Mayo Football Podcast Club Stars Teams of the Week

Mayo Football Podcast Club Stars Teams of the Week

The first round of action is over in this year’s Senior and Intermediate club Championships. Here at the Mayo Football Podcast, the new home of the Club Stars, we’ve been combing through all of the weekend’s matches to choose our first Teams of the Week. Here they are.

This week’s Club Stars Senior Team of the Week features players from ten different clubs. Yesterday’s eye-catching performance by Claremorris sees them claim three places on the team, while Ballaghaderreen, Aghamore and Charlestown all have two players selected. Six other clubs – Ballina Stephenites, Ballintubber, Breaffy, Castlebar Mitchels, Garrymore and Westport – have one player each. Tomás Morley of Ballaghaderreen is the Senior Manager of the Week.

Our Intermediate Team of the Week, meanwhile, features players from eleven different clubs. Moy Davitts lead the way with three, Ballinrobe and Davitts both have two and then it’s one each for Ardnaree, Burrishoole, Crossmolina, Hollymount/Carramore, Kilmaine, Kiltimagh, Louisburgh and Parke. The Intermediate Manager of the Week is Rory Clarke of Ardnaree.

So those are our picks from the first round of the Senior and Intermediate club Championships. Let us know in the comments what you think of the two selections.

The Mayo Football Podcast is the new home of the Club Stars and the 2024 awards will take place at the Knockranny Hotel, Westport, on Saturday 30th November. To find out more about the Club Stars and to get access to all our great audio and written content, join the club – details here.

What!? Really unfair on Evan Ivers not on the back 6. That’s insane. Paul Gilmore had a good game, clipped two scores but Ivers was the standout defender on the pitch in that match (I didnt see other games other than Breaffy v Kilmeena too so can’t comment on others). And AOS??? Seriously!? It was a 5 out of 10 performance at best? He’s capable of way more. That match was littered with errors and he had several along with loads others on the pitch.

Gobsmacked with some of the selections. Similar to leaving McHugh off the POTY shortlist (and I heard he kept Towey very quiet until he went off?)

Ronan Murray had a better inside forward performance than Aido Murray’s link play and positioning was at a different level. Hurley had a relatively quiet 2nd half but he kicked 3 fine scores in the first half. He too has a strong case for inclusion.

I have no idea what Adam Barrett needed to do to get on this team.
he was massive for Kilmaine,

Ah now, AOS was average at best last weekend, does he just get named on these things by default these days.

Also Towey wasn't a standout either in an impressive charlestown performance

Who is the Reihill lad that's shooting the lights out for borrishoole? What age is he? Was tearing it up in the league too

Hearing a lot of talk about Evan Ivers after Sunday's game.

My question is, was he outstanding or was he good and scored an outstanding goal?

This isn't a player who came out of nowhere. Ivers had a good year in 2021 for Belmullet on their way to the Senior Final. Peadar Gardiner was involved with Belmullet that year if I am remembering things right?

I would love nothing more than seeing a few fresh faces come out of this championship who could play for Mayo, but we probably need to temper expectations for a little while until we see players do well over the course of a championship.

On the fence I agree 100%.
I think we get way too carried away looking at players in individual games. I’ve heard more talk in the last 2 days about Evan Ivers than I have in the last 4 years. He got a fantastic goal and sounded like he had a good game but that doesn’t mean we need to start looking at him in county setups. In 2021 when Belmullet got to the county final he struggled big time against Knockmore lads his same age and didn’t impose himself on the game. I’m not saying he’s a bad footballer but to go from me extreme to another doesn’t make any sense to me at all. The exact same with young Darragh Beirne at Claremorris. It was the lads first senior championship game of his career, and yes he played very well but Can we please relax and let’s see him develop over the next year or two. He’s only 18/19 and whilst I believe he is a talent, we clearly don’t know yet if he will continue to dominate senior club games. The last thing that these young lads need is media attention, putting pressure on them, thinking they have made it and not putting in the hard work required to get the very best out of themselves. 2 years ago all the talk of the town was young Frank Irwin. He has been in a mayo panel 2 years not and has not made a breakthrough.

Bit of a nothing clickbait article following on from the Examiner piece yesterday in Mayo News, if you manage to scroll past the 100's of advertisements and spam articles it essentially boils down to one line from the board: “I have no comment to make. I don’t know where that came from. I’m totally surprised at it,” said Moynihan.

