Mayo Football Podcast episode: County Board meeting musings

The delegates of the Mayo GAA Board met on Monday evening at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park in Castlebar.

On top of the agenda was the Mayo senior manager appointment process and some of the issues arising from the recent decision to ‘relieve’ Kevin McStay from his role.

Mike was at the meeting and he joins Rob on the pod to discuss what was said – and by whom – on a night when Mayo GAA officers and club delegates met to begin the process of moving forward.

This new podcast episode is now online and is available to our club members on Patreon. To get access to this show and to all our other great content, for as little as €1 a week, join the club HERE.

Did the PRO - whose job it is to write these statements - explain the statement?

Surely his position is untenable at this point

C

All managers gone now, what's going on behind the scenes, maybe David Heaney for Senior job, would be happy with him.

It seems people from outside Mayo have a very strong influence as members of the executive.

The process to appoint a manager looks set to be a disaster unless the Board can actually talk somebody into applying. Already there is a lack of transparency or focus. It may take 5 weeks, but could be 6 weeks, if not it will be 7 weeks. I'll wager it goes beyond 10 weeks.

Who with ambition and genuine top quality ability will put their head on the chopping block with this board by phoning them for an application form?

G

Gizmobobs says:

July 8, 2025 at 9:36 am

Warehousenumber5 sure the statement was written by the executive not the PRO alone, so the release would have been a joint decision. Even if it was not sure how that would make his/her position untenable.
- Management asked several times to go of their own accord, management refused.
- Board relieve management from position, thanking them sincerely for their efforts.

Sure it could have been worded slightly better, but not sure why the apology was needed. Should managers apologise to players if they give interviews where throw them under the bus etc?

@Gizmo
I'm scratching my head a bit the last few weeks. I don't see what else the board could have done here. A few more rosy words in the statement perhaps but apart from that......
Management were given the chance to jump and refused. Inevitably they had to be pushed. Mcstay backed them into a corner. He should have known full well his race was run and did the honourable thing.

Imagine the scene if the old management team were still in place. The board had buckled and given him a 4th year. They would be getting hammered for it.
I wouldn't know the first thing about the board but to me they they acted swiftly and decisively which was exactly what was needed in the circumstances.

The challenge for them now is to get the right management team in place.

I still maintain we're not a million miles away. We need to improve our attacking play which looked laboured. We were unlucky with Conroy who would have made a difference. We were decent enough defensively last year which gives us a platform to build on.

W

WarehouseNumber5 says:

July 8, 2025 at 10:16 am

Who says they were asked several times to go? You believe the rubbish wrote in The Connaught Telegraph?

Whats the point in having a PRO so? If all releases are joint ventures?

Kevin was going to step down anyways, everyone in the country knew it. But they wanted to be the big boys and do it for him.

Warehouse Number 5 - I’ve deleted the last bit of your comment as you’re making an allegation which can’t be proven and casting aspersions on an individual in the process. I’d also dial down the performative anger a bit if I were you. That doesn’t play well here, even if it is sadly the general trend online nowadays.

G

Gizmobobs says:

July 8, 2025 at 10:34 am

Warehouse no 5, not all releases are like that. Most match related items, team releases etc would be just the PRO bread and butter stuff.
A communication such as this, like in most organisations would go through a few people for approval.

Yes, I believe what was in the Connaught (surprising as that is), and also stated in other press items to the same effect. And also from taking to people involved.

Really everyone in country knew Kevin was stepping down? That's news to me. It's a wonder he didn't go so of his own accord before that even.

C

Clare says:

July 8, 2025 at 10:38 am

@Gizmobobs

Agree with you and I heard they were asked is well . Mcstay said that he hoped to be back soon . So I don't believe that he was planning to step down.

W

WarehouseNumber5 says:

July 8, 2025 at 10:43 am

Where is the proof that Kevin was given the chance to step down? Because reports in the local paper aren't exactly gospel.

The outcome, however foregone or not, has been spun to look like there's a consequential victim. It's tacit but very clever.
Let's get on with the matter in hand now and let the media be witch-finder-general in their quest for storylines.

W

Willie Joe says:

July 8, 2025 at 10:52 am

Warehouse Number 5 - please don't try my patience with BS about what is and isn't allowed here. If you make whatever points you want to get across in a reasonable manner then that's okay but the rest - which definitely does count as performative anger in my book - you can leave outside the door.

