The Mayo senior footballers are taking on Offaly in a charity challenge match on Sunday, December 21st in Castlebar.
So the Mayo manager spoke to some of the local media this week to help promote the game and give an update on how his plans are progressing ahead of the new season.
Mike was one of those who talked with Andy about everything from his squad for Portugal to his hopes for 2026 – and a whole lot in between.

It will take Tsu stats and list of college goers but assuming Sigerson lads are cup tied and Kilmeena and Ballina rested maybe something like this to play Meath.
1 Hennelly
2 Coyne
3 Brick
4 Hession
5 Plunkett
6 McBrien
7 Kelly
8 Moran
9 O Malley
10 Boland
11 Barrett
12 Flynn
13 Kuba
14 Cillian
15 Ryan O D
Coen is to be married soon , and assuming the 20 something year old are in college maybe that be close to line up .

Great podcast . Andy is so upbeat it's infectious .
Great to hear that Oisin asked if he could go to Portgual maybe we will see him back in the future at some point. The Portugal trip sounded like it went well. As Andy said it was important for team bonding and good training sessions.
Good to get a challenge against Meath is well .

@ Outside of the Boot. Not a bad stab at the team in the circumstances. I would change McBrien and Brick, tho' Rory is unlikely to be considered as Andy included Westport among players to be given an extended rest. I like the idea of Plunkett at wing back, with his ability to kick two pointers. I think Andy will see the next two games as an opportunity to give a jersey to younger untried lads, instead of established players.

@Outside of the Boot: I'd say you won't be too far off the mark there. By the time you remove the college lads that played league this year (so safe assumption they'll play Sigerson or Freshers) along with the club rested lads and the school player, it lowers the options in a few spots pretty significantly.
Glancing at the players Andy has confirmed or that have been detailed in news stories as being part of a Galway challenge or reportedly on the flight to Portugal we'd probably be looking at choices between what you've listed (-Rory - DO'C or Paddy both options to throw in to the half-back line without much 'fixing') and:
Jack Livingstone
Adrian Phillips
Paddy Durcan
Diarmuid O'Connor
Ruairí Cullen
Brian O'Donovan
Bob Tuohy
Aidan O'Shea
Liam Donoghue
Matthew Ruane
Seamus Howard
Darren McHale
James Carr
Paul Towey
Ryan O'Donoghue
Tommy Conroy
Donnacha McHugh removed as Andy mentioned he'd be out for a few weeks yet after the surgery.
Possibly a couple more of the lads that wouldn't be 100% yet (hints on Cillian taking the time to get the body right, so sounded relatively unlikely we'll see him trotted out in December or January) and might not be in contention just now.

We've quite a few lads entering into, in the middle of or just on the tail end of their playing peak.
Smart usage of the bench and we can push our playing potential on field team ability up quite high.
I'm a believer in the concept of growing your dominance over the course of the game. If a player can be too class for 10 mins for the next three seasons let's keep them in the dressing room.
We're too quick to jump to "Oh they've only got 10 mins, this is their last season".

Donnacha McHugh s big player for Mayo, nothing fancy, but after he got injured against Donegal Murphy came into the game.

Good interview, very refreshing candour from a Mayo Manager, long may it last. Certainly enjoyable to look forward to the new year, with new players and talk of the importance of two pointers. I disagree about AFL players going to Portugal, I see no benefit when other club footballers could have gone, just my point of view, plenty others will disagree.
The honeymoon though will soon be over for Andy, league on the horizon and to win the fans back that he wants he needs to play a better brand of football than we were served up in the last few years. Plenty talent in the county to make us competitive.

@CDR: Two of the more surprising inclusions when that Galway challenge game list came out. Talented lads, but wouldn't have been common inclusions on too many short lists. I think they're among some of the lads involved drafted in for a look in the challenge rather than official members of the squad yet (Dolan, Clarke and a few others in a similar boat - probably explaining why they didn't feature in Portugal lists), but who knows what kind of impact they might have made. Especially when we'll be short a few bodies at the back from Sigerson.
Ruairi Cullen - Athletic and powerful wing back for Charlestown. Can't comment on this years form too much, didn't see him first hand or get many match reports featuring him, but has been in outstanding form the last few years and one that would have been very close to breaking in last year.
Brian O'Donovan - Tight man-marking corner back from Balla, with a lot of their success this year built around the solid work in that full back line (I'd have said the pod's own Ger the stand-out there with young Jude Clarke really impressive too) and would have been part of our '23 u20 squad. Great to see a wide net catching lads that wouldn't be on the tips of tongues, with performances earning it rather than reputations.

Thanks TSU - again.
Just love to see that phrase: 'tight man-marking corner back' and the follow up '...lad that wouldn't be on the tips of tongues, with performances earning it rather than reputations'.

Plenty of opportunities coming up for newbies to put their hands up. So challenge games/FBD will have a special interest. Glad to see the pitch at Charlestown getting a game

Impressed with the interview by Andy. Thoughtful, personable and open. Even the chat about injuries was useful to hear. Hopefully it’ll last through the ups and downs of the next few years!

He didn’t say anything about Eoghan McLaughlin being injured. That would imply he’s not in the panel as one podcast said he has a bad one.
