Action in this year’s club championships got underway this evening, with Aghamore drawing with Breaffy while Ballintubber edged out Charlestown in the evening’s two Moclair Cup clashes.
John was in Aghamore where he got the post-match thoughts of Aghamore manager Paddy Finnegan and his Breaffy counterpart Seán Deane. Rob was in Clogher and he spoke after the game there with Ballintubber’s evergreen midfielder Jason Gibbons.

@I would like to say: Nope. The stream yesterday was perfect throughout on this end. Not even a momentary stutter.

Yes. Kept showing "error" notice.

HT at sunny westport. 6points apiece. MG with breeze in second half but Adam Gallagher gone through injury. No Le Keegan, good two pointer from Dawson, free, but westport have a game on their hands

FT. Sport 1:18. MG 1:13
Westport go up a gear. Joey Holmes at 11 promising performance. Lorcan Silke covered a lot of ground, back from injury. Eoghan McLaughlin different class when he came on, sealed the result very quickly. MG tried hard but no cutting edge. Entertaining game, onwards and upwards

Mayo Gaels James Fleming.
Claremorris very disappointing tonight. Ballaghaderreen clinical up front, Claremorris with some silly shot choices. Best team winning. Deep in injury time.

Great result for Belmullet, not given a chance by many. Ryan O'Donogue different class!

Claremorris must break there supporters hearts, so much talent but also seem to just fall short, have to say I didn't realise how good ballagh are that was a really brilliant performance, kane philips wing back absolutely brilliant and obviously kuba absolutely brilliant so powerful and pacey with a great shot, also mcbrien looks like an overage player on the pitch the way he run straight through the Claremorris defence in the 2nd half, rolls Royce of a player.

Belmullet are as tough as old boots, some result for them.
Always able to lift it up at least 2 gears for championship, the way it should be.
Conversely claremorris continue to be less then the sum of their parts, a frustrating bunch. When is the last time they took down a serious team in championship

Watched Claremorris Ballaghdereen on Mayo GAA TV.
McBrien is some specimen in full flight. An incredible athlete. Seemed to pull up late in the game after one of his many driving runs. Kuba Callaghan is another that I can’t figure out. Seems to regularly score heavily from play, has size and pace and definitely has room to improve accuracy and score more from his possession. Yet never really seems in Mayo reckoning
As for Claremorris I felt it was more of the same as last year. Incredibly open at the back. Could have conceded 3 to 4 goals in that first half alone. As for the attack, ran out of ideas in the second half with a lot of wild shots. Ballaghdereen were able to sit in and get numbers back. Not sure if the hoped step forward from Claremorris will happen in 2025 based on tonight’s viewing
Ontheditch says:
August 9, 2025 at 9:58 pm
What position did McBrein play?
Willie Joe says:
August 9, 2025 at 10:17 pm
Two minor corrections to those results, ontheditch (both matches I was at): Louisburgh 0-10 Holly/Carra 3-7 and Kilmeena 3-17 Burrishoole 1-11.
Roco88 says:

I would say McBrien was out around midfield a good bit. He was certainly contesting the kick outs and at times was higher up the pitch as play unfolded. He’s good at timing time to break the line too. David Drake seemed to be playing 6 and Cunniffe was in the full back line
There was one run McBrien made where Dara Hurley was trying to track him and Hurley himself is a fast player but McBrien just left him for dead.

At half time in the castlebar v belmullet game, Gary boylan belmullet sub gave an exhibition of two pointers, off both feet. Worth the entrance fee alone to see a natural score taker. But there was no one marking him at the time, a bit like a game of golf.
Mind the House says:
August 10, 2025 at 12:02 pm
@Rober
I think Boylan had to give up the soccer because of a knee injury.
A welcome addition back to the Belmullet ranks though. Never any doubt about his ability.
A decent team put together at Belmullet. All of the O'Donoghues there and the likes of James Lavelle and Seamus Howard.

It really is the best time of the year as a gael.
Opening round of championship brings such excitement and promise for so many, im marooned in dublin with my club commitments these days but great we live in an age now where I can still see a few games online. Crazy the amount of draws over the weekend but plenty of shock results and guarantees things will be honest for a dramatic final day.
Things have come on so much in terms of club coverage, with pods/interviews and streaming. If I had one quibble to nitpick at it would be great if every club provided score by score updates of their games on twitter, some clubs v good at at.
Others terrible and can be hard to find club updates.
The only reason I remain on the cesspit that is twitter is for local club gaa updates

@Supermac: Had to laugh this morning. Colm O'Rourke pulling out the "now that Kerry are Champions and we've no football for 6 months" type of craic. Not sure what world some pundits (or former managers) are living in.

I'm perfectly happy that the county season wrapped up and there's club championship games in good weather. The September All Ireland finals had most club championship played in terrible weather. Some compromise of middle of August will push the club championships two weeks closer to the likely bad weather.
2 hops says:

A bit of a worry when the county town's 2 top teams score a total of 20 points in two pretty comprehensive defeats , albeit both missing a few starters.
Still time to turn it round of course but becomes a challenge now.

Huge results for Cill Chomáin against The Neale & Kiltane against Parke. Not sure too many would have predicted both of those.
Cross in a strong position at half-time against Garrymore despite being 1 behind. Gale of a breeze behind them in the 2nd half... but a real spicy game already ready to boil over at any moment so no doubt Garrymore will be looking to battle hard in the 2nd too.
CDR says:
August 10, 2025 at 4:29 pm
Crossmolina probably left that game behind them with a very scorable free missed at the end. A very questionable refereeing display for both teams.
Ontheroad13 says:
August 10, 2025 at 4:37 pm
CDR ya the ref didn't seem to want the solo and go to be used at all, thought it looked clear at HT that cross where going to win by a few points but typical garrymore showed why they are such a battle hardened senior team, knockmore and ballina definitely looking very impressive with easy wins. The intermediate championship is unreal, davitts, the neale and parke all in most people's top 5 to win it out all failing to win, kiltane are dark horses for me very underrated team.

Thought the pick up off the ground decision against Loftus was daft. I watched back a few times on stream and can’t understand how it was a free. Some unusual decisions throughout the game from the ref

There would want to be some talent in Mitchels the fact they have 13 thousand people.