Gizmobobs - in relation to clearing press statements of this kind, that's certainly how it should be done but it's far from clear what was done in this instance. I think the content of the apology read out at last night's meeting reflects the fact that things weren't done as they should have been.

G

Gizmobobs says:

July 8, 2025 at 11:01 am

True WJ, think I took up that bit from a Colm Keys interview.

E

Ex-pat says:

July 8, 2025 at 11:09 am

I'm no defender of the County Board and, undoubtedly, their Press Release could have been worded better but they did the right thing in moving swiftly. The management team should have resigned within 24 hours of the Donegal defeat. It would have shown accountability and that getting dumped out at the prelim QF stage was just not acceptable. All they had to do was resign and then this pointless drama would have been avoided.

Compare and contrast with the approach of other Managers especially Dessie Farrell. He is a winner who sets standards and abides by them. At the moment that is far away from Mayo culture.

W

Willie Joe says:

July 8, 2025 at 11:12 am

That's still in the realm of what should have been done, Gizmobobs, rather than what was done. In any event, I think the apology read out last night draws a line under this unfortunate episode.

M

My Ball says:

July 8, 2025 at 12:10 pm

Agree WJ .. I don't live in Mayo but there was alot of talk of the way the County Board handled the whole thing . I think the fact that Kevin was off for a while on medical grounds may have added to it.
My fear is that this may in put off potential candidates from applying for what should be a very challenging but great job to get ,given the support we normally have and we are still in my opinion a top 4 or 5 team as we proved against Donegal.
Draw the line on the County Board stuff as they have apologised and focus on getting the best management team in place as soon as possible.

I’m not getting bogged down on the particulars of either side in the debate on how the Kevin mcstay situation was handled but what is very noticeable with Mayo all the time from every aspect is we really lack a togetherness , there’s a lot of individualism and egotistical nonsense, we really need to adapt a more unified culture, proud and resilient. Quit the bickering, move forward , we have some great talent n the way , I sincerely believe if brought together right and a bit of luck we can win an all Ireland very soon .

It will be 75 years next season . This has gone on too long for the love of god , stop and think look what McGuinness has done again with Donegal in a couple of years , the bursting pride , the togetherness, it’s the “we are Donegal to hell what the rest say “ that’s what’s he’s done , it’s not the exceptional skilled players , they’re decent but nothing in their arsenal like a generational squad but they have chance of winning Sam maguire , it’s quite remarkable imho .

(75 years and perhaps we should have a commerative jersey ,I’ve had a go at designing one and going to send it to elverys ) I know they’ll probably not pass a bit of heed but I think it’s great , white jersey with the old crest , 75yrs etc

Having all the management roles (senior, U20, minor) change at once seems a lot but it does offer the opportunity for a total rethink across all the links in the chain.

@Sean Burke i totally agree, unfortunately this episode shows there is significant egos at play in the county and as you stated no togetherness..... it much a do about nothing here in my view, unfortunately for Kevin and his team the time was up and writing on the wall etc. with the poor results and if they stood down after the Donegal game none of this would have materialized... CB had to take action and did, yes we can all debate and be offended etc about the use of language (God help us if we we living in the US at the moment!) but the end result is the same...change of senior team management. Apparently no delegate was calling it as the wrong course of action to have taken (which speaks for itself) at last night county board meeting according to the latest POD, so lets all move on and focus on getting the best management team in place going forward.... I'm hoping that an exciting club championship can now move us all on and back to the football and debating all of the exciting new talent we see over the next few months...

"a significant portion of the site near the adjoining road will need to be raised by ‘about a meter.’
There are also two areas described as ‘relatively small’, which have a peat depth of 0.7 meters, which will need to be ultimately removed. The amount of earth that will need to be removed has been described by representatives from Prunty Pitches as ‘quite challenging.’"

“Well over €1 million has already been spent on it and its onwards and upwards and the committee wants to come in to give us a full breakdown of where this is going."

https://www.mayonews.ie/news/swinford/1818450/onwards-and-upwards-for-bohola-mayo-gaa-development.html

Given planning not even in yet, the spend to date and the condition of the ground this if it ever flies will not be cheap.

@Gizmobobs: I've seen that "well over €1 million" figure mentioned before (by Councillor Forkan) but never any detail on what it refers to.

