Mayo Football Podcast episode: A week is a long time in the world of Mayo GAA

Two big news stories broke this week relating to Mayo GAA, with Kevin McStay stepping back from his position as Mayo manager due to health concerns and an extraordinary county board meeting taking place on Monday night, which was attended by GAA President Jarlath Burns and Director-General Tom Ryan.

In this bonus podcast episode Rob is joined by Edwin McGreal and Colm Keys of the Irish Independent to reflect on these two developments.

The lads begin by discussing the significance of Kevin McStay having to step back from management duties, with Stephen Rochford taking temporary charge of team affairs.

Edwin then reports in detail on what was covered at the Mayo GAA county board meeting on Monday night, while Colm Keys reflects on the significance of the issues raised at the meeting.

This podcast episode is now online and is available to our club members on Patreon. To get access to this show and to all our other great content, for as little as €1 a week, join the club HERE.

The Mayo Football Podcast has partnered with EBS — The Mortgage Masters — this season.

EBS are looking to hear from Mayo supporters who are living at home or abroad who might be looking for some mortgage advice.

EBS have very generously provided two free tickets for Saturday evening’s match between Mayo and Tyrone at Healy Park in Omagh. We’re making these tickets available to one lucky Patreon club member and details of the competition for the tickets have already been sent to all of our club members.

At least it will be only true Mayo supporters that will be travelling. Not the keyboard warriors or pr*cks that were roaring personal abuse at the Mayo management during and after the Cavan game .

Absolutely excellent Pod.
Hopefully we can move on from here.
Lack of fund raising is incredible.
Hopefully the players can be boxed off from this.

@ Jr, looking forward to it now, normally stick on the Pod when walking the dog.
This is truly an Oasis of information and banter. (and a place to vent at times) I see it was even mentioned in the Western People. Fair play to all involved, your hard work, expertise and craic, is much appreciated in a world gone slightly mad.

@My Ball

I think the timing will be a massive factor for fans not travelling to the game. I'd love to go but just not possible I'd have to stay over night in Omagh really .

@Bonnie Boyler

A few were mentioned in western people who comment here to! Well done to everyone involved in the blog and podcasts it's really great to have especially in times like these!

Willie Joe do you know when was the last time we were this assured of defeat in the polls?

R

richardmgd says:

Not being one to criticise players, I simply cannot stand it. They give so much. of course the debate nature of the blog lends one to read others criticism and we all have our views but I cannot stand those views...blunt.
But when it comes to the county board this week, and the big lads from Croke Park rolling in with the 'look over there' approach and 'lets call in the cops' well by Jez if that doesn't take the biscuit rightly. Being sceptical and critical ain't the half of it. Travelling around to support the lads gets harder not because of the results, or the lateral hand-passing or the no 2 pointers. It gets harder because we are always missing that top 10% which a really well run organisation would deliver - will Offaly deliver a Leinster title within the next 5 years - I'd put a small house on it, they have put in a great first 5 years of transformation to date and by the time they get to 10 years they'll be in some sweet spot. We could be great, and whats more we don't need 10 years, 5 would bring us to a glorious spot...Will 'look over there' start us down the right road, like hell it will

Bb midlands says:

Interestkng richardmgd
Offaly cleared the whole house to start again. New county board and it took a few years to settle. Micael Duigan was a major factor there who really stood up and called for change. I imagine he got lots of abuse afterwards as the results didnt come immediately and the old board had their support. But really the biggest change for Offaly was Shane Lowry rowing in behind them and sponsoring them. That was huge to have him believe in you. He wasnt just a sponsor, he attended games. Im not sure if that happened because of Michael Duigan networking or from the Lowrys themselves. But Michael has approaced the job in a professional manner, has a bigger picture, and will deliver. When they are planning underage, they organise buses to get supporters there. Its great to see their flags out for these games but I am now seeing people following Offaly again. They are still holding their breath on Micky Heart though!
Mayo have the support and I believe the players. But there is something wrong somewhere else. And maybe for the good of everyone involved, some roles should step back and allow a better he or she to take the role. And that does not need to be a die hard Gaa person. This can be a good thing abd also a bad thing, as then things may never get changed. Someone who has
vision. Someone who has grit and can push through the negativity. Money is important, but money can also be managed different. Money doesnt bring out the best in people, been appreciated does.

Willie Joe says:

I’m not sure the poll means we’re assured of defeat, Kick the Ball, but I know what you’re driving at! In general, there’s been much more pessimism in the polls this year compared to previously but, no more than the odds in the bookies, the numbers haven’t always proven correct.

O

Ontheditch says:

May 29, 2025 at 4:57 pm

Presumably the GAA have a template of best practice re the structuring of a Co. Board and that will be put in place before the year is out.
There are a lot of good Mayo supporters with commitments that rule 7pm Saturday in Clones out for them. Couple that with a small stand.
On the field I wouldn't be holding my breath that we'll see much different from Mayo under Rochford.
We have a good bunch of players, they need experience against a well organised pack and they will get that on Sat eve. It should stand to them for the Donegal game.
Maybe, too, we could have the proper starting team and bench announced shortly. Is that a bridge too far.

May 29, 2025 at 9:43 pm

Hello everyone. I just want to assure everyone that I am hail and hearty and hope everyone on here is as well. I have been on the blog on a regular basis enjoying reading all the debates and opinions and team selections and following the Counties fortunes as much as ever.

I'm not sure where we'll be after the weekend, but one way or the other the quest for glory will always remain strong in Mayo. Regardless of how any game turns out or how any individuals performance might look, I have to believe that they always do their best and I couldn't ask for anything more.

Disappointment in losing has to be taken in much the same way as the thrill we get from winning. No player or manager wants to lose, but not every county can win either.

We will win the All Ireland some day. That's for sure. When we do, the rocky road we have taken to get there will make it all the sweeter. But we will win the All Ireland some day.

Untill we do we need to stay positive and proud. We have had some of the greatest players and teams to have ever pulled on a football jersey and we have a young crop chomping on the bit, who are ready to earn their spurs, so stay with them and support them and whenever that famous day does dawn, when we plant the Mayo flag on the summit, always be proud of the part you played and the support and confidence you gave along the way.

We will win the All Ireland some day. There is no doubt about that.

Great post Revelliino. If I were in Rochford's shoes, I'd make significant changes to the team for Saturday. Not only the team, but the style of play too. If it goes poorly, sure that's what everyone expected, BUT, if it goes well, then you're a management messiah.

W

Morahan and E O’Donaghue for Kevin Quinn and Conor Reid in the 26.

M

MayoMayo1 says:

With everything that has gone on there may have been a reaction during the week, or maybe the players are doing exactly as management want, but only one change to the team is hard to fathom. Of course I assume we will make the usual changes before throw in.
