Mayo Football Podcast episode: Club Championship Friday – in their own words

There was no shortage of Mayo club championship football across the county this evening.

John, Mike and Rob took in three of the big Senior and Intermediate games and watched the drama unfold in Ballyhaunis, Breaffy and Ballindine.

In this episode of ‘In Their Own Words’, we get to hear from Breaffy’s Aidan O’Shea and Seán Deane along with Castlebar Mitchels manager, Kevin Filan, after an absorbing draw.

We also talked to Garrymore’s Shane Nally and Parke’s Darragh Reilly after their respective teams’ away day victories.

This new podcast episode is now online and is available to our club members on Patreon. To get access to this show and to all our other great content, for as little as €1 a week, join the club HERE.

The Mayo Football Podcast has partnered with EBS — The Mortgage Masters — this season.

EBS are looking to hear from Mayo supporters who are living at home or abroad who might be looking for some mortgage advice.

Tense game at Breaffy but quality was poor.
Not sure how Aidan missed open goal at the end.
Neary should be doing more as a county player.
Madness leaving Ruane on with injury.
Conor Oshea excellent, mystery how he has been overlooked by Mayo.
Castlebar will feel hard done by overall. Strange decision from ref to blow up while on attack

Watched it...horrible. An awful game. None of the county players impressed. Aos was god awful....missed a goal picking up a rebound with keeper behind and kicked it 3 yards. Didnt even make line. Had one other chance. Paddy durcan and Conor o shea ineffective. Young mcgonagle did well. James durcan, davitt neary, Donnacha, mattie all average. Worrying. If o shea could score game was over. Livingstone missed 3 2 pointers. A horrible spectacle. 12-12

Solo and go, not sure about Conor, centre forward and didn’t really do much today like before to prove he’s inter county material, he’s gotten the chance on the scene but like many others, he couldn’t make it work in terms of county players, both sets of teams were left underwhelmed by their county players

Hijacking and promoting a competition pod but I highly recommend the Ah Ref interview with Diane O’Hora, it’s a very refreshing listen, I wish her and the whole team the very best of luck.

Westernfan - agreed he had chance before but that was in a mayo squad far superior to what we have now.
And last night maybe you missed the outrageous 2 pointer he kicked that was the only piece of quality in whole game. He also broke the line on a few occasions which nobody else did.
In contrast to players playing for the county , he looked better than they did .
For example, Neary starts for Mayo and not only did not score, he did not have a shot

Breaffy vs Castlebar was a poor game the County players on both sides were very poor especially Davitt Neary needs to show more for club. I have saw him play a few times this season for Breaffy and he been poor.it was clear Mattie wasn't 100% fit but he was vital for Breaffy chances as he won some important ball in the last 15 minutes of the game.
One player that did impressed me with his free taken was Pierce Deane his first effort out near the sidelines was as good as scored I have seen in any game it was superb. He was Breaffy top scorer with five points some of them tricky scores. He a young player that should be kept a eye on for future Mayo senior squad.
Castlebar John Mcgonagle is another young Talent that I would keep a eye on he had a very good minor and under 20s campaigns a good nonson's Defender.

Farcical scenes in Ballyhaunis at the start when the referee, John Walker, didn't even have a whistle, causing the throw-in to be delayed.

The one he got must not have worked then cause the second Garrymore goal never should have stood as a Ballyhaunis man was down with a head injury and Walker waved play on despite the head injury. Garrymore only got the ball off the injured player because he was on the ground.

Probably cost Ballyhaunis the win

Sam og and only like a 5 min drive from claremorris to mayo abbey, would have been ideal for a 5 and 7 throw in times, two good games that will have big crowds at them.

What was the result Ballyhaunis v garrymore

G

Gizmobobs says:

August 23, 2025 at 10:11 am

It would take some man or woman to organise to have every game on at different times between the three competitions.
- Have a minimum of two qualified refs available for all,
- ensuring no one needed involved works after half 3 on a saturday so can get there for a 5 throw in e.g. players, refs, linesmen, uno
- make sure it doesn't interfere with any other scheduled LGFA fixtures etc.
* Bear in mind clubs aren't meant to have other events on the pitch for something like 4hrs before a championship game to ensure maximum return on ticket sales
- nights are slowly creeping in so games can't really throw in from 8 on now as well.

W

Willie Joe says:

August 23, 2025 at 10:27 am

Garrymore won by 2-13 to 2-11, having been 2-8 to 1-3 down at half-time. East Mayo is spot-on, by the way, about the events leading up to the second Garry goal, which swung the tie in their favour.

J

Very difficult with fixtures now.
Same in intercounty.
A pub owner can only show one game on GAA go unless he buys a second subscription,, not the same with Sky.

A bit unfair.

Stop making excuses for them , only 2 Senior games today, alot of South Mayo would have wanted to see both games.

