Mayo Football Podcast episode: Chatting with Colm Keys

There may not have been any football played last weekend, but there is still plenty to talk about.
Mike and Rob are joined by Colm Keys of the Irish Independent to chat about the impact of the new rules so far and what the recent tweaks might mean for the game.

Colm also gives his opinion on Mayo’s recent performances and assesses their chances against Derry on Sunday.

And the lads look ahead to the sold-out rugby match at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park at the end of the month.

This podcast episode is now online and is available to our club members on Patreon. To get access to this show and to all our other great content, for as little as €1 a week, join the club HERE.

The Mayo Football Podcast has partnered with EBS — The Mortgage Masters — this season.

EBS are looking to hear from Mayo supporters who are living at home or abroad who might be looking for some mortgage advice.

Briefly met Colm once some time ago. A very big man, if I remember correctly.

He is that alright, GlasagusDearg! Big brain too, it’s always great to have him on the pod. He’s always worth listening to.

What is the 4 V 3 rule lads. Does that mean if the keeper wants to go forward, an extra defender has to sit back?

Bonnie Boyler, exactly that

@Bonni Boyler: As Damien said, spot on.

A few other recent tweaks made to rules this last week, along with that 4/3 change to keep an eye on.
https://hoganstand.com/article/index/335446 - outlines them as well as any I've seen.

Another last minute change for the coming games is the removal of the 20 seconds guideline for kickouts introduced in R3.

Shocking to see the poor communication continue with this change, with no official word from the FRC/the refs body/GAA. They're really not learning the lessons on these missteps, repeating them at every turn.

No clarification if they've also removed the guideline for frees (introduced for R5) or if that one still remains (questionable as it was given a couple of inter-county refs over games in R5 apparently weren't aware of it). The communications and decision-making since November has dropped off a cliff & really hurting the whole process (said as a big fan of most of the changes).

Thanks Damien and Tsu, heard Colm Keyes mention it on the POD and not really explain further.
Would expect the Super Keepers to be up in arms, but if your that good surely you should be playing further up the pitch and not masquerading as both. Very interested to see how it plays out.
Good to see clarification of the existing new rules and not another few thrown in for good measure.
Won't make Celtic park due to car issues but would have liked to tick another stadium off my " Never been to" list.
Hon Mayo, lets get a little revenge for last year.