If I was to guess, I'd imagine that spend is more likely related to the Bohola Community Park themselves on the separate project they've entered into in the partnership with Mayo LGFA (where the work with Wills Bros. commenced back in '23). Though when it comes to work like lowering the water table, I'd imagine it could get pretty debatable (you might say muddying the [ground-]waters) where that cost sits in terms of balance sheets giving the links between the neighbouring sites.

Could they not just upgrade facilities at 2 or 3 different clubs around Mayo. Knockmore or Crossmolina are obvious example, where 1 or 2 million would go a long way to providing top class training facilities and then do something similar in Ballinrobe and or Islandeady. Might be better options of course, but it's seem like lunacy, to have lads making 4 hour return journeys from Belmullet to training in Bekan or Bohola. It's crackers, but no one on the CB seems willing to shout stop.

It comes back to the argument why was croke Park developed in an already clustered Dublin. GAA is a national sport, the national stadium and ancillary facilities should have been developed in a central location. Athlone to Tullamore and served by a rail system.
Following the same argument, a centre of excellence in Mayo should be central to the county and contribute to a more balanced development of the county. Lumping everything into Castlebar because it is the largest centre of population doesn't make sense to me.
Throw all the info into AI and see what it dishes out.
Should any centre of excellence be inclusive development for all sports. I think so and Sport Ireland should be involved. All politicians should present a united front on the matter.
We have two twin sisters in westport creating all kinds of national records in athletics and it represents a collosal achievement in terms of overcoming disadvantage.

Croke park is an historic GAA landmark and significant Irish cultural, spiritual and traditional site. Any suggestion that it should not have been redeveloped or the national stadium moved to bloody Athlone or wherever is total and utter nonsense.

W

Willie Joe says:

July 8, 2025 at 7:19 pm

The only reason he hasn’t, Mayonaze, is that those comments (which are still coming in at regular intervals) have now been redirected straight to the bin. Enough is enough is enough on that one!

O

Ontheditch says:

July 8, 2025 at 7:44 pm

@ yew _tree. That's your opinion. As for Croke Park being a significant cultural and spiritual site, is utter bloody nonsense. Some people are locked into bloody history. I suppose you are in favour of one goal end of the stadium not being developed and reserved for the dubs.
Every Gaelic football stadium in the country is a statement of our Irishness. The possibility of developing an Irish village which would host everything Irish from football to fleadhs was missed when Croke Park was developed.

Any centre of excellence should be exactly that, in the centre. Which means in and around Castlebar.
In Ireland around Snugboro would be ok if the place wasnt all bog.
That leaves the other side of Lough Lanagh - along the Westport road if someone could afford to buy that field west of the connacht boxing centre of excellence.
Add two pitches to Bekan and two at Lough lanagh and away we go.
Bohola is just a white elephant in the wrong place.

As for the clamour about McStay - there would be very little about it if he didnt have so many mates in the media from his RTE days.

Y

yew_tree says:

July 9, 2025 at 12:25 am

Ontheditch - Croke Parks Hill16 was not kept as a terrace for the dubs…that’s tin foil hat crap.

So an 80,000 seater stadium for GAA should have been built in some Irish village now? This is mental stuff.

On a more light-hearted note, the Mrs used to post on another site that would be seen as Dubs oriented and couldn't believe that one particular diehard was oblivious to Croker having been built before most of the houses on Clonliffe road. Reminded me of a Flann O'Brien ditty about the Yank complaining about Lismore castle being built so close to the "highway".

Sean Burke says:

Bohola isn’t that far from castlebar , not convinced by the venue not been central argument at all . Point is if you using that argument about distance from Achill /blacksod etc , castlebar is only a twenty min drive to bohola

It's a decent question to raise.
The basic maths are we are in debt and have no, zero, none, nada scope for any future financial failing.
It's as near factual as one can get that without full funding and a guarantor for financial overrun the COE project as outlined cannot proceed.
Even if you get 15 million of full funding debt free tomorrow, it cannot proceed. If the project overruns to 17 million we don't have any leeway for that 2 million overrun.
Now, it's pie in the sky to be thinking we have debt free funding.
This COE project needs stopping by Croke Park.

E

Eastcorkexile says:

July 9, 2025 at 7:42 pm

Recent attitudes from central council show that Croke Park will no longer allow county boards to break ground on these big schemes unless they actually have the money, and only a tiny amount of that can be financed. So if it’s to be 15M, unless we have 15M, the GAA will not green light it.
You can research Kildare and Louths proposals over the last couple of years for evidence of this, in my view, correct, policy.