G

Sam Og, they usually struggle to get someone to take on the fixtures role.
You sound like you could be the man/woman for the job. Show them how it's done.

C

Cp says:

August 23, 2025 at 12:19 pm

There’s only 7 games today with 2 senior and there still on same time..
Surely it’s not that hard to put one at 5 and one at 7…
Be ok if the games are other side of county but when so close would be very handy for people to get to both..
21 refs needed today only…. A lot more needed on a Saturday night in the league albeit I know a lot of refs wull have 2 roles at weekend

G

Gizmobobs says:

August 23, 2025 at 12:20 pm

Looks like only had about 64 fixtures to coordinate the last 7 days sure.
Luckily for the thousands looking to see the two games they can go to Mayo Abbey and Watch the big game back on Mayo GAA TV.

G

Gizmobobs says:

August 23, 2025 at 12:24 pm

CP looks like on Mayo GAA have 11 fixtures on their website today if include underage, which also use referees.

The other point to consider is the main people involved, the players. Quite a few lads have jobs that entail working Saturdays. 5pm fixtures may not suit the players. They're the ones that need to be accommodated.

C

Cp says:

August 23, 2025 at 1:06 pm

Gizmobobs- 100% I have no problem if the game is at 7pm to suit the players but we know it’s not when the times were sent out 4/5 mths ago….
Kilmaine and louisburgh players could have work too and they're at 4.30….

G

Gizmobobs says:

August 23, 2025 at 1:15 pm

CP the day and times for this weekends games would only be issued a week or two ago. The master fixtures list issued a few months is what think you referring to. That tells you weekends of each rounds of the competitions only, not the day or time of the fixture.

G

Gillactico says:

August 23, 2025 at 1:16 pm

Nearys lack of form could be down to his injury issues this year. He's dynamic style was present in the early rounds of the League but iirc he didn't feature a lot in the latter half and missed chunks of the championship cumulating in a 5 minute Cameo in the Hyde before going off injured again.

S

Southmayo Exile says:

August 23, 2025 at 1:16 pm

Sam og - mabye some of the players from the four senior teams are working today Saturday and the clubs involved requested a 7 pm start time and refused to play at 5 pm.
Saturday is still a working day for a lot of people.

C

Cp says:

Gizmobobs- I’m 99% sure all times and dates were fixed for first 2 rounds soon after the draw….

Different story for round 3 where they haven’t been fixed yet

O

Ontheroad13 says:

August 23, 2025 at 1:46 pm

Lads there's two senior games on this evening both located in south mayo around 10 mins between the two grounds it wouldn't have been hard to have them on at different times so I can understand the frustration.

G

Gizmobobs says:

August 23, 2025 at 1:49 pm

On theroad unless both teams wanted 7pm to suit there players which is often the case.

CP I believe the provisional dates are issued months ago but CCC meet two weeks before hand to set dates etc. that work for both the clubs themselves and to suit Mayo GAA TV availability.

That's my understanding from when was involved with senior club team.

F

FreeTheEastBank says:

August 23, 2025 at 2:48 pm

Fixtures at 7pm are probably planned at that time months in advance because club teams know guys are working late.
It's worth considering that thos planning was done y good people for good reason....I stead of having the 'whoever organised this is an idiot' as a default position for everything

T

There is only 4 games between Senior and Intermediate championship today.Supporters especially neutrals want to watch the best games , just spread the 8 Senior games at least have 2 on the Friday at 7 like last night, 2 on the Saturday at 5pm and 7pm and 3 on the Sunday at 1pm ,2.30pm and 4pm, I highly doubt any player will work a Saturday of a Senior championship maybe 10 years or 15 years ago they did.The 2 intermediate games are at 4.30 and 5 today.Armagh and Kildare have Senior championship games at 2 o clock today.

Y

yew_tree says:

August 23, 2025 at 3:14 pm

The entertainment factor is found at Intermediate and junior. Mayo senior club football has been shocking the past decade and it’s worrying the new rules do not seem to have helped enough….still we wait and see if things improve.

G

Gizmobobs says:

August 23, 2025 at 3:18 pm

I won't argue that the fixtures couldn't be a hell of a lot better. But I wouldn't like to be one organising them.
Some Lads are indeed still working, not laying blocks or anything mad I'd imagine. But if go into shops etc. you'll often meet young panellists. Most the older dawgs would work their schedules around bits. But average age of players now is much younger, college or school age.

CB is far from perfect, I'm often a critic. But best thing people can do instead of moan is get involved, implement improvements where you identify them. That's how organisations grow and evolve. Moaning online alone won't do it.

G

Gizmobobs says:

August 23, 2025 at 3:33 pm

Yew tree I'd tend to agree, although I feel the rules have improved it a lot at senior level at same time.
Scoring is up.

