will be a huge effort needed tomorrow, now as we have seen trying to predict score lines in this seasons championship is like predicting the weather but as a few have said our recent form compared to Donegal arnt on par , don’t get me wrong we have ever chance but a huge 55-60 minute performance is needed no doubt because Donegal will want to win this as much if not more , it’s up in the air we can do it and wish the team the best of luck that they can

Leantimes says:
June 14, 2025 at 11:02 pm
Watching the Saturday Game on RTE 2, I thought the very first score for Cork v Roscommon was kicked inside the big arc, but the orange flag was raised . I know the difference was only one point between 2 and 1,but there is a hell of a difference in trying to get a 2 pointer instead of a 1 point after the final hooter as Mayo found out in the Connacht Final , having been wrongly denied a 2 pointer ourselves in the Connacht final. One point at that stage had the first Cork score been correctly given as 1 point would have been enough to keep Roscommon in the Championship and put Cork out. The game I watched live on GAA+ was Armagh v Galway, what a topsy turvey incredible game it was. Plenty of brilliance and plenty of mistakes by both teams. Thats twice in the last few weeks Galway have came back from 8 points down, forcing a draw v Derry and a 1 point win v All Ireland Champions Armagh today , despite not converting either penalty. Some belief and resilience from the Tribesmen. They will be a match for anyone in the draw next Monday. Now the real important business is Com'on Mayo tomorrow.

Great win for Galway today. Armagh weren't going to make it easy. Where there's life there's hope. Pj made the call to change keeper and hold Conroy in reserve for most of first half - scored heavily in second half.
Hopefully, Mayo do the business v Donegal. Still a few dark horses left in the pack - Meath showed great promise today, and of course the Dubs beginning to build a cohesiveness.

I thought we were gone at half time. Armagh were really looking to put us out. Its like we need to be 8 down to start to play and changing the goalie backfired but at least Joyce had the bravery to make the change. That win will really lift the lads and while there are some potentially very hard games in the PQF we wont fear anyone, perhaps beating Armagh will kick start our season but that remains to be seen. Hard luck to the Rossies earlier they fought back well but snatched at a few 2 pointers with still 6-8 minutes left but Cork deserved the win. As for tomorrow I think todays games show anything can happen and its likely to be the same tomorrow, best of luck to ye in the Hyde tomorrow.

Any kind of a win at this stage of the season is good.
If Mayo win tomorrow they would be in a better place than Kerry. And the Dubs now too just creeping along under the radar and every game to come for them will be back in Croker. I was in Cavan today, Rob Finnerty is in the form of his life. Made Paddy Burns looked like a junior B player, unmarkable this evening.

@Leantimes: Nahh. All good on that call. The standing (left) foot for O'Driscoll is outside. Even if the contact or ball itself was inside, once the standing foot is outside on or outside then that's all that matters.
3.1 - "... kicked by a player who has at least one foot on or outside the 40m arc and without the ball having been
touched by any other player."

Hope someone reminds James O'Donoghue that Kerry should be out for losing to Meath tonight after getting the softest group with no Division 1 team in it, and dont get me started on the painful Paddy Andrews who reckons Donegal are a WAY better team than Mayo.

Forget Paddy Andrews and James O'Donoghue. They're just paid faces in an infinite podcast stratosphere. If they said at any stage that Kerry would be overturned by Meath, there'd've been an inquest into possible substance abuse ordered. Donegal are favourites (justifiably) so let the talking heads sound off.

Before yesterday I’d have said Kerry and Armagh were the 2 teams looking most like AI winners. I’d still say the same about Armagh today, the were group toppers regardless. On Kerry it all depends on their injury list. If just resting key players fair enough but they’re now in jeopardy. I don’t know why Galway haven’t kicked on as they have a great panel but they do have a fighting spirit. Looks a tall order for them now to win 2 weeks running. Dublin would be a real threat to all if they could stop giving away stupid 50m move up frees and 3-4 rule and the likes. They’d be either unlucky or dumb for it to keep happening. Never deserved to be written off but 2 weeks running could undo them too. Meath now find themselves in with a great chance of a SF. A great footballing county who’ve been 2nd tier for far too long.
As for us, bookies have us -3 but Paddy Durcans return is huge. I’d say it’s worth 3 per game ignoring that he got 3 vs Tyrone, it’s the fact we have another leader on the pitch who does the right thing 90+ % of the time and can kick inspirational scores at the right time. I agree we have to keep improving but varying our tactics is helping. The keep ball the last day when needed phases was encouraging. A win has huge rewards, that’s how we should be thinking.