Do they just throw a dart at the program and see where it lands. Jarlath mullin is a class act but last Sunday Adam barrett with some outrageous scores and Brendan Sheridan with 5 or 6 pts from play outshone Jarlath. Don't think I'll be paying much attention to the team of the week after this.

@onthefence @green&red…just to clarify, I wasn’t (I can’t speak for anyone else) calling for him to be brought into a county panel. This thread is about Team of the a Week. Ivers had an excellent game. He was the best defender on show that day. He absolutely deserved to be on the team of the week. That’s the point. What he did in previous games/years is irrelevant. Whereas it’s wholly relevant if you’re making an overall evaluation of a player and their potential etc. I know little about him. But I watched the match at the weekend abd if can replicate his first half in particular, then he’s someone to consider. Absolutely. For him not to make the team of the week after that performance is really headscatching. I had him marked down before he scored that goal and actually texted another staunch Mayo supporter asking what he knew about Ivers. Then he rattled in that goal and that caused everyone to talk. Brief moments of brilliance like that look great, but one should look at a players overall performance. Are they nailing the basics and showing a higher level than others? On Sunday, Ivers definitely did that and that’s all that matters for the Team of the Week.

Green&Red says:

@mayonaze
Sorry I didn’t mean to sound like I was signalling you out at all. Not at all implying anything you said. I’ve just seen comments on other threads mentioning Ivers and Claremorris lads based off one game. And for me it’s not enough to put them me performance and bring him into the county set up in the same sentence. I agree he’s a solid tough player just like some of those claremorris lads but it’s true that we need to see a sustained level of performance before jumping to conclusions on county setups. Ironically no one talking about Kuba Callaghan last weekend and he’s the top scorer thus far. I guess when the game isn’t on Mayo Tv not many neutrals take any notice.

Probably need a shake up in the panel 5 or 6 new lads to keep everyone honest.
Of course this means dropping some guys.

O

OnTheFence says:

August 20, 2024 at 2:00 pm

@Mayonaze Similar to what @Green&Red said, I wasnt aiming that comment at you so much as at the overall talk about him after the game.

I agree about the Team Of The Week though. Some differing opinions between supporters and selectors clearly, but sure every has an opinion I guess!

C

Clare says:

August 20, 2024 at 2:03 pm

@JR we definetly do need that but who are they going to be though? Is there anyone good enough who's not in the panel that's inter county standard that you would drop any of the current starting team for?

G

Gizmobobs says:

August 20, 2024 at 2:18 pm

@Clare you could start by culling lads in panel 2-3 years who not featuring on match days that have not developed further or are not performing overly well at club level during this time. That alone should free up 3-4 slots based on last year or twos club action.
Bring in anyone else that looks like they may have potential/good club season or the raw ingredients (speed, power, aerial ability, aggression, good basic skillset) instead and see if they can develop under S&C and training with the main squad for a year or two.

J

Jr says:

August 20, 2024 at 2:21 pm

Some guys are on the panel for a few years with little or no game time.
Are they just not good enough?
Should we carry a reliable free taker?
Any man markers out there?
An unchanged panel gets stale and lazy.

M

Mayonaze says:

August 20, 2024 at 2:35 pm

@Green&Red and OntheFence, that’s sound and I’d agree with you both in terms of not making any rash or overhyped judgement on a player after one game. Indeed, even after a series of good performances you’re still not certain that a fella will make the breakthrough at IC level but they’re certainly worth a look. It’ll be interesting to see how the next few weeks go and who is putting their hand up. I think this year, more than the last few, there’s certainly a sense in the county and agreement held by most, that the squad needs a shake up. I think there’s a real opportunity this Autumn for fellas to showcase their potential. Equally, I think there are lads on the panel, some who have featured regularly who need to prove their worth in this club championship. I think most know the lads we are talking about!

I was also at the Claremorris Belmullet game also, would agree Ivers unlucky not to be included and he was standout for the first half, however could argue when the chips were down for the last 20 minutes when Belmullet went down to 14 men, they didn't close up shop and conceded 8 points to lose the game....defensively they have to look at themselves.... overall this selection is obviously very subjective and i don't see any reason not to include the players from that game selected, they all were outstanding had key roles to play on the day. Fallon made the save of the week to win it at the death, Gilmore who must have covered every inch of the pitch scored 2 from corner back and drove Claremorris forward and created numerous assists for Beirne and Hurley and Beirne was outstanding in second half in particular. Ivers and Murray were outstanding for Belmullet.