Players have got to take responsibility, ye are ones in control of the ball & in the positions to have a go, this passing around the arc has got to stop. So many opportunities in last nights Breaffy/Castlebar game to shoot for either 1pt and 2pts & don’t or they are afraid to shoot in case management whisk them off.
Players must stand up & stand together on this. Guess what, I bet these lads knock over points for fun at their mid week training sessions. Don’t want ye to be wreck less but come on lads have a go and don’t be afraid of the consequences, you might be the hero.

Talk about a game with a bit of everything. Thrills, spills, drama with the officials, mistakes and some sublime scoring (Burke, Quinn, Convey and Roddy all with crackers that'd make a career highlight reel). Just when you thought it couldn't get any more chaotic, the next outlandish event would unfold.

Neither team got close to hitting top gear for quality or execution but a joy to watch a battle like that. Rare you walk away from a game thinking all 4 midfielders played really well.

Roco88 says:

August 23, 2025 at 9:13 pm

Ballintubber more than deserving winners. The 3-4 standout players they have are really class acts and were a good bit ahead of what Claremorris have to offer. Diarmuid OConnor and Michael Plunkett are chief architects of their play and just have a quality to them. Bryan Walsh too works really hard and is much more suited to wing back than half forward. Not sure what’s going on with Cillian but he was anonymous tonight

Another really poor display from Claremorris. Whatever it is, they seem to struggle to get fast ball into the forward line. A lot of over elaborate build ups with no real plan at times of what they are doing other than the next pass. They have actually regressed from last season.

As for the the younger Claremorris players in county underage setups, hard to make a case for them moving up to senior county level with the performances in the 2 games to date. Outside of those players, I thought the full back for Claremorris Fitzpatrick has battled hard in the 2 games and no 7 Matthew Macken certainly is physically well able to mix it

Balla way better than Gaels in a shock result. The Balla camp thought they'd give knockmore a rattle and were extremely hurt to lose badly.
Some reaction.
Oisin Cronin has the class of any forward in the county but probably never gonna be physically able to match it with the best.
Jude Clarke, David Dolan, Luke Flatley all outstanding also. 4 mayo u20 panelists starting in some going for a rural club.

G

Gizmobobs says:

August 23, 2025 at 10:00 pm

Retrocut wouldn't have thought Balla was a shock result, Bookies had it evens v 11/10. A real toss of coin game.
Did Gallagher play for Gaels? He went off injured the last day, if they were without him I'd have thought it was Ballas to lose as should be far to strong for them.

Was very disappointed with Claremorris again. Commentators were on about the age profile, but what's been the age profile of the teams that have won the last 5 years? Luke Feeney was in school when got MOTM in county final two years ago, and he was flanked by several other young guns, Regan and Clarke the main old heads. Before that knockmore team that won had mean age of about 21/22 with Mcloughlin and McHale being the outliers on older side.

J

Hurley & Beirne able to win ball but Claremorris were so slow to kick it in & that was a lot of their undoing. The Joyce lad at full forward for Claremorris in 2nd half added impetus to their attack

M

MATT DONNELLON says:

Adam Barrett was outstanding for Kilmaine this evening, at least 4 x two pointers in a 1-12 return, one two pointer from the sideline and another from about 10 meters outside the circle(at an angle into a slight breeze) and most of the rest from play including a few off the "weaker" foot.

Balla is not a rural club , very big population between balla and belcarra . Mayo geals wouldn’t have a 10th of the population, a proper rural club doin well in senior championship and every chance of staying in it . Other rural clubs in senior are ballintubber , Garrymore , aghamore , knockmore and don’t be surprised if one of them win it out

O

Ontheroad13 says:

August 24, 2025 at 7:42 am

MH you must have read my mind because when I saw balla been mentioned as a rural club I laughed, its a big big area and they have huge numbers at underage, mayo gaels are doing really well to be competing at senior level because there are a lot of intermediate clubs much bigger then they are, aren't they and davitts joined at underage too? Ballintubber are some operators though lads, new rules but still so good defensively

J

JoeG says:

August 24, 2025 at 7:46 am

I watched Breaffy/Castlebar on Friday. Eventually most of Claremorris/Ballintubber and the Ardnaree/Ballinrobe intermediate game was the only one worth the money. Both senior games were honestly dire and the 4 teams seem to be stuck in the past like the Mayo senior team of recent times.
Coaches need to wake up and adapt to the new game because the crap on view in both senior games is going nowhere. No excuses for wet and windy conditions or heavy pitches. The fault lies with coaching teams.

Y

yew_tree says:

August 24, 2025 at 7:47 am

While Kilmaine were excellent it has to be noted Louisburgh were shocking and based on teams and games I’ve seen so far I’d currently have them as on of the favourites to get relegated. Adam Barrett’s kicking was worth the entrance fee alone.
