After a Sunday full of action in the Mayo Club Championships Rob and Mike were back on the road to bring you the day’s round-up and some of the voices behind the stories.
In this episode of ‘In Their Own Words’ we hear Aidan Kilcoyne’s synopsis on Knockmore’s win over Ballintubber along with some post-match reaction from Darren McHale.
Rob also caught the reaction of Austin O’Malley who watched Crossmolina’s win over Belmullet. Niall Coggins stopped to speak with Rob after the full-time whistle.
Plus, Moy Davitts’ Anthony Jordon joined Rob for chat following his side’s narrow win over Ballinrobe.
To finish off the pod, Mike watched the battle between Kiltane and Cill Chomáin and caught the thoughts of Justin Healy of Cill Chomáin and Kiltane’s Tommy Conroy after the game.

Some crowd at games.
Was at 4 games the weekend & the crowds at games unbelievable.
Even the intermediate Qtr final moy davitts ballinrobe jammed.
Fair play to the clubs everything with off like clock work and they dont get a penny off the county board for it.
The county board could easily have taken 8 qtr fianls total attendance10,000*15 euros plus money from tg4 175k and clubs get not 1 penny.

Playing an intermediate semi final in a pitch without a stand in October. County board priorities solely with the financial aspect, no respect to teams or supporters

Is it hard to get excited about the club champo at the moment guys and gals? Like apart from watching young brilliant baller like Kobe , it just seems very average..not trying to be pessimistic but anyone else finding it hard to have full interest?

3 of the Senior championship games this weekend very poor, although Crossmolina excellent to watch. Kilcommon v Kiltane a good watch for the first half, Kiltane pulled away in the 2nd half. 2 best performances of the weekend from games I watched were Adam Barrett and Liam O'Donoghue in midfield for Kiltane yesterday, he was everywhere, definitely worth a look for Andy. Hugh O Loughlin clearly hadn't shaken off his injury on Saturday but would be bringing him into Senior set up for a look as he has the physical attributes. From last years panel, Morahan/Loftus have really impressed.
I think Andy is going to have to be ruthless with a few of the older heads in his new squad, some have been very disappointing in championship. Overall so far, been a few newbies that I expect Andy to have a look at:
Fitzpatrick and Beirne (Claremorris)
L O'Donoghue (Kiltane)
L Og Horkan (Garrymore)
Kobe/D Flynn/O Deane (Crossmolina)
Hughes (Neale)
A Barrett/N Burke (Kilmaine)
D Dolan (Balla)
K Callaghan (Ballagh)
J Livingstone (Breaffy) and L Jennings (Ballinrobe)
J MacMonagle (Castlebar)
L Lavin (Aghamore, v impressive in first group game, didn't tog for other two games)
J Irwin (Ballina)
N Moran (Hollymount/Carramore)

Clubs do get a share of the gates. Per the 2023 CB accounts that are available on the website, €162k was paid out to clubs in 2022 and 153k in 2023. Clubs get paid to host games. If the county board priorities were solely financial, they would have put all games in to Castlebar and get rid of the season passes which are great value for people who go to games.

At a game yesterday where the linesman over ruled 2 umpires to cancel a score. Didn't know this was possible, never seen it before.

In agreement with Winston above this year championship was poor quality with the exception of Crossmolina and Westport and Castlebar last match. Not sure if I will sign up next year! Hopefully Andy will have enough picks to improve the squad. The young players ( minors like Kobe, Sean og etc) from the brilliant Crossmolina team should be handled with care and play for the u20 for strength/ development purposes.

Whats peoples opinions on the semi finals especially senior not been played in mchale park? Like if the weather is bad we have a massive stand for the spectators to go into and its the best pitch find it odd.

My view is it's all too strung out. Just have one two week break. Play the games week on week.
Seems ages since the ftrst group game.

Must be the only county in the country that is so precious about the county grounds. Even from a revenue point a view most countys are shoehorning game's in their county grounds at every opportunity. .Possibly will end up with better atmosphere out of McHale pk but would imagine players are disappointed not to get into the place.

@ The New Departure, haven't watched them in championship yet so can't include. Wasn't overly impressed by Cian McHale in Sigerson this year I have to say but accept that he's still young. Reape has always been deadly but age probably going against him for panel inclusion at this stage, haven't seen Clarke in a couple of years.