Cp says:

This team of the week selection looks like the people selecting just put in a few names to fill the gaps.ronan Murray and Niall Hurley for o Shea and towey for me.ivers and akram should also be in.i obviously wasn’t at all the senior games but I was at 3 and saw breaffy Kilmeena on mayo tv.

C

Cp says:

August 20, 2024 at 4:56 pm

And if a team loses does that mean can’t be on team of the week???

M

Mayonaze says:

August 20, 2024 at 5:20 pm

Ha..that’s it Cp… having watched both games, Belmullet were far better than Breaffy. The only thing Belmullet were below average on was being too open at the back, not enough cover back or protection in front of Beirne and Hurley in the opening 20 mins which they did improve on a little bit as the game developed (although after EOD went off they just lost their way a bit but still could have won it in the dying moment!). It’s not that Breaffy were awesome in their defence v Kilmeena. Kilmeena just kept giving the ball away. Their passing (hand and foot) was really poor and dare I say it, intermediate standard.

M

MayoMax says:

August 20, 2024 at 5:30 pm

Think it’s crazy to be talking about bringing lads in after round 1. These lads could end up being poor for the rest of championship. Not that they aren’t good players but let’s not get carried away here.

M

Mayonaze says:

August 20, 2024 at 5:46 pm

MayoMax…I’m laughing here; did anyone on this thread say that someone should be brought in?

Y

yew_tree says:

August 20, 2024 at 6:40 pm

Some people get carried away with a performance and more importantly the level they are playing at. I’ve seen lads who stood out playing club junior football. Then they go into the senior team and are totally out of their depth. Same goes for moving from senior club to senior inter county where the Juno is much greater.

Also people need to understand not everyone wants to play intercounty. It’s a major lifestyle change and not for everyone.

C

Cp says:

August 20, 2024 at 7:21 pm

I think to be looked at for county you need to be performing throughout the club champ.not just one round.i haven’t seen ivers play much since the 2021 season but he was excellent yesterday.we need to see it from him against ballagh and knockmore now though.

C

Clare says:

August 20, 2024 at 9:46 pm

@Gizmobobs good post fully agree.

@CP also agree with you to on that.

@yew_tree 100% the sacrafice for lifestyle change to intercounty from club is a massive difference and not everyone wants to take it on and fair enough if they don't want to.

W

Willie Joe says:

August 21, 2024 at 9:42 am

There isn't, Gaels Man. The logistics of getting informed feedback from the sixteen Senior and Intermediate games to compile the two Teams of the Week were complicated enough (seeing as the teams aren't picked by simply throwing darts at the programmes!) that it wasn't possible to do so for the Junior matches as well.

Willie Joe. Would a analysis of playing time of guys on panel, since Kevin came in, be done. Age and injuries need to be taken into account. But for example if you had a 26 year old in panel for last 3 years, not been injured and played very little in last couple of year, then has to be a case for trying someone new in panel. But also aware maybe alternatives not good enough either. But dont want to start a witch hunt either, as everyone in panel I sure giving there all, and deserve our support

T

Tubberman says:

You would expect any good mgmt team would review the squad each year, and be ruthless where necessary.
Doing a similar exercise on an online forum would be very unfair to the players, who as you said Mayotillidie, give so much of their own time and effort to trying to get on the pitch in a Mayo jersey.

Great pod with Nigel Reape, his knowledge of football throughout the County is top class, great to hear about some of the smaller Junior clubs putting in great work the likes of Eastern Gaels and Northern Gaels.Keep up the good work Mike and Rob, we need to promote all Club football grades not just Senior and make people on the street and pubs talking about there local clubs.

@CP Joe canny was brought in as forwards coach but no harm in shaking things up again it needs to be done. Don't know if it will be Andy moran I'll wait for confirmation despite the rumours online and articleds one from the Sunday World to though you can't trust the Sunday World though haha.

Picked up a copy of the Western in my local (Dublin) Spar. Fantastic coverage of the first round of the county championships. What struck me was the amount of big scorers across a lot of games: Beirne and Hurley for Claremorris, Callaghan for Ballagh, Towey for Charlestown, Fionnan Duffy Crossmolina, and a swathe of Ballina players; I may well have left out others. This is genuinely exciting, but, as posters have warned, let's see it happen consistently over the championship.

Likely be no major changes to the backroom team given no work 2 days after review. But sure the review box be ticked anyway :)
